BF3 – Soldiers “Appear on the Map for a Short Time” When Firing an Unsuppressed Weapon

Earlier today, it was reported that you do not show up on the mini-map when firing an unsuppressed weapon in the Battlefield 3 multiplayer.

However, Ian Torny recently stated, “To clarify – You will appear on the map for a short time, but you will not be flagged/spotted,” referencing Fredrick Thylander’s statement, “It makes you light up on minimap for a split second. Add silencer to avoid it.”

This confirms a rumour that we reported on last night which you can check out here. While this mini-map feature has been included in previous Battlefield games, it was missing from the Beta build of Battlefield 3. This led many fans to believe that it may not be making it into the final version. This of course makes sense to have been added and gives more weight to decisions made when choosing weapon attachments. For example, do you want to attach a heavy barrel for more raw power, but show up on the mini map when firing, or sacrifice range for staying invisible on the mini map by adding a suppressor.

Unlike Battlefield: Bad Company 2, where suppressors were only available to the Engineer kit, Battlefield 3 allows you to attach suppressors to most weapon in the game, across the four different classes. This gives allows for a different style of play and more versatility among all classes.

    DICE has to stop copying features from CoD. I’m sick of them trying to please so much the CoD players, they’re turning Battlefield to much similar to CoD.

      There just making it more realistic. In a real situation You can attatch a suppresser to almost any gun you like. If you want to complain about them making it call of duty like complain about the prestige system they might be implementing.

      As it was stated in the article… this feature has been present in many Battlefield games.  As well as many other games in general.  COD didn’t do everything first you know.  They’re both military FPS games, there are going to be elements that cross over.  In this case, a very insignificant element in the grand scheme of things.

        then what happend with the moment to search if your teammate is shooting or an enemy? but if its only for a really short time, were most players dont see it, then it isn’t as bad, but then the teammates must also appear as a red dot.

    One of my favorite attachments for the metro beta had to be the infrared light sight.  Due to the lighting in the tunnels, it was great for spotting out enemies to my teammates.

    First off,  I think the whole miscommunication to the community is really unprofessional. Second, I think this is a great idea, like I said in a comment on the other article, it makes you put more thought into the shots you take. Are you sure enough that you will get that kill, that you want to risk revealing your position?

    Also, I didn’t have one single attachment that I liked the most. I often changed the attachments depending on the situation and random whim. During the first phase of Metro, I would run a M4A1 with a flash suppressor, next two phases I would either slap on a tac-light or a suppressor, and for the last phase I would go for a heavy barrel and ACOG. So, it all depends!

      Why should i be punished for flanking a few enemies? they should self be aware if someone is behind them or to the left or something. It is just the road to easyness, the player should listen and not being help with an radar, that is knowing your exact location.

        You really aren’t being punished. Whether you’re using a suppressed weapon or not, the enemy will eventually figure out you’re behind them. Part of flanking is getting behind the enemy unseen, and staying there as long as possible. It’s stealthy, if you want to maximize your flanking ability, use a suppressor. This is giving you another reason to make you think; do you use a weapon that doesn’t function well with a suppressor to flank enemies? Then you’re punishing yourself. If you want to keep using a weapon that doesn’t function well with a certain playstyle, then that’s entirely your call.

    Well I don’t like the idea of having a mini map, they could of put a hardcore mode with no mini map just like in BF2, BF2 u had the chance 2 choose easy mode with a mini map and hardcore with no mini map. they trying to make a realistic shooter  so why put a mini map when if you out there on the battlefield you are not going to have a map telling you where the enemy is. I THINK THEY NEED TO CHANGE THIS MINI MAP CRAP. I loved bf2 just because it didnt have no mini map and Im real REAL SAD i traded it
