Star Citizen Fundraiser Ends in Great Success, Earns Over $6 Million

Fundraising for Robters Space Industries’ Star Citizen has come to a close, but not without a most triumphant ending.

Becoming the most successful crowd-funded video game project to date, Star Citizen, it’s creator Chris Roberts, and the rest of the team have raised over $6 million to invest towards this epic space MMO flight simulator project. That’s three times their original goal of $2 million. Apparently, gamers want an epic space sim!

“Star Citizen will be released because of your dedication and your willingness to put your money where our mouths are. Our gratitude is immeasurable; we owe you our livelihoods and will not soon forget it,” Roberts writes in a recent update.

Upon reaching it’s final stretch goal of $6 million, Roberts has promised the following features at launch:

  • Star Citizen will improve upon Privateer, with 100 star systems to explore on launch.
  • Bengal carrier unlocked for persistent universe play.
  • Full orchestral music for Star Citizen/Squadron 42 sound track.
  • The first Squadron 42 mission disk, Behind Enemy Lines, available for free to all backers upon release.
  • A 16-mission campaign in the style of The Secret Missions.

As for what’s next, Robert’s writes, “updates and features will continue, returning to a regular schedule in the next few days. The team needs a few days to collect ourselves and reform before jumping into the immense task ahead (after the last month, our husbands, wives, children and yes, pets, miss us!) We will also be launching new sections which have been in the works for some time: the Galactapedia will tell you more about the Star Citizen world, Engineering will introduce you to game mechanics that are being planned and Holovids will offer you video footage from the game as it takes shape.”

Expect Star Citizen on the PC in late 2014.

Glad to see they made it and even succeeded expectations! It’s my second game I have ever pledged for.
I was immediately sold when they said they would make a PC only game that will make our PC’s sweat because of the use of CryEngine 3.
I mean, apart from Crysis 1, Crysis 2 (with DX11 and high res patch) and Battlefield 3, there aren’t a lot of boundary-pushing games in regards to visual technology. (as far as I can remember). The majority just get ported from PS3/360 to PC with minimal improvements…

And the videos also look awesome of course. They already spent quite some time in CryEngine 3. :D

$6 Million for a game, while millions still go hungry everyday.
