Xbox Live To Adopt Communications Over Skype

Not only Xbox Live, but a whole suite of online-capable communication devices by Microsoft.

According to CVG, Microsoft will be “consolidating all their communications technology” around the Skype platform. This means the next generation Xbox as well as PCs and Tablets. It also means possibility that “we’ll see asynchronous voice and video messages in next-gen Xbox Live.”

CVG also noted that a recent job advertisement revealed that Microsoft was in search of a user interface designer for the “next-gen Xbox” and that the job was, allegedly, located at Microsoft’s UK-based Skype offices. The ad reads, “The team you’ll join is responsible for Skype in the living room (broadly the home), across various devices but with a focus on the large screen and the next generation of Xbox.”

Microsoft’s acquisition of Skype in 2011 was one one of the largest purchases the company has ever made in it’s 40-year history, costing them a total of $8.5 billion.

It was also announced back in November that Microsoft would dissolve one of the oldest and most popular messenger services, MSN, and replace it with Skype. Many of you using Microsoft’s Outlook email service may have recently received an an email similar to this one:

What are your thoughts? Would you prefer to use Skype as your form of in-game communication? Are you already using it anyways?

Thanks, CVG.

I personally love skype. But I’ll be honest, I get worried when large companies, EA, Microsoft, etc. buy successful competitors like skype. Even on a smaller scale, twitter buying tweetdeck. They either go far off the original idea, ruin it, or stop working with it.

At least microsoft isn’t dissolving skype. So I look forward to it being all in one. Just hope they do it right!

I am so excited for this being able to talk to people on pc via chat and maybe an end to this whole strict nat cannot connect BS

    • Dat Nat

Fixing NAT is easy… Skype will be bad. Ventrillo or team speak as someone said above

  • Here we go again!

Wow another thing that a computer already does. bet the next Xbox will have paint and Microsoft word. I want a gaming console not a computer.

  • Here we go again!

Also I wish they would make a update to disable ads and also to delete certain games off my achievement list. I know thats anal but having a lot of games with one achievement on the list drives me crazy for some reason.

  • BOSS jediZOHAN

Considering how insecure Skype is, this is a terrible idea.

  • SandboxDenmark

Skype is unsafe, has virus similarities and ads. No deal.

Ideally, Microsoft should have acquired Ventrilo or TeamSpeak.

    • Clayton Johnson

Yeah but the casuals don’t know about Vent and TeamSpeak, and we all know how the industry just LOVES to pander to casual gamers

And Sony is still sitting in their office drinking bleach.

I’m really sick of PS3 being so far behind Xbox, I might switch.

LOL I doubt you even own a PS3 and are just trolling!!

Add fucking Bgriffy on Psn and you’ll find I do in fact have a Ps3

If you had a PS3 then you would know it isn’t behind at all!! If anything PSN it getting more content then XBL with there Day 1 which is awesome. I own both consoles and the only thing that Xbox has that PS3 doesn’t is cross game chat which I never really use. I love both console but PS3 provides better exclusives for me

    • Clayton Johnson

Yeah I’m pretty sure pS3 has always had access to Skype, considering it can’t do cross game chat

I didn’t buy a gaming console to skype on!! I bought it to play video games and I think that is where MICROSOFT is failing. I haven’t used my XBOX for a couple of months since none of xbox’s exclusives appeal to me in any way

  • dpg70

I don’t even use messenger on the xbox. I have no idea how or why one would use it on the console. Can anyone clue me in here?
