Medal of Honor Franchise Still Part of EA’s ‘Key Considerations for Fiscal Year 2013 Plan’

Last January, EA reported that 2012′s Medal of Honor sequel, Warfighter, was an “obvious miss” and would be taken out of the yearly rotation of shooters. According to chief operating officer Peter Moore, “the game was solid but the focus on combat authenticity did not resonate with consumers.”

Later, chief creative director Rich Hilleman commented on the possibility of it’s return, but only once EA could “get the right leadership aligned.”

According to recent EA Q4 FY ’13 reports, Medal of Honor is indeed still in EA’s “key considerations.”

Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director, John Riccitello listed the franchise as a part of EA’s top three strategies: brands, platform, and talent.

He said, “by brands, we mean that we have the strongest brand portfolio in the game industry. We will project that portfolio across all relevant digital business models and channels while continuing to invest to grow the power of our brands. Leading the way for EA are blockbusters like Battlefield, Need for Speed, FIFA, Plants vs. Zombies, Bejeweled, Star Wars, Madden, The Sims, Dragon Age, SimCity, Mass Effect and Medal of Honor. We strongly believe this brand collection is unmatched by any competitor in our industry.”

Further on in the earnings call, he asked to turn to EA’s FY ’13 guidance: “The key considerations for our FY ’13 plan, as it came together these past months, are these: at the foundation is another year of blockbuster brands, Madden NFL, FIFA, SimCity, Medal of Honor, Dead Space and Need for Speed, as well as mobile hits like The Simpsons, Tapped Out and Bejeweled.”

Medal of Honor: Warfighter, a sequel to the 2010 Medal of Honor reboot and developed by Danger Close studios, was received poorly by critics and gamers alike, resulting in poor sales. As of yet, no mention has been made of another Medal of Honor title for the foreseeable future.

    Just give it to another studio, 3rd time lucky perhaps? Allied Assault was great in the day, I remember running up from the boats up Omaha beach, it looked great for its time.

    Uhm, no? It’s the fact that it was glitchy, boring, unbalanced, and rushed that did not resonate with the consumers.

          sequels get all the players no matter how bad or broken they are *see BF3 and any other cod title*

            Yeah it’s sad really, I can barely find a game now on MoH..

            BF3 turned out pretty balanced. Obviously they couldn’t change the Medic class mid-game (maybe they could, I don’t know; but it would have been a drastic change). I don’t know of a single gun that wasn’t changed in some way or another from launch to the End Game DLC. Turned out pretty nicely if you ask me, and a good learning platform for BF4. It’s not like BF3 was a carbon copy of BC2 or BF2 by any means.

            As far as CoD goes, I’m still curious about this new engine. MW3 and BO:II were flops, but Black Ops was pretty dang good as far as game mechanics go. A few bad perks and such but a good game nonetheless.

              Only bad game in my opinion in the CoD series was mw3, totally copy and paste from mw2 with minor tweaks! Black ops 2 has got a SLIGHTY better multi then mw3 but I mainly got it for the zombie mode all others are actually not bad mw2 had a new engine black ops and w@w had the zombies and fun multi which is what it’s all about. And CoD 4 well that game was awesome but can’t say anything good about mw3.

          MOH2010 is that what are you referring to that game, is because is very repetitive and is the same thing again and again

        Uh… I don’t get all the hate (read: downvotes). I didn’t say I wanted the next MoH to be CoD or that I hated CoD or hated MoH.

        The fact that Peter Moore came out and said “the game was solid but the focus on combat authenticity did not resonate with consumers” says to me that he thinks they need to move away from “authenticity” (Not that I thought MoH: Warfighter was wholly authentic) and move more towards fast paced, over the top arcade style action a la EA’s biggest FPS competition: CoD.

        I pretty much agree with Peter Moore-on’s assessment as to why MoH: Warfighter did not resonate with consumers.

      Problems caused by rushed release was the reason why people didnt enjoy it. Otherwise it was a solid game.

    I bet they’re planning for a mobile game or HD remakes of their old games or something.

    That said, I wish Danger Clase would get a third try. MOH2010 had one of the best campaigns for its genre this generation, and Warfighter had a great, underappreciated, MP.

        When I think of Old MOH Developers, I think of West and Zampella (who did Allied Assault)…

        … and EA does have them back. Or one of them at least.

          I thought about this too. It’s kind of… odd… that Respawn is now working on a new title, while someone else is working on their baby, MoH, under the same publisher.

    Give it to a developer who knows how to program the Frostbite engine correctly and not butcher it like Danger Close did.

          Warfighter completely missed their target on the single player campaign, but I think that their multiplayer offered one of the most unique gameplay experiences available in the “military authentic” FPS genre.

          Of course you had to look for it. In screenshots and videos it appeared to be nothing more than a hard cash in on M4s, attachments, and fan favorite lingo like OSCAR MIKE and ROGER THAT TEN FOUR ZERO BRAVO NINER TANGO. But the class system has much more depth than a cursory glance can offer. And the Fireteam Buddy system made it an absolute thrill to play even with only one other friend.

          When I think back over the past year of video gaming – between four of the five Battlefield 3 expansion packs, half a year of MW3, and several months of Black Ops 2 – my favorite MP moments were me and a buddy tearing through “servers” and single handedly winning match after match after match. That’s a feeling that none of the vehicles in BF3 and none of the perks or killstreaks in Call of Duty could give.

      Respawn’s game was long rumored to be aimed at taking bites out of market share from Halo and Gears of War. EA already has Medal of Honor and Battlefield to nibble away at Call of Duty. I suppose with Activision gobbling up Bungie and having them fire up a persistent sci-fi shooter, EA had not choice.

      The newest rumors seem to reinforce that, with the mention of a sci-fi setting where giant bipedal robots are serving up chaos in a persistent war.

    MOH Warfighter might have been better game with a few more months of polish but since EA is focused on competing with Call of Duty it was rushed out too early.

      I think that if Warfighter had come out in March after Black Ops 2 thoroughly disappointed, well, everybody, that it could have done much much better than it did.

      Warfighter coming out when it did was basically left to die in the turbulence of Assassins Creed, Call of Duty, and Halo. And I would curious to know if maybe Dishonored did better than EA would have expected and took sales away from Warfighter. Honestly, EA treating like Warfighter like a big Q4 contender screams like them losing faith and cutting weight.

      I can’t imagine how well a game like Warfighter might have done in Q1 or Q2. They’re always such slow months for games. And with so many 2013 games underperforming in MP, I’d be curious if Warfighter could have succeeded … but then again, it might have cannibalized Crysis 3′s market share.

        It’s funny that you mention Crysis 3 being the post-November rush game. Look at how much the YouTube Call of Duty community ate that game up. All in all, it’s not even THAT comparable to CoD, yet it did quite well as far as popularity went. I’d go on a limb and say that MoH;WF would have done just as well as, if not better than Crysis 3 had it came out Q1 2013. Reason being? Just like you said: disappointed CoD players looking for a break. If CoD players had to choose between a Sci-Fi FPS shooter and a Modern Warfare-style FPS shooter, MoH would’ve probably even have had an upper hand.

        Interesting thoughts.

    The next MOH should get extra development time compared to Warfighter’s… and come out at a month that isn’t November. I still thought the game was good for what it was, but the release date really screwed over the player base during that time.

    There is a simply reason that any FPS MP games come into the market, it will be destroyed immediately by fans, non fans, communities, media and …

    Call of duty & Battlefield monopolise the FPS genre (As they truly can and deserve)

    So if a FPS comes like Bioshock or Dishonoured … and do something different it will have a chance to get positive reaction BUT if any FPS ever attempt to challenge COD or BF it will be destroyed by it’s own hype and majority of people that compare it with COD and BF.

      Medal of Honor had a monopoly on the market until Call of Duty came out.

      Quake had a monopoly on the market until Unreal Tournament came out.

      If a killer product comes out, it can succeed. And if a mistake is made, a ship – no matter how large – can still sink.

    I don’t want another modern medal of honor i want them to do something different like vietnam or something ww1 would be my first choice but i don’t know how many people other then me would like that.

    MOH warfighter just need a patch that fix old the bugs and glitch, and it will probably be more successful and we will could possible could received more support

    Some of You guys are full of bull… you guys dont know crap about our military. Aint served a lick of day. Medal of honor warfighter is awesome!! In fact its so awesome that i bought 2 copies of the game and plan to get all editions. This game is very personal to me for the time that ive served and still serving today in our military USMC “Shoulder to Shoulder”. “To our fallen angels rest in peace”

    Danger Close didn’t butcher the frostbite 2 engine, the frostbite 2 engine is an overrated buggy sack of crap.

    EA should have let DC make the game they wanted too instead of interfering.
