No Multiplayer Mode in Wolfenstein: The New Order

Bethesda and MachineGames recently announced that Wolfenstein: The New Order will not have multiplayer component.

The game’s creative director, Jens Matthies, told GameSpot that the new Wolfenstein will consist of only a single player campaign, and will not include mutliplayer.

“It’s such a huge part of video game legacy. If there’s a video game museum, Wolfenstein is in the first room. It’s the start of the wave that shaped the world of gaming.”

“On a personal level, I played this when I was younger and it was mind-blowing,” Matthies added. “I never then of course dreamed that I was going to be working with it. It’s both an honor and a legacy.”

This, of course, means that unless a co-op mode is announced or multiplayer is back on the table, the title’s coverage on MP1st will be limited.

Thanks, Aaron Kenny

Such a shame look at RTCW and Wolf:ET Wolfenstein is nothing without multiplayer look at the last one

I’m on the fence with this one, if the new order can legitimately carry the spirit of the original Wolfenstein I’d be okay with the lack of multiplayer, but multiplayer gaming is such a huge component of my down time these days. Its a huge consideration when weighing up the value of a title before I go ahead and make a purchase.

      lolwut?!?!?

RTCW (return to castle wolfenstein) multiplayer was awesome.

        • Actor

He’s probably never played it before… Came out more than 2 years ago

“Wolfenstein” was pretty terrible dude. The single player was pitiful as well as the MP. So lolwut?!?!?

  • BOSS jediZOHAN

Not every game needs a multiplayer. Most are tacked on and cost the developers time, money, and effort that could have been spent refining the singleplayer experience. Frankly, I’m glad this won’t have MP, there’d be no point to it. Don’t do it unless you’re bringing something new to the table.

yes but alot of game should have CO-OP in my opinion. sadly since there is no MP there is no CO-OP :C *unless splitscreen*

    • betosobreira

Oh yeah, you play the entire campaign, missions, you get all trophies and put the game on the shelf. It will be useless.

      • DanDustEmOff

If its done like fallout in a huge open world then this game doesn’t need one if it’s like a BF or Cod clone it will die fast and hard.

      • BOSS jediZOHAN

LOL, god forbid you shouldn’t be able to play a game until you’ve played it so much you never want to play it again.

        • betosobreira

I meant that with a multiplayer in a game, it will have more options to play. You have the campaign and the multiplayer. 2 options. I’m not a trophy hunter, it was just an example.

        • http://www.facebook.com/awkenney Aaron Kenney

          Good point.

    • Indloon

Do you even know what Wolfenstein is?
Seems not, but you should know that RTCW and Wolf:ET multiplayers were and are still the most dynamic and the best on-line FPS shooters out there.
Playing Wolf:ET for 8 years now, I can say that it nails every other modern shooter!

      • BOSS jediZOHAN

I was playing Wolfenstein since before you were born. My point was that EVERY FPS game these days has some half-assed multiplayer that tries to compete with COD. It’s not needed, therefore, don’t do it.

Maybe if they did something unique it would be cool. But I’d rather have an amazing singleplayer game, then an okay singleplayer and tacked-on multiplayer.

        • Indloon

Oh please, you don’t know my age, so don’t even try…

If Bethesda is so clear on what they want to do with the Wolf IP, why not do something with the MP which was one of the strong points of RTCW? The publisher is testing the waters without committing too much money.

And no multiplayer is disappointing but hardly the end of the world, especially if it was going to be half-arsed anyway.

          Anyways, we will see …

          • BOSS jediZOHAN

Because they’re doing a total overhaul of the franchise.

            • http://www.facebook.com/awkenney Aaron Kenney

That’s the problem. A follow-up to RTCW wouldn’t have been a bad idea, but they rebooted it into something worse. Honestly if the devs are going to take the time to create the game, then meet the bar.

I visit MP1st largely just to watch Alex dig his own editorial grave. One shovel of dross at a time

          • http://www.facebook.com/awkenney Aaron Kenney

I thought that at first as well, then magically he started saying all of the things that I commented about COD. Go figure.

        • http://www.facebook.com/awkenney Aaron Kenney

I’d rather devs get back to amazing MP that isn’t based on COD. It’s possible, and Wolf:ET proved it.

      • gameragodzilla

Do YOU even know what Wolfenstein is?
Seems not. Wolfenstein 3D and Spear of Destiny did not have multiplayer components. They were the first example of a modern SINGLE PLAYER FPS game. Just because ONE game in the series had good multiplayer doesn’t mean that the entire series is about multiplayer or that multiplayer is somehow core to his identity. It’s not. The Dieselpunk WW2 gameplay and story are core to Wolfenstein’s identity. It always has been, and always will be.

    • http://www.facebook.com/awkenney Aaron Kenney

I would argue that MP doesn’t need much more brought to the table than a greater sense of competition, however the dev can do that. Id franchises especially, and in following Wolf:ET, need to have solid MP because that’s what id fans freak out over.

  • Hebert

I will trade shit multiplayer any day if the single player is amazing.

    • Newwolfenstiengoingtobomb

Be ready to get a shit game because of no multilayer. Last game didn’t have it and it bombed.

      • http://www.facebook.com/awkenney Aaron Kenney

Oh it had it. It was terrible.

    • http://www.facebook.com/awkenney Aaron Kenney

This is a game based on an id franchise and fans have been waiting for updated MP since Quake 3 Arena/Quake Live and ET:QW. Honestly, this is nothing more than spit to the face of the fans. I still to this day am saddened that Brink mostly flopped, because I rather enjoyed it due to the directness of its MP mechanics.

      • john doe

I do see your point but developers are only caring about money right now. Wasting money and developing time for a mode just hardcore fans would play they will not do. We live in a bf/cod/halo era now and any shooter multiplayer is judged on how well it stacks up to those. Chances are if your game is not one of those three you better bring your a game to your multiplayer because it is hard to compete with them developers. Sure bf/cod has its share of problems but there is no denying that they are the most popular shooters on the market.

  • MegaMan3k

I think Bethesda is making a huge mistake here. Wolfenstein used to be one of the kings of multiplayer, and it lost its way in the 2009 title with a terrible outsourced MP. Return to Castle Wolfenstein and Enemy Territory, I think, are so fondly remembered in the gaming consciousness that this news comes across with nearly the same impact as “Battlefield 5 to be single player only.”

Not to mention, Bethesda doesn’t have a great track record with games right now. Let’s see, ignoring their cookie cutter TES and Fallout, in the past few years they put out WET, RAGE, Rogue Warrior, Brink, and Hunted: The Demon Forge. Jeez.

    • BOSS jediZOHAN

WET, RAGE, Rogue Warrior, Brink, and Hunted: The Demon Forge.

None of which were actually developed by Bethesda.

      • MegaMan3k

New World Order is not developed by Bethesda.

    • http://www.facebook.com/awkenney Aaron Kenney

You’re forgetting Dishonored, which actually has done quite well with critics and players alike, and the sales aren’t bad either. However, I do see your point.

    • gameragodzilla

Considering Wolfenstein 3D and Spear of Destiny didn’t have multiplayer, saying that, because ONE game in the series had great multiplayer (Enemy Territory was originally an expansion pack before the single player portion was removed and the game was released for free, so it’s technically the same game as RTCW), the entire series is about multiplayer is just stupid.

As you said, Wolf 2009 outsourced its MP and half assed it, because the single player portion was the main focus of the title. Wolfenstein will always be mainly about single player, and people like you are ruining the Wolfenstein IP because of your nostalgia for the odd one out in the series.

  • Jamic

    A great shame.

Probably wont pick the game at all or if I do, it will be bargain price from steam.

If a game doesnt have multiplayer, then there must be other redeeming factors that create more replayability. Even a campaing that lasts 10 hours is not enough for 60€

  • BOSS jediZOHAN

OMG, I won’t be able to call 12 year olds faggots over the internet and I’ll actually have to pay attention to a storyline? GTFO!

  • Nomoney

Rtcw was one of the best mp experience I have every had. I still remember the beach and storming it. I wish they would add mp cause they would have a preorder from me. Guess they don’t like money!

  • Jon

Thats bs :( RTCW/ Enemy Territory was amazing!! I loved battery and oasis. With goldrush.

    The mods were epic!!!!

  • Lunkan

IF the would add mulitplayer then Machinegames cant be the makers of the MP, maybe Splash Damage would but I havent seen anything from then in years.

I would just love a fantastic remake of the old one, I want old mechanics, not all this new ” customization” crap, keep it old-school, it will sell
