Report – Microsoft to Replace Xbox Points with Real Currency System

Microsoft is reportedly doing away with the Microsoft Points system in favor of real currency for downloadable items on Xbox Live later this year.

According to a report by The Verge, Microsoft will switch to the currency system in time for the next Xbox console. The currency system, through credit, debit, and gift cards, will be compatible across Microsoft’s Windows Store, Windows Phone Store, and Xbox.

Microsoft should announce the switch to the currency based system at E3 this year.

PS4 for ever after .. PS4 will win this war easily

    • but

You’ve barely even seen the competition yet.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100002367454310 Jonathan Stoffregen

that’s true if the horrible rumors turn out to be just rumors then the next xbox will be fine but if not…

        • dpg70

          It will be fine.

          • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100002367454310 Jonathan Stoffregen

            ok god

        • MegaMan3k

You mean the always on? So that the most informed people in the least populated areas of the country will consider not buying it?

          Devastating to the bottom line.

I don’t imagine anybody caring but pirates and internet crybabies. And I’d like to think that neither is at the top of Microsoft’s voice of customer.

          • DanDustEmOff

            MS have already stated
that there will not be an always online requirement.

            • gamestop 101

Not true at all they did say that but if that only for single player games not mp there will be a constant internet required

            • DanDustEmOff

Of course you require an internet connection to play online mp, the rumour was that it requires an always on internet connection. That is what people are referring to on this article. You’re either trolling or so misinformed that you’re making game stop empoyees look bad.

        • Microsoft rep

Ok I do support the all on connection if its true plus it will stop the hackers and modders yea for years I’ve been telling them fix stuff and they are they do listen to grownups I just want gaming to be fun again with out all modders on and hackers with jtags if this mean if u try to mod your system u will be ip banned most likely if my Microsoft rep is right about this. If u play online then u shouldn’t worry about 24/7 connection your still online lol

          • Niosus

Please don’t use “modding” as a bad thing. Call them hackers, but we have to keep the word modding clear. Mods have only done good in history and created some of the biggest franchises. Those are completely different from the modders you are talking about. The PC modders are good guys trying to make a better game without forcing their changes to anyone else…

I don’t think always on will stop cheaters and hackers. When you’re playing online now, you’re ALSO playing online 100% of the time. I’m sure they will have learned from their mistakes, but just making it always on will not magically solve all the issues. Hackers will be able to circumvent that as well, but it may take a little while.

      • NeT-ShatterZ

Want to hear a joke? Microsoft and free in the same sentence haha

        • DanDustEmOff

I got another one Sony and Profit in the same sentence ha ha ha.

    • B_Boss

Well….we have yet to see Sony offer something as simple as allowing to “gift” points to others. Kudos to MS for this awesome move. Today has been a good gamer’s day. EA with the obliteration of the online pass key and now this ;).

    • john doe

Ps4 will be a paid subscription copying what Microsoft doing my sony rep already told us employees at gamestop

      • DanDustEmOff

I believe that they will too.

    • anonymous employee

As well ps4 will not win the war when activision still has a close connection with Microsoft meaning once again all dlc will come first for the new xbox as well the new ea studio respond has exclusive games only for the new xbox what u just have naughty dog studio that’s a joke and who gives two shits about the vita yse come on think about it kid sony will be going down further in the shit hole when they are trying to combined the vita with the ps4

      • Clayton Johnson

I don’t normally stand in for Grammar Nazis
But when I do, I say “Use a fucking period for period’s sake!”

        • anonymous employee

Since I’m a store manager at gamestop a lot, I use my smartphone to type. I’m never at home near my computer. So yea it is tough to ttype on the phone. If u had a job and get out of your house you will understand.

          • Niosus

Pro tip: press space twice to insert a period, space and capitalize the next letter.

Please don’t attack other people personally, I’ll let this one slide but next time I will have to remove your comment.

            • DanDustEmOff

Why are you threatening to remove his comment deffending himself. Clayton attacked him first and used bad language, its him you should be threatening.

            • http://www.facebook.com/thomas.huggins.7 Thomas Huggins

It’s only illegal to personally attack a mod on here. Anybody else and it goes unnoticed (unless they’re defending a mod).

            • DanDustEmOff

              I just don’t get
why he is defending Clayton when its clearly him that started being abusive the guy was just standing up for himself.

            • Niosus

I am not defending anyone, I don’t want ANY personal stabs at all. If Clayton attacked him personally I would’ve deleted his comment or warned him as well. That’s all there is to it. I don’t pick sides when moderating.

            • DanDustEmOff

Dude if someone spoke to me like that irl they would get a punch there was no need for Claytons comment, the whole comment was
a personal attack on this guy and for what? Bad grammar im not saying anom shouldn’t get told and I appreciate the comments that are offensive being removed but Claytons comment was
worse and should have been told too.

            • ggamestop 101

Wow the mods in here are lamer then dating chat sites. Plus if u spend most of your time on your cell phone, reminding u that I’m at gamestop a lot. I understand what he was telling me I will use a fucken period. If someone attacks someone personally, about thier commet they do have the right to stand up for themselves. I’m a wolf that will shred the sheep.

            • Niosus

              DanDustEmOff Thomas Huggins

“If u had a job and get out of your house you will understand.”

And I know the moderating has been lacking, but I’ve done a big cleanup earlier today. I’ve banned many of the IPs and accounts that made offensive comments in the past. In the future I will be a lot more aggressive on this front. His “stab” was on the edge of acceptable, but anything more severe will be deleted no matter how good or bad the rest of the comment is.

I want to clean the comments up, but that needs to happen at all levels at the same time. We are pretty forgiving most of the time, but we HAVE to stop commenters attacking each other on a personal level.

Find a comment that’s inappropriate? Click the little arrow in the top right and flag that comment. We’re getting a lot of comments on a lot of articles every day, it’s impossible to keep track of them all.

It is really hard trying to keep the comments clean while at the same time allowing everyone to express their opinions. I used to edit offensive parts out of the comments, but that takes too much time. So if your comment disappears: you either took a stab at someone, or Disqus messes up (that happens from time to time as well)

            • DanDustEmOff

Your kind of missing the point the other guy used foul language on a personal attack on this guy and thats ok standing up for youself isn’t.

              Get a grip
mate your in the wrong just admit it, im not trying to make a big deal of this but mods should be fair and impartial which you are clearly not. Only you think otherwise.

I dont care if you own this site or just mod it if I see something wrong I will drive tell you.

            • Niosus

“I don’t normally stand in for Grammar NazisBut when I do, I say “Use a fucking period for period’s sake!” ”

How is that personal, or even an attack? The person he replied to did have poor punctuation. In that context I don’t see how that comment is offensive. Feel free to explain me but I honestly don’t see it.

If you send me a message on the forums we can talk about this further, I’d like to know why you think I act unfairly. I will not continue talking about this here because it is completely off topic. Ok? Maybe you’re right and I’m not fair without knowing it, maybe we just see things differently. Either way I’d be happy to settle this because my only goal is keeping the comments clean…

            • DanDustEmOff

So what if he has bad grammar did he deserve a response like that for poor punctuation, no he didn’t he could have put his point over politely without using abusive language. I don’t use the forum and dont intend to.

        • DanDustEmOff

Dude nobody cares if he uses correct punctuation its a forum not an essay writing competition

    • DanDustEmOff

What are this weeks winning lottery numbers almighty Nassir

  • http://twitter.com/blondbassist blondbassist

Not sure what the big deal was with MS points, I didn’t mind them at all.

Especially when it meant it only costed me 10 pounds instead of 12 for each battlefield expansion pack as 1200MSP was retailing for 10 quid, whereas PC and PS3 had to pay 12 quid.

    • MattW

Exactly. I kept an eye out for discounts so I could buy dlc that I would get anyway for less than the list price.

    • dpg70

      What exactly is a quid?

      • DanDustEmOff

        Pound £

    • ghjg

There were similar PSN card deals before the PSN hack. Now the retail at face value.

  • http://www.facebook.com/thomas.huggins.7 Thomas Huggins

Finally get to pay straight up for downloads instead of having a minuscule amount of points left over that can’t buy anything.

  • Ameer Akashe

i wish they would get rid of xbox live gold…..

    • Richie Tellez

Got to agree with this. I don’t get why we need to pay for online. Compare to PS’ Plus subscription. The gold is total shit. Can’t even use Netflix without gold…. A service I have already purchased. That and tons of ads. Video ad in every “tab” or w/e they are called sucks since your paying for online access in the 1st place. PS is free and the only ad you’ll see is in the psn store. Not bashing on MS, just think they can do better for their customers. But I highly doubt I’ll see that on the near future.

      • QwietStorm

And yet tens of millions of people tell them every month that it’s ok to be taken advantage of. It’s sad, but Microsoft is making the smart business move. I just wish people weren’t so quick to do what they’re told.

        • kevin lemur

you know whats even sadder about this? i read an article a while back that said Sony might consider a similar idea to Xbox live gold. since Xbox have such a massive subscriber base and people are continually paying for online play why does Sony need to stay free? i hope Sony doesn’t go this route, but i wouldn’t be surprised if one day they start charging since people seem to not care.

          • DanDustEmOff

Sony should start charging people they are not making money and running PSN has a cost involved why should they operate at a loss.

          • jameslara

I doubt they will, and if they do I will stop console gaming. Paying for my internet to play games online only to pay to play games online, ugh my head hurts.

            • DanDustEmOff

Its no different to paying to play on servers. There is a cost involed in running PSN and to expect Sony to keep swollowing up this cost when they are not making profit is unrealistic.

      • DanDustEmOff

Thats like saying I don’t want to pay to have water piped to your house cause water is free. You’re not paying for the internet you’re paying for their services and £30 for a year is a small amount and not even worth complaining about. If you don’t want to pay buy a PS problem solved.

        • Niosus

The issue isn’t really the price, but the fact that it costs money AND they show plenty of ads, while competing platforms have neither. MS isn’t offering significantly more features, especially not if you compare XBL with Steam. Steam has more features, a bigger load (BIG game downloads) and is arguably just a better product. If that can be free without ads, MS is just making pure profit on XBL Gold.

I personally don’t like that stance, just like many others. They basically say: We don’t care about our competition, people will buy our service anyway. That mentality is bad for consumers so for me it is just not an option. If they want my money, they have to fight for it. Give me a good reason to pay and I’ll pay, but I’m not going to support anti consumer arrogance.

Just my opinion btw, so take it with a grain of salt before grabbing the pitchforks…

          • DanDustEmOff

Thats the point if you do not think that it is worth it you do not have to pay for it. Steam is a different model they act as a digital publisher and they make their money that way that is how they can do the format for free.

            • Niosus

Microsoft takes a cut of every sale on Xbox. Just like Steam does for games on Steam. I don’t see the difference. Steam is more than a publisher, they offer a complete platform. That becomes very obvious when you launch big picture. It literally is exactly the same kind of service you’ll find on the consoles. Minus the ads and the paid subscription.

And I know nobody forces you to pay it. From a business and legal standpoint they do nothing wrong, but as a consumer I cannot support it.

            • DanDustEmOff

You do not have to. I was not aware that MS got a cut from every sale. I don’t mean to call you a liar I’m genuinely interested in where you got that info from rather than just accept your word for it. Personally I
dont have a problem with £30 a year its less than a penny a day and I dont mind paying it
and there are not many adds and I dont have a problem with advertising it is an ineffective media.

          • http://www.facebook.com/thomas.huggins.7 Thomas Huggins

            *puts down pitchfork begrudgingly*

The whole point of a business is to make a profit, so I can’t really fault them for that. I might have a problem if the price goes up or if they really start bombarding me with ads.

        • Richie Tellez

I’m not complaining. Just making a point. Why couldn’t they use that money they make out of gold and invest it to get/make better exclusive games for their customer, which is you, me, and anyone else on Xbox. Compare to PS’ exclusive game, Xbox has little to nothing. And I’m not not bashing on xbox again. I use the xbox more then the ps3 mainly cause of friends.

          • DanDustEmOff

The money is for maintaining the network and security it also helps secure early dlc for CoD titles for less than a penny a day I think its a good deal if you dont then don’t support them.

      • http://www.facebook.com/thomas.huggins.7 Thomas Huggins

I wouldn’t consider one ad at the bottom right-hand side of your screen as “tons” of ads.

        • http://twitter.com/falah99tweetbhr Falah Mohammed

I use Adblocker. So your argument is invalid.

          • http://www.facebook.com/thomas.huggins.7 Thomas Huggins

Simple solution to an overblown issue.

  • JustinD

Do we still have to give them 4$ out of every 20?

  • http://rmdclan.com/ CmdrVOODOO

I’m curious to find out if my existing MS Points/Dollars will come with my account from the 360 over to the 720/durango/infinity/supercaliber (I made the last one up). I’d assume because they’re tied to my account they will. I’m sure there are a lot of other people who will have some remaining $$$$ on the 360 when the 720/infinity is released. I’d really like MS to speak to that.
