PSA – Some PlayStation 3 Users Unable to Boot Up Console After Latest Update [Updated]

As a word of caution, a number of PlayStation 3 users are reporting some serious issues after downloading the latest 4.45 firmware update.

According to posters on the official PlayStation 3 support forum, some users are unable to boot up their PlayStation 3 after downloading the update. Others experiencing the same issue have tried restoring file systems, but to avail. So far, it is said to be affecting most users with upgraded hard drives.

According to PlayStation’s official Twitter account, the latest update improved trophy notification options and system stability. Not for all folks, it looks like.

While we wait for official word from Sony, we recommend skipping the update, for now. We’ll make sure to update when we learn more.

Update 3

PlayStation Europe has announced that “A new system software update is planned to be released on June 27 that resolves the issue.”

Update 2

According to reddit user LolBurn, following these steps will alleviate a “bricked” PS3 that was affected by the update.

“you can fix it yourself. to do this, boot into safe mode and re-update the firmware. to access safe mode (i didn’t know it existed until this): power off the ps3, then hold down the power on key until the system has powered up three times. do not release the power key until the third power up. the 1st power up is normal mode (which is broken), the 2nd is video reset mode (which won’t help) but the 3rd will bypass the broken firmware and let you re-update. sony gets bad marks for releasing an incompletely tested firmware update, but kudos for having the safe mode which saves you having to send it in and them from being sued.”

Update 1

For the time being, Sony has taken the system software update (version 4.45) offline as they have found it “caused the XMB to not display on a small number of PS3 systems.” They will announce when it is rereleased.

It’s a shame this has to happen at such a inopportune time. Idiots are going to be using this as a reason to buy the garbage Xbox One.

U sure that X1 is garbage or this PS3 ?

      • John Carroll

Yeah I’m pretty sure the Xbox has had problems with updates oh wait :)

        • betosobreira

Not like PS3… and not going offline for more than a month…

    • ThtJstHapnd

I’m a supporter of both consoles. This won’t sway any ones decision. Yes its a bad time to happen, but not surprising. when you have something removable, like the hd. There are variables that come into play that can effect an update. This problem from the update only hit people that had upgraded their hd. It’s just like pc and driver updates, theres so many variables your bound to have problems. With that said thats one reason I do support the non removable hd from xbox one.

you can call it garbage but thats your opinion. Calling me an or anyone else an idiot for making their own choice is pretty pathetic. To each their own.

Why is it that anything negative From Sony or BF is ok. But when Xbox or CoD do something bad it like the end of the world on this site, double standards ftw.

    • Alex Melendez

You just gotta….. dust em off

    • SAM0A

Implying that xbox or CoD has done something positive recently.

      • DanDustEmOff

What like breaking sales records, having the most online activity of any game out, still having millions of people playing every day. How about pioneering cloud gaming, the posibility of dedicated servers for every MP title, possibly making the hated P2P format a thing of the past. Are none of those things positive?

        • paulinacio

I can care less how many sales COD has made!! Sonys PS4 has cloud gaming and Sony is getting a HUGE amount of support from developers unlike Microsoft where there own developers have nothing good to say about it lol Just chill out and get the console your excited for

          • DanDustEmOff

Your missing the point of my argument.

Sony’s idea for cloud is to support old games rather than new big difference.

If I buy any console it will be a PS4 as it stands now. The Xbox still has my interest though.

            • paulinacio

Sony hasnt confirmed if the PS4 games will have cloud or not!! I personally think it is way to soon for cloud since most people wont have internet fast enough to play game from the cloud

            • DanDustEmOff

I think with use of clever packet data usage they said 1.5mbps would be enough, but I may be wrong. People also said that the internet wasn’t ready for online gaming. It was true at the time but it drove ISP’s to make it better.

I know they havent announced cloud for PS4 which is why I believe that it will not; for the near future at least. As far as backwards compatablity goes I really do not see the point. I still have my Xbox, PS2, N64 and even my NES if I want to play those games I still have them to play it on point is, I never do (well accept for Golden Eye and Killer Instict Gold).

            • paulinacio

Isn’t the 1.5mbps the required speed for the console to work?? I haven’t been keeping up with too much gaming news but I thought that’s what I read somewhere but I could be wrong =)

            • DanDustEmOff

Possibly, but whatever it is they stated that it was much lower than I expected it to be, What is your down speed and ping.

            • paulinacio

its a bit faster then 1.5mbps but it would suck to get disconnected if it goes lower then that due to a lot of bandwidth being used. My ping is usually around 40 to 80 if I’m not mistaken

            • http://www.facebook.com/datkidfromawendaw Clay Johnson

Actually Dan Siby has stated the extent of cloud utilities on PS4.Gaikai, is a cloud streaming service. No different than Netflix other than dealing with games.Sony has also stated that cloud computing on PS4 exists for things like matchmaking, linking and stuff like that. Th

            • DanDustEmOff

Interesting thanks for the intel, can you link please?

              http://www.polygon.com/2013/6/12/4424022/sony-shuhei-yoshida-says-ps4-cloud-computing-calculations

Sorry, I’m doing the best I can with this POS phone I’m using. But you can just Google “PS4 cloud computing” and you’ll more or less get the same thing. Continuing on, I know everyone heard MS say things like” with the cloud we can offload latency sensitive things and AI to the cloud” and stuff like that and people didn’t think it was that much of a big deal given the limited average knowledge on this stuff. But here is an example, at E3 an Xbox Engineer Crenshaw I believe his name, and NASA did a hardware demo tracking the orbital velocity of individual asteroids. which tracks the orbital velocity of asteroids. Alone, Xbox One can manage 40,000 asteroids at once which I found impressive in its own, but with Windows Azure backing X1 up it was effortlessly capable of tracking some 330,000 asteroids simultaneously!
I went on ahead and did the math and that’s a 756% increase! I mean, from me, being a future PS4 owner I an highly impressed at this. From that, you can say that what MS saying is true as with the cloud, processing power increased nearly tenfold! Microsoft said before that here will be a time in Xbox One’s life where developers can create massive worlds capable of sustaining several hundred thousands of players and those worlds remaining there and evolve independent of player influence and all without taxing the individual console. Its a bit too early for us to say but a game like Titanfall and Project Spark actually, could give the us a glimpse at what is come whether you choose to agree with me or no

            • ThtJstHapnd

Heres an example from what I get out of this.

Say your online playing a grand theft auto kind of game. Right now you have a host(your console). Then you have a couple friends. Pedestrians locations, cars, objects, everything is ran from your console and given to other players. So now think about the new system. the world can be created by the server and everyone gets all the info at the same time. So now your console can be dedicated to running just your experience. Pretty awesome if you ask me. Kind of goes a lot the lines of how they are going to run 64 player bf4 on console. Win!

            • http://www.facebook.com/datkidfromawendaw Clay Johnson

64 players is a start. It’s an example of the possibilities of the system, which according to Henshaw includes the ability to feature “10,000 or 100,000 enemies in-game” while maintaining a high level of realism and fluidity in the near-field view by offloading it to the cloud.

            • DanDustEmOff

Cheers pal I will check it out tonight I appreciate you taking the time. I have saw similar tech demos where people have played online shooters from coast to coast in the US with virtually no lag.

The potential to off load to the cloud is also a big innovation it could get to the point where the Cloud handles everything except button presses and character modeling.

Basically it could stream the image of the game to your TV/Monitor making the need for a powerful power hungry noisy PC in your living room a thing of the past.

            • DanDustEmOff

I checked out the links you sent much appreciated here is one you may wish to look at for yourself. Its a Ouya running Boarderlands 2 powered by Nvidia Grid cloud tech.

            • http://www.facebook.com/datkidfromawendaw Clay Johnson

Yep and also, what MS says about every game having Dedicated servers is true. All the publisher has to do is buy the server and that’s it. Microsoft worries about the upkeep meaning when a publisher decides to shutdown, Xbox One gamers are unaffected as Microsoft owns the servers

            • DanDustEmOff

I thought that would happen when they decided to push the cloud. I don’t see why they are not talking about this as I see it as a huge selling point, yet they are not making a big deal out of it. It will be interesting to see how Sony responds to this news and to see if they follow suit.

          • ThtJstHapnd

Your ending was great. The sony having cloud… you are talking about a different kind of cloud. One will be used because the system will need to be connected to play, so devs can use it to it’s full advantage. Ps4 will not need to be connected, so they can’t use to its full potential. Also sony’s cloud is for storing saves and so on like dropbox. next year sony will have the cloud where you can stream your old games from it, but that will require internet being always connected, and if that doesn’t matter then xboxone shouldn’t be a problem either.

        • Just saying

          Still getting a PS4 + BF4 + PS+ bundle:P

          • betosobreira

            Fanboy

            • DanO

So someone buys a Ps4 and automatically they’re a “fanboy?
Go back to the hole you came from.

            • GX1114

Who goes from calling someone a fanboy to telling the person that said that to pretty much “shut the hell up?”

            • DanO

I don’t know, why don’t you figure it out genius?

            • Alex | FamousIsLIVE

You guys say the same about the Xbox One so not a single fuck is given.

            • DanO

“you guys”? What were you referring to when you said that? I don’t go calling people fanboys just because they buy one console or the other. So not a single “fuck” is given to you.

            • Alex Melendez

Im getting an Xbox one pal. Anything you want to say?

            • DanO

DILLIGAF what console you get? Go tell someone else your problems mate.

            • betosobreira

              Maybe you are.

          • DanDustEmOff

Not saying that there is anything wrong with it. If I buy a console it will be a PS4. My point is Sony does bad people on dont care. MS do bad its a big deal. Merely pointing out peoples hypocricy thats all.

            • paulinacio

Nobody said this wasn’t bad thing that happen with the update!! You FAIL to see why people are upset about the X1 with all there restrictions and you think because they don’t affect you that others shouldn’t complain

            • DanDustEmOff

No I do see the point but you fail to see mine. If MS issued a patch that crashed the 360 today, the uproar on this site could be measured on the richter scale, in China. But because its Sony the comment section is like a ghost town in comparison.

            • ThtJstHapnd

It’s because Xbox people are playing their system and not on here flaming Sony people. Now Sony people are on here flaming because their network is down or their system is locked up.

            • Alex | FamousIsLIVE

Restrictions are gone now. So what will you complain about in its place?

            • paulinacio

The lack of support from developers!! Sony is investing a lot more in F2P and is bringing great F2P games like Warframe and Planetside 2 and soon I hope DayZ “Not F2P”

            • Alex | FamousIsLIVE

Those games are not that great though. I mean it’s cool that they are free. But it’s nothing that will be worth playing for more than a few weeks.

            • paulinacio

but that is your opinion. I love Sony exclusives and all the F2P games there bringing because at the end of the day we buy a gaming console to play the games we love

            • Alex | FamousIsLIVE

I thought we just bought them to yell at other people for not agreeing with our opinions??? :O

            • z0ml3ie P1kachu

That they removed the things that made it a new console or different from the other consoles. It’s sad, people will always find something to bitch about.

        • Alex | FamousIsLIVE

          This dude fucking gets it.

    • paulinacio

This issue only affected people with HDD 500 plus from what I’m hearing so I don’t see how you can compare it to all the mistakes Microsoft has made with the X1.

      • DanDustEmOff

So the always online and DRM only affects people without internet and those who buy used games. So your point is?

MS have planned to do this, wrongly yes, but Sony have dropped a ball by pushing a patch that had not been tested.

Another example for years Sony customers have bragged about free PSN. Now that it is not free all of a sudden its good value and worth the money.

I am not saying its OK buy a Xbox One cause its just a bad idea to do so. I am just pointing out the hypocricy.

        • paulinacio

Shit goes wrong with updates and by no means is it a new occurrence. I enjoy playing on PS3 and I enjoyed playing COD on Xbox 360 but that was about the only thing I used it for. I’m picking what I think will be the best Gaming console for Next Gen and that is the PS4 for me since a lot of the restriction will really affect me

          • DanDustEmOff

Sorry but the Xbox has never had an update as bad as this, it is a total Fup. Crashing the console is a fatal error that could do serious damage to any info on the HDD.

            • GX1114

Xbox never had an update as bad as this… But the Xbox ONE is pretty much the “shitty update.” Lets say Microsoft gets hacked again. For a long time. How’s that 24-hour verification going to go, huh? After those 24 hours your xbox one will be completely useless. At least PS4 will offer free offline so people would have something to do if they got hacked or had serious maintenace.

But I gotta agree, this wasn’t the best update Sony’s ever done. At least it didn’t affect me :D

            • DanDustEmOff

Lol its is no argument there? But I have never known Xbox live be down for more than a couple of hours, let alone 24 of them. I am not saying it has never happened, just it has never happend to me in the 6 years I have been on Xbox Live.

            • paulinacio

it was actually down for like 2 weeks back in 2008 and when it finally came back on it was off and on for sometime

            • DanDustEmOff

Was that globally or local. I honestly dont recall it and I have had live since 07.

            • paulinacio

I’m not sure if it was global or not but I think it was some kind of DDOS Attack

            • GX1114

My cousin’s had live for a LONG time and she recalled LIVE going down once or twice. I have a live account that I don’t use often anymore, but mostly because when I log in to it it says:
“Xbox LIVE is down momentarily for maintenance”
And I’m not kidding, my neighbor RIGHT NEXT to my house was on Halo 3 for the past few hours and said it was fine. He even logged off and re-logged in and said he was able to

            • ThtJstHapnd

I have been kicked off live twice in 8 years… both times were because they released dashboard updates when I was online. I have three friends that only use xbox when they can’t get on psn. I’m not bashing psn but those friends are on xbox quite often. One gets on, I invite to party and say whats up. he will reply, psn is down for maintenance.

now in defense of sony(which I don’t do often) psn was free for the most part, you can’t expect the quality of live from psn when it’s free.

            • James Mulhall

I think it was global. Apparently the entire system wasn’t down, it was up except a lot of people had issues connecting and people would randomly lose connection to XBL, etc.. apparently it was near Christmas time 2007 into early 2008.

            • DanDustEmOff

I had no issue connecting at that time. That was when CoD 4 was launched and I never had a problem playing. I am on fiber connection though.

            • Thomas

There’s a big difference between a group of careless XBL users getting hacked and the whole PSN getting hacked.

            • paulinacio

Lol and there a difference from hackers with little experience gaining access to Live accounts and the hackers who were very skilled at what they do who hacked PSN. I think there name was anonymous.

            • Thomas

Doesn’t matter who did it, it just matters that it has been done. The guy implied XBL has been hacked and it has not. Not saying it can’t be done but, to date, it has yet to hacked.

            • J KiLLa

Microsoft get hacked lay off the drugs. And did you forget the 3 months Sony went offline for 3 months or so because a security breach. But yeah MS will get hacked when its running 3 operating systems and has never had any major issues that i can remember. And have never released a update that crashed peoples shit.

            • J KiLLa

Free offline honestly. And MS got rid of the 24hr check just so you know.

            • Raymond Featherston

Actually I beg to differ, while not quite as bad as this one of the Xbox updates wiped my dads downloads, and he had to redownload 6+ hours of stuff. He called MS and although it was said to be rare it had happened to a few people and for some of them their entire set of installs was wiped. Of course this was isolated and I will admit this is worse, but it is also isolated.

            • DanDustEmOff

Sorry dude I have had evry update since 2006 never had anything like that happen to me or anyone. Gotta call BS on that one.

        • Jason

          I agree 100%

        • Alex | FamousIsLIVE

You are a little too smart for the people in the comment section of this website. Anything against what they believe, Which is Battlefield and Playstations is completely wrong.

          • http://www.facebook.com/datkidfromawendaw Clay Johnson

Yep, this site is slowly starting to turn into IGN comment section

            • Alex | FamousIsLIVE

I still give my opinion on issues. I just try to be less ignorant about it compared to the others.

            • http://www.facebook.com/datkidfromawendaw Clay Johnson

Exactly. There’s just too many people shooting down the opinions of others, all the while insisting on themselves being right all of the time

            • Alex | FamousIsLIVE

All it would take is one MOD that stops fanboying and all would be ok

    • Mike Limpus

The difference is that this was a simple error, whereas the Xbone’s shit was done intentionally.

  • John Carroll

Lol have fun with your PS4 not working after every update and your system being down for days at a time for a routine PS Store update or better yet when your service is down for a month plus because someone hacked the shit ass infrastructure of PS online service.

    • betosobreira

That’s ok… Sony give them 2 games for free AFTER A MONTH BEING OFFLINE and they accept. Idiots.

      • John Carroll

        This^

      • Name

I feel like the free games were kinda sucky ones… Then again, for free

        • DanO

Infamous was sucky? If I remember correctly I got Infamous and Dead Nations (both great games imo)

      • xbox rules

Yea xbox started giving away 2 free games for being a xbox gold member plus we also get that mmo world of tanks.

    • paulinacio

lol Why?? Why do you feel you need to say such ridiculous nonsense?? If memory serves me correctly Xbox was hacked when it 1st came out and PSN was only hacked once + updates only happen maybe once a month for just a few hour which is a small price to pay.. oh wait its FREE =)

    • dpg70

This is a big moment for you. Enjoy it.

    • NARDDAWG TGMTEL

        • paulinacio

XBL went down back in 2008 for like 2 weeks if memory serves me correctly and when it came back on it was off and on for sometime and there has been many accounts stolen due to Hotmail/outlooks poor security

          • DanDustEmOff

People lose accounts because they fall for free MS point scams and hand over their password and

lol It wasn’t that kind of hack tho. My account was also hacked and I was able to regain access but my XBL account was banned for life before I could recover it =( and Microsoft said there was nothing they could do about it. I was able to play on purchased games and DLC but lost access to it when I had to replace my HDD and was unable to put my old XBL on the HDD =( Some luck. I do think the security on hotmail has been improved

ehh hotmail sucks anyway, I only use it for my LIVE account, I use GMail for everything else becaue Google is just the most awesome company ever

        • DanO

Apparently you know nothing about your own console, lol =P

You understand PSN was hacked ONCE, and by Anonymous. You really can’t avoid that, and routine PS store updates BARELY take down PSN. And besides, Sony gave players FREE MULTIPLAYER, so obviously there will be updates here and then. It’s like Team Fortress 2. There’s an update every other day, but only because it’s free to play

Bla bla bla Microsoft makes mistakes…

  • xbox rules

To the mods…. recently one of you guys sent me a email stating I need to be nicer to other people such as sony fan boys. If some one insults my intelligence I have the right to stand up and defend myself. If u block one user namer or ip I have 5 other accounts I can use as also a ip changer. Now since that’s out of my system. People have the right with there opinion I still think that the xbox one will be the top sold system for the holidays. Microsoft will always be the most played system. Because its Microsoft. Sony might get a lot of users from xbox because they don’t like how they have restrictions on the system. I understand why they are doing all this to prevent piratcy. Dont get me wrong I used to be one of those people who have had a modded system and games like a week before they get released. The 24 hour check in is so they can see if any one modded and get ip banned probaly.

    • paulinacio

Im not sure if a simple IP changer will help and if it did, it seems like a lot of trouble to go threw then just taking a chill pill when having a discussion lol

    • DanO

“If some one insults my intelligence” Dude? What intelligence? Lol

I’m also getting a ps4 as well. Both will have subscription based membership no more free play on the PlayStation which sucks. Let us take a vote how many people are going to get the xbox over playstation. Both will sell equally I believe but a lot of little kids will probably go to playstation because its cheaper for there parents to buy.playstation will be kid friendly xbox will be mostly adults I like that math I did

    • paulinacio

lol Nice math.. PS4 is a gamers console and X1 is a entertainment box in my opinion + PS4 is actually destroying X1 in overall Pre-orders

      • xbox rules

Don’t for get online orders for the xbox gamestop shut off the preorder for the xbox but the 300, 000 servers look sweet for the xbox

        • paulinacio

What do you mean by “gamestop shutoff the preorder for the xbox”? I dont believe crap Gamestop has to say about Xbox

      • ThtJstHapnd

Sony is allowing preorders for what they “predict” they can make by launch. MS is only allowing by current flow and production, so that they don’t have a preorder for someone they can’t submit to.

Preorders for the one are being more limited than for the ps4. That’s why all the speculation for Ps4 is outselling it. When someone lays out 40 consoles and the other only allows allotments of 6 or so a day… the presales are going to be a little different.

        • paulinacio

lol is that why at least 80% of people vote for PS4 when it comes to what there Pre-ordering?? Also do you think Microsoft would have changed there policies if they were dominating Pr orders?? I’m sure we will see a change now that they changed there policies but many gamers are still pissed

    • Mitch

Online paying doesn’t suck since you get games each month which you keep as long as your subscription is active.

    • ThtJstHapnd

So on an article about Sony firmware you want to take a vote on PS4 or Xboxone.. wow thats not a bias place to do that. lol

  • Mike Limpus

Great. Now I’m afraid my PS3 is gonna explode when I turn it on.

    Thanks, Obama.

  • WarHero

Boy Sony caught that fast, now I can play my PS3

  • Mitch

To all MS fanboys, if this would happen to the 360 MS would simply say ‘well, but the old Xbox!’

  • Ramp Lion

Is PSN not working for anybody else?

  • J KiLLa

So is this what to expect for PS4 firmware too. I’m so glad i didn’t update my FW i’d be pissed if i couldn’t play The Last of Us

  • Kishan Amin

mine wont even turn on so ur lucky

  • ThtJstHapnd

I don’t like sony much after they wouldn’t replace my BD drive when I sent it in. Then I got it back and it bricked within a month and they wouldn’t cover that. Yet MS covered my RROD two years after I bought it.

Now with that said I give sony props for including a safe mode. Thats great people are able to get around the lockup. I for one don’t want to see any gamer without their system even if it’s the system I don’t like.

  • Cole.

PSA! You can fix your bricked ps3 just look it up!

PS3 has safe mode, Xbox 360 has… really neat red lights. #flamewarsaredumb
