Guerrilla Games Working On A New IP Outside Of Killzone

Guerrilla Games, best known for their work on the highly acclaimed Killzone franchise, are busy giving Shadow Fall its final touches in prep for its PlayStation 4 release this November 15. But that hasn’t stopped staff members from already moving on to an entirely different project unrelated to the Killzone series.

Eurogamer confirmed in an interview lead designer of Guerrila Games, Eric Boltjes, that the team is indeed working on a new IP.

“I can be true about it, yes. That’s definitely what’s happening right now. I can’t tell you what we’re thinking of but yes,” he said.

“As a studio we do want to branch out, and we have started work on a new IP, something completely different to Killzone. I don’t want to say anything about it right now, but as a studio we do want to keep it fresh.”

“The artists and the coders work the longest, and then QA. But the designers, at some point their work is done. They’re not allowed to touch the game because that changes everything for all other departments.

“So about three to four months before you ship, the designers sit down and think, what can we do for the next one.

“That happened then [with Killzone 3 to Shadow Fall] as well. So, about three years ago we went into that phase. The really tricky part about that phase is not trying to do too much. You have a room full of people and they all have a different idea of what they want to change about the game. They can’t do everything, especially if you only have two-and-a-half years to build it.”

We last reported that Guerrilla Games were working on a new project back in June of 2012, though that was most likely Killzone: Shadow Fall. It’ll be interesting to see what the team comes up with next.

I’d like to see them tackle some sort of adventure RPG sort of game. Guerrilla has such an amazing art department. Anything that gives their art department tons of freedom will be good for gamers.

There was some info uncovered a year or two ago that sounded something like a first person lord of the rings kind of setting, with emphasis on magic. I don’t know if that’s what this IP will turn into, but I wouldn’t mind seeing GG handle that.

    • SubXero

I just commented similarly to this. I’ve wanted them to do an open world RPG for years for the same reasons you’ve listed.

Next gen really revitalized the open world thing. So many new opprotunities,

and That’s how PS4 will suffocate Xbox One … Some people think couple of Time exclusive games are big deal, others might think yeah PS4 just got Killzone and bunch of other games at launch, but when u reach to second year, PS4 will destroy Xbox one piece by piece … all SONY’s first part devs are working on PS4 games, this includes many more that they haven’t announce their titles yet, such as ND or QD … bad news for Xbox fanboys is that in the second year or 3rd MS will only treat them with some COD DLC early access or Halo/Forza each year!!! where as SONY will throw AAA exclusives to PS4 much more frequently ….

    • Joey Marcelo Asturias

A lot of Sony’s past highly acclaimed exclusives have made their way to the Xbox 360 and/or will be on the Xbox One, some of which are MGS and Kingdom Hearts. Not to mention some devs that used to work solely for PS, are not only moving to Xbox but are becoming Xbox only devs (Insomniac Games). Don’t want to say that means anything more than simply what it is but its too early to make any clear assumption for either console. So on that note, please stop fanboying, its getting a little old. I personally will be using my PS4 solely for the F2P titles (KZ might be the only game get on the PS4 for a few months) and will be using my X1 for all other games.

The order 1886, Infamous: 2nd son ?! Both are within the launch window of PS4, Both are AAA games from SONY 1st party devs. Ooops

        • Ryupyroa

The Order isn’t in the launch window. It might not even be out in 2014.

          • Aria68

            It’ll be out in 2014 …

            • Ryupyroa

No one said that. With what they’ve talked about and shown us, it’ll likely be 2015.

Insomniac is “100% independent” and will continue to dev. games for Playstation as well. Also.. the same can be said about Microsoft about the 1st part developers developing on PS such as Bungie which made Xbox biggest franchise “Halo”

    • http://mp1st.com/ David Veselka

“all SONY’s first part devs are working on PS4 games” And Microsoft’s first-party devs just decided to drop working on exclusive Xbox One games?

“bad news for Xbox fanboys is that in the second year or 3rd MS will only treat them with some COD DLC early access or Halo/Forza each year!!!” Because X1 has no unannounced exclusives, right?

Don’t mean to pick on you, but your thoughts are a little fact-less and unfair :)

The reality is that SONY has more beefier AAA 1st party games, their exclusive treatment support last longer, ex (PS3 is still getting the topnotch games from it’s devs and not even finished yet) … the fact of the matter is that apparently SONY’s first party devs are capable of making 2 games at once … ex: Quantic dreams: (Beyond, unannounced Project singularity for PS4), ND: (TLOU, possibly UC4), GG: (Killzone:SF, unannounced games), Polyphony Digital: (GT6, probably GT7 for PS4) … There is little no doubt that SONY increased capacity in it’s 1st party devs have grown over a time, but now we actually see the results, 8 triple A/hard core games coming up from only 4 studios! which represents at least 4 more unannounced exclusive games for PS4 platform from only 4 of their 1st devs … im not even talking about”The Order 1886″ or “Deep Down” …
You want more ?! The Main Santa Monica team behind God of War:Ascension is also working on PS4 exclusive which is again unannounced … The point is Microsoft has already shown what they have in production and what they don’t have and what even plan to make, such as Halo5; a game that even the name of it wasn’t official until last couple of months, as if MS wanted to show everything they had or plan to have …
where as SONY got a lot more, I MEAN ALOT MORE! In fact their major ones are still under wrap!
You see where im going ?!!!
Can u say the same thing about Xbox one or MS first parties ? i mean only thing i can think of could be Gears of war team, Insomniac games for X1, otherwise all the major ones have already announced their games…
You have to admit that SONY can literally wipe it’s shiz with the amount of AAA exclusive that it has for PS4 (That they didn’t even want/need to show or even announced those games!)
As if they are so relax and conformable by showing just portion of their games! which i think that’s the case, considering the amount of their pre orders! As if they don’t want to hype more than they can supply!

        • http://mp1st.com/ David Veselka

I agree the PS3 has a beefier selection of exclusive titles, no doubt. I simply thought it wasn’t fair to assume MS won’t be on top of X1 exclusives other than “COD DLC early access or Halo/Forza each year”.

If we’re going to go there, I also think it’s only fair to mention that the Xbox 360 is the only console home to an exclusive title that has rivalled even the most popular multi-platform title in video game history, in terms of popularity. Of course, if you’re not a fan of Halo, then that doesn’t matter, but I’ve yet to see a PS exclusive that has “stood the test of time” as Halo did (and may or may not continue to do so).

That said, TLOU is, in my eyes, Game of the Year (well, maybe GTA 5 is, but TLOU is pretty damned close), and I really enjoyed Heavy Rain as well as the Uncharted series. Those were experiences that, albeit short, were unlike anything you can find on any other platform.

My final point: It will take more than to high volume of pretty exclusives that don’t expand much beyond the single player to “crush” the X1.

It’s great that you are trying to have a discussion with someone who projects a lot of points, but at the end of the day the PS4 is going to outsell the Xbox One on a similar level to that of the PS2 and Xbox. They shot themselves in the foot way too much and whether it’s publicity or hardcore facts about the consoles, Microsoft has no way out of this debacle.

        • http://mp1st.com/ David Veselka

Doesn’t matter to me who outsells who. I just don’t think it’s fair to assume that Microsoft has simply quit making exclusive titles. ‘Tis all :)

          • Soldier

Companies haven’t stopped making exclusive titles for the X1 but they should after the sales disaster and losses they will soon incur.

I found this yesterday. This is how they advertise the xbox in india. I mean come on, a trillion dollar company can’t be this unprofessional.

I’ve been hoping for as long as I’ve known about this new IP that it would be an open world RPG a la The Elder Scrolls. I REALLY hope that’s what this turns out to be. I’d love to see a first party open world RPG and I think GG is the perfect studio to do it.

I’m pretty sure this is public knowledge after Killzone 3 was released?
