Incoming PS4 Update Removes HDCP, Lets You Stream in 720p, Archive, and Save Media to USB

Significant new updates are coming to Sony’s PlayStation 4 in the upcoming weeks.

“I’m happy to report that, as a direct result of your feedback, we’ll soon be bringing some of your most-requested features to PS4 with a system software update in the upcoming weeks,” writes director and product planner Scott McCarthy in a recent PS Blog update. “These features and additions will help make your PS4 even more socially connected by further enabling you to customize your most epic gaming moments and granting even more options to show them to your friends.”

In a future update, Sony will add a rich video editor with a simple tool to help personalize video clips. You’ll also be able to export and save videos and screenshots with the SHARE button to a USB drive. For recording purposes with third party devices, Sony will also allow users to turn off HDCP for capturing gameplay via HDMI.

Sony is also working with Twitch to deliver the ability to archive Twitch broadcasts, as well as to increase broadcast quality to a  720p resolution.

“We’ll have more to come on these updates and more in the coming weeks,” says McCarthy.

    Sounds good to me!
However, one small thing is really annoying me: missing notifications when a friends goes online or offline. If a friend goes online, I have no way to check but to go to my friends list.

The amount of times I don’t notice a friend coming online who’d play a game or two, never understood why they couldn’t have done it straight away.

      • SubXero

It’s odd considering it was like that on the PS3. I don’t mind though since I always disable notifications anyway :P I hate crap popping up and blocking off any portion of my screen while I’m trying to play online.

    PS4 .. From Players,to Players ..

  • Work Hard, Twerk Harder

I know the quality of the livestreaming wasn’t the greatest, but it wasn’t less than 720p before, was it?

    • Michael Clanton

      yes it was less

    • SubXero

      Yeah, it was 540P.

      • Work Hard, Twerk Harder

Did this include watching it from a computer, not just the “Live from Playstation” button? (on the PS4 of course)

        • SubXero

Yeah, the streams were in 540P.

        • Mitch

          Pretty sure both

    • NinoBr0wn

Doesn’t matter where you watched it, the source wasn’t allowing HD output. Made me laugh every time I saw stupid commentors on PS4 saying their quality was fine and it must be your TV.

I’m really glad Sony is staying true to their word with the HDCP stuff. It seemed like one of those issues they intended to just brush under the rug and hope everyone forgot about.

  • Michael Clanton

so they are basically adding stuff the x1 does..except the HDCP stuff.
If you read the wording it said updates…meaning all of that probably wont be in the next update. I forgot the x1 doesnt do the usb drive stuff, but this really isnt a big deal update, and its not clear whats going to be in the next update.

    • yardis

The twitch stuff is in a different update.

    • paulinacio

HUH?? Should they not add Features that Xbox One has for the sake of Xbox One having them already?? lol PS4 had many features 1st that Xbox One later got in future updates

    • NinoBr0wn

You are trying way too hard.

  • betosobreira

    Adding resources from X1…. nice.

    • Daniel

Sony also had twitch since launch. The X1 had twitch streaming since when? 8 days ago?

I wonder what platform will be first to have 4k ( XBONE OR PS4 ) if ps4 is suppose to be powerful but cant stream 1080p on twich….and XBONE cant due 1080p now…I wonder which platform can actually do 4k maybe 4k on the consoles wont look that great..idk..

    • SubXero

Regardless of who’s first, I highly doubt we’ll see anything other than retro indie titles output in 4K during this generation of consoles and that’s if we see anything in 4K at all.

    • pot51e

Sony have already opted out of 4K games on the PS4, but will do 4K movies.

    • jj16802

We’ll probably have to wait till next gen.

I doubt either of them. Sony has flat out said no to 4K games this gen while Microsoft might just upscale. Both can output photo and video at 4K(provided you have a 4K ready cable on PS4) The Xbox One dashboard can be displayed at UHD also

  • dpg70

That addresses the glaring holes with recorded gameplay. The editor is crap and you have limited options for getting them off the console.

Crapstation 4 vs my computer. No contest.

Based on my fans, that fan is directing the heat back into the PC.
