Activision Deems Destiny Biggest New Video Game Franchise Launch Ever

One day after release, and Destiny, an open-world first-person shooter from iconic video game developer Bungie, has become the biggest new video game franchise launch in history, claims publisher Activision.

In a note to the press, Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick wrote that, “Based on extraordinary audience demand, retail and first party orders worldwide have exceeded $500 million for Destiny.” The title launched at over 11,000 midnight openings around the world in over 178 countries.

Previously Destiny was noted as the most pre-ordered new IP to-date.

More important, to us, at least, Activision and Bungie launched Destiny successfully not only in units sold to retailer, but also appear to have achieved a stable release with zero down time or technical issues experienced on launch day. As AAA titles are becoming more and more ambitious in scope and online functionality, smooth and satisfying launches in the eyes of the consumer are becoming all the more uncommon. As far as we’re concern, Destiny nailed it.

Surely the 4, 638, 937 participants of Destiny’s beta were a contributing factor.
