Activision Puts Its Pinky to Its Mouth, Black Ops 2 Earns $1 Billion in 15 Days

With his pinky to his mouth, CEO of Activision Blizzard Bobby Kotick grinned as he looked to his team and said with satisfaction, ‘1 billion dollars.’ Well, not quite. But, he that what he was thinking, surely.

Today, Activision Blizzard announced that Treyarch’s Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 has cross the $1 billion mark in worldwide retail sales, according to Chart-Track retail customer sell-through information and internal company estimates. Not only is that a lot of money, but it was only achieved within 15 days.

Putting things into perspective, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 reached the $1 billion mark within 16 days last year, while James Cameron’s “Avatar” crossed it in 17 days back in 2009 – the current box office record for featured films.

“The release of Call of Duty® has been one of the most significant entertainment events of each of the last six years,” said Kotick. “Since Call of Duty was launched, cumulative franchise revenues from players around the world are greater than current worldwide box office receipts to date for the top-10 grossing films of 2012 combined.  Life-to-date sales for the Call of Duty franchise have exceeded worldwide theatrical box office receipts for ‘Harry Potter’ and ‘Star Wars,’ the two most successful movie franchises of all time.”

Activision has also indicated that more than 150 million hours have been logged online playing Black Ops 2 on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 since release.

“Entertainment franchises that captivate audiences for as long as Call of Duty has, on the scale that Call of Duty has, are very rare things. And it takes a lot of brilliant people working across many different disciplines to make it happen. It is incredibly humbling and gratifying to be a part of,” said Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision Publishing. “In order for Call of Duty to remain the entertainment juggernaut that it is, and keep our fans coming back for more, we need to continue to bring fresh ideas and new innovations to the table every time, while always staying true to what people fell in love with in the first place. That’s what we did with Call of Duty: Black Ops II, and that’s what we intend to keep on doing. This is an incredible milestone for an incredible franchise, and I want to thank every passionate, talented, committed person on our team who made it happen.”

Oddly, our latest reports indicated that Call of Duty sales were in decline. Specifically, Black Ops 2 sales were down by 15%. Looks like Call of Duty isn’t backing down so easy after all.

  • Activison Put its pinky to its mouth..

That title got my attention quickly..

    • Exactly why it was worded that way. Because they wanted you to click on it. Not necessarily because they wanted you to read the article, but because they needed you to click on it.

      • Alpine Maffu

        Blimey someone is sceptical today!

      • Niosus

Knowing David, he probably just found that funny. Of course it does catch your attention, but hey, that’s kind of the job of a headline…

And we actually do want people to read the articles. You can only fool people so many times. Our evil plan for world domination includes keeping people on this site, reading the articles!

I’m not sure how seriously you meant that comment, but I can assure you nobody is getting rich off MP1st (yet). We’re a bunch of guys doing what we love, making a bit of money in the process. Lol… I wish we had an evil scheme to get rich quickly… how cool would that be!

        • pot51e

“….. I wish we had an evil scheme to get rich quickly…”. So, you want to work for Activision, eh? 🙂

          • Niosus

Maybe we should start charging for content… how does 99c/article sounds like? 😉 DLN, downloadable news! The future!

        • Every time you record a stat of someone clicking through in some fashion, you have now documented the value of your Web site. The value of the Web site also works into the value of the domain name. So it’s not about earning money right now, it’s about increasing the value of By the time you’ve decided to sell, it could be worth a considerable sum of cash. If I wanted to see headlines like that, I’d look to UK tabloids.

          • Niosus

You assume we run MP1st to make money. We don’t. MP1st started out as a hobby project and exceeded our wildest imagination. I’d call you crazy if you told me back then how far we’d get in a little over a year.

Our intention isn’t to sell it off on its peak or get rich by running it. It never was, it never will be. I work on MP1st because I love working on it. That’s true for the entire team. There is no conspiracy, there is no plan to sell it off… in contrary… I would do everything in my power to prevent that from happening. I find your accusations almost insulting. I’ve put many thousands of hours in this site as a volunteer, just like everyone else on the team.

Claiming that we do this just for the money without even the slightest bit of evidence is downright disrespectful. We put blood, sweat and tears into getting good content to our readers, and in return you accuse us of being greedy because we thought putting a little joke in a headline would be cool? You’re probably just a troll, but if you’re not… How would you like it if I were to blindly accuse you of being cheap leech because you’re most likely running adblock!? Think about it…

      It’s a Dr. Evil pun……face palm

  • Nemesis_96

    One billion dollars! Awuahahaha

  • pot51e

“none of us are as stupid as all of us”. And this is all the excuse Activision will need to copy and paste again next November…..

    • Truthbringr

Yeah but the hot pocket eaters on the consoles love COD so. Its dead, crucified, regurgitated and mass marketed fish feed but they eat it up like their dino chicken nuggets.

  • PuddingAuxRais1ns

I personally think that, for once since cod 4, I believe that black ops 2 deserves these sales. While black ops 2 has its problems, I’ll take this over mw3 and any cod before it with the exception of cod 4 anyday. I think it would take a few more patches before black ops 2 matches cod 4 but for now, this is the cod that everyone asked for. As a game, I believe that games like halo 4 and far cry 3 deserve more financial success.

    • dango man

so you would pick Blops 2 over mw2 and mw3…you are insane….blops 2 is beyond just getting patched the problems are in the core…but we will just have to wait and see.

      • cheeseburger eddy

You are insane dude. Mw3? really..and yea mw2 was really fun but blops 2 is simply a better game than mw2..And personally i hated cod4. Just feels like blah to me, can not get used to it.

        • PuddingAuxRais1ns

Mw2 and mw3 made cod look bad. Terrible balance, god awful map design, bad spawns, and bad lag comp practically made these games the worst in the series(mw2 being an exception in terms of connectivity). Its funny how its so hard for infinity ward/treyarch to make such a simple and addictive formula work. I think the best cod would basically be cod 4 without juggernaut/stopping power, insanely overpowered and easy to acheive killstreaks(attack heli, uav, pred missle), last stand/final stand/second chance, deathstreaks, bo2 style sniping, smooth 60fps graphics, and balanced level design and there you go, you have a cod that everyone has been asking for.

          • Realbubs

Did you see the spawns on Black Ops 2 ? Its worst than MW2 & MW3 Combined

        • i dont like it becuase its not like the new ones i like the new ones and its so plane

      • JustinD

Maybe copy paste tactics messed up the code and that’s why cod sucks

  • Jasjw

Really? What about lag comp? Quick scoping? Pistol best 1on1 weapon? Tiny maps? Truly awful spawns? Didn’t have that problem in cod2 or 4!!!

    • MW2 is still better.

actually, quickscoping is the same in black ops 2 as it was in cod4.

    • Lufamos

Cod 4 had bad spawns in small maps like killhouse the same is suffered by blops 2 most of the time. Ppl vote for small maps so they can do what the ppl who r dying would hate. But some spawns in certain game modes r definitely annoying though.

Sad day in gaming history because this will just spur them on to copy and paste.

  • kyuubi_clone

and yet they refuse to innovate the series

    • Dirtknap

So you haven’t noticed any of the nuances or obvious changes from title to title throughout CoD’s history?

      • The only innovations the naysayers are looking for are better graphics, vehicles, bigger maps and destructible environments because those things obviously make a game the best in the business. Oh wait, and bullet drop, can’t forget that every game needs bullet drop.

        • Dirtknap

Haha, that sounds like an accurate assesment. Teething issues aside, whatever happened to accepting things for what they are?

          • I honestly dont see how they can add anything else. The more they do, the worse the multiplayer gets. MW3 tried a 30 player game mode that tanked almost immediately, now Treyarch is doing all of this extra unnecessary stuff with integrated ELITE and Theater mode and COD TV enabled when I can watch the same stuff had they just make a youtube channel. Players uffer but the game has to stay cool for the young kids, make em feel better about themselves rby instantl uploading 360 NO SCOPEZ and DROPSHOTS showing off super “1337” skill BROH! I say let CoD just stay CoD until it burns out like Tony Hawk and Guitar Hero as the game cant really evolve past what its know for, small maps fast action, excessive swearing and “60 Framez per secund doood!” It could be more tactical like CoD2 was but then you have your people who would hate that because apparently CoD4 was the first CoD ever made and CoD4 wasnt about that, so therefore CoD can never be about that. It could however have even smaller maps, faster action with 60 FPS….or it could just feature Nuketwon and Rust in every game. Evolution

  • “With his pinky to his mouth, CEO of Activision Blizzard Bobby Kotick
grinned as he looked to his team and said with satisfaction, ’1 billion
dollars.’ Well, not quite. But, he that what he was thinking, surely.” – Pure speculation. I’d love to see you take a more objective, journalistic approach to reporting financials next time.

    • Dude! Lighten up a bit maybe? It was a joke 😐

    • Ryan

you are such a beeyotch. seriously.

    • Dirtknap

The financial details are accurate, any conjecture is clearly meant to entertain and does not defame. If you want a serious journalistic approach to such news, perhaps you spend more time reading Bloomberg, Forbes, The Wall Street Journal or any of the plethora of other financial news sources.

    • thebulky1cometh

Are you serious? Take a joke, you fun-sucking troll.

    • cheeseburger eddy

      Aaron shut up

    • It’s a Dr. Evil pun……face palm. There is a line in the movie…one million dollars mahahahaha.

Yall need to laugh a little….why so serious?

    • Retro

      What a troll

    • Ok everyone. I’ll back off.

  • “And it takes a lot of brilliant people working across many different disciplines to make it happen.” Most of whom were terminated or quit to work at Respawn Entertainment. 🙂

  • Latch

    Ha! Nice headline.

  • The $1 billion almost certainly includes season pass sales. Fewer copies of the game itself were sold compared to MW3.

    • With that logic, wouldn’t they have included Elite sales with MW3’s numbers since that was all the subscription was good for? I’m not calling you a liar, because I haven’t seen any numbers, just asking a question.

      • Lufamos

But what MW3 didn’t have is 180 dollars and 80 dollars special editions that sold out.

      • I could be wrong, but here’s my thinking:

First, VGchartz is the only place that has numbers, and it shows BO2 sales being down quite a bit from MW3. Their numbers may be off somewhat, but there’s no reason this year should be completely inconsistent with past years.

WIth MW3 you paid for Elite which they counted as a separate service and even tried to compare to Hulu and other premium online services. With BO2 you’re paying for BO2 content only, nothing else, meaning they can justify packaging it in with the game itself. On top of that every company has a huge incentive to report increasing sales and so ATVI will obfuscate just a bit to be able to do that even though apples to apples sales are down compared to a year ago.

Not that it matters. I’m making a bigger deal of this than it really it.

  • But they STILL “can’t afford” dedicated servers.

  • Worst game ever

I played for a week before getting completely bored with the game. There’s articles about lag and I’m just bored. I play PC and haven’t really had lag problems that
I’m aware of, it’s just a boring game.

  • Console players have no options when it comes to online FPS. This is the failure of all the other game makers. Not the success of COD.

  • Cynnik

Theater mode doesn’t even work for me it’s been like a week. Fix your F-ing game with your billion dollars wtf

  • Truthbringr

COD = The Justin Bieber of videogames

    • Lord Byakurai

Battlefield = The Tom Cruise of video games.

      • Halo= The Chuck Norris of Games, Comic book tie ins, Short series, Toy lines ect ect.

  • kida

So much for that 10% deficit in sales. This just shows that CoD isn’t dying like haters say…

  • betosobreira

If they were waiting for money to put some efforts and fix the connection issues, lag compensation, etc… so now they have the money. #sarcarsm

  • Lord Byakurai

Good job, Activision. Now use that money to make a new engine.

1 billion dollors in 15 days yet no desicated servers?

  • Now watch, DLC is going to bring them half a trillion dollars before the next CoD. I mean its not at all like Activision is going to decided “Well since we’ve made far more money than ever with This installation of CoD, FREE DLC ALL YEAR FOR OUR FAVORITE FANS YAY EVERYONE!

  • PayneX023

    thats a lot of money
