Destiny – Bungie Wants Everyone To Be Able to Play It

Bungie wants their new IP Destiny to appeal to everyone – people of all ages and all skill levels.

Speaking to Shack News, Bungie’s Jason Jones said, “If you have the basic coordination to play a shooter, you can experience all Destiny has to offer.”

“All core activities can be able to be enjoyed by a novice player, even as we we get into those complex six-player activities, like raids.”

Jones added that Bungie wants “everybody that wants to play to be able to play Destiny.” Not everyone is able to invest the sort of time any energy many hardcore gamers can afford to put into titles like these. He admits that a lof of gamers “don’t want to work hard, they don’t want to read, they don’t want to go on the internet to figure out our bullshit”.

“They want to be entertained, they want to become heroes, they want to feel things they don’t feel in their everyday lives. So our core experience has to be delivered as simply and directly as possible.”

While keeping things inviting for the more casual player, Bungie does have plans to keep the more advanced player hooked. The team knows striking a balance between the two demographics can be a challenge, but Jones said, “We’re going to succeed, because we’re advanced players. We play our own game all the time. We’d go crazy if it was anything less than fun.”

Do you think Bungie is taking the noble route here, or might they stumble trying to cater to a wider audience?

Destiny was revealed earlier today as an always online, first-person “shared world shooter” available for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and future-generation hardware. Learn more about Destiny and check out some of the first gameplay footage here.

    • wolf onatshirt

      • teo2cry

WTF?Just cuz I only have a PC does not make me a PC elitist…you can go judge people somewhere else, idiot!

      • teo2cry

And I bet thousands of people care that it isn’t on PC

      • MikePembo951

Anyone can say the same ‘Console Elitist’ towards YOU – so dont go judging other people just because you’re jealous.

        • Thomas

I doubt it’s jealousy that’s fueling his desire to talk shit.

    • therapiist

fuck it, I just wait for blizzard next mmo game to be release. code name is titan..dont know if its mmorpg or mmofps only time would tell..

    • We have arma 3 and star citizen to look forward too if u want ti play destiny so bad buy an Xbox its like 300 which is pocket change for what we paid for our pcs they are the game developer they decide which consoles it gets released on dont like it become a game developer and make ur own PC game u have no right to complain whatsoever and frankly ur making us look bad.

    • Dirtknap

I was likely planning a foray back into PC gaming in the next year, I’ve been keeping a close eye on the Steambox. This game is potentially going to make me reassess where I go next with my choice of gaming platform. On the pro side, there is nowhere near enough info about upcoming games or hardware to be able to make an informed decision this early on.

  • spellmaster

    ‘as we we’ haha

  • Edelweiss

If the developers were under EA, it would be not only on pc too, but on SNES, Dreamcast, even fuckin ATARI.As a pc player i m so dissapointed.

    • Hol_Up

      you forgot gameboy color.

  • Thomas

I probably missed this on another article but, any idea on a release date/window?

    • Katana67

No definite date, though it does seem fairly far along in the process already. From the small amount of gameplay in the ViDoc, the game seems to be using a similar engine to Reach (visually anyhow). So it’s not like the game hasn’t been worked on for a long while. I’d suspect Fall 2013 or 2014 if I’m wholly wrong with my intial assessment.

      Already taking pre-orders supposedly.

We’ll find out more at E3, which isn’t all that far away. Plus as we hear more about how the next-gen consoles are getting sorted out, I’m sure we’ll get a better picture for a Destiny release.

    • In the Destiny live show IGN had yesterday, there was a Trailer/Dev interview, and at the end it said “2013”.

  • Katana67

Why is everyone bitching about it not having a PC release? I own a gaming PC and an Xbox. I will be able to enjoy this game on Xbox. It’s pretty simple.

I understand a certain level of entitlement/expectation for a game like this to be PC-oriented. But, consider where Bungie really cut their teeth… on console… with the Halo series (Yes, I’m aware of the Marathon series before that on PC, however they really didn’t enjoy the drastic success that they did with Halo). Why would we expect them to do anything different?

    • I’m not surprised it’s for console only when you really think about it, but I think some PC only players are under the impression that the gaming world revolves around them.

This game seems as good a reason to buy either a PS4 or Xbox ______ this fall if you weren’t already planning on getting one.

      • No we know the gaming world now days revolves around consoles and it’s all about money. If gaming would revolved around PC. Gaming would be lightyears ahead. Consoles is holding the game industry back because of the low end hardware. And PC players take the shit cuz we get shitty ports.

        • Katana67

Right, but with Bungie… it’s somewhat different as they really were made famous by their success on console games and with the Halo franchise. It’s not only a desire for more profit, but I’m guessing with Bungie, it’s a respect for their fanbase and community which are (guessing) largely console owners. The thing that bothers me specifically with this, is that people are acting as if it’s a surprise. When in fact, Bungie is focused on console games.

Nobody can dispute the overwhelming power advantage PC’s have, and I acknowledge that a lot of PC games are just console ports. But consider that the games that are ported -from- PC to console are also shitty ports. It works both ways with the power differential.

I wouldn’t say “consoles” themselves are holding the gaming industry back, but I would say that the business models of governing companies sure are.

PC players live in a duality, where they are upset about having to play poor console ports and are (often times) elitist about their advantages over consoles. Luckily, PC gaming is on the rise with titles like Star Citizen racking up record crowdfunding and with ARMA/DayZ getting a huge following out of nowhere.

          • Well that was a well written post. I got nothing more to say, you said it all.

        • Development companies will always play to the masses. Most of these companies wouldn’t exist, or at least have the resources they have, if it weren’t for the hundreds of millions of console players.

As a gamer though, if you don’t have both PC and Console, you’re missing out on a lot. I don’t complain when games are only on PC or only on console because I have both. Again, if you don’t have both you’re unnecessarily missing out on a lot.

          • maybe in the future i will buy a console but for now it’s PC for me. I have a ps1 though.

            • inFamous2-VIC

Time to upgrade bro! :O Especially when the new consoles are promising! PS4 may just win the next generations console war.

            • Im curious how next gen konsoles will look and work.

            • inFamous2-VIC

              As am I.

        • Dirtknap

I understand what you are saying, but it’s an oxymoron of sorts. If gaming was PC-centric we would probably be more or less where we are now, though PC would own the vast majority of the market share, the market would be far smaller meaning less revenue being generated to progress the industry.

  • Hol_Up

I’d hate to work on a seemingly massive game like this and not have it displayed in it’s full potential on PC. but oh well. I’ll get to see all the jaggies on my xbox.

  • Everyone to play? NO PC THIS IS BS!

  • Deadguy

Lots of grammar and spelling errors, MP1st get your shit together.

  • Yay! Lets make games based on the lowest/ dumbest denominator

“He admits that a lof of gamers “don’t want to work hard, they don’t want to read, they don’t want to go on the internet to figure out our bullshit”.

    • Your a moron.

      • inFamous2-VIC

LOL, yes. That was very moronic.

    • Dirtknap

Your comment suggests you don’t understand hard work? It’s a smart play in terms market appeal and can we not have a more casual gaming experience that still provokes thought is engaging and immersive? He’s simply stating Bungie’s ethos in regard to the development of this title, If you want something heavier/more intense, don’t purchase Destiny, look elsewhere for another title.

  • MikePembo951

“everybody that wants to play to be able to play Destiny”

    should read:

“Every PS3 or Xbox 360 gamer that wants to play to be able to play Destiny”

    No PC 🙁
    No Wii U

    It’s certainly not for everybody.

Also, if they don’t add next generation console support this game’s community will dissipate as people buy the new console.

  • >Wants everyone to play

    > Not on biggest platform.

  • BestGeek1

Sad, I was hoping that it would be on pc. I could not get halo because it was only on xbox. Now I will have to miss out on both. I guess the next best game that is similar in the fact that it is future warfare would be Crysis 3. At least they have some brains to market it for the pc just as they do for the consoles. Oh, and too bad for those thinking that console is the only way to go. I know that Valve, the company that makes Steam, is planning to make a console of their own. So Valves console and pc players will be able to play together. Wahoo, too bad for the other console companies that don’t let you cross platform play with each other.
