E3 2013 – Titanfall Won’t Feature Day-One DLC or Micro-Transactions, PlayStation Launch Possible, According To Dev

With more and more titles slowly supporting micro-transaction systems within their games, those who have been eyeing up Respawn Entertainment’s multiplayer-focused first-person shooter, Titanfall, might be happy to know that the team won’t be featuring micro-transaction payments, according to producer Drew McCoy.

“We want to make sure people understand we’re not going to nickel-and-dime you with microtransactions, and we don’t expect you to buy a game, put it in your console, and the first day get asked to spend more money for more content,” McCoy recently told Gamespot. “What you get on the disc is what you bought, and that’s how we’re going to do it.”

On the topic of day-one DLC, McCoy stated “We’re not talking about our plans specifically, but I can say we’re not going to have day-one DLC, and we’re not gonna have microtransactions or anything like that.”

Additionally, although Microsoft has an exclusive deal with Titanfall, it doesn’t mean that a PlayStation 4 release isn’t totally out of the picture, according to a Titanfall dev.

Speaking with Eurogamer on whether Titanfall will ever get a PlayStation launch, lead artist Joel Emslie had this to say:

“It’s definitely not out of the question. We have a huge appreciation for the fans. Coming out and showing it to everybody, we’re super nervous and wanted to make sure everybody loved it. We love all our fans, whatever console they support.”

Titanfall is slated for a spring 2014 release, on the PC, Xbox 360 and Xbox One. Don’t forget to check out the first in-game glimpses of the game by checking out the reveal trailer and some behind the scenes footage.

With a competitive game like this, timed exclusivity would be a killer. I don’t think there are many MP games out there nowadays that have long life spans anymore.

    • Raymond Featherston

Battlefield 3, most mmo’s, Arma, World of Tanks, and quite a few others just to name some who have had decent time spans recently.

      • That guy you might know

Once I thought of short lifespans, the first thing that popped in my head was Crysis 3.

Most likely because of the so sudden release, I still have Crysis 2 at my house. I occasionally play it if I get really bored. Something about it now is just eh to me.

      • DanDustEmOff

Yes but way more have failed in the longevity department than have done well so his point is correct.

        • Raymond Featherston

I didn’t say he was wrong nor was I trying to disprove him. I was just providing examples of things that have had decent lifespans. But what he said isn’t exactly on the mark anyways, because if it was a timed exclusive it would be old to the Xbox owners who get it first, but it would be all new to that PS4 players. So how it dying in popularity on Xbox Live would affect how much it is played on PS4 upon release is beyond me (unless of course someone has both, but at the time of release that will be a minimal amount of people).

  • Eric

If PS4 gets Titan Fall also there is no reason to buy Xbox one

    • tanile

Agreed. This is the only game on the xbox one that really blew me away. PLEEEAAASSSEEEE let it come out for PS4!

      • Eric

Xbox one isnt looking good. Don’t forget they had problems with the processors with xbox one. They had to under clock them to prevent overheat. When more gamers are on PS4 this time, it’ll be where the money is it.

        • RAFA

Agreed. I think that if Microsoft doesn’t come out and clear up all the bullshit they’ve been leaving everywhere than Xbox will be a thing of the past. They should do another presentation on their Xbox campus and change some of their policies and a bit of the hardware (so that Kinect doesn’t have to be connected at all times, etc.). They could even announce a $399 version without a Kinect.

I highly doubt that’s going to happen. We can allready assume that both consoles are going to be sold at least equally (50-50). I’d even say that 40-60 for PS4 is possible. If Sony sells even more than that, which could happen if MS doesn’t do something, than there’s a high chance for many (partially) Xbox One exclusives to be developed for the PS4 as well.

One of the reasons why I can’t decide which console to buy is Titanfall, that game is basically the only reason why Xbox One is still relevant.

    • It’ll be on PS4 a year later. By the time 2015 rolls around, it’s way sloppy seconds.

      • Raymond Featherston

And it being “sloppy seconds” should concern us because? And it matters because?

        • Because you’ll have to wait until 2015 to play that game. And you might get an STD.

      • DanO
        • Facebook kids that don’t have the money to actually buy consoles voting on facebook. Cool.

          • Dirtknap

Please stop, your petulant fanboy rhetoric is growing old.

How about everybody agrees, that their respective motivations to aquire their console of preference are their own?

How about we all hope for true competition between MS and Sony, that this will breed greater innovation and decreases in pricing sooner rather than later?

That we can all high five and get along becuase we’re gamers, not some gangbangers that want to kill the kid down the street becuase the first three digits of his phone number are different to theirs?

            • That’s why I’ll have both consoles this new gen, just like I have now. One to do most of my gaming on, and one for the exclusives.

But if people are going to take facebook polls as reality now, then it’s too late for some.

            • Dirtknap

Fair call, I apologize for my opening in that comment (though you must understand, many of you comments seem quite unobjective), my sentiments in general remain the same and are directed at the general community.

I think you’re a little off in regarding the relevance of the fb poll though. Polling is a stock standard tool for gauging public opinion on anything from politics though to, well, gaming consoles.

There are several polls out there that have been conducted by large publications/organizations and they currently all reflect a dominant lead for the PS4. Where you are correct however, is if consumers use the current data to make buying decisions without an educated opinion, it is too late for them.

Unless we see MS making an about face on their policies which are very unlikely to change any time soon…

“Our policy is our policy, and we’ve stated it. We wanted to put it up
[on Xbox Wire] in unambiguous terms. ‘Here’s what our policy is.’”

…we will see Sony continue to be dominant, although the current 80/20 split will likely narrow.

            • I enjoy the underdog role of the X1. I enjoyed it with the 360 as well. The Power of the Cell was supposed to crush the 360. I was told i was wrong for picking the 360 in 2005. 🙂

            • Dirtknap

I like a good underdog too, although I’m not sure it’s fair on every good underdog story to group the XBONE in with them.
Heading into the next gen it was MS’s race to lose, and it’s their policies that have made them unpopular. If you’re going to advocate the XBONE, ensure its on the merits of its hardware and network model. My feeling on the matter is, regardless of it’s potential technical strengths, the platform shouldn’t be supported until the anti consumer policies are rescinded. I do understand where you’re coming from though 😀

        • paulinacio

OMG the difference in just INSANE

    • WarBroh

No reason to buy an XBONE anyway, just play it on PC or 360

    • James K

Unless you want to continue playing the Halo saga.

  • PertAndPopular

Wow these are the people who made Modern warfare and Modern warfare 2. There is a reason I don’t really like COD anymore and that’s because the real talent left and all we have now are meh games like MW3 and horrendous games like black ops 2.

    • Michael Oakley

what u dont realize is that the makers of this game are the ones who made cod 4

      • DanDustEmOff

Er no he does realise that that is why he says these are the people that made modern warfare aka CoD 4

    • Mitch

I find it funny you said MW2, because all I can think of about that game is the plop BOOM and Painkiller.

    • Morgan Freeman

When you say people, you should be saying person, as either Vince Zampella or Jason West (I always confuse) left Respawn a while back. That bit of news definitely turned me off from Titanfall.

      • 3RDRANGER

It was Jason West that left, but I think he’ll come back someday. I forgot why he left, though.

  • James K

Good. You don’t want to undermine the new IP’s image by saying that they will be plagued by Day one DLC.

    • Mitch

Nope, instead, they take money to make it a (times) exclusive on Xbox One.

  • Dirtknap

That’s a refreshingly old school ethos, hopefully respawn’s ethos doesn’t get bastardized along the way.

    • B_Boss

just gotta keep all the ‘bastards’ out is all lol.

      • Dirtknap

Haha, I am reminded of a certain Exploited track from the days of my misspent youth 😉

  • JK Monroe

    Who cares about Titanfall?

PS4 will get Killzone, Blacklight: Retribution, Warframe, and Planet Side 2.

    • Of all those games, Killzone is the least interesting in my opinion. Nothing they shown off on it yet made me want to want this game.

  • Guest

I’m glad their wont be any micro transactions. I always though they were a waste of resources and time and things that wont fix the problems of the game.

  • kida

I’m glad their wont be any micro transactions. I always though they were
a waste of resources and time on things that wont fix the problems of
    the game.

  • I hope more developers think this route. Exclusive games and platform exclusive content do nothing more than punish gamer. “Oh so even though you’re a gamer, you shall not play this game because you chose to play games on another platform.” Really? Do Blu Ray player manufacturers buy out studios and format exclusive to their player? That’s why Blu Ray was created, market cohesion which is nonexistent in console gaming. I can’t understand why it’s drastically different for video games when the selling point should be additional features the machine provides not how many exclusive games that may or may not be good we have vs the competition

    • Dirtknap

Good rant, and I’m damned curious to find out what would be expected, and how a PS4 version would be implemented too. Anyhow, Vince Zampella deserves a big high five for the path that he has set Respawn on.

  • dpg70

Respawn bet on the wrong horse so it only makes sense to leave the door open.

  • dtoxz

If the ps4 gets this game not only is there no need to buy an Xbox, but also no need to buy another COD title again. Not only does this look 10X better than ANY COD title, but it doesn’t use an outdated engine, and before the game is released, its not talking about DLC, but rather NOT milking its fans. I hope that this game replaces COD and becomes the new “big guy” on the market. Maybe then people will start following these guys business practices by NOT biting the hand that feeds.

  • Devin Jackson

“We love all our fans, whatever console they support.”

Its gonna be ps2 vs xbox for the first half of this generation. But the xbone is more future proof. all bullshit aside.

    • Dirtknap

In theory, yes, but cloud in these applications needs to prove itself on a global scale. Don’t get me wrong, I hope it works like a champ as it will mean great things for the industry as a whole. I also wouldn’t be surprised if Sony has something undisclosed up their sleeves. They have played it close and smart thus far, and while the Playstation division isn’t solely responsible for their current financial status, I would imagine the PS4 is integral to Hirai’s plan in moving Sony back toward the black.

Regardless of platform preference, the closer the competiton the better it pans out for the consumer, so I always want to see as close to that 50/50 marketshare as possible. We’ll just have to wait and see how the coming gen comes out in the wash.

  • Funny that this game has a good chance to win Game of E3, and it’s on the much weaker console. Weird how that works.

  • xbox rules

Xbox once again will have that one month window.. xbox is going to launce nov 5th PlayStation 4 2 days before christmas. Who’s the #1 hacker its this guy…
