MP Talk With LevelCapGaming – Battlefield Hardline Beta: The Verdict

With the Battlefield Hardline Beta coming to a close, it’s time we took a seat at the round table to agree, and perhaps disagree, on a final verdict; Is Visceral Games’ Battlefield Hardline a day-one buy or a bin bargain? And who better to have this conversation with than the main Battlefield man himself, YouTube personality and video game commentator LevelCapGaming, who joins us in today’s Hardline-themed MP Talk.

We invited Mr. LevelCap on to recap the week-long beta and lay down our thoughts on the small offering of the cops vs. criminals shooter Visceral Games has presented to Battlefield fans before Hardline’s official launch on March 17.

Have a listen, but don’t forget to drop by the comment section to tell us what you thought about the Battlefield Hardline Beta. If you could choose only one or two pieces of feedback to give Visceral Games before launch, what would it be?

Thanks, for listening. See you on the Battlefield!

After all those sponsored content, can’t rely on Levelcap judgement at all.

    • Hey, I only had to offer LeveCap a double double Tim Hortons coffee to be in the same chat with Denny. That was about it. I promise.

      • Leon

After listening to your talk it seems that we have similar likes regarding play style, David. 🙂 I am also not a “tank guy”. I’ve been playing BF since BF1942 but always prone to play infantry. That’s why BFH speaks to me so well.

Btw, your voice finally fits my imagination of you. Last time when I listened your video it didn’t fit. Then you said that you had cold and sounded unnatural. Confirmed! 🙂

        • HAHA! That’s odd ’cause we ended up having to use a backup recording track for this one. So, you’re hearing my voice through Skype, not through my headset microphone, like usual.

          • Leon

I will have to listen to you again, then. A clever way to inspire me to listen to your videos! 😀

      • True story.

    • Delta8A

Exactly. Buy BF4 he said. It’s awesome he said.
      Seriously, levelcap has zero personality.

      • Opinions are great

Still there in no denying he would wreck you in multiplayer. Just saying.

        • Delta8A

          GG WP LevelcRap.
He said same thing for BF4 and BFH

          • I said the same thing before each launch. Fundamentally, the games are both great, but Battlefield 4 released on below subpar standards, and I don’t have high hopes for Battlefield: Hardline in terms of launch quality, so I’m not sure how saying this puts into question any ethical standards and wipes how to be objective off the board.

          • Well if it actually is generally accepted as a great game then doesn’t that make it true? Battlefield usually has horrible launches but its still one of the greatest FPS franchises that isn’t an arena FPS.

      • Leon

And because of zero personality he became a youtube personality, right? It doesn’t make much sense.

        • Delta8A

“youtube personality”??? Totalbiscuit is a “Youtube Personality”, not your bellowed LC, who’s got no standards in gaming. Just throw a bone at him and he will happily lure all of his subscribers into another dying shithole franchise. There is no critical thinking in what he is saying.

          • Derpslayer

“There is no critical thinking in what he is saying”

            Pot meet kettle much?

            • Delta8A

yeah, haha. another one with double digit IQ…

    • marpla78

is not only Levelcap, the others are the same…to much “oriented” reviews from these guys.

On topic: I dont think this game worth full price so im going to pass, the game have some fun stuff but overall is not a blast for me, i know is a beta stage but is not the point. Untill The division (ffs whennnnn) is out BF4 will be my game, still having fun with friends.

    • Leon

That’s a little like throwing the baby with bathwater, don’t you think? Certainly, money influence opinions but at the same time he makes valid points. On the top of that he is aware that people know that he is getting paid and are suspicious about him and may lose trust and support. That alone may want him to be even more critical than before.

I don’t mind him saying (for EA) that BF4 or BFH is one of the best game is a franchise as long as he points out good and bad things. And he does, including many, many critical and valid comments. Perhaps more than good comments which are mainly emotional “I feel that…”. The rest is easy to figure out.

  • Opinions are great

I played it and I am buying it. Long time BF fan here. It is not like I am forced to sell my BF4 copy when I buy this. I will play both.

People on the internet act like if someone is buying Hardline that means they are not playing BF4 anymore. LOL Hardline will be a great shooter when I just want to have some mindless fun and not be all serious all the time. i thought it was great especially Hotwire.

    • Venom06

this is EXACTLY how i felt. Hardline is definitely a blast to play, and NOWHERE NEAR a DLC. So much more content, so much more of a unique entity than a DLC. And more than anything, its actually FUN… Sadly, the FPS genre is dominated by alot of biased CoD players that went into the beta with their minds made up that they wouldn’t like anything even remotely similiar to BF4 (despite being on the same engine). i wonder if those 2 that were vehemently against the beta fit into that category. Next time MP1st, when you have a discussion about Hardline, please have more than 1 Battlefield YTer to weigh in on the topic, or just make sure there’s equal yeas to neighs. But anyway, like the guy above said, Hardline will be a solid shooter, because its actually FUN. Issues/Bugs can be addressed. The main thing that matters at the end of the day is is the game fun or not, not if its similiar to a previous title. If that’s the case the CoD AW should have gotten slaughtered (not much different from previous CoDs except for movement and jumping) That’s what this game should be reviewed and judge on, its fun factor.

      • Leon

“The main thing that matters at the end of the day is is the game fun or not…”

Many people don’t get this simple truth and will merge themselves into endless comparison debate and see only details and not what actually matters in a video game.

      • Guest

        Omg, this is too great

      • ckpinkham

Actually, I’m highly biased towards Battlefield, not COD. I didn’t like the 2nd beta. The higher speed was okay, but the guns were so unbalanced with far too much recoil, the maps were a bit small, and weird ass boundaries. Not to mention the stupid blur from the sandstorm, that affected you even INSIDE buildings. Felt too much like COD to me. I actually enjoyed the first beta more. And personally, I don’t think it deserves to be called Battlefield in it’s current state. Not to mention, it’d probably have gone better from a marketing standpoint to just call it Hardline in the first place. That said, at least it doesn’t feel like DLC anymore… but it’s not what I want from a Battlefield game.

Then again, I don’t play hardcore for a reason. Feel like it takes too few bullets and not as much skill (aiming) for kills. Hardline basically felt like Battlefield hardcore (or COD) to me. Oh well, at least the Single-player will be good. And maybe they’ll make it feel more Battlefield.

        • Derpslayer

“Herp derp it doesn’t deserved to be called Battlefield”

Who cares about a word in the title. Can’t believe kids are getting hung up on that. Its called marketing. And I don’t care if they call it PlayDoh Simulator, if its as much fun as the beta I’m buying it.

I’m not too sure how I felt about this game. Almost feels like wasted potential. Maybe game modes like domination would be fun, but too much space for Conquest. And the guns on the helicopters?

Also, will we be able to blast holes in walls like in previous games? Couldn’t in the beta so I wasn’t sure.

    • Like LevelCap mentioned, it sounds like that will depend heavily on the map. Some will be more destructible than others.

      • Timothy David Medric

But in my mind, how much battlefield can they remove and still try and call it battlefield?

        • Solid point. I suppose a healthy way to look at it would be to pretend the shooter was called something else completely. What if it wasn’t a Battlefield title? Did you still find it fun?

  • Leon

I’ve pre-ordered on the basis of extreme fun I had in all three modes. This Beta came as a really big surprise to me since after the 1st Beta I didn’t want to have anything to do with this game.

I’ve reached a level 66 and had over 40 hours of gameplay and simply got…. addicted. This is the game I’ve been waiting for. Something between BF and CoD with the stress on infantry plus fun innovations. It has been like a breeze of a fresh air although because of Beta I didn’t get enough real air. 🙂

  • Leon

It’s good that before listening to this whole conversation I played the Beta myself and enjoyed it. If I didn’t play, if it was not for David and a little for LevelCap I would have probably not only never touched BFH but I would shoot myself in the head. 😛 So depressing…

  • Yevgenij Pekurovskyy

Heist is better than Rush? Have Levelcap played Bad company 2? Or he just means rush from bf4?

    • Leon

Personal opinion versus another personal opinion. You know, it’s not written in stone? Don’t take it too seriously. 🙂

      • Yevgenij Pekurovskyy

Its like saying 30fps is better than 60fps, its not opinion

        • Leon

Nonsensical comparison. In my personal opinion…

        • No it’s not. (It’s not like saying that.)

      • Yevgenij Pekurovskyy

        i actually dont

    • Warlon

Rush was bad in Bad Company 2. It was a copout game mode created for old gen systems to have more action with less players.

      • Guest

        Hahahahahhahahahahabhahahava

        • He’s not entirely wrong. The part about more action with less players. “Battlefield: Bad Company” did not even launch with Conquest because of player count which is sort of odd as Conquest was playable on BF2 with 16 player and appropriate map scaling.

    • Dirtknap

Heist is both dynamic and strategic (as much as I love rush and will miss it not being present in hardline, the reason for its omission makes perfect sense), its non linear setup makes for a lot more chaos and tactical change ups. Heist feels fresh and is quite changeable from match to match.

One of the things that bothered me the most about the game so far is the revive system. The Police force have the defibrillators but the Thieves/Bangers side have the I’m guessing it’s an adrenaline shot canister thing. Now this wouldn’t be a problem if the adrenaline shot could be charged because as it stands now, the Thieves/Bangers can only perform a 20% revive, whereas the Police can perform a 100% revive. Doesn’t seem very balanced to me.

I think a way they could counter this is change the way the canister looks and change it to almost like a syringe. Have a new animation, pulling the back of the syringe to “charge” it like the defib and give that 100% revive. I do understand that there is a perk that makes it so you always revive at 100% but until you get to stage 3 the Thieves/Bangers Operator is severely underpowered compared to the Police side until then.

    TL;DR Thieves/Bangers revive needs a rework

    • Hold on! You actually CAN charge the EpiPen thing. It’s kind of silly because it doesn’t make sense, but you can hold down the trigger (fire button) for a second or two with it in your hand and you’ll hear a little “click” telling you it’s fully “charged”.

I was thinking the exact same thing you wrote, so I played around with it a bit on the last day of the beta. Turns out you can still 100% revive as a criminal!

      • thatoneguy

Yeah I’m dumb. I asked a couple of people on Reddit and they clarified that you can actually charge the cannister thingy to 100% it just threw me off because there is no animation nor an audible cue telling you like the defibs.

        • Yeah, exactly! I expected some sort of animation as well.

    • Guest

Hold down the trigger. They both function exactly the same as a gameplay mechanic.

  • Felipe Rios

I don’t think I’m going to pick the game up. Not hating on the game but I just feel like the Battlefield formula isn’t very good in a cops and robbers setting. I much prefer an ‘actual’ war setting. It was fun from time to time, but I just can’t get over how alien it feels. I guess I’ll just wait until BF5.

With all due respect to MP1st, Levelcap is now a paid shill who’s opinion is rather pointless to listen to. Even when he wasn’t, he did not know what he was talking about on previous BF games. It’s very sad that he is one of the only people that is listened to by the community, but like with many things the masses typically listen to the very but slightly less ignorant.

    • Dirtknap

I’m seeing “paid shill” bandied around by a lot of folks at the moment. Does anyone even remember what caveat emptor means? The moment an individual sees “sponsored by EA Ronku” on a youtubers channel, its time for them to use their self awareness and actively think “hey, perhaps I should use an ounce of critical thinking on this one?”

As much as I dislike its reach, spread and relevance, we live in the social media age and businesses utilizing facetube-o-twattergram is par for the course.

      • Thank you.

      • Soldier

My problem isn’t with LevelCap essentially advertising for EA, it’s with MP1st speaking with someone who has become a paid informant for a corporation masked as an opinionated gaming commentator.

        • Derpslayer

nobody cares what your problem is.

          off ya go.

        • Or, you know, we’re just speaking with someone who has played a lot of Battlefield – more than any of us here.

          It’s really that simple 🙂

          • It’s about ethics in games journalism David. /kappa

          • Soldier

More than any of us here? Uh no, and he is significantly worse than an overwhelming majority of what you would call the competitive Battlefield community.

Not buying Hardline. I am saying this as a huge Battlefield player.
Look at the content Hardline is shipping with, and then look back at what Battlefield 4 shipped with back on October 29th of 2013. Hardline has fewer maps, weapons, paints, camouflages, factions, etc.
I am looking for the next “full-fledged” game in any series to be bigger and better in every way to its predecessor.
To top it off Hardline releasing is only going to hurt the Battlefield 4 player count.

    • Derpslayer

Why don’t you actually go look up how many maps and new vehicles each BF4 and Hardline ship with, and then revise your tantrum. Because Hardline will have no fewer new maps than BF4 or BF3, kiddo.

Its also not a zero sum game. I don’t have to uninstall BF4 to enjoy Hardline, and go back and forth between the two.

      off ya go.

      • Brandon Stern

First and foremost, Battlefield 3 shipped with 9 different maps, Battlefield 4 shipped with 10 different maps, Hardline is shipping with 9. Why would the next game in the series ship with fewer maps then the game before it?
Next, vehicles. Battlefield 3 shipped with 22 vehicles, Battlefield 4 shipped with 37 vehicles, Hardline is shipping with what 25 vehicles?
All I am getting at is Battlefield 4 one-upped Battlefield 3 in many ways, Hardline looks like a much smaller game in terms of content whilst still being a full-priced title.

        • Guest

The quality of bf4 and 3’s content is ass, and most likely hardline’s will be as well

  • DigitalDaniel

    First of all, great podcast.
And I’ll get Hardline. Tried all the betas (even played it at Gamescom) and I really don’t see this as a BF4 re-skin. I’m gonna switch between Hardline, BF4 and Evolve. No reason to quit playing BF4 just because there is other games out there that are equally fun. To the “haters”, RELAX.. BF4 will not disappear from your Origin account. Keep playing it if you love it, simple as that.
