With how things have escalated between the gaming community and EA regarding Star Wars Battlefront II, the term “microtransactions” is a hot button topic right now — and with good reason. Most video game publishers want to implement microtransactions in their games to further bolster the title’s earning potential and revenue stream.
While this tactic has worked on mobile games — and it still does, the same can’t be said for console games. Thankfully, there’s an executive out there that doesn’t think shoehorning microtransactions into console games is a good idea. In a recent interview, Square Enix CEO Yosuke Matsuda mentioned that he thinks microtransactions are better suited for mobile games rather than on console titles.
What people expect and want in a home console game is perhaps quite different from what people want in a mobile game. The way that console games are made, the volume of content and how much effort goes into them, there’s something in that which doesn’t fit in the mind with microtransactions.
You got that right, Mr. Square Enix CEO! Given how lawmakers are very interested in loot boxes and microtransactions now, don’t be surprised if more and more publisher lay low — for at least a while.
Do you agree with Matsuda? Or would you be OK with microtransactions in console games as long as it’s done properly (read: cosmetics only)?

That’s good to hear.
It’s become such a chore to even know which games I want to support anymore. As soon as MTX are mentioned it’s an automatic skip, though. That part is easy.
I’m OK with it as long as it’s just cosmetics. 🙂
Eh, I can tolerate it, but I’m not OK with it. I don’t typically play games that have those things anyway as they’re mostly MP games that do that.
If the game has progression blocking MTX or timers or whatever, I’ll never play it. If it’s got cosmetic ones, I’ll maybe play it later for cheap.
Even if it’s just cosmetic items, why not sell them as dlc so players can actually get what they’re paying for, instead of introducing a “random” component to force players to pay several times until they get what they really want?
