Steam Releases a Free-to-Play Version of Gotham City Impostors

A few days ago, Steam had some new registries added, one of which was for Gotham City Impostors. Many speculated that the game would be going free-to-play, considering that a file was titled “Gotham City Impostors F2P Trailer” and just as such, the speculations were indeed true.

Many steam users awoke today (and somewhat angry) to find that Gotham City Impostors F2P was downloaded and installed into their Steam Library. The game is playable and is free-to-play as reported, though for some, the game can’t be removed from their libary, an issue which is being resolved.

The logo has been slightly modified to include the wording “Free to Play”

Here are some details about the game, as listed on the official page.

Hatched from the twisted minds at Monolith Productions, Gotham City Impostors is a download-only multiplayer FPS that pits violent vigilantes dressed up like Batman against craven criminals dressed up like the Joker in open warfare on the streets of Gotham City.

About The Game

Hatched from the twisted minds at Monolith Productions, Gotham City Impostors is a download-only multiplayer FPS that pits violent vigilantes dressed up like Batman against craven criminals dressed up like the Joker in open warfare on the streets of Gotham City.

Key Features

  • Why fight crime when you can kill it… Gotham City has gone insane! Batman is up to his pointy ears in unwanted “helpers” determined to dish out their own bloodthirsty brand of vigilante justice in his name (and image). Meanwhile, a small army of self-appointed junior Jokerz has turned the streets of Gotham into a barmy battlefield of bullets, bodies, and bear traps.
  • More customization than you can shake a shotgun at… Packing more customization than you can shake a shotgun at, you get to choose the guns, gadgets and even the hairdos that fit your personality and play style. It doesn’t matter if you want to be a mighty muscleman on roller skates with a hunting bow or a lithe lassie packing a homebrew rocket launcher and glider wings, Gotham City Impostors does not have rigid character classes and lets you play the way you want.
  • 1000 levels of player advancement overflowing with upgrades and unlocks… A robust level up system lets you unlock all the items required to make your impostor as crazy as you desire. Whether you prefer to develop your impostor by proving your prowess in solo challenges designed to test your skills and reflexes or by battling your way to the top of the scoreboard in several delightfully over-the-top multiplayer modes, there’s a surefire way for you to realize your preposterous potential!

Screens

We do expect a trailer to arrive real soon, at which point I will update this post.

So how do you guys feel about Gotham City Impostors going F2P? It’s definitely worth a look if you haven’t tried it out yet, even though it doesn’t look that great graphically, the gameplay however may be a bit surprising.

Thanks Dieger for posting the tip on four Forums.

Update

The game is only free on PC. If your a PS+ on PS3 it is free then, otherwise you’ll have to buy it on all other platforms. Check out the gameplay trailer below!

YES! I was justing going to buy this for the 360! thank you for making this free 😀

    • would be cool if it went F2P on consoles aswell i already bought the game ps3 at launch (man was it buggy) still the more F2p games the better.

    • JK Monroe

Didn’t mention anything in the article about the console versions being free.

    • asgaro

Consoles and free… Sorry, but 95% of Free to play titles are on PC.
MS and Sony always want money for distributing games/patches/DLC, while the PC platform doesn’t have that disadvantage.

      • have you even played on a PS3?

        • asgaro

Yes, I have one myself since 2 years, a Slim. I do remember that there is a PS3 exclusive Free to Play, but still: it seems Sony and MS are reluctant to get more F2P titles on their system…
(And before anyone says i’m spoiled and rich because I have a gaming PC and a console: i’m not. My PC isn’t even top notch: graphics are set lower (Medium) and can run 64p BF3 matches at around 30-40 fps which isnt that smooth… And the PS3 I bought only when it got to 250 euros…)

          • ….ps3 already has i think 3 F2P games right now and 2 more coming (defiance and dust 514)

  • “Thanks Dieger for posting the tip on four Forums.” thanks four crediting me 😀

  • Sweet!

  • I bought this a while ago and I’m now having some problems with windows live for gaming saying I have to enter my product key and when I do it says it’s already been activated on another account. I’ve only had this problem since the free to play version came out, does this mean somehow that the entire payed game is now void and I have to install the F2P?
