God of War Ragnarok – Cory Barlog Shuts Down Theory of Who Blew the Horn; Will Be Answered One Day

god of war ragrnarok who blew the horn

Game Director of God of War’s 2018, Cory Barlog, has confirmed that an on-going new theory about who blew the horn in God of War 2018 to summon the giant serpent Jormungandr is wrong, though he offers hope, as the answer will one day be answered.

Spoiler warning for those who haven’t finished God of War Ragnarok.

With the release of God of War Ragnarok, fans were hoping that the game would answer some of the biggest questions that God of War 2018 introduced. While Ragnarok does an incredible job at addressing many of them, there is one that has fans talking and speculating all over the internet that still has yet to be answered. That question? Who blew the horn in God of War 2018 while Kratos, Atreus, and Mirmir were away?

Ragnarok seemingly ignores this mystery, though fans have speculated that the horn heard in God of War 2018 was that of the Gjallarhorn that Kratos blows right before the final battle in Ragnarok. The idea is that at that moment, the horn was not only heard in the nine realms but also managed to ripple across time, thus being the one heard in God of War 2018. It’s an interesting theory, though there are some issues with it, the big one being that there is nothing in Norse mythology to suggest the horn can traverse time. That and it sounded a bit different than the one we heard in 2018.

It could have been a cool, easy way to explain that mystery, but unfortunately, it’s completely wrong. This was confirmed by Cory Barlog himself over on Twitter.

But wait, didn’t Barlog sort of answer this back in 2018? Well, he did say it was someone following Kratos and Atreus since the start of their journey, suggesting that it was either Baldur, or Odin himself. However, he followed up on the Baldur part, saying that it was a “misdirection” and that the real answer is hidden in a clue somewhere in the game’s world. Whether he’s referring to GOW 2018 or Ragnarok, or both is anyone’s guess.

In the chance that this clue is never found by anyone, it does seem that Barlog is open to eventually answer this question.

Darn! I actually liked the idea that Kratos blew the horn himself! Oh, well I guess the mystery continues on. Who do you think blew the horn, if not Baldur, or future Kratos? Let us know your theory down in the comments.

Honestly the inpression I get was that Cory put that there for future use but hadn’t actually figured out what it was going to be, and then once Ragnarok came out they did not use it and now he is just answering vaguely and cryptically because he doesn’t actually have a real answer si ce he wasn’t fully in charge this time.

It’s Angrboda. Not only was she following their journey (even painting it) but she also has a close relationship with Jormungandr since she helped save it’s life (and the Giant soul that lives within). 🫳🎤
