Report: Revised Nintendo Switch on Its Way For 2019

Nintendo Switch update 9.0.0

According to a report by the Wall Street Journal, Japanese game developer and publisher Nintendo is looking to revamp it’s Nintendo Switch in the latter half of 2019. What this revamp could include new hardware specs and features, but those details have not been finalized.

The one notable feature WSJ does mention is that the Switch for 2019 could include a new liquid-crystal display.

One option is improving the display, they said. The current Switch uses a lower-end liquid-crystal display without some technologies that are standard in more recent smartphone LCDs. Updating the display with these technologies would make it brighter, thinner and more energy-efficient.

This hardware refresh falls in line with Shigeru Miyamoto’s comments in February where he wished for the Switch’s lifecycle to be longer than usual. If this updated Switch does launch in 2019, it could indicate that Nintendo is looking to upgrade the handheld console every few years to keep sales up and hardware-relevant for its entire lifecycle, however long they plan it to be.
