Good news PlayStation fans, as a God of War sequel is definitely in the pipeline and it’s due to drop at some point in 2021. The game will come out on the PS5 and it’s reportedly called God of War: Ragnarok.
Sony lifted the lid on the game in a teaser video last year, and it looks to feature the return of the gruffly-spoken Kratos and his mildly annoying son, Atreus. The fact that the game’s title features the word Ragnarok means that it looks like we’ll be taking a trip back into the ancient and mystical lands of Norse folklore.
Of course games about Norse mythology aren’t exactly thin on the ground at the moment. We’ve recently seen the Assassins Creed franchise taking an extended trip into Valhalla, and even some of the casino sites reviewed at captaingambling.com have slots with titles like Vikings Unleashed, Thunderstruck and so on. If Sony does manage to get the new God of War out in 2021, it’ll make it just three years since the last God of War game.
The previous God of War was awesome with plenty of cool fighting, stunning visuals and tricky puzzle challenges. It was a significant upgrade for the series that gave you a chance to endlessly upgrade weapons and the dialogue of the major and minor characters was a little more involving than you get with other games. However, that game did feel a little limited in that there wasn’t too much in the way of open-world adventures and fans will be hoping to see what other dimensions could be waiting for Kratos and Atreus to explore. So what can we expect from God of War: Ragnarok?
The good news is that it looks like the next God of War will also be available for the PS4 as well as the PS5. This would follow the template of other highly anticipated releases like the sequel to Horizon Zero Dawn that will feature on both formats
However, it’s worth noting that the release schedules of pretty much all games have gone haywire as a result of the current pandemic. Given that we’re nearly halfway through the year and there is little further news about the next God of War beyond the original trailer, we wouldn’t be surprised if things were pushed back to 2022.
A new role for Atreus?
Beyond this, Sony has been remarkably tight-lipped about the next God of War. However, it’s fair to say that it’ll follow on from the interesting events at the end of the 2018 God of War reboot. This saw Kratos finally disposing of his wife’s ashes off a mythical mountain while it was revealed that his wife was actually a giant.
All of this puts the spotlight on Kratos’ son – Atreus. After all, Atreus is now a half-god half-giant, and he’s even been given the new name of Loki. Remember that Loki was the trickster in Norse mythology which means that he could cause a few chaotic moments in God of War: Ragnarok.
While the relationship between Kratos and Atreus was strained at best in the last God of War game, the son was actually a pretty helpful addition to the fight scenes thanks to his archery skills. But with Atreus presumably growing up and well on his way to becoming a giant, then we should expect an expanded role for the son of Kratos in the new game. All of which could mean that God of War: Ragnarok features twice the amount of monster-crushing action.
