PlayStation Store Will Discontinue TV and Movie Purchases and Rentals Starting August 31

PlayStation Store

PlayStation owners who have been building a multimedia library besides games will have to prepare for some bad news in the next few months, as the PlayStation Blog has announced that the PlayStation Store will discontinue TV and Movie purchases and rentals — effectively ending those services starting August 31.

Here’s the full statement from PlayStation regarding the change and decision.

At SIE, we strive to provide the best entertainment experience for PlayStation fans, and that means evolving our offerings as customer needs change. We’ve seen tremendous growth from PlayStation fans using subscription-based and ad-based entertainment streaming services on our consoles. With this shift in customer behavior, we have decided to no longer offer movie and TV purchases and rentals through PlayStation Store as of August 31, 2021.

When this change takes effect, users can still access movie and TV content they have purchased through PlayStation Store for on-demand playback on their PS4, PS5 and mobile devices. We thank our fans for their continued support, and we look forward to further enhancing the entertainment experience on PlayStation.

As the competing world of streaming continues to grow and other platforms and avenues open, it looks like Sony and PlayStation have decided to fully concentrate mostly on video game related services. That’s all well and fine, as PlayStation is primarily all about the games and the multimedia services are exta — but there’s no denying this change will disappoint some and those who have embraced the TV and Movie services that were provided.

Speaking of PlayStation services, a report has surfaced that a PS5 storage upgrade feature is set to hit some time this summer.
