The Quarry Update 1.07 Sneaks Out This May 18

Supermassive has released The Quarry update 1.07, which is an unannounced title update for the game. Note that given the game’s scope, don’t expect any new content from this patch. Read up on what’s new in The Quarry May 18 patch notes.

The Quarry Update 1.07 Patch Notes | The Quarry May 18 Patch Notes:

Download Size: 7GB (Steam)

Unfortunately, Supermassive and publisher 2K has been quiet so far and haven’t acknowledged the patch.

On the PS4’s update history, here’s what’s noted down:

– Fixed various bugs.

Note that while that might be true, that’s what the developers usually put as placeholder text. The last patch released back in August last year also had that same line for the patch notes, even if it added harder QTE’s and whatnot.

We’re on the lookout on what got changed, and once we know more, we’ll update the article. You can read our review of The Quarry to see if you align with what we had to say about it.

Humble Bundle Has Raised Over $33 Million Dollars for Over 10K Charities in 2022

With the help of supporters from around the world, Humble Bundle has managed to raise over  $33 million dollars, with all of it going to people in need.

As revealed during today’s Humble Games 2023 Showcase, Humble Bundle’s VP of Social Impact, Kamini Tiwari, announced that Humble Bundle has raised over $33 million dollars, their highest earned record for a given year.

“A lot of people think Humble as a content store and game publisher. In fact, we’re a small company with a big mission, and that’s to be a force for good. What really drives us is that together with our community and partners, we’re able to turn our passion for games and other content into meaningful help for people and causes in need.

A recent example is our earthquake relief bundle — 100% of the $3.6 million dollars raised went directly to charities to help save lives in Turkey and Syria. In 2022 we raised a Humble record of $33 million dollars for charity. This total includes our stand with Ukraine bundle, which we’re honored to learn just won a Gold Halo award for engage for good.

Another big highlight from 2022 was the announcement that Adam Kareem, one of the first members of the Black game developers’ funds, had signed on with Humble Games. We’re about to kick off the fourth year of the BGDF (Black Game Developer Fund) and the program has now contributed to over 35 games from talented Black developers from around the world.

More than anything, I really just want to take this opportunity to say thank you. We are rapidly approaching our next major milestone — $250,000,000 raised for charity. And we wouldn’t be able to get there without our global communities and our content partners, all pitching in to make a difference in the world. Thank you.”

Fantastic news! Here’s wishing the team yet another amazing year!

Sony has also said that the controller can be used on flat surfaces, can orient in 360 degrees or secure the controller an AMPS mount or tripod. The analog stick’s distance from the controller can be adjusted as well.

Just like the DualSense Edge, the Access controller will have its own controller UI on the PS5. Users will then be able to personalize the controller in how they want to use it.

Button mapping & control profiles. On the PS5 console, players can select their preferred orientation for the Access controller, map different inputs to the various buttons, toggle buttons on or off, or even map two different inputs onto the same button. They can also create and store their favorite control profiles for different games or genres (such as “combat” or “driving”).

Controller pairing and analog stick adjustments. Up to two Access controllers and one DualSense (or DualSense Edge) wireless controller can be used together as a single virtual controller, allowing players to mix and match devices or play collaboratively with others. Similar to the DualSense Edge wireless controller, players can also fine-tune the starting position and sensitivity of input. The ability to adjust deadzones (the distance your analog stick moves before it’s recognized in a game) and stick sensitivity is particularly helpful for players to improve their fine motor control during gameplay.

Toggle mode. The Access controller also features a toggle mode, which allows players to adjust the behavior of any button to work like a caps lock key on a keyboard. For example, if you enable toggle mode for the acceleration input in a racing game, the Access controller will accelerate the car without you needing to hold the button down.

Check out the video showcasing the controller and how it can benefit gaming more accessible to everyone.

No price point revealed yet or when it will be released, though Sony states more details about it will be shared in the months ahead.

Guilty Gear Strive New Character Trailer Revealed for Asuka R# Alongside New Battle Stage and Color Packs

Guilty Gear Strive’s new character has been revealed! The newest and final playable DLC character of GGST’s Season Pass 2 is none other than That Man himself, Asuka R. Kreutz, or Asuka R#. Guilty Gear Strive’s Asuka will launch alongside a new battle stage called “Tír na nÓg.”

Guilty Gear Strive Asuke R# Trailer (English)

And the Japanese one, if you’re interested:

For those unfamiliar with Asuka R#, or That Man, he’s a major antagonist in the Guilty Gear universe who created the Gears. Here’s an official description of the character:

He stands at the pinnacle even among the company of generally highly capable magic wielders. He is both a scientist and also unparalleled in his mastery of magic – what one would call a genius.

Although he is generally polite and humble, he often finds even his carefully considered statements can result in discord.

In contrast to his intellectual capabilities, he severely lacks in stamina, with the slightest exercise tiring him out. Any physically straining tasks are handled by custom-made bits of his.

Asuka continues to transmit “clear numbers” from space, in the hopes of bringing peace to Earth.

A new battle stage in Tír na nÓg was also revealed. As a previously abandoned space colony, repairs are giving it a new lease on life.

The additional battle stage Tír na nÓg is home to a space colony created by humankind to survive in outer space. The previously abandoned and dilapidated colony has been repaired and found a new use.

From a giant telescope to a Japanese-style garden, this stage is populated by a variety of items reflecting the tastes of the current resident.

Finally, two new color packs have been announced. The first pack unlocks one additional color for each character for a total of 24 characters, whereas the second pack unlocks two colors for 24 characters. With the two combined, you’re getting a grand total of 72 colors, three for each character.

Asuka R#, Tír na nÓg, and the additional color packs will all launch on May 25. He will join Bridget, Bedman? and Sin Kiske as part of Season 2 pass DLC characters.

Inkbound Review – Choose Your Own Roguelike Adventure

Inkbound is a new turn-based roguelike from Shiny Shoe, makers of Monster Train, expanding on the mechanics of the hit deck building game. Turn-based at heart but throwing many perceptions of the genre out of the window and stomping on them, this whimsical tale into a world of books and stories under threat is an engrossing journey that fans of the genre will devour with gusto, one run at a time.

Turn the Page

Set within a world that is an acquired taste, you step into the shoes of a Needless, a being that will use the Atheneum Library books as portals to other worlds and strive to save them from the villains. The garish colors and fantastical characters, starting with the player avatar, are straight out of a universe that feels completely dreamlike and occasionally too eccentric, but it grows on you and becomes a wonderful experience with a wisely crafted setting that is seldom seen in videogames.

Thinking inside the book but out of the box is how the designers came up with the concept of turn-based battles for Inkbound. Your character has a mana pool – called Will – that serves both for movement and abilities – or Bindings –, but you can move freely in the arena until you delegate your actions. Reverting to your location before confirming any action returns the movement points to you, allowing for perfect spot judgment as you try to align a skillshot with various enemies.

Inkbound Review

You execute your actions in succession, ending your turn and giving room to the enemies to make their moves, one after the other. You can judge the damage output both from your attacks and your foes’, as every move is telegraphed, perfectly forecasting the outcome of the current turn, and encouraging you to carefully consider positioning, attack radius, and the toll they will take on your health bar. Forget to save a movement point for the end of turn and you may be greeted with a barrage of shots that could have been easily avoided. Power orbs frequently appear on the battlefield and can be true lifesavers as you struggle for additional movement points.

Inkbound is remarkable fun and brisk played solo, but it becomes even more engaging in cooperative mode for up to four players. The core gameplay system doesn’t change much, as you and your teammates simultaneously execute their actions, ending the turn to give the AI their shot. The class combinations and Binding variations are a great incentive to try all sorts of strategies and to marvel at some of the outcomes, such is the scope for teamplay.

A Smudge of Class

Inkbound Review

Inkbound comes with three starting classes and more to be unlocked via completing quests and defeating the striking villains, the bosses of this corrupted literature world. The creativity behind these Needless, as they are referred to by the mystical beings from the Atheneum Library and beyond, is nothing short of impressive.

These faceless creatures wildly vary in artistic design and base kit, showcasing terrific potential for experimentation and combination of the massive pool of Bindings and Vestiges, with results that can be extremely diverse after each run.

In a succinct description, here are the current classes: the Magma Miner is a hammer-wielding brute that deals additional damage; the Mosscloak is in tune with nature and akin to the stealth assassin template, also noticeable by the use of shuriken as weapon of choice; the Weaver is the most original of the bunch and my first favorite, an artisan Spider-Man of sorts with its use of magical threads to leash enemies and act as conduits for Bindings; the Obelisk is a tank carrying two massive stone shields that absorb damage, but also work as attack weapons; the Clairvoyant is a mage class with another ingenious twist, using a shardglobe to funnel her Bindings and create some devastating attacks.

Picking a class for the long run is a tough task, given the options and combos that we seem to discover with each new run. Take the Weaver as an example, as I reached a point where I had this incredible build with finely chosen Bindings and a largely unbeatable combination of Vestiges – relics that give you several buffs –, chaining impressive actions that barely gave the enemies room to breathe, let alone to take their turns.

No Rest for the Inked

Each run in Inkbound is comprised of straight choices that take you through a succession of events and battles, regularly placing you on branching paths. You start by selecting one of the three villains that you wish the face after completing the three books, each one set within a different biome.

With a look and feel inspired by the best top-down action RPGs and close to those “choose your own adventure” books, aesthetic included, the worlds are sadly entirely linear in their design, and this is the thing where the game could have aimed higher. The brilliant combat system is screaming for world building of the same level, one that would go beyond the basic – albeit beautiful – procedurally generated corridors and throw us into these fanciful lands prone for exploration and discovery, rewarding the most inquisitive and attentive players. Alas, there’s nothing of the sort.

Saying that you start from scratch after each run is an understatement. You don’t just restart with better knowledge on enemy types, events, and Bindings that you earn and upgrade at every turn; you unlock dozens of new Vestiges of different rarities that are true gamechangers, allowing you to experiment with builds that will take you one step closer to your goal. There are several quests to shoot for, increasing your season level and rewarding you with cosmetics aplenty. The hub is filled with quirky faces that act as quest givers, and functions as a place for seamless class changes and further character customization.

Inkbound should get plenty of additional content in the future, working as a live-service game with daily and seasonal quests alongside the standard missions, always with something motivating you to go for another run.

Nearly Ink-ridible

As with any intricate book, first impressions when entering the storybook tomes of Inkbound may not be immediately accessible or easy to absorb, but let all the dreamlike colors and mystical lore sink in, and it becomes a roguelike world you don’t want to leave so soon. Fun both in solo and cooperative play, Inkbound would be an even better game if the exploration stages were less constricting and offered us more room to explore, more places to discover on our own bidding; however, these worlds were penned for linear paths and feel very restrictive in their design.

There’s a certain addictive and wondrous factor in Inkbound that creeps in and may trigger your childhood imagination, enticing you to go for just another run, time after time. This is certainly related to the magical world, but also to the way you zoom across the maps, turn-based battles flowing in such an accessible way, inviting imaginative strategies and creative builds. Don’t turn the page on Inkbound – this is a book… I mean, a game that deserves to be savored for days on end.

Score: 8.5/10

Pros:

  • Whimsical and inventive world that grows on you
  • Creative turn-based battle system
  • Original classes that play very differently
  • Fun both in solo and cooperative modes
  • Comes with that rare addictive factor

Cons:

  • Biomes are disappointingly restrictive

Gangs of Sherwood Video Talks About the Reimagining of Robin Hood

Appeal Studios and Nacon have released a new Gangs of Sherwood video and this one talks about the reimagining of Robin Hood. In the five-minute video, Game Director Andrea Di Stefano and Art Director Michael Defroyennes talk about how they adapted the legend of Robin Hood.

The story in Gangs of Sherwood is a unique take on the Robin Hood legend. It is a war story in which the heroes are leaders of a resistance against the evil Sheriff of Nottingham. Technological advancement plays a major role in the world, which adds a science-fantasy dimension to the game’s medieval world. “The new technology was made possible by the Lionheart, a unique stone brought back from the Crusades, which can be used to transform metal and give it magical properties,” said Andrea Di Stefano. “This swift technological progress has led to a revolution in transportation and the way the war unfolds. In our case, it is having a big impact on combat, on the way the characters interact with enemies and the power they can unleash, which results in explosive and spectacular battles.”

During their adventure, players will explore a wide variety of stunning environments, some of which will certainly be familiar. As Michael Defroyennes explains, “For example, we start in the village of Locksley, which is under siege, and there will be other iconic places, of course, such as Sherwood Forest and the city of Nottingham. We also wanted to highlight the bleak aspect of the various regions to show how the world is war-torn and the how pollution from technology has impacted the environment.”

First revealed two months ago, Gangs of Sherwood features four of the most famous characters from Robin Hood: Friar Tuck, Little John, Maid Marian and, of course, Robin Hood. There are also lesser-known characters such as Alan-a-Dale in the game as well.

Gangs of Sherwood is due for release this fall 2023 on the PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.
