TT Isle of Man: Ride on the Edge 3 Review – Ride Like the Wind

The Isle of Man Tourist Trophy ranks as one of the most dangerous races in the world, being renowned both for its spectacle and its unfortunately tragic accidents. It’s also a racing simulation series providing nail-biting thrills at breakneck speeds, returning for another round with TT Isle of Man: Ride on the Edge 3. With a focus on realistic physics but aiming to deliver accessible gameplay to everyone, this is a confident and addictive experience that offers enough excitement to make you want hop on to this ride.

Full Throttle

This episode marks a change of hands for the franchise, from developer KT Racing to Raceward Studio of RiMS Racing fame. With a new developer on the handlebar, a lot of effort went into making this game a superior sequel, maintaining the obsessive attention to detail and reworking some aspects deserving of improvements. Evidently, for a game such as Ride on the Edge 3 to succeed in providing the greatest riding sensations, it must bring the best possible physics system.

TT Isle of Man: Ride on the Edge 3 Review

Ride on the Edge 3 includes two main categories, with 21 riders in the Superbike class and 17 in the Supersport class. Sidecars could be an interesting distraction and physics change from the standard motorcycles, but unfortunately don’t make an appearance. There are 32 different circuits to test your skills, with the impressive titular race being comprised of 60 km, a challenge that only the greatest players will reach after several rounds of qualification events and races.

Striking the perfect balance between realism and fun is a feat that may seem hard to achieve, but it’s not quite the holy grail. There are several racing games threading that fine line that pleases both amateurs and experts, and Ride on the Edge 3 manages to join the exclusive list thanks to a remarkable attention to every element of the bike. Leaning and stability are crucial aspects that deserved extra care and it is visible by tweaking some of the simulation features, instantly providing different outcomes that change the scope of the race.

Straightforward choices such as manual or semi-automatic transmission are surefire ways to change the skill requirements, with the former demanding constant awareness and nearly perfect timing with the shifts. Other options also significantly add to the challenge, such as tucking in and out, playing with aerodynamics and improving top speed in slight but important ways. Ride on the Edge 3 may not feature a host of options to tinker with every aspect of the simulation, but there are preferences that let you tailor the experience to your skill level. The variances in realistic simulation mode are notorious, making the motorcycle more sensitive and prone to plausibly react to every part of the terrain, with bumps and heart-stopping skids that feel like the real thing, often resulting in impressive high-sides, thankfully without the consequences for the pilot here.

TT Isle of Man: Ride on the Edge 3 Review

Technical talk aside, Ride on the Edge 3 is a thrilling journey through some amazingly twisted tracks with incredible scenery to admire, if you dare to look anywhere else but the road straight ahead. Don’t worry, you’ll have plenty of time to enjoy some relaxed sightseeing, but more on that later. The speeds you hit are tremendous, combined with the great feel for the bikes, heavy enough and hard to maneuver until you get the hang of it and start working those bends almost instinctively.

This is a physics system where misjudging the speed at which you approach a curb may jeopardize the whole race, the bike accurately reacting to different types of terrain, without compromising the fun and excitement of racing alone or against several rivals. With actual riders vouching for it, saying they use the series to train for the real event since the first game, there’s definitely something going for it in terms of realism.

There are a few distinct weather settings, which include clear skies, cloudy, overcast, and rainy. However, without being a simulation expert, it didn’t feel like the differences between clear and rainy races were consequential, with the potential for slippering not quite at the level I was expecting it to be.

The World in Your Handlebar

TT Isle of Man: Ride on the Edge 3 Review

The racing world, that is. You have 200 km of roads ahead of you, this time with an open world system that allows you to ride the Isle of Man freely, discovering many spots for fun, but also side activities that aren’t marked on the map by default. Simply by traveling around you can find face-off trials, where you challenge a single rider for a quick race, discovery landmarks that reveal more info and anecdotes about the island, and very useful fast travel points, among other things.

Completing qualification events, races, and other activities that put you to the test reward you with experience to increase your rider level, but also offer upgrade points to invest in your bike. Upgrading the various components raises your performance level, resulting in a more powerful and stable ride to fit with the more demanding challenges ahead. You can purchase parts in various areas, from tires to suspensions, engine, brakes, and more, in a simple but effective setup that will bring performance changes only noticeable by the best of the best. You can also tune areas such as tire pressure, transmission, and shock absorber specifics.

Ride on the Edge 3 is a beautiful game. The sprawling island has many sights that will make you want to slow down and bask on all the rural exquisiteness, the bikes are exceptionally modeled and get dirty – but there’s no cosmetic damage or components flying during crashes, surely something related to licensing – and the sense of speed is dazzling. The beautiful rain effects are jaw-dropping, with surface reflections, camera droplets, and the stream coming from the tires, all contributing to the delightful immersive visuals.

This feeling of being on the motorcycle at dizzying speeds is reinforced by the credible sound effects, with the muffled engine noise and constant exhaust pops sounding like the real deal. The differences between bikes aren’t too pronounced, but they’re noticeable if you have a keen ear for detail.

The soundtrack is comprised of various fully instrumental hard rock songs, and it’s difficult to tell one from the other when you’re racing, as they don’t really add anything to the experience; quite on the contrary, it’s best to turn them off to better appreciate the game’s sound effects and use them to fully understand the conditions and demands of the bike.

The various cameras offer you additional means of controlling your bike, with a few cockpit perspectives designed for those who want the greatest immersion and feelings. Only the most skilled will be able to use them for racing challenges, as the constant wobbling typical of a motorcycle is accurately recreated and very hard to manage for someone who isn’t a diehard fan.

A Ride to Remember

Ride on the Edge 3 is a superb motorcycle game that manages to be both fun and challenging, achieving a near-perfect equilibrium between simulation and arcade. The riding sensations are as good as they come, with a great feeling of speed and weight to the bikes, and a physics system that seems to work as gamers and enthusiasts would expect it to.

Above all, this is an enjoyable game that quickly becomes addictive as you try to shave off a few milliseconds out a difficult track section, or as you sneak on the inside of a curb and gain a valuable position right before the final stretch. It may lack sidecars, and tuning some aspects of the bike probably won’t result in a great deal of changes for anyone but the experts, but with its stunning open world and excitingly dangerous races, Ride on the Edge 3 is a challenge that anyone should try, fan of the competition or not.

Score: 8.5/10

Pros

  • Fantastic feelings with a great physics system
  • Fun for gamers and fulfilling for experts
  • Open world with activities and challenges to find
  • Visually beautiful and runs at a dizzying pace

Cons

  • No sidecars
  • Soundtrack is bland

This is a huge update, and we’ve posted not only the Saints Row May 9 patch notes, but also a condensed version of it too.

Saints Row Update 1.12 Patch Notes | Saints Row Update 1.012 Patch Notes | Saints Row May 9 Patch Notes:

Size: 10GB (PS5), 26GB (PS4)

Saints Row update overview:

  • The Heist & The Hazardous DLC for Expansion Pass holders is out now and available to buy separately
  • The free Sunshine Springs update is out now for all players and includes:

Complete Patch Notes:

Alongside the launch of The Heist and The Hazardous and the opening of our brand new district, Sunshine Springs, the team have also been hard at work bringing you a huge set of quality of life improvements, new features and bug fixes. This includes an overhaul of the combat, making it feel smoother and more badass than ever before, plus new features like Selfie Mode and an emote wheel allowing you to choose up to 8 emotes for quick deployment. Some missions have also been improved and we have added the options to disable or enable health bars at your leisure.

Plus, we have fixed a huge number of bugs, including achievement/trophy issues, stability and challenges. So get comfortable, there’s lots here to digest!

TL:DR: We improved a lot of stuff – some of it you need to play to really appreciate (especially combat changes) so get back to Santo Ileso now and let us know what you think!

QUALITY OF LIFE AND NEW FEATURES:

NEW DISTRICT – SUNSHINE SPRINGS

In our first map expansion we have officially added the brand new district of Sunshine Springs. A sprawling resort area, an oasis in the dry landscape of the Rojas Desert along Route 22 in the south-west of Santo Ileso. This district comes with new activities and stores to explore, and it’s all yours to conquer.

GENERAL COMBAT CHANGES:

Significant changes have been made to combat.  We heard a lot of feedback about the amount of damage needed to down enemies, and we agreed.  Combatant health has been dramatically reduced.  This change, combined with several aim and engagement improvements, increases the pace of combat and reduces the ammo starvation. We also made several changes to enemy dodges, since those would sometimes feel unfair.  The last major change is regarding the time players had to interrupt call-ins for reinforcements.  It was too short, so we adjusted them to be longer on all difficulty levels.  Numerous additional changes and bug fixes (detailed below) are included in this update.  Overall, combat feels much more satisfying and we can’t wait for everyone to get their hands on it.

  • Drastically reduced the hit point values of all enemies.
  • Reduced the frequency of enemy dodges in melee combat to near 0.
  • Reduced the frequency of enemies avoiding player kicks to 0.
  • Increased the amount of time it takes for enemies to call for reinforcements.
  • Enemies arriving to combat situations will now arrive in slightly different locations to more frequently avoid collisions.
  • Enemies will no longer wait to engage the player 1 at a time in combat.
  • Enemy hit chance is now temporarily reduced when the player crouches.
  • Changed the crossbow weapon to use hit scan logic instead of behaving like a projectile weapon.
  • Slightly improved the sounds indicating “low ammo.”
  • Improved impact reactions associated with weapons typically viewed as “heavy.”
  • Added a visual element to the reticle on the HUD to indicate when a player successfully hits an enemy.
  • Removed “stand in place and panic” order from Panteros enemies who are on fire. – This better aligns them with the logic of using fire in their attacks.
  • Buffed low-level explosive skills to be more useful and fun throughout the game.
  • Removed damage immunity on enemy combatants when dodging.
  • Added fire damage resistance to all Panteros.
  • Added better logic to enemies attempting to make a call in for reinforcements to better keep them in the view of the player – and thus able to be interrupted.  This should keep enemies from calling too often from cover.
  • Added logic to better clean up vehicles abandoned by fleeing pedestrians.
  • Weapon Signature Abilities will now automatically be applied when they are unlocked instead of requiring the player to go to Friendly Fire locations.
  • Reduced spread on player weapons and replaced it with more realistic recoil.  This should better reward skill in compensation with reducing recoil.
  • Updated Thump Gun charge time and reload times to be more in line with other weapons of the same tier.

HUD/UI COMBAT CHANGES:

  • Added visual elements to the HUD and the weapon wheel to indicate the current level of upgrade on a given weapon.
  • Added text below the weapon wheel to indicate the requirements to complete the equipped weapon challenge.
  • Added a full-screen tutorial to encourage players to utilize the upgrade system.
  • Added “Friendly Fire” weapon store functionality to the weapon stashes in the HQ and apartment.
  • Recaptured tutorial video for “Proximity Mines”
  • Re-enabled Depth of Field blur in fine aim.

@TCHA COMBAT CHANGES (NOTE, THESE WILL IMPROVE AREAS OUTSIDE OF @TCHA ADDITIONALLY):

  • Added avoidance logic to enemy vehicles arriving at @tcha combat encounters.
  • Added scaling deceleration to enemy vehicles arriving at @tcha combat encounters to keep vehicles from careening out of control.
  • Resized @tcha locations combat areas to keep arriving enemies closer to the player’s location.

**NEW** FEATURE:  EMOTE WHEEL:

  • Added customizable “wheel” to offer up to 8 emote choices on the fly.
  • Added “quick bind” feature to left and right d-pad (“c” and “v” on the keyboard) to quickly access any two emotes from the wheel.
  • Added emote interface to the player customization screens.
  • Added new ability to “steer” certain emotes while slowly moving (some can even be mixed with others!).
  • Added new “type” descriptions to each type of emote while customizing. This will help players better understand the abilities and limitations of each type.
  • Added 6 new emotes to try out with the new emote wheel.

**NEW** FEATURE:  SELFIE MODE:

A new “selfie” mode can be found within the camera app. Players can move the camera in a small 3d space, change the orientation, change and modify focal distances, toggle different facial expressions, and even pause mid emote! They can then hide all of the HUD elements to capture an image using the share feature of their respective platforms.

PLAYLIST FEATURE ENHANCEMENT:

  • Removed several unnecessary “Play” buttons throughout the interface.
  • Moved the “Custom Playlist” within the menu to be in a more convenient location.

  • Added visual progress indicator for each challenge’s progress via a purple bar behind the challenge name.
  • Cleaned up several minor inconsistencies regarding the scroll bar functionality and the menu option highlight formatting.

AUDIO:

  • Rebalanced several instances of player and npc voice over.
  • Tweaked ambient sound levels.
  • Bumped footstep foley levels.
  • Rebalanced default audio mix configurations and reset the default audio slider positions to reflect the changes.
  • Edged down the jump air rush sound effect.
  • Increased the voice line volume of the HQ Porta Potty collectible.

GENERAL:

  • Added extensive tech to automatically condense icons on the map when zooming out.  This should increase stability in later levels of progression as well as make the information easier to see.
  • Added hide player health ui option.
  • Added hide vehicle health ui option.
  • Reorganized and unified the pause and main menu to help players better find the options they are looking for.

Horizon Franchise Sales Now at 32.7 Million, Forbidden West Sold Through 8.4M Units; Aloy’s Adventure “Will Continue”

Chalk Guerrilla Games’ Horizon franchise as another heavy hitter in the PlayStation stable, as the studio has announced that the total Horizon franchise sales have now hit 32.7 million units, with Horizon Forbidden West contributing a sell through (meaning sold to consumers) of 8.4 million units.

The announcement was made in part of a look at Guerrilla’s 20th anniversary.

In addition to the franchise sales, Guerrilla also confirmed that Aloy’s adventure “will continue,” which doesn’t come as a surprise given the studio confirmed the new Horizon game’s existence in an announcement that studio director Angie Smets is moving from Guerrilla to PlayStation Studios.

In case you still haven’t played Forbidden West, go read our review here where we state,  Higher quality side quests, combined with a main campaign that feels grander in scope and is much better paced than the original, make for a strong story, and the beautiful environments, combined with highly detailed character models and improved gameplay, make this an early candidate for Game of the Year.”

As for what’s next for the franchise, leaked footage of the in-development multiplayer game has surfaced early this year. Not only that, but we also broke the story on how Sony is currently developing a Horizon remaster/remake.

You can read up on more of Guerrilla’s 20th anniversary musings right here.

Fortnite Update 1.0001.101 Pushed Out This May 9 (Update)

Fortnite update 1.0001.101 has been released by Epic Games on all platforms this May 9. Given we just got the big v24.30 patch last week, don’t expect anything big from this outside of fixes. Read on for what’s new in the official Fortnite update today patch notes.

Fortnite Update 1.0001.101 Patch Notes:

Update: Epic Games has announced what today’s patch did to the game:

Epic Games has not released the official patch notes just yet, but the studio has confirmed that a fix is incoming in an upcoming update (which we’re guessing is today’s patch) for the ODM Gear issue.

We’re aware of an issue where players swinging with ODM Gear may find themselves unable to enter build mode.

Swinging again or switching weapons should resolve this, and we’ll have a proper fix in a future update. Dropping the ODM Gear before swinging/switching may make the issue last the rest of the match.

If Epic releases the official patch notes, we’ll update the article accordingly.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor Has a Message for Speedrunners and Glitchers That Bypass Story Elements

Whenever a new game comes out, there will always be a few players who attempt to find ways to bypass the game’s story, either to complete the game quickly or for the simple thrill of it. This is no exception for Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, and developer Respawn seems to have accounted for this, as a newly discovered Jedi: Survivor message seems to have been implemented for such players.

Twitter user StellaNoxEclair posted a clip of Twitch streamer andersonjph, who managed to jump off a cliff and onto another area that would have been inaccessible at that point in the playthrough. Upon landing and taking down a Stormtrooper, an error message pops up on the screen, stating that the player had “bypassed certain story elements” and that continuing to play through the game this way would leave the game in a “broken state.”

Here’s the clip and message:

jedi: survivor message

The act of bypassing story elements in a video game, also known as sequence breaking, is usually avoided by placing invisible walls or obstacles that prevent the player from skipping to areas they’re not supposed to be in. It seems that instead of sticking to more traditional methods, respawn has instead added an error message that simply warns players, rather than outright preventing them from sequence breaking. As skipping through story elements can result in major ramifications later on, it’s generally not recommended to sequence break during your first playthrough, though the possibility of doing so may open doors for speedrunning the game by those interested in doing so.

What do you think about Respawn’s approach to sequence breaking? Let us know in the comments!

New Modern Warfare 2 & Warzone 2 Skin for Sale Looks to be Ripped Out of MW2019; Delivers More P2W Elements

Just last month, we reported on how Activision has started selling literal pay-to-win (P2W) items in Warzone 2’s DMZ mode. Apparently, that bundle did well enough that the company has rolled out a new Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2 bundle that once again gives paying players an advantage, though this one gives an added slap to the face to players as it seems the skin in the bundle being sold is a skin from Modern Warfare 2019!

The new bundle called “Thorns Out” (pictured above) is now available for 1800 COD Points (or roughly around $18 in real-world currency), and offers a UAV “Bonus Effect” that gives owners an unfair advantage in DMZ. While that in itself is quite egregious as it is, it’s made even worse by seeing that the bundled skin for operator Roze is the same one (give or take a color change or two) to its Modern Warfare 2019 counterpart.

Check out the comparison from MW2019’s Roze skin:

Important to note that items from Warzone 1 and Modern Warfare 2019 cannot be carried over to Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2, though Activision has refrained from explaining why.

Hopefully the next new skins we see are actually, y’know, new, and not just re-colored/reskins of old ones reintroduced as new items for players to purchase. I mean, the fact that we’re getting more P2W elements is bad enough, but selling old items as new?

What do you think? Are the skins different enough that it’s OK for Activision to sell it? Sound off in the comments below and let us know.

In other Call of Duty news, Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2 Season 3 Reloaded is set to launch this May 10! Read up on everything new in the mid-season refresh right here.

Thanks, CharlieIntel!
