Redfall: Phil Spencer Admits He’s Disappointed the Xbox Community, Says They Will “Revisit Process”

By now, it’s no secret that Arkane Studios’ Redfall has failed to live up to expectations. What makes this failure sting a little more for Xbox gamers is this is supposed to be one of the Xbox Series’ big console exclusives of the year, and it has failed to deliver.

This sentiment hasn’t gone over Xbox division boss Phil Spencer’s head. Speaking in the latest Kinda Funny Games videocast, Phil Spencer talks about Redfall and states how it’s difficult for him to disappoint the Xbox community, and how not only is he disappointed but that they “revisit” their process.

There’s nothing that’s more difficult for me than disappointing the Xbox Community. I’ve been a part of it for a long time I obviously work on Xbox head of the business I have a lot of friends get a lot of feedback and just to kind of watch the community lose confidence…be disappointed. I’m disappointed; I’m upset with myself I I kind of…making revisit our process, you know. I think back to the announcement of 60 frames-per-second, and then we weren’t shipping 60 frames-per-second that was kind of our punch in the chin — rightfully. A couple weeks ago and then seeing the game come out and the critical response was not what we wanted, and it’s it’s it’s disappointing

To date, Redfall is sitting at a 62 on Metacritic, and a “weak” rating on OpenCritic. Our own review gave it a 6/10 and states, “Redfall is far from being Arkane Studio’s finest hour; on the contrary, it’s a misfire that may tarnish the reputation of one of the most creative and exciting development outfits”

While the game releasing in the state it’s in now is very much less than ideal, let’s hope this is a learning lesson for not only Arkane but for the Xbox division as well. I mean, this is the first AAA game that’s made to be an Xbox console exclusive after Microsoft’s purchase of Arkane’s parent company Bethesda. Good news here is, Spencer does admit that whatever process they have in churning out games needs to be revisited. Let’s hope it’s enough so the next console exclusive that’s released (which is going to be Starfield later this year), will live up to the hype.

Redfall is out now on Xbox Series X|S and PC.

CONVERGENCE: A League of Legends Story Release Date Set for May 23 Alongside New Trailer

CONVERGENCE: A League of Legends Story’s release date has finally been revealed, with the 2D action platformer set to launch this May 23. A new story trailer for the game was also published, going over the overarching plot as well as revealing some familiar faces that you’ll meet throughout the story.

In the trailer, we learn that Ekko, the protagonist, is visited by his future self, who is trying to save the undercity of Zaun from a terrible fate. The trailer also showcases other notable characters from League of Legends, including Camille, Warwick, and Jinx.

Street Fighter 6 Sales Target Is at 10 Million Units According to Capcom

It looks like Capcom is expecting Street Fighter 6 sales to outperform its predecessor by a lot, as the company is targeting 10 million units sold for the upcoming fighting game.

Speaking to Famitsu, Capcom president Haruhiro Tsujimoto brings up other Capcom franchises as a benchmark for Street Fighter 6’s sales target. Here’s a translated version of the question and answer via DeepL:

Q: I am deeply impressed that Capcom, which established the fighting game genre, is once again making efforts to lower the barrier to entry and broaden the scope of this genre. On the other hand, wasn’t the effort and expense involved considerable?

A: For us, the “Street Fighter” series is our signature title, so we had no hesitation in making the investment. In recent years, the “Resident Evil” series has recorded sales of 10 million units, and the “Monster Hunter” series now has a title that is aiming for 20 million units. The “SFV” series has also sold over 7 million units, so I thought that if I could apply the rules of thumb from the digital side to this series, I could aim for 10 million units in my next title. If that was the case, we decided to do everything we couldn’t do before with “SF6,” and here we are today.

Our data analysis department is keeping a close eye on user trends, and we are also working hard to expand the scope of the e-sports genre, something we did not do enough of with “SFV”.

For reference, Tekken 7, another popular fighting game, reached its own 10 million sales milestone last December, with it having been released way back in 2015. Given that it took over 7 years to reach the 10 million mark, it seems Tsujimoto is confident in Street Fighter 6’s success. It’s also worth noting that Tsujimoto also factored in the digital sales when mentioning the 10 million figure.

Saints Row Next Update “Sunshine Springs” Due on May 9, Here Are the Patch Notes

While Volition revealed the roadmap for Saints Row this 2023 last month, it’s been quite a while since we got any actual updates for the game (November 2022. to be exact). Well, that’s about to change, as the Saints Row next update called “Sunshine Springs” is set for release this May 9, and what’s more, we have the patch notes for it.

DLC for Saints Row is incoming this month with “The Heist and The Hazardous,” and along with it, a title update housing free content for everyone. Grab a cold one, as this is one huge patch notes article.

Saints Row Next Update “Sunshine Springs” Patch Notes:

Alongside the launch of The Heist and The Hazardous and the opening of our brand new district, Sunshine Springs, the team have also been hard at work bringing you a huge set of quality of life improvements, new features and bug fixes. This includes an overhaul of the combat, making it feel smoother and more badass than ever before, plus new features like Selfie Mode and an emote wheel allowing you to choose up to 8 emotes for quick deployment. Some missions have also been improved and we have added the options to disable or enable health bars at your leisure.

Plus, we have fixed a huge number of bugs, including achievement/trophy issues, stability and challenges. So get comfortable, there’s lots here to digest!

TL:DR: We improved a lot of stuff – some of it you need to play to really appreciate (especially combat changes) so get back to Santo Ileso now and let us know what you think!

QUALITY OF LIFE AND NEW FEATURES:

NEW DISTRICT – SUNSHINE SPRINGS

In our first map expansion we have officially added the brand new district of Sunshine Springs. A sprawling resort area, an oasis in the dry landscape of the Rojas Desert along Route 22 in the south-west of Santo Ileso. This district comes with new activities and stores to explore, and it’s all yours to conquer.

GENERAL COMBAT CHANGES:

Significant changes have been made to combat.  We heard a lot of feedback about the amount of damage needed to down enemies, and we agreed.  Combatant health has been dramatically reduced.  This change, combined with several aim and engagement improvements, increases the pace of combat and reduces the ammo starvation. We also made several changes to enemy dodges, since those would sometimes feel unfair.  The last major change is regarding the time players had to interrupt call-ins for reinforcements.  It was too short, so we adjusted them to be longer on all difficulty levels.  Numerous additional changes and bug fixes (detailed below) are included in this update.  Overall, combat feels much more satisfying and we can’t wait for everyone to get their hands on it.

  • Drastically reduced the hit point values of all enemies.
  • Reduced the frequency of enemy dodges in melee combat to near 0.
  • Reduced the frequency of enemies avoiding player kicks to 0.
  • Increased the amount of time it takes for enemies to call for reinforcements.
  • Enemies arriving to combat situations will now arrive in slightly different locations to more frequently avoid collisions.
  • Enemies will no longer wait to engage the player 1 at a time in combat.
  • Enemy hit chance is now temporarily reduced when the player crouches.
  • Changed the crossbow weapon to use hit scan logic instead of behaving like a projectile weapon.
  • Slightly improved the sounds indicating “low ammo.”
  • Improved impact reactions associated with weapons typically viewed as “heavy.”
  • Added a visual element to the reticle on the HUD to indicate when a player successfully hits an enemy.
  • Removed “stand in place and panic” order from Panteros enemies who are on fire. – This better aligns them with the logic of using fire in their attacks.
  • Buffed low-level explosive skills to be more useful and fun throughout the game.
  • Removed damage immunity on enemy combatants when dodging.
  • Added fire damage resistance to all Panteros.
  • Added better logic to enemies attempting to make a call in for reinforcements to better keep them in the view of the player – and thus able to be interrupted.  This should keep enemies from calling too often from cover.
  • Added logic to better clean up vehicles abandoned by fleeing pedestrians.
  • Weapon Signature Abilities will now automatically be applied when they are unlocked instead of requiring the player to go to Friendly Fire locations.
  • Reduced spread on player weapons and replaced it with more realistic recoil.  This should better reward skill in compensation with reducing recoil.
  • Updated Thump Gun charge time and reload times to be more in line with other weapons of the same tier.

HUD/UI COMBAT CHANGES:

  • Added visual elements to the HUD and the weapon wheel to indicate the current level of upgrade on a given weapon.
  • Added text below the weapon wheel to indicate the requirements to complete the equipped weapon challenge.
  • Added a full-screen tutorial to encourage players to utilize the upgrade system.
  • Added “Friendly Fire” weapon store functionality to the weapon stashes in the HQ and apartment.
  • Recaptured tutorial video for “Proximity Mines”
  • Re-enabled Depth of Field blur in fine aim.

@TCHA COMBAT CHANGES (NOTE, THESE WILL IMPROVE AREAS OUTSIDE OF @TCHA ADDITIONALLY):

  • Added avoidance logic to enemy vehicles arriving at @tcha combat encounters.
  • Added scaling deceleration to enemy vehicles arriving at @tcha combat encounters to keep vehicles from careening out of control.
  • Resized @tcha locations combat areas to keep arriving enemies closer to the player’s location.

**NEW** FEATURE:  EMOTE WHEEL:

  • Added customizable “wheel” to offer up to 8 emote choices on the fly.
  • Added “quick bind” feature to left and right d-pad (“c” and “v” on the keyboard) to quickly access any two emotes from the wheel.
  • Added emote interface to the player customization screens.
  • Added new ability to “steer” certain emotes while slowly moving (some can even be mixed with others!).
  • Added new “type” descriptions to each type of emote while customizing. This will help players better understand the abilities and limitations of each type.
  • Added 6 new emotes to try out with the new emote wheel.

**NEW** FEATURE:  SELFIE MODE:

A new “selfie” mode can be found within the camera app. Players can move the camera in a small 3d space, change the orientation, change and modify focal distances, toggle different facial expressions, and even pause mid emote! They can then hide all of the HUD elements to capture an image using the share feature of their respective platforms.

PLAYLIST FEATURE ENHANCEMENT:

  • Removed several unnecessary “Play” buttons throughout the interface.
  • Moved the “Custom Playlist” within the menu to be in a more convenient location.
  • Added “Shuffle” buttons to radio stations within the playlist app, as well as the custom station.
  • Added functionality to the radio station selection wheel to quickly add a radio song to the custom playlist.
  • Added ability to move tracks within the custom playlist.
  • Added the “Custom” station to the radio wheel.
  • Fixed several small UI inconsistencies with visual formatting.

MISSIONS APP ENHANCEMENT:

  • Added an icon to Identify next mission in story.
  • Added an icon to identify DLC missions.
  • Added “Completed” tab to condense completed missions and challenges.
  • Reorganized mission order within the app to keep the story and dlc missions at the top.
  • Added description and xp/cash reward information to the mission highlight information.
  • Added several pieces of information to the challenge sub menu on item highlight. This includes: The name of the next perk to unlock, the number of challenges needed to unlock next perk, the icon of the next perk, and a short description of the next perk to unlock.
  • Added visual progress indicator for each challenge’s progress via a purple bar behind the challenge name.
  • Cleaned up several minor inconsistencies regarding the scroll bar functionality and the menu option highlight formatting.

AUDIO:

  • Rebalanced several instances of player and npc voice over.
  • Tweaked ambient sound levels.
  • Bumped footstep foley levels.
  • Rebalanced default audio mix configurations and reset the default audio slider positions to reflect the changes.
  • Edged down the jump air rush sound effect.
  • Increased the voice line volume of the HQ Porta Potty collectible.

GENERAL:

  • Added extensive tech to automatically condense icons on the map when zooming out.  This should increase stability in later levels of progression as well as make the information easier to see.
  • Added hide player health ui option.
  • Added hide vehicle health ui option.
  • Reorganized and unified the pause and main menu to help players better find the options they are looking for.
  • Added ability to custom nickname vehicles in the garage.
  • Added new “Overcast” and “Cloudy” states to the Weather System.
  • Fixed a few outstanding weather-related bugs.
  • Saints will now gather in small groups in completed districts, ready to help out the player.
  • Added new “distant” vehicle camera via “up” on the d-pad while driving (“z” on the keyboard).
  • Added DLC menu to help identify what content is available and what content is already owned.
  • Added UI indicators for all free and premium DLC content throughout the game (weapons, missions, customization items, etc).  All owned free DLC content will have a plain purple background in menus.  All owned premium DLC content will have a purple background and small fleur icon.
  • Altered several items of speech in “First F@#$ing Day,” “Morning Commute,” “Making Rent,” “The Great Train Robbery,” “Going Overboard,” “Severance Package.”

UPDATES TO FRIENDS MISSIONS:

 “SHOOTIN’ THE SHIT”:

  • Updated the shooting range objective to be more visible for the players.
  • Added objects for the co-op partner to shoot.
  • Adjusted the notoriety level at the end of the mission.
  • Removed the timer at the end of the mission and replaced it with a location objective.
  • Added additional method to complete final objective.
  • Minor adjustment to Eli’s lines to account for objective adjustments.

“THE FAST AND THE FOODIEST”:

  • Moved the starting location to prevent stacking dialogue.
  • Adjusted the complexity and difficulty of the shipment vehicle objective.

“ART APPRECIATION”:

  • Evened out the minor damage taken by the art objectives while towing them.
  • Added more generous success condition turning in objectives to the turn in region.
  • Moved the first objective closer to the turn-in location.
  • Changed the final segment to be a more dynamic, introducing police vehicles to avoid while attempting to return to the turn-in location.
  • Minor change to have the vehicle radio default to “on” for the segment.

Chrono Odyssey Gameplay Trailer Slashes Out Featuring Unreal Engine 5 Graphics

After years in the dark, a new trailer for Chrono Odyssey, South Korean developer Npixel’s second project, has finally been released. The Chrono Odyssey gameplay trailer features combat and exploration footage of the MMORPG with high-quality graphics powered by Unreal Engine 5.

Chrono Odyssey’s a fairly ambitious project as far as MMOs go, with an open world and real-time action for players to immerse themselves in. The game will also feature environments and weather conditions to even further enhance the variety and realism of the game’s world. The game’s soundtrack is composed by Cris Velasco, known for his work in other games and franchises such as Resident Evil, Fortnite, God of War, and Bloodborne.

In terms of combat, players will have access to six different classes: Swordsman, Paladin, Ranger, Sorcerer, Berserker, and Assassin, each with distinct playstyles. There will also be a space and time manipulation mechanic that players can wield during battles to “explore alternate timelines and solutions.”

While there is no release date in sight for Chrono Odyssey just yet, the game’s finally gotten a new trailer, so we may expect more info to come in the near future. Chrono Odyssey is set to launch on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam.

F1 23 Release Date Confirmed for June 16; Reveal Trailer Speeds Out

It’s official—F1 23 is set to launch this June 16. The Formula 1-themed racing simulator had its release date previously leaked by billbil-kun, and we’ve finally gotten confirmation on the F1 23 release date via a new reveal trailer.

The trailer reveals some gameplay footage of F1 23 as well as a glimpse at a couple of in-game cutscenes:

F1® 23 delivers a new chapter in the thrilling “Braking Point” story mode, dramatic wheel-to-wheel racing at new Las Vegas and Qatar circuits, fresh rewards to earn in F1® World, updated 2023 cars with the official F1® driver lineup, and more!

F1 23 will reintroduce Braking Point, the game’s story mode, and two new circuits in the Las Vegas Street Circuit in Nevada and the Losail International Circuit in Qatar will also be added to the game. There will also be improved vehicle handling for pad and wheel players as well as various community-requested features such as red flags, 35% race distance, and a new color encoding system. Finally, a new mode called F1 World will let players earn rewards through seasonal content and various game modes.

If you’re interested in trying the game out as early as possible, you can enjoy three days of early access as well as some exclusive content bonuses by pre-ordering the Champions Edition of F1 23, which features Max Verstappen on its cover art. Verstappen signed with EA as a brand ambassador earlier this year.

Battlefield 2042 Vault Weapons Getting All-Out Warfare Attachments in Season 5, Weapon Skins and Balance Addressed by DICE

Just a few days ago, DICE mentioned in its latest Battlefield podcast how Battlefield 2042 Vault Weapons will be getting universal skins and more. Today, DICE went into detail about that and more! The studio has confirmed that these new features are incoming in Season 5, which should be good news for those who want to use different armaments for online matches.

Battlefield 2042 Vault Weapons – Evolving in Season 5:

Vault Weapons meet Attachments

Staring in Season 5, BF2042 Vault Weapons will be able to use All-Out Warfare attachments. To start, DICE will be focusing no Assault Rifles and Sniper Rifles with attachments for the M16A3, A-91, M416, MTAR-21, AEK-971 and the GOL Sniper Magnum.

Here’s a look at two Vault Weapons with all the available associated attachments:

M16A3: MAUL Hybrid 1.5X, TV 2X, UH-1 Smart 1.5X, 8R Holo, SHAN 2.5X, Bravo 3X, M22, Covered Suppressor, Warhawk Compensator, Tactical Compensator, Arcom Tactical Muzzle Break, Champion Muzzle Break, 6KU Suppressor, Cobra Grip, BCG Light Grip, LWG grip, Rattlesnake Light Grip, STNR Laser Sight, T4 Thermal 3X, PB Heavy Suppressor, Type 4 Heavy Suppressor, Extended Magazine, LS-1 Laser Sight, Flashlight.

AEK-971: XDR Holo, K8 Holo, SHAN 2.5x, Bravo 3X, M22, Raven 4X, PSO-1M3, Ghost Hybrid 1.25X, Covered Suppressor, Warhawk Compensator, Tactical Compensator, Arcom Tactical Muzzle Brake, Champion Muzzle Brake, 6KU Suppressor, Cobra Grip, LS-1 Laser Sight, Flashlight, Extended Magazine.

DICE has noted that with the examples above, the devs have not included ammunition examples as much as there is for sights and barrels. The reason for this is because All-Out Warfare and its attachments were not developed with Vault Weapons in mind and will “require more work.”

Vault Weapon Skins

As for weapon skins for Vault Weapons, in Season 5, all Universal Skins such as Forest Multi-terrain (Unlocked at Rank 0) and Desert Technical (Unlocked at Rank 19) will be extended towards all Vault Weapons. Also of note, Universal Skins will also be available within Battlefield Portal.

Weapon Balance:

Here’s what DICE had to say about balancing when it comes to the Vault Weapon changes we can expect in Season 5:

We wish to acknowledge your feedback around the balancing of Vault Weapons and with these changes in mind it will now provide Vault Weapons with more versatility than ever before and allow them to consistently compete alongside and against All-Out Warfare weapons.

Attachments arriving to Vault Weapons is a substantial change that is an immediate benefit to help improve their performance and not necessarily in real power term and that is where you come in. Through your feedback we will continue to provide balance changes for both attachments and Vault Weapons as time goes on and once you’ve had time to go hands on with them.

No word yet on when Season 5 will kick off, but it should be soon, as we’re about to see the end of Season 4. Once we know more about that, we’ll let our readers know.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Prequel Comic Announced; Spider-Man Remastered to Be Available Standalone for $49.99

To celebrate Free Comic Book Day on May 6, Insomniac Games and Marvel will be releasing a Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 prequel comic, featuring Peter, Miles, and MJ teaming up against the Hood after the events of Marvel’s Spider-Man and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales. Additionally, Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered will be available as a $49.99 standalone purchase later this month, slashed down to a $10 upgrade for those who own the original game on PS4.

In anticipation of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’s release this fall, Insomniac and Marvel will be releasing a prequel comic on May 6. The story of the comic explores the growth of Peter, Miles, and MJ since the events of the original two games, as well as what their lives look like in the aftermath. Bringing in writer Christos Gage and artist Ig Guara, the comic unites the trio in a struggle against The Hood, whose supernatural abilities prove to be a challenge for both Spider-Men. The comic will be available through participating comic book stores in the US, or digitally through the Marvel website or the Marvel Unlimited app (worldwide release to follow later).

Previously only available as part of the Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales Ultimate Edition, Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered will be available as a $49.99 standalone purchase later this month on the PlayStation Store. Those who own any edition of Marvel’s Spider-Man on PS4 will be able to update to the Remastered version for $10, though disc edition owners will still have to pop the disc in even while playing the Remastered version.

It is pertinent to mention that those who own the disc edition of the original game will not be able to upgrade to the Remastered version for the discounted $10 price if they own a PS5 Digital Edition. Additionally, those who own any edition of the game through their PlayStation Plus subscription will not be eligible for the Remastered edition upgrade. The $20 Ultimate Edition upgrade through Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales is still available, however, so PlayStation Plus subscribers looking to play the Remastered version only need to shell out $20 to access it.

Xbox Games Showcase and Starfield Direct Taking Place Back-to-Back on June 11

Microsoft has now announced that the previously-announced Xbox Games Showcase, set to take place “this summer,” will now be taking place on the same day as Starfield Direct. The showcase, beginning at 1pm ET/10pm PT on June 11, will be immediately be followed by Bethesda’s Starfield event.

The Xbox Games Showcase will be the first physical Xbox summer event since its E3 2019 showcase. The new event was previously planned for a tentative Summer 2023 window, but now it will coincide with Bethesda’s Starfield Direct, conveniently giving Xbox gamers their first look at the biggest releases on the platform alongside extended Starfield gameplay and other information on the same day.

Fans will be able to tune into the event on YouTube, Twitch (ASL version here), and Facebook. The local times for the Xbox Games Showcase are as follows:

  • PT: June 11, 10am
  • ET: June 11, 1pm
  • BST: June 11, 6pm
  • CET: June 11, 7pm
  • JST: June 12, 4am
  • AEST: June 12, 5am

Starfield Direct will begin airing immediately after the conclusion of the showcase. The Xbox Games Showcase Extended will follow on June 13 at 1pm ET/10am PT, featuring detailed interviews focused on the showcase’s events as well as updates on Xbox’s first-party titles. The virtual and in-person FanFest events are also returning this year, with registrations open here.

Atomic Heart DLC #1 Teaser Shows Off New Locations; Game’s Asian Sales Broke $2M Within Two Hours of Release

Mundfish has released a teaser for the first Atomic Heart DLC, featuring new in-game locations that will be added to the game with the launch of the DLC. Additionally, the game’s Asian publisher 4Divinity (a subsidiary of GCL Asia) has announced that the game raked in over $2 million in Asia within just two hours of release.

Before the launch of the game, the developers promised four new post-launch DLCs that would “significantly expand the open world.” The first of these DLCs has now been teased two months after the game’s February 21 release, though a release date for the DLC has not been revealed yet.

While Atomic Heart was a successful venture for Focus Entertainment (who published the title in the West), it has also achieved equal success in Asia. The game broke past $2 million worth of sales just two hours after launch in 4Divinity’s Asian markets. These Asian markets account for 49.6% of the game’s sales worldwide as of April 2023.

Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons Announced, Coming to PC and Consoles This Summer

If you’ve been gaming for quite some time or just a fan of retro games, you’ll probably have heard of Double Dragon. Today, Modus Games and developer Secret Base have announced a new entry into the classic franchise with Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons.

Set to be released on consoles and PC this summer, check out the trailer for it below.

Series icons Billy and Jimmy Lee are joined by Marian, returning as a fully realized, firearm-wielding ranged fighter, and newcomer Uncle Matin, a riot-shield-wielding powerhouse. Tag in and out as the classic Lee duo or switch it up with different characters. With two-player local co-op, the action quadruples as you and a friend clean up the mean streets.

Redfall Review – All Fang and No Bite

Vampires and zombies are popular video game tropes, with the latter as a serious contender for the title of most recurrent supernatural enemy. For their latest open-world first-person-shooter, Redfall, Arkane Studios decided to bank on the mysterious bloodthirsty night beings as villains, pitting players against these creatures as they try to save the island from the looming threat. Played in solo or cooperative mode, Redfall is a work of ambition that fails to live up to the hype, as if sucked out of most elements that made other Arkane games resounding hits.

Vampire Busters

Since Dishonored – and cheekily excluding the amazing Arx Fatalis – Arkane has been known for delivering immersive and wondrous worlds, crafted with nearly unrivaled attention. Such ambitions often clashed with technical issues, but they pale in comparison to the richness that these sandbox creations had to offer. Redfall does hint at those successful attempts and may be engrossing at times, but this vampire tale doesn’t have the alluring aura that it needs to reach the heights of previous games.

Redfall Review

Redfall currently offers four playable characters of distinct looks and unique abilities. Going out as a team is the best way to enjoy what the game has to offer, but in case you want to play solo, the choice isn’t an easy one. I decided to go with Layla, as her telekinetic powers sounded like a fitting way to deal with the supernatural foes. There’s also Devinder, an inventor who finally managed to create weapons of actual use, Remi is a combat engineer with healing abilities and a useful robot, and finally Jacob, the ex-military with a spectral raven.

Your adventure appropriately starts when you clear a fire station of danger and set up a base with other fellow survivors. You can think of this building as your Ghostbusters hub, but instead of spectral entities, you will be assigned on missions that involve taking out vampires, along with the generic mercenaries and human cultists who roam the island and swear by the forces of darkness. So far, so predictable, but the framework for some barely exciting shooting antics is efficient.

Exploration and mechanics feel quite analogous to Dead Island 2, as you scavenge houses and cars for loot, use environmental hazards such as electricity boxes and batteries to your advantage, and return to your safe house for some upgrades and a quick breather before embarking on the next mission. It’s a template that owes nothing to originality, and greatly pushes Redfall into looter shooter territory, with all the caveats that come with this labelling.

High Stakes, Low AI

Redfall Review

Eliminating human foes is something that you can easily do with any of the weapons at your disposal, with a good old headshot being a surefire way to speed up the process. From pistols to shotguns and sniper rifles, among others of different tiers and levels, there’s a familiar selection that won’t sweep you off your feet. However, bullets will only slightly stun vampires, as they may recover their bearings unless taken out in the age-old way, which is by driving a stake through their heart. You need to have a compatible weapon equipped to do so, something that you will find early in the game as you stumble upon your first blood-sucking creature. You may also use a static UV light or the impressive Medusa weapon to stagger them, a mere punch crumbling the now immobile vampire to the ground. To kill them with fire is a third alternative.

Stabbing vampires and watching them turn into dust is a satisfactory feeling that unfortunately doesn’t find equivalent in their behavior. Constantly leaping sideways or teleporting around to disorientate you but otherwise lacking any other discernible tactics, they still manage to do a better job than their human counterparts, true braindead creatures that would struggle to get a secondary role as a zombie in Dead Island 2. And that’s one of the major pitfalls of Redfall, a game with average gunplay that is undermined by an enemy AI absolutely not up to scratch.

There are countless examples of this flaw that could make you wonder if Redfall didn’t require another year of development. From enemies who stand out in the open shooting at you, failing to react to your successive shots, to others that run in place, blocked by an unsuspecting but always treacherous park bench, it’s a feast of blunders. We also have cultists who only enter alert state when I already made a run for it and lined up a shotgun blast to their faces, which they never saw coming, despite the long seconds they stood facing in my direction. Some of them oddly ignore a loud shotgun blast not far away, as the brainwashed cultists they are. Or snipers who are as blind as a bat. This absence of any hint of intelligent life makes lining up enemies easier than shooting ducks at the carnival.

Occasionally, some enemy displays a minor attempt at a realistic response by going for cover, but this is a mere artifice – they leave a good part of their bodies exposed, and if you dare to move in the slightest, you can easily line up your shot, reload and repeat.

The incidents above could have been exceptions to the rule, but the truth is that these are frequent occurrences that permeate the whole experience. It’s disappointingly shallow and easy, a challenge that is boycotted by the utterly dumb foes that try to rule by numbers instead of intellect. While there’s potential for stealth, the broken AI doesn’t encourage a tactical approach, as a furious rampage is both faster and more effective.

The island serving as the stage for this vampiric tale is far from being the largest you have ever witnessed. In a few hours you will have visited the landmarks, discovered the best paths to move unnoticed, and as strange as it might seem, for once the fast travel system didn’t feel like an essential feature. You also bump your head in doors aplenty – the excitement of breaking into a house is real, but it’s done better in other games, specifically because Redfall has an excess of houses and buildings that are just for show. No matter the lockpicks or weapons at your disposal, a fake house will never be anything more than a front.

This illusion isn’t necessarily the critical issue here, as many other games choose a similar approach to their world building; the main regret is that the map isn’t that extensive or rich, and the number of buildings that end up being just for show can be off-puttingly big in comparison.

In terms of performance, your mileage may vary. Redfall can be a resource hog but doesn’t justify the need for powerful rigs. The island has some interesting scenic spots and topography that may provide some exciting escapes or tactical advances, but it’s far from being one of the best-looking open-world shooters of recent years, even feeling outdated in some regards.

Going out for main missions and side-quests may end up in somewhat derivative fetch quests or similar, but if you somehow manage to ignore all the glaring issues, Redfall can occasionally be fun, albeit never at the level that Arkane has accustomed us to. Switching between standard weaponry and vampire demolishers such as the stake dispenser Sawfish is interesting, and when you meet advanced vampires, the excitement and heartbeat ramps up a little. There’s a character skill tree to unlock upgrades, and the unique abilities for each character provide extra means to dish out justice, but both features are disappointingly meager.

For a game released at full price and from some of the minds behind a couple of true classics, it had to offer something more substantial. There are remnants of the studio’s legacy, and given more care and polish it could turn out to be a very enjoyable open-world shooter with an uncommon vampire theme. But it feels rushed, with an AI flirting with disaster, gunplay is on the bland side, the island is far from the richest place you have ever visited, and the missions reek of repetition.

Redfall is far from being Arkane Studio’s finest hour; on the contrary, it’s a misfire that may tarnish the reputation of one of the most creative and exciting development outfits. Not even the cooperative mode or the use of vampires are enough to lift the game from the claws of mediocrity, and at this rate you’d better forget the bloodsucking and conform yourself with the dominance of the flesh-eating – at least, zombies have recently starred with some flair in a somewhat similar but far better horror shooter.

Score: 6/10

Pros:

  • Some traces of Arkane Studios’ talent
  • Cooperative mode makes nearly every game better

Cons:

  • Enemy AI is disappointingly lacking
  • Open world isn’t that vast, rich, or exciting
  • Some performance issues for a game that isn’t graphically stunning
  • Gunplay is average at best

Guerrilla Games has pushed out Horizon Forbidden West update 1.023 on the PS5, and this once again brings fixes to the main quest, side missions and more. Read on for what’s new in the May 3 patch notes for the game.

Patch 1.23 for Horizon Forbidden West is now available! Thanks to all who submitted their issues via the Support Form while exploring the Burning Shores; the team has been working hard to get these fixes out. Take a look through the notes to see the changes (including some heavily requested), and make sure to update your game before jumping back in!​

KNOWN ISSUES

Our team is investigating the following issues:

  • Players reported that during Main Quest “For His Amusement” the objective “Investigate the Armory” cannot be advanced if they restart from save during the objective.
  • Players reported that during Main Quest “For His Amusement” Seyka may not open the door when scanning the datapoint “Access Control” after examining the three clues during “Investigate the Armory” objective.
  • Players have reported that during Side Quest “In His Wake” during objective “Kill the Guards”, enemies were stuck in the walls, making it impossible to progress through the objective.
  • For “Pangea Figurines” collectables, players reported they were not able to collect the “Green Raptor” if they left the parking garage after opening the trunk in which the collectable is located.

FIXES AND IMPROVEMENTS

Main Quests

  • Fixed an issue for Main Quest “To the Burning Shores” where restarting from save after the opening cinematic would despawn the machines players need to kill during the “Kill the Machines” objective, blocking progression.
  • Fixed an issue for Main Quest “To the Burning Shores” where the Bilegut could fall through geometry after a jumping attack, blocking progression during “Kill the Bilegut” objective.
  • Fixed an issue for Main Quest “To the Burning Shores” where under certain conditions the Bilegut corpse would not spawn, possibly causing players to miss out on a special outfit mod.
  • Fixed an issue for Main Quest “To the Burning Shores” where fast traveling during “Follow Seyka into the Tower” objective could lead to Seyka no longer leading the player upon returning to the quest area, blocking progression.
  • Fixed an issue for Main Quest “To the Burning Shores” regarding Aloy’s outfit and headdress during the opening cinematic.
  • Fixed an issue for Main Quest “Heaven and Earth” where fast traveling during “Create a Path to the Facility Entrance” objective could lead to a progression blocker.
  • Fixed an issue for Main Quest “Heaven and Earth” where Seyka could become idle during the crane and ballista puzzle.
  • Fixed an issue for Main Quest “The Stars in Their Eyes” where a Bilegut could be killed in a spot that would block a generator, making it impossible to override the control node, blocking progression.
  • Fixed an issue for Main Quest “For His Amusement” where restarting from save after pulling the lever during “Reset the Power” objective would lead to a progression blocker.
  • Fixed an issue for Main Quest “His Final Act” where backtracking after destroying the heat sink could block progression.
  • Fixed an issue for Main Quest “His Final Act” where progressing through the quest too quickly could cause an error in Seyka’s buddy behavior, blocking progression.
  • Fixed an issue for Main Quest “His Final Act” where players might get stuck when getting close to the Horus tentacles.
  • Fixed an issue for Main Quest “His Final Act” where players would fall out of the Horus interior.

Side Quests

  • Fixed an issue for Side Quest “In His Wake” where fast traveling during objective “Investigate the Skirmish Site” could lead to a progression blocker.
  • Fixed an issue for Side Quest “A Friend in the Dark” where players could reach the valve wheel by jumping onto rocks and walls, skipping part of the puzzle.

World Activities

  • Fixed an issue for “Aerial Capture: North” where players would not be able to go to the start of the flight path after examining the improvised transmitter, making the activity incompletable.
  • Fixed an issue for Cauldron “THETA” where players were able to skip a room by sliding through the door to the next room before it closes.
  • Fixed an issue for Cauldron “THETA” where players could skip interacting with the controllable drone by jumping on walls and other geometry to progress through the room.
  • Fixed an issue where the Stormbird would not show up in the storm cloud until players restarted from save or died. This left players unable to start “Aerial Capture: West” and unable to collect Delver’s Trinket collectable “Mighty Pint”, thereby blocking the Errand Quest “The Delver’s Trove”.
  • Fixed an issue for the Stormbird in the storm cloud where if players were killed and then left the area, upon returning and killing the Stormbird the electric discharge would not open the locked doors on the island. This left players unable to start “Aerial Capture: West” and unable to collect Delver’s Trinket collectable “Mighty Pint”, thereby blocking the Errand Quest “The Delver’s Trove”.
  • Fixed an issue for the Stormbird in the storm cloud where callouts and tracks were present during Main Quest “To the Burning Shores” although the Stormbird encounter is not active during this quest.
  • Fixed an issue for Delver’s Trinket collectable “Music Box” where the item’s description would not show up in the notebook. This issue blocked the Errand Quest “The Delver’s Trove”.
  • Fixed an issue for “Pangea Figurines” where players were able to enter the answers to the Dino Digits Quiz before collecting the figurines, making it incompletable later.

Datapoints

  • Fixed a translation issue for datapoint “IN FOR IT” guiding players “northwest” when it should be “northeast”, possibly causing issues finding “Pangea Figurines” collectable the “Green Raptor”. Without this collectable, players would not be able to complete the Dino Digits Quiz.

Machines

  • Fixed an issue where the Fireclaw would stay down indefinitely if knocked down.
  • Fixed an issue where the acid VFX of an acid attack of the Bilegut would persist indefinitely.
  • Fixed an issue where flying Sunwings were stuck in place.
  • Fixed an issue where the Horus AA Cannon would not deal damage to players.
  • Fixed an issue where Stingspawn would not engage with players.

Weapons

  • Fixed an issue where the focus scan could not be canceled by aiming a weapon.
  • Fixed an issue where applying “Draw Speed” Weapon Coils to Hunter Bows would slow down draw speed.

Skills

  • Fixed an issue where performing Grapple Strike on a Corruptor could lead to clipping and camera problems.
  • Fixed an issue where the Minefield Valor Sure would cause problems when activated on uneven terrain.

UI/UX

  • Fixed issues for roads on the in-game map.
  • Fixed an issue where the buddy icon and the quest marker would show up above Seyka at the same time.

Performance and Stability

  • Multiple crash/hang fixes.
  • Multiple loading screen fixes.
  • Optimization of art and game assets.

Other

  • Fixed an issue where players were not able to travel with flying mount between The Burning Shores and The Forbidden West at specific sections of the border.
  • Fixed multiple issues with fast traveling and the skiff.
  • Fixed multiple issues with on screen text and mistranslations.
  • Fixes and improvements to audio.
  • Fixes and improvements to visuals.

Aurogon Shanghai has rolled out Afterimage update 1.04 on consoles, and this brings a host of adjustments and and bug fixes to the game. This patch has been released a few days ago on PC for those wondering. You can read on below for the complete Afterimage May 3 patch notes.

Our first patch contains multiple adjustments, improvements, and fixes. And it’s now available to download. Please update the game to the latest version for the best possible experience. At a high level, this patch includes improvements to the fast travel system (now available at the beginning of the game), the map (locations are now automatically revealed after visiting them for the first time), and adjustments to the number of HP and MP potions you can carry.

Full patch notes are listed below:

Adjustments:
  • Adjusted the way the Map System updates – it will now update when players access it.
  • Adjusted the place of “Flower of Confluence”, it will now be gained in Resting Town. (Players that have progressed past this point will automatically receive it).
  • Adjusted the hitboxes of some enemies’ attacks.
  • Adjusted the hitbox of some enemies’ contact damage.
  • Adjusted some enemy distribution in some areas with foreground to improve visibility.
  • Adjusted the Shop of NPC Alice – deleted the item “Windwalker’s Anklet” and added the item “Resting Potion” in Alice’s Shop at a reduced price.
  • Adjusted the buy price of all HP and MP potions and added 1 to the max carry limit of each HP and MP potion.
  • Adjusted the requirements to obtain the item “Emblem of Windwalker”. Now players obtain this item at the beginning of the game.
  • Adjusted the acquirement of item “Windwalker’s Anklet”. Now players will obtain this item initially after picking up the item “Left-wing Feather of Windwalker”.
  • Adjusted the trigger area for the end of the double-jump and downkick tutorial after obtaining the item “Left-wing Feather of Windwalker”.
  • Adjusted the location of item “Scavenger” to allow earlier access to it.
  • Adjusted the level requirements of some talents in the Talent Tree. Players will now be able to learn the first and second weapon skill of all weapons at an earlier stage.
  • Adjusted the description of weapons “Phantom”, “Moonlight”, “Bleak Moon”, “Soulhunt” and “Prism Gale” and added combo instructions to their unique weapon skills.
  • Adjusted the display of the unique skill “Mining Chant” of weapon “The Survived”
  • Adjusted the casting requirement of the unique skill “Soul Ignite” of the weapon “Evil Jade”. Now it requires at least 20 MP to cast.
  • Adjusted the effect upon kill of skill “Midas Touch” of sub-weapon “Scroll of Pillage”.
  • Adjusted the passive effect value of the accessory “Shade”.
  • Adjusted certain parts of the map “Rubiwood Forest” and the map “Sky Palace”.
  • Adjusted some enemy distributions on the map “Resting Road”
  • Adjusted some improper enemy distributions as well as deleted some of the map “Emerald Falls”.
  • Adjusted the visuals of sailing on the map “Misty Waters”.
  • Adjusted the visuals of one secret area of the map “Field of Pyro”.
  • Adjusted the MAX HP of the enemy “Lushwolf” and “??? (masked swordswoman)”
  • Adjusted some skill hitboxes of enemy “Loss, the Galefeather”
  • Adjusted skill cooldowns for the enemy “Aqil, the Goliath of Pyro” to improve the combat experience.
  • Adjusted the trigger timing of one certain mechanism and altered it to be triggered during dialogue.
  • Adjusted the visuals of one certain mechanism.
  • Adjusted the visuals during the dialogue in one specific ending.
  • Adjusted the spacing in the level display of several languages.
  • Removed the level listed next to the map name.
  • Removed the hit-stagger time of some immobile enemies.
  • Removed two breakable one-way barriers in two maps.
  • Removed incorrect consumption effects of some food items.
Bug fixes:
  • Fixed an issue where after being hit by spikes or other mechanisms player will reset from invisible temporary savepoints too far. Added some invisible temporary savepoints during several platforming challenges. We will keep improving this in further updates
  • Improved enemy pathfinding.
  • Fixed an issue where the HP and MP do not decrease even with negative regeneration values once the player has full HP or MP.
  • Fixed an issue where successful parrying with the skill “Iron Bastion” still causes the player to receive contact damage.
  • Fixed an issue where using the right stick of a controller to scroll lines also moves the camera upwards or downwards.
  • Fixed an issue where the effect of the item “Mystic Coin” does not work properly if critical damage killed an enemy.
  • Fixed an issue where the effect and display of the item “Bless of Guardian” break the limit of HP bar.
  • Fixed an issue where enhancing the weapon “Prisma” decreases its attack and passive value.
  • Fixed an issue where the unique skill “Blinking Wyvern” of weapon “Celestial Remains” could cause the player to get stuck in walls.
  • Fixed an issue where the Magic Shield gained from the skill “Mystic Transformation” of sub-weapon “Scroll of Otherworld” did not properly remove the visual effect.
  • Fixed an issue where the accessory “Hollow Vessel” only worked with swords.
  • Fixed an issue where there are some Z-fightings on the map “Rubiwood Forest”.
  • Fixed an issue where some visuals of the map “Rubiwoord Forest”, “Silent Coast” and “Goliathfall” did not appear properly.
  • Fixed an issue where some platforms of the map “Resting Road” limit the jump height in platforming
  • Fix an issue where the hit time and water column mechanism displayed in the map “Silent Coast” did not line up properly
  • Fixed an issue where the collision of some moving platforms in the map “Albedo Tower” did not work properly.
  • Fixed an issue where the explode hitbox of the enemy “Explosive Meowling” did not work properly.
  • Fixed an issue where the blink skill of the enemy “Hideous Researcher” did not work properly.
  • Fixed an issue where the skills of the enemy “Failure” caused it to run into spikes.
  • Fixed an issue where the attack visuals of the enemy “Runic Guardian” remained after its death.
  • Fixed an issue where the Japanese dialogue scripts of NPC Alice were out of order.
  • Fixed an issue where the NPC Stanley’s dialogue at Emerald Falls did not work properly
  • Fixed an issue where sometimes the screen flashes to white and does not return to normal.
  • Fixed an issue where some fonts did not work properly.
  • Fixed an issue where some battle rooms had the wrong BGM.
  • Fixed an issue where the cutscenes will be automatically skipped after inserting a DualShock 5 controller

Although the patchnotes end here, but we will continue collecting your feedback to further improve the game. Furthermore, these issues are to be fixed in upcoming patches:

  • Add some special visual effects for enemies with a much stronger power level than Renee’s for players to recognize when they are under-levelled.
  • All NPCs’ locations will be immediately recorded on the map after players encounter them initially
  • Add more proper invisible temporary savepoints during platforming challenges
  • Extend the i-frame time after interactions, such as when the acquisition interface pops up after players pick up an object (in the current version, players aren’t attacked either while interacting)
