New Horizon Game Confirmed as Studio Director Leaves Guerrilla for PlayStation Studios

Guerrilla Games‘ Studio Director and Executive Producer Angie Smets has announced that she is moving to PlayStation Studios as Head of Development Strategy. Guerrilla has issued a farewell statement for Smets, in which a new Horizon game as well as an “exciting online project” have been both revealed to be in development.

Smets has spent the last two decades at Guerrilla Games, overseeing the development of Killzone as well as the Horizon IP. The developer celebrated her team and accomplishments at the studio as follows:

These past two decades at Guerrilla have been an absolute dream. I feel privileged to have worked alongside some of the smartest and coolest people in the industry. I’m so grateful for everything I’ve learned alongside all the other Guerrillas. We have accomplished so much as a team, and I’m incredibly proud of all the games we’ve shipped together.

A special shoutout to Jan-Bart van Beek and Michiel van der Leeuw. It feels like just yesterday that we were figuring out how to make and ship the first Killzone. Little did we know that we would eventually lead Guerrilla together. You’ve become like brothers to me, and there’s no way to thank you enough. I will miss you dearly.

Besides announcing her managerial replacements (Joel Eschler as Studio Director and Production Director, Hella Schmidt as Studio Director and General Manager, and Jan-Bart van Beek as Studio Director and Art Director), Guerrilla also revealed the existence of an upcoming Horizon Forbidden West sequel, as well as an “exciting online project:”

We have full confidence in our new leadership as they steer Guerrilla towards a bright future, expanding the world of Horizon with Aloy’s next adventure and our exciting online project. Michiel van der Leeuw (Technical Director) will be focusing on the future technology and strategy for the Decima engine.

We at MP1st broke the news of an upcoming Horizon Zero Dawn remake as well as a multiplayer game set in the Horizon universe back in October of last year. The online project was essentially confirmed later in December with Guerrilla posting job listings for the project (as well as other Horizon games), though it has not been confirmed to be the rumored NCSoft-developed MMORPG. Leaked concept art and developer footage from the multiplayer game can be checked out here for those who wish to see what Guerrilla is intending to accomplish with the project.

Apex Legends Next Season “Arsenal” Fires Out on May 9, New Legend “Ballistic” and What’s Incoming Revealed

Respawn Entertainment has announced the Apex Legends next season, and it’s called “Arsenal” and is out on May 9! Of course, it can’t be a new season of Apex Legends without a new legend, and we are getting “Ballistic” for Season 17!

Check out the trailer announcement for the new season where we also see Ballistic in the latest Stories From the Outlands:

In addition to the trailer, we also have info on Ballistic, as well as some of the key changes/additions in Arsenal.

NEW LEGEND: BALLISTIC

Real Name: August Montgomery Brinkman
Age: 63
Home World: Gaea
Class: Assault

Refined Gunslinger
August was the sole heir to the Brinkman fortune, built on shady backroom deals. But when those deals caught up with his parents, August was left a billionaire orphan. Wealthy, furious and self-destructive, August joined the Thunderdome Games (the pre-Apex Apex Games). Here, he took the name Ballistic and became a sensation! His style was wild, reckless, and utterly selfish, helping him become the very first Thunderdome celebrity.

He was famed for his iconic CAR (“Lady Grey”, for the tea). It was here, in combat, that August would meet the love of his life, Sok Leng. They would quickly marry and have a son, Nathaniel. Sok Leng and her brother Kit Siang were an inseparable duo of destruction, and with August now in their squad, they seemed unstoppable.

But nothing lasts forever. August’s crowd-pandering combat style meant he wasn’t paying attention to his team when they needed him, leading to Kit Siang’s death. Devastated by guilt, August retreated into himself, driving away his wife and son. For nearly 40 years, August lived as a recluse, keeping busy with small tasks to distract a lonely mind. And so August was largely forgotten, though not by everyone. His son, Nathaniel, was both enamored with his father’s victories and determined to surpass them. When his son qualified to join the dangerous Apex Games, August went to the Syndicate with an offer: take me instead.

His son would be safe from the path that ruined him. What better way to use those skills than in selfless service? And if it just so happens to be his favorite activity, killing all who stand against him…That’s quite the fortunate coincidence.

As for what’s coming to Apex Legends Seaso 17 “Arsenal,” go read the quick list below courtesy of EA:

Black Desert Online Update 2.75 Out for New Additions and Improvements This April 24

Pearl Abyss has released Black Desert Online update 2.75 today on all platforms for several new additions and improvements. Check out the Black Desert Online April 24 patch notes down below.

Black Desert Online Update 2.75 Patch Notes | Black Desert Online April 24 Patch Notes:

New Additions and Improvements

Warrior

For Warrior Succession, we’ve reduced the inconvenience of having to use Prime: Heavy Strike until the final hit, while also allowing other skills besides Prime: Heavy Strike to deal enough damage. Previously, the last hit of Prime: Heavy Strike did not activate smoothly and could not combo into other skills, making it somewhat difficult to use. To address this, we’ve improved it so that even if the skill continues until final hit, you can now combo into another skill and maintain the flow of combat.
Succession

Prime: Heavy Strike

  • Changed the skill as follows:
    • Changed so it can combo within the first 3 hits even while pressing ↓ key during the skill.
      • However, when the Prime: Pulverize skill is available, the skill will be activated automatically.
    • Changed so Critical Hit Rate is not applied only to the final hit when the skill is used during the cooldown.
    • Reduced Prime: Heavy Strike damage by 15% during cooldown.
    • Increased the activation speed of the last hit.
    • Improved to combo smoothly with the following skills after the last hit:
      • Counter, Scars of Dusk, Spinning Slash, Shield Strike, Prime: Pulverize, Ground Slash, Severing Thrust
    • Fixed the character’s momentary movement speed reduction after a hit.

  • Changed so that Flow: Overwhelm will no longer be activated by pressing ↑ + LMB when Solar Flare is on cooldown.
    • Accordingly, SPACE during frontal Head Chase will now activate Flow: Overwhelm.

Sorceress

Awakening

Dark Tendrils

  • Fixed the issue of being reverted back to your Awakening state when comboing into Night Crow while using Dark Tendrils via Quick Slot with your scythe.

Archer

To enhance the Archer class’s unique concept and appeal, greatbow and crossbow skills have seen an overall improvement with today’s update. The Archer has had some inconveniences, such as skills affected by terrain, a lack of ways to deal with approaching enemies, and low accumulated damage of combos in PvE. The focus of this update was to improve these areas. First, greatbow and crossbow skills were improved to emphasize their respective concepts. For greatbow skills, Spear of Sylvia and Ravenous Talon were changed to ranged attack skills to align with the ranged concept. In particular, Spear of Sylvia has been changed to not affected by terrain, and the firing speed of Light’s Path has increased to steadily deal damage without being affected by altitude. As for crossbow skills, the defensive effects were adjusted to respond to enemies nearby. Also, [Uproot], [Ultimate: Zephyr Leap], and [Gaping Darkness] were improved in terms of distance and utility to allow the Archer to distance himself from approaching enemies and his resume attacks. Accordingly, the effects of the skills were changed so that the Archer can now manage a variety of situations.
Main Weapon

Gaping Darkness

  • Changed the skill as follows:
  • Changed command input to ↑ + E.
  • Flow: Shadow Hack and Flow: Verdure Clout can now be comboed by holding down E accordingly.

Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising Online Beta Delayed Due to Stability Issues

Upcoming fighting game Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising’s online beta has been delayed from its original May 2023 date due to “stability issues” found during online play. Developer Cygames plans to announce a new schedule in the future alongside a closed and open beta phase for the title.

Here’s a text version of the statement:

Online Beta Schedule Change

We are sorry to announce that the Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising online beta has been delayed from its previously scheduled May release.

The game is currently experiencing stability issues during online play. While we realize that some bumpiness is to be expected during beta testing, we would still like to put our best foot forward and ensure we deliver as enjoyable an experience as possible.

We will announce a new date as soon as things have settled. To everyone who has been looking forward to the GBVSR experience, you have our sincerest apologies.

In order to test our recent implementation of rollback netcode, we will be launching a closed pre-access beta, followed shortly by an open beta. For those who would like to participate in the pre-access beta, registration will open when we announce the updated schedule. Thank you for your patience.

Creative Director
Tetsuya Fukuhara

While the statement didn’t give a concrete date for the new beta schedule, Cygames plans on releasing more information once “things have settled.” Registration for the closed pre-access beta will likely also be made available, so keep your eyes peeled.

Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising is the sequel to Granblue Fantasy: Versus. It is the fighting game spinoff of the popular mobile JRPG gacha game, Granblue Fantasy. Rising was announced earlier this January and will feature rollback netcode for online play.

Capcom has released Resident Evil 4 Update 1.05 across all platforms, which is a rather small download, and is likely related to bug fixes that’s plaguing the game on all platforms.

Resident Evil 4 Update 1.05 Patch Notes:

Size: 290 MB (PC), 491MB (PS5)

Update 3: Capcom has released the official patch notes.

[PlayStation®5 / PlayStation®4 / Xbox Series X|S / Steam]

  • An issue where certain key items become unobtainable, preventing the player from progressing through the main story, has been fixed. (Announced March 31, 2023)
  • An issue causing players to warp through walls when using the scope in certain areas has been fixed.

[PS5 / PS4]

  • Fixes to the stick dead zone (the range in which the controller’s sticks don’t respond to movement) made on April 7 have been further adjusted.
  • Changes to the graphics rendering process made on April 7 have been readjusted.

[PS5 / PS4 / XSX|S / Steam]

  • Other miscellaneous bug fixes.

Update: According to a number of reports from the community, this update has fixed small glitches related to speedrunning (door clipping) as well as the infinite RPG ammo glitch. Also of note, the d3d 25 error code may have been fixed for those experiencing it on PC. Chapter 14 skip also appears fixed. We’ll continue updating as more develops.

Update #2: On the PC side, several users have reported a number of mods now being broken. Whether the patch specifically aimed to do this or if it’s just a side effect remains to be seen.

As of right now, there are no official patch notes besides the PS4 history log, which lists “miscellaneous bug” fixes as the notes. The update is small, clocking in a little under 300MB on PC and other platforms, so don’t expect a crazy amount from it, though hopefully, it addresses some of the bugs introduced with the Mercenary update.

As always, we’ll be sure to monitor any activity from Capcom and will be sure to update this post once the full notes are out.

Update: The official patch notes from Capcom have been slotted in.

As of right now, Capcom has yet to release any official patch notes nor mention via Twitter any patch coming out. Seeing as Resident Evil 4 Mercenaries update did release did come out earlier this month, we can only assume there are a number of fixes related to the new mode in this update.

According to the PS4 history log, this update addresses “miscellaneous” bugs, though it is important to note that the PS4 history log generally never lists specifics.

As for some community reporting, according to some Steam reports, this update doesn’t appear to address shadow issues users had in the mode.

We’ll be sure to update this post once we have more official word from Capcom.

Update: We have added the complete patch notes straight from Capcom.

XDefiant Closed Beta Hits 1 Million Players, Flinch Being Tweaked, Search and Destroy Mode Incoming Post-Launch

It looks like Ubisoft has struck a chord with gamers with XDefiant’s closed beta, as the publisher has confirmed that it has passed over one million players!

This announcement was made over on Twitter, where Ubisoft thanked the players for reaching the milestone.

Bear in mind, this is a closed beta, and also only available for next-gen (PS5, Xbox Series X|S) platforms  and PC, though the final release will also be on PS4, Xbox One.

Speaking of the closed beta, if you’re playing the game and noticed that snipers don’t seem to flinch that much when hit, you’ll be glad to know that Ubisoft has confirmed that flinch isn’t balanced yet.

While we just saw the Hot Shot game mode go live in the beta (and then pulled), one fan-favorite mode for shooter fans is making its way into the game, and that’s Search and Destroy. This was confirmed by XDefiant Executive Producer Mark Rubin as something that’s coming post-launch.

XDefiant has no release date set just yet, but here are the confirmed list of content players can expect at launch. You can read up on what we thought of the first closed beta right here.

Report: Star Wars Jedi: Survivor Discs Indicate “Download Required” in Order to Play

Those looking to buy Star Wars Jedi: Survivor on physical disc so you don’t have to download huge chunks of data in order to play, we have some bad news for you.

It seems the disc versions of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor will still require players to download either the full game or something in order to run the game. This is according to the disc cover of the game that’s out in the wild right now.

No word yet on whether this means the full game needs to be downloaded or if it’s just an access key, but it does a require a download, which might be a bummer for some players.

Note that if the disc only houses the activation key and the key full game does need to be downloaded. this won’t be the first time that this has happened. Some game discs only have the activation key with the disc routing players to the digital storefront version of the game for a full game download (Modern Warfare 2 did this recently).

We’ll know more for sure once the game launches this April 28 on the PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.

Thanks, NightwingXII!

God of Rock Review – Rhythm Battles With Little Punch

God of Rock is the kind of genre hybrid engineered to turn heads, attempting a mix of gameplay systems that looks great on paper but sounds extremely hard to pull off. And hard it is, as it may be more enjoyable as a spectator sport than to play it. Drawing inspiration from both the fighting and rhythm game genres, Modus Games’ latest is a divisive feast of button mashing, special attacks, and optional gamepad throws.

Dance Fight Club

Down on their luck or simply aiming to achieve a personal goal, 12 entirely not random persons are contacted by a mysterious entity and invited to join the God of Rock cosmic musical fighting tournament of the stars – that drawn-out description is exactly how it is often introduced by the host and predictable end of game boss.

Most characters are original, but you can still find a few homages such as King, an obvious riff on Elvis Presley, or Champ, who may just be inspired by Freddie Mercury, if you squint a bit. Each one has a story mode starting with a stylish short prelude, and goes through various matches until they reach the God of Rock, a larger-than-life being worthy of the moniker. In true fighting game fashion, there’s a batch of special moves that are triggered through different combinations, and while most moves are shared between the cast, it’s worth finding out which ones are more suited to your playstyle, especially when going into online battles with skilled players.

God of Rock Review

There are eight locations and over forty original songs, but not everything is stardom material here. The arenas look nice, but they aren’t in any way related to the characters, being little more than a backdrop chosen at random. The same goes for the tracks, fully instrumental, some of them quite catchy, but lacking variety and without any attempt to display a bond with the characters. I also found the utter disregard for lip sync concerning, as the characters spurt their one-liners and move their mouths in completely disparate moments. At least, this taunt exchange is related to the two fighters getting ready to battle, but it loses its interest quickly.

A gamepad is recommended to play God of Rock, and while there are various difficulty settings, it’s not that much about note placement but more on the rival’s abilities, as the AI turns from mind-numbingly naïve to a ruthless riffing machine that drains your health in a couple of minutes if you struggle with a few notes. And struggle you will, because God of Rock may be filled with good intentions, but the execution is inconsistent.

The main issue here is that the horizontal depiction of the guitar arm on the bottom section of the screen isn’t very intuitive. As the notes scroll from the edge of the screen across four lines, the player must hit them at the right time, taking a chunk of the opponent’s health bar while simultaneously charging the gauges for various levels of special moves. You can even release a well-timed reversal to foil the adversary’s plans, if you are a true god of timing.

God of Rock Review

As most rhythm games players know, having the notes scrolling vertically is widely considered as the ideal design choice, the one that feels more intuitive and fun. God of Rock goes for a horizontal take and the size of the note chart is too small for comfort. The button configuration ends up being confusing as well, no matter how much you try to fiddle with the gamepad and keyboard options, forcing you to some extra mental strain as you memorize the button layout and completely fumble in the heat of the music battle. Occasionally, you are required to press two notes concurrently, a feat that may leave you befuddled and wondering how you can pull it off with such configuration.

Since most of the UI is usefully displayed on the bottom third of the screen, it’s a mystery why the all-important health meters were left on the top area. Sporadically peeking at health is essential as to know how well we are performing, but the mere act of averting the eyes from the crucial and unforgiving note chart for less than a second can turn into a disaster. Having these meters at the bottom near the rest of the critical information would have been the logical choice, but perhaps the will to keep the screen visually in sync with the fighting game staples led to this less-than-optimal resolution.

Eyes on the Rhythm

God of Rock Review

With arcade, local, and online gameplay including ranked, God of Rock has enough modes to get your pitch on, and it can be fun when you find the right mindset and go above and beyond to perform well. However, and for the reasons stated above, it is the odd game that is more entertaining to watch than to play.

The genre mix doesn’t really work, as the players won’t have any chance to watch the fighters doing their aggressive dances in the bigger area of the screen. The movements are flashy and fun to watch and it’s all visually engaging, but you can’t take your eyes out of the note chart for a second or your whole act will be crushed. With no replay option in sight, a choice between appreciating the choreographies or playing the game must be made.

Creating something innovative is a massive gamble, and God of Rock is trying to achieve something like that, but it sadly falls short. Some strange design decisions and a gameplay style that doesn’t really excel at any of the genres make this one an honorable but ultimately lacking effort – this isn’t quite the new challenger we were hoping for.

Score: 6/10

Pros:

  • Creative and fun character design
  • Accomplished visual style
  • Some interesting music tracks

Cons:

  • Horizontal note chart and health meter location make it hard to enjoy
  • No connection between characters, backgrounds, and music
  • Fighting aspect is little more than cosmetic filler

The Division 2 Next-Gen Versions “Unlikely,” as Taking “Full Advantage” Would Leave Last-Gen Behind

With Ubisoft confirming another year of support for The Division 2, some might be wondering whether this means we’ll also see native The Division 2 next-gen versions for the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Well, we have the answer to that and it’s not exactly good news.

Speaking to MP1st, The Division 2 Creative Director Yannick Banchereau explained the reasoning for the studio not pushing out a native next-gen version of their game:

MP1st: Will we ever see a native PS5, Xbox Series X|S version of The Division 2?

Banchereau: That’s unlikely because if we really wanted to take full advantage of those, since we only have one version of the game that is available on all platforms, taking full advantage of those would mean that the game would no longer be available on the old generations.

We still have a lot of players that play on all generations and we are not ready to leave them behind and ask them to upgrade. Right now we are trying to make sure every time we add something, it still runs smoothly on the old gen as well.

Important to note that while there is no native next-gen versions of The Division 2, the game did get a patch that implemented 60 frames-per-second at 4K resolution for the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles. It’s just that there are no additional graphical improvements or gameplay features specific to next-gen added.

Stay tuned to our full interview with Ubisoft regarding The Division 2 hitting the site soon. Don’t forget, the Resident Evil apparel event is coming back this April 25. You can also watch over 12 minutes of gameplay from us featuring the upcoming Descent game mode inbound for Year 5 Season 1!

Atomic Heart Sales Perform Above Expectations as Focus Entertainment Revenue Up 36% Year on Year

Atomic Heart has apparently improved above expectations, according to a recent revenue report by the game’s publisher, Focus Entertainment. The report claimed that thanks to Atomic Heart sales and other games released during the last fiscal year, the company had increased its total revenue by 36% year on year.

Focus Entertainment’s previous fiscal year, which ended last March 31, saw a total revenue of €194.1 million, which the report mentions as “at the higher end of the Group’s published range.” The 36% growth was attributed to the performance of six major titles that drove profits in 2022-23.

Four of these games have been released during the year and confirm the AA strategic positioning and the high-quality experience of Focus’ games, as well as the successful acquisition of Dotemu: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge, A Plague Tale: Requiem and Evil West (a co-owned IP with Flying Wild Hog). Lastly, developed by Mundfish and released during the last quarter of the fiscal year, Atomic Heart has performed above the group’s initial expectations.

While the report didn’t go into detail about Atomic Heart specifically, it did attribute much of its success to the games recently released under the company. And considering that Atomic Heart had over 5 million registered players within three weeks, it’s safe to assume that along with other titles released in 2022-2023, the game helped achieve record sales for the publisher.

XDefiant Closed Beta Extended for 48 Hours; “Hot Shot” Game Mode Footage and Info Released

Those having fun with XDefiant, you’ll be glad to know that Ubisoft has extended the XDefiant closed beta by 48 hours!

This announcement was made by Ubisoft over on Twitter, where the studio also showed off the “Hot Shot” game mode which was playable in the closed beta for a super short time before being pulled.

🎉 We’ve heard the requests and are extending the Closed Beta for an additional 48 hours! 🎉

The Closed Beta will now end on Tuesday, April 25th at 11 PM PT.

Be sure to get those extra matches in and lets us know your feedback!

Good question!

Our newest game mode, “Hot Shot”, has you collecting tokens from fallen opponents. Collect the most, and you become the “hot shot,” making you faster and deadlier than ever.

Be careful though, as you’ll have a target on your back revealing you on the map. 🎯

As mentioned above, the XDefiant closed beta will now end on April 25 at 11 pm PT/(April 26) 2 am ET/(April 26) 2 pm HKT. Progression has been fixed correctly, so get out there and rank up to unlock weapons, attachments and more.

As for Hot Shot, it looks like a modified version of Call of Duty fan-fave mode Kill Confirmed, which is a good addition in my book.

XDefiant does not have a release date just yet, but is confirmed to be shooting out for the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PC. For our impressions of the beta, head on over here.

New Destiny 2 Infinite Legendary Shards Exploit

A new Destiny 2 exploit has been discovered that lets players farm infinite Legendary Shards through dismantling last year’s Guardian Games class items, earning Gunsmith XP in the process to increase their Reputation Rank with Banshee-44 as well. Players are advised to take advantage of the exploit as soon as possible before Bungie inevitably patches it out.

Destiny 2 Infinite Legendary Shards Exploit/Glitch:

The only pre-requisite for the exploit is that players must have unlocked the Guardian Games 2022 class items in the Collections tab, as the exploit will not work with items from previous years of Guardian Games. To utilize the exploit, do the following:

  • Head into Collections > Armor > Events.
  • Purchase the Guardian Games 2022 class item for your class for 777 Glimmer. This is the Medal Mantle for Hunters, the Medal Bond for Warlocks, and the Mark of the Medal for Titans.
  • Navigate to the Character tab, and dismantle the corresponding Medal item. This will reward you with +6 Gunsmith Rank Progress, 4 Legendary Shards, 250 Glimmer, and occasionally the Finest Matterweave consumable as well.
  • Given that Master Rahool in the Tower sells 10,000 Glimmer for 10 Legendary Shards, players can repeat the process an unlimited number of times: craft nine Medal items, dismantle them, purchase Glimmer to purchase Medal items, and so on. You also earn Gunsmith XP to increase your Reputation Rank with Banshee-44 in the process.

You can watch the glitch in action below:

Keep in mind that Bungie will most likely patch the exploit out in the upcoming days, so make use of the exploit before it disappears. While you’re at it, check out the new Xur location and inventory and Trials of Osiris map and challenges for April 21 till April 28.
