Atomic Heart Pays Homage to BioShock With an Easter Egg

If you’ve seen any of footage from Atomic Heart, you might (or might not) have gotten some BioShock vibes from it. Regardless of what you felt, developer Mundfish knows that they took some inspiration from the 2007 game, and to pay homage to it, as the developers snuck in a BioShock Easter egg in Atomic Heart!

Note: The video below is near the end of the game and might be considered spoiler-ish for some.

As you can see, there are a number of nods to BioShock in that video, with the most obvious one being the elevator sequence in the first game that introduced us to the world of Rapture. Atomic Heart directly describes this location of looking like a “rapture” while also naming the location Neptune. That, too, most likely isn’t a coincidence either, as one of the location in BioShock is dubbed Neptune’s Bounty.

And of course there’s the lighthouse itself. Sure many games have lighthouses, but how many of them lead to an underwater city? Same as — yep, you guessed it — BioShock.

Even the music that plays is somewhat similar to that in Bioshock.

Regardless of how you may feel about Atomic Heart, this is without a doubt one of the coolest nods to BioShock. And who knows, given what’s been established in BioShock Infinite, could it be possible that Atomic Heart is in some ways yet another alternative reality? Probably not, but remember, there’s always a lighthouse, there’s always a man, there’s always a city.

Season 28: Rites of Sanctuary

diablo 3 season 28 rites of sanctuary

For Season 28, Rites of Sanctuary, we’re travelling deep into the mysterious ruins of the Festering Woods. Amid a mining expedition, citizens hailing from New Tristram stumbled across an ominous Altar carved from an archaic material bearing cryptic markings. Shaken to their core by the eldritch aroma of the monolith, they’ve enlisted the assistance of brave Nephalem willing to investigate this sinister discovery that was once left to time—the Altar of Rites.

Home to power thought to be extinct from Sanctuary, the Altar of Rites will bestow these mystic forces upon worthy Nephalem… after a sacrifice is offered. You can begin interacting with the Altar of Rites at Level one.

Upon arrival at the Altar of Rites, players will see 26 icons called Seals and three Legendary Potion Powers. Take a moment to familiarize yourself with the elements below.

Potion AB When you drink your health potion, all enemies within 25 yards deal 25% less damage.
Potion AC When you drink your health potion, gain a random shrine or pylon effect.
When you drink your health potion, gain a random shrine or the Dimensional Power pylon effect.
AD When a primal item drops, a second random primal item drops as well.

Developer’s Note: We wanted the seasonal theme to be powerful and rewarding, but Conduit pylon completely broke the game. So, we made some adjustments to keep the power level high, while having your character’s progression still matter. We have removed all pylons from the final potion power and replaced them with a 16-second Dimensional Power pylon. To compensate for the power decrease, we buffed several damage Seals elsewhere in the tree.

How Seals and Potions Work

As you can see, after unlocking the first Seal, the order in which you unlock additional Seals and obtain their powers is entirely up to you and which powers align with your character’s build the most. Once a Seal or Legendary Potion Power is unlocked, you’ll immediately receive that Seal or Potion’s power and will have the ability to unlock connected Seals or Potions once you have the required materials. All Seals and Potions can be unlocked by players and the powers apply to all your characters—these powers last for the entirety of Season 28.

diablo 3 season 28 rites of sanctuary seals potions

How to Unlock Seals and Potions

Unlocking Seals and Potions will be no easy feat, especially after multiple sacrifices—you’ll find yourself rummaging across Sanctuary slaying scores of demons hellbent on preventing you from acquiring the Altar of Rites’ full power.

Players must gather materials listed in the Altar of Rites menu and sacrifice them in order to gain a Seal or Potion’s power. In addition to receiving the power after unlocking, you’ll notice the generic text previously displayed has been swapped with a small story scrap about Sanctuary’s tumultuous past.

To unlock a Seal, the one preceding it must be unlocked first (this does not apply to Seals R, S, and T because of how they’re positioned within the Altar). For example, if you want to unlock Seal B or C, Seal A must already be unlocked. There is no limit to how many Seals or Potions can be unlocked within a given time period, if you have the required materials to sacrifice to the Altar. Regardless of the order in which you unlock Seals and Potions, the cost will increase as shown below.

Study the cost of each sacrifice and theorize where within Sanctuary you can find some of these rare materials.

diablo 3 season 28 rites of sanctuary wings of terror cosmetic

After you’ve conquered the armies of Hell and acquired the needed materials to unlock all 26 Seals and three Potions, you’ll receive a reward truly fitting of an unstoppable force—the Wings of Terror Cosmetic, Seal AD. We recommend you unlock all Seals and Potions within the Altar of Rites, not only to inspire terror within your foes, but also to piece together the fragments of Sanctuary’s past.

Primordial Ashes Feature:

diablo 3 season 28 rites of sanctuary primordial ashes

Acquiring Primal Items is no small task. That’s why we are adding a new Primordial Ashes feature with this patch to aid in your quest. At the Blacksmith, you can now salvage a Primal Item for 55 Primordial Ashes.

We have also added a Primal Item recipe to Kanai’s Cube, allowing you to upgrade any non-crafted legendary item to a Primal Item for 100 Primordial Ashes. Only one upgraded Primal Item may be worn at a time and upgraded Primal Items do not retain the properties of the Legendary Item that was used. New affixes are rolled for all upgraded Primal Items.

Bug Fixes:

  • Altar of Rites
    • The power description for Seal N has been updated for increased clarity.
    • Pets will no longer pick up and salvage other players’ common, magic, and rare items because of the power from Seal X.
    • Fixed an issue where Seal V caused more progress orbs to drop than intended.

Monk Skill Changes:

  • Combination Strike Passive Skill:
    • Each Spirit Generator you use increases the damage of your other Spirit Generators by 100% for 10 seconds.
  • Crippling Wave Skill:
    • Every third hit also dazes enemies within 11 yards, slowing their movement speed by 30% and attack speed by 20% for 10 seconds.
      • Concussion Rune: Enemies hit by Crippling Wave deal 20% less damage for 10 seconds.
      • Breaking Wave Rune: Enemies hit by Crippling Wave take 10% additional damage from all attacks for 10 seconds.
  • Deadly Reach Skill:
    • Foresight Rune: Every third hit also increases the damage of all your attacks by 15% for 10 seconds.
  • Way of the Hundred Fists:
    • Assimilation Rune: Each enemy hit with the third hit increases your damage by 5% for 10 seconds.

Item Changes:

Barbarian

  • Horde of the Ninety Savages (6-piece bonus):
    • Frenzy deals 2,000% increased damage per stack.

Demon Hunter

  • Chanon Bolter:
    • Your Spike Traps lure enemies to them and deal 150-200% increased damage. Enemies may be taunted once every 10 seconds.
  • The Demon’s Demise:
    • Each blast from Spike Trap will damage all enemies again after 1 second and deals 150-200% increased damage.
  • Natalya’s Slayer:
    • Increases Spike Trap Damage by 10 -15%.
  • Natalya’s Vengeance (2-piece bonus):
    • Hitting an enemy summons a Spike Trap if it is on your action bar. Each Spike Trap detonation restores 1 Discipline.
    • Spike Trap deals 100% increased damage to enemies affected by Caltrops. Spike Trap now instantly refreshes charges on use, no longer cost resources, and each detonation restores 2 Discipline.
  • Natalya’s Vengeance (4-piece bonus):
    • Laying a Spike Trap grants 60% damage reduction. The duration of this bonus is always equal to the number of already laid traps in seconds.
    • Spike Trap explosions will blast affected enemies towards the nearest set Caltrops. Laying a Spike Trap grants 75% damage reduction. The duration of this bonus is always equal to the number of already laid traps in seconds.
  • Natalya’s Vengeance (6-piece bonus):
    • Spike Traps deal 10,000% increased damage, and each consecutive blast from the detonation chain reaction will deal 10% more damage than the previous blast.
    • Spike Trap deals 10,000% increased damage, and each consecutive explosion from the detonated chain reaction will deal 25% more damage than the previous blast.

Developer’s Note: After listening to the community’s feedback about the Natalya’s changes, we wanted to move Natalya’s away from Gears of Dreadlands, giving it a unique identity. We hope Natalya’s playstyle gives players more control over the explosions they set off while navigating the battlefield.

  • Gears of Dreadlands:
    • Your primary skills deal 15,000% increased damage.
    • Your primary skills deal 27,500% increased damage.

Developer’s Note: We’ve taken away the Strafe ability from Natalya’s, but still want to support the players enjoying Strafe builds.

  • The Shadow’s Mantle (2-piece bonus):
    • While equipped with a melee weapon, the damage of your Bolas, Chakram, Fan of Knives, and Impale is increased by 6,000%.
    • The Shadow’s Mantle 2-piece bonus no longer benefits Spike Trap.
  • Trag’oul Coils:
    • Spike Traps gain the Scatter Rune, are deployed twice as fast, and deal 150-200% increased damage.
  • Unhallowed Essence (6-piece bonus):
    • Hatred generators, Vengeance attacks, and Multishot deal 1700% increased damage per point of discipline the Demon Hunter currently has.

Monk

  • Patterns of Justice (6-piece bonus):
    • Hitting with Tempest Rush while Sweeping Wind is active increases the size of Sweeping Wind as well and increases all damage dealt by 20,000.
  • Raiment of Thousand Storms (4-piece bonus):
    • Dashing Strike spends 25 Spirit but refunds a Charge when it does.

Necromancer

  • Masquerade of the Burning Carnival (6-piece bonus):
    • Bone Spear deals 9,000% increased damage. Simulacrums gain triple this bonus.

Witch Doctor

  • Spirit Barrage:
    • Manitou Rune: Summon a specter that hovers over you, unleashing spirit bolts at nearby enemies for 6,000% 14,000% weapon damage as Cold over 20 seconds.

Developer’s Note: Witch Doctors have S-tier solo builds, but their farming builds aren’t as easy to play as other classes. To help, we’ve buffed the Manitou Rune on Spirit Barrage. We hope to give players an improved speed farming build, while also buffing one of their best solo pushing builds in a significant way, producing faster boss kills.

Wizard

  • The Typhon’s Veil (6-piece-bonus):
    • Hydras deal 4,000% increased damage for each Hydra head alive.

Diablo 3 Season 28 Rites of Sanctuary rolls out February 24, 2023 at 8pm ET/5pm PT/1am GMT/9am HKT for PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.

Dead Island 2 Final Slayer “Bruno” Revealed With New Trailer

Ahead of the game’s April 21 launch, Dead Island 2‘s final Slayer Bruno has been revealed in a new trailer released by Dambuster Studios. Bruno is a charming blond thief (he prefers “hustler”) from Los Angeles who loves challenges and despises corruption. The trailer also shows off his gameplay and innate abilities.

Watch the Dead Island 2 Bruno trailer below:

Bruno’s abilities are “Backstab” and “Rapid Reprisal.” While the trailer does not explicitly mention the details of these abilities, Backstab’s icon shows Bruno plunging his knives into a zombie from behind, and a particularly lethal stab attack to a zombie’s skull shown off in the trailer suggests that Backstab is quite likely a critical stealth attack.

Meanwhile, Rapid Reprisal’s icon depicts Bruno dodging an enemy attack, which apparently has a time-dilation effect as seen in the trailer: after Bruno evades a zombie attack, time appears to have slowed, and Bruno then launches a projectile at a zombie horde that has the same effect. Later on in the trailer, Bruno throws an explosive at another zombie horde, and this again appears to have slowed down time. It is worth noting that this may be a cinematic effect limited to the trailer.

Dead Island 2 shoots out April 21, 2023, for PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One.

Xbox Games to Be Included in GeForce Now, Microsoft President Hopeful of Successful Sony Deal

A recent press briefing confirms a major deal between Microsoft and Nvidia as well as a wishful statement from Microsoft’s president, Brad Smith. The briefing, held in Brussels, revealed that Nvidia’s GeForce Now, the company’s cloud gaming service, is set to include Xbox games. This also includes Call of Duty, apparently, if or when the franchise is acquired by Microsoft.

This comes after another major announcement that Microsoft entered a 10-year agreement to bring Call of Duty to Nintendo. After revealing the Nvidia GeForce deal, Smith continued the briefing by pointing out the market share disparity between PlayStation and Xbox, with the former having an 80% share over the latter’s 20%.

Smith also revealed an envelope during the briefing, claiming that it contained the very deal that Microsoft hopes Sony to sign. He mentions that he feels more optimistic about the deal than the felt 24 hours prior thanks to the aforementioned Nvidia and Nintendo announcements, which gave him confidence.

As Microsoft continues to make major moves in the gaming industry, many await Sony’s response on the matter, as well as whether or not the company will finally work out a deal with the tech giant.

When Square Enix Members services are removed on February 21, 2023, this early unlock functionality will not be available anymore. Make sure to link your account before then if you wish to have the early unlock.

All players can also find this outfit by exploring Chapter 13 of the game. This will still be the case after February 21, 2023.

DIGITAL DELUXE EDITION

The Digital Deluxe edition will be delisted from the following digital stores on February 21, 2023: PlayStation Store, Xbox Store, Steam and Epic Games Store. This means it will not be purchasable anymore.
This has no impact on the Standard edition, which will remain available for purchase on those digital stores.

Players who already own the Digital Deluxe edition, or purchase it before February 21, 2023

You will still have access to their game: you’ll be able to download it from your library and play it as normal.

You must link your Square Enix account in the main menu of the game before February 21, 2023 to receive download links for the following two pieces of bonus content:

  • Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy: The Hits – Original Soundtrack
  • Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy: The Art of the Game – Mini Artbook

The following alternative ways of obtaining these two pieces of content will still be available after February 21, 2023:

  • On PlayStation consoles, players can also download this bonus content directly on their consoles, through their library.
  • On PC, the files for this bonus content are directly included with the downloaded game files.

COSMIC DELUXE EDITION (PHYSICAL)

This edition will still be available for purchase after February 21, 2023. Check with your local retailer for availability.

Players will still be able to redeem their bonus content on http://www.gotggame.com/redeem by using the Square Enix Members code found inside the physical game box. However, the bonus 25 Square Enix Members Reward Points will not be granted anymore from February 21, 2023.

As you can see, this seems to be the last title update released for the game. and it’s not surprising if so. This also puts a nail in the coffin for any sequel it seems.

New State of Play Announced for Thursday, Feb. 23; Here’s What to Expect

PlayStation’s State of Play show returns yet again, and sooner than you may think! The show is set to premiere this Thursday, February 23, at 1PM PT / 4PM ET / 10PM CET and will include various titles from the PlayStation line of games.

Notably, this State of Play will include PlayStation VR2 titles, which makes sense given the fact that the PSVR2 launches today the 22nd. It will also include an “in-depth look at Suicide Squad,” the upcoming co-op superhero-themed action game.

Here’s a sneak peek of what to expect:

State of Play returns with its first show of 2023! Get ready for new looks at some anticipated games from our third-party partners, as well as a first glimpse at five PlayStation VR2 games set to arrive later this year. Then, settle in for more than 15 minutes of all-new gameplay details and updates on Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, the next game from Rocksteady Studios.

It looks like this State of Play will have a little bit of everything, given the teased “first look” at PSVR2 games, so it’s definitely one to watch if you’re picking up the VR headset for yourself.

New Starship Troopers: Extermination Gameplay Trailer Shows Off Combat, Enemies & More

In anticipation of the game’s Early Access period set to begin later this year, Offworld Industries has released a new Starship Troopers: Extermination gameplay trailer showcasing its explosive combat and the infamous Arachnid (a.k.a “Bug”) enemies that have finally made their way from film to video games.

Watch the trailer below:

The game features cooperative gameplay with up to 12 players divided into squads of four, assembled out of Assault, Support, and Defense classes to take on the Bugs with a well-rounded assortment of abilities. The Bugs will actively attack players and can destroy structures and vehicles, driving players to fortify their defenses and make effective use of gameplay resources to have a fighting chance against the Arachnids’ invasion.

From the game’s Steam page:

Features

  • Cooperative Gameplay – 12 players can team up in squads of four to defend your base, complete objectives, gather resources, and try to kill every Bug in sight
  • Three Playable Classes – Choose from Assault, Support, and Defense classes to best suit your playstyle and support the rest of your squad.
  • Build Defenses – Construct walls, towers, ammo stations, and more using resources acquired from planetside refineries
  • Class Progression System – Unlock new weapons, equipment, and perks for each class to become an elite warfighter of the Deep Space Vanguard
  • 5 Unique Bug Types – At Early Access launch encounter Drone, Warrior, Gunner, Plasma Grenadier, and Tiger Elite enemy Bugs during planetside missions.
  • Escalating Infestation Levels – Increasing Bug threat levels during missions bring bigger and more dangerous enemies to the fight
  • Large-scale Battles – A massive map with five unique zones, and swarm-based combat with hundreds of enemy Bugs on screen delivers the sense of an overwhelming planetary war
  • Ground War – Retake bases and refineries, destroy hives, and complete a variety of side objectives to wrest control of the map away from the Bug menace
  • Ping System – Communication is key! The ‘Ping’ system gives players a quick and easy way to callout points of interest, objectives, incoming enemies, and more to teammates

Starship Troopers: Extermination will enter Early Access on Steam later in 2023, though a definite date for this has not yet been announced. Stay tuned here at MP1st for all news and announcements concerning the game and its development.

Microsoft and Sony Squaring Off Over Activision Deal in EU Regulatory Hearing

Tech giants Microsoft and Sony are currently arguing over the former’s proposed acquisition of Activision Blizzard in a high-stakes European Union (EU) regulatory hearing in Brussels, with numerous industry players, regulators, and lawyers in attendance. Microsoft’s delegation is led by Vice Chairman and President Brad Smith backed up by Xbox head Phil Spencer, while Sony gaming chief Jim Ryan and Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick are representing their companies, respectively.

Earlier today, Smith revealed that Microsoft has signed a 10-year binding legal contract with Nintendo to bring Activision Blizzard’s Call of Duty franchise to Nintendo consoles with full feature, content, and release date parity. Shortly before the hearing, Smith told reporters:

I think we’ll make clear that our acquisition of Activision Blizzard will bring more games to more people on more devices and platforms than ever before. We’re more than willing, given our strategy, to address the concerns that others have, whether it’s by contracts, like we did with Nintendo this morning, or whether it’s by regulatory undertakings, as we’ve consistently been open to addressing.

The closed-door hearing in Brussels will see Microsoft making its case for the acquisition to EU antitrust watchdogs at a time when the deal already faces stiff opposition in the US and the UK. Smith is leading an 18-strong delegation of senior Microsoft executives including Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer, who is publicly seen as the face of the acquisition. On the other end of the acquisition, Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick is also defending the deal as one of its foremost proponents alongside Microsoft.

Sony – the “loudest objector” to the acquisition – is represented by Sony Interactive Entertainment President and CEO Jim Ryan, who has been publicly at odds with Phil Spencer since last September. Representatives from critics Google and Nvidia, numerous industry players including Valve and Electronic Arts (EA), the European Games Developer Federation, and antitrust regulators from Germany, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Finland, France, Italy, Portugal, Spain and Sweden are all in attendance for what may well decide the future of the Microsoft-Activision deal.

Stay tuned here at MP1st for all news and announcements concerning Microsoft’s proposed acquisition of Activision Blizzard.

Atomic Heart Controller Configuration – What Each Button Does on the Controller

Atomic Heart is finally available to the public, and while no doubt many of you are already knee-deep in its utopian world, I’m sure you’ve had a bit of confusion as to what the controls actually are. We don’t blame you, as there is no official control configuration to be found in the game itself, leaving players guessing how to access certain things if they happen to forget. Lucky for you, we’ve prepped an Atomic Heart controller configuration guide, telling you exactly what every button does and how to access certain functions.

Atomic Heart Controller Configuration:

Button functions

  • L1 – This is how you use skills, or as the game calls them, Polymers.
  • L2 – Aiming down sights.
  • D-Pad Up – You have two skills you can slot. Use this to switch between them. Can be used while using L1.
  • D-Pad Right – This will switch to your next available weapon.
  • D-Pad Left – This will switch to the previously used weapon.
  • D-Pad Down – Use health items.
  • L-Stick – This is to move your character around.
  • L3 – We actually don’t know what this does, if anything at all.
  • Touchpad Press (PS4 and PS5) – Pressing this will bring up the inventory menu. If you press and hold it for a few seconds this will bring up the map.
  • R1 – There are a few functions on the R1.
    • Interact.
    • Press and holding R1 will allow you to pick up items in the environment. Releasing R1 will not drop the item until pressed again.
    • You can charge throw objects by pressing and holding R1 again while holding an object.
    • Double tapping R1 will scan the environment, and holding after double tapping will keep the scan view up.
  • R2 – Fire your gun and use your melee weapon.
  • Option – Brings up the game’s menu.
  • Cross – Jump.
  • Square – Reload your gun. Pressing and holding square will bring up the weapon wheel after a few seconds.
  • Circle – Dashing/dodging. Push the left directional stick in any direction while pressing circle to dodge.
  • Triangle – Shok attack.
  • R-Stick – Aiming.
  • R3 – Crouch.

I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if we missed a few things here, because again, Atomic Heart doesn’t provide you with any official control scheme. We’re still trying to figure out what L3 does.

We’ll continue to update this post as new information is provided, and if you know of something we missed, feel free to drop a comment and we’ll add it in! Hopefully Mundfish adds an official control scheme layout within the game in a future update.

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance 10th Anniversary Celebration Sees New Artwork

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance turned 10 years old on February 19, and to celebrate, PlatinumGames designers and other artists who worked on the game have released special artwork to celebrate the game’s 10th anniversary. Director Kenji Saito and composer Jamie Christopherson have also written celebratory messages thanking fans for their love, support, and memes in the decade since the game’s release.

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance director Kenji Saito issued the following statement for the game’s 10th anniversary:

Hi MGR:R and MGS fans! This is Kenji Saito, the director of METAL GEAR RISING: REVENGEANCE.

METAL GEAR RISING: REVENGEANCE is 10 years old this year. Wait for it… a DECADE has passed! Can you believe it?!
To celebrate this incredible milestone (albeit in a humble manner), we have decided to release some anniversary art to commemorate this special occasion! We are truly grateful to the artists who came up with these amazing creations!

In addition, we wish to extend our heartfelt gratitude to all our fans who have supported us and the game over the course of this decade! Thank You!

Ten years after the game’s release, my most recent memory of anything to do with the game is seeing Armstrong and Sam appear in so many memes globally! It feels unreal that MGR:R is still a topic of conversation a whole decade later. This recognition of the game has also led to an increase in player count over the years and we’re also seeing heaps of players continue to stream the game online to this day. This is truly moving stuff…

I still believe that METAL GEAR RISING: REVENGEANCE offers an experience like no other, even a decade after its launch!

METAL GEAR RISING: REVENGEANCE
Cutting and slicing never felt so good!
I look forward to creating many more memories with METAL GEAR RISING: REVEANGENCE in the years to come!

The game’s composer Jamie Christopherson also sent in a special celebratory message:

Hello, this is Jamie Christopherson, the composer for MGR:R.

10 years, Jack. I can’t believe it’s been 10 long years. Thank you so much to all of the old and new fans of the game and soundtrack for “METAL GEAR RISING: REVENGEANCE”. I am pleasantly surprised that the game and soundtrack have kept their relevance and continued to be admired and played by fans across the world. Personally, I have found great delight in seeing all of the fun memes, reaction videos and cover versions of the songs that we did for the game. To know that the music and game have brought so many people joy means a lot to me. Thank you for playing and listening, and I can’t wait to see/hear what you all come up with next!

PlatinumGames designers and artists who worked on the game drew new artwork featuring the game’s characters to celebrate the anniversary:

Tomoko Nishii (PlatinumGames):

metal gear rising max0r

”It’s been a while since I drew so many mechs. The designs for these are simply amazing!”

Kenichirou Yoshimura:

metal gear rising 10th anniversary

“It’s the 10th anniversary of the release of Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance today. It’s early, so I drew a celebratory illustration~! I had a lot of fun drawing Senator Armstrong.”

Kana Yamamoto (PlatinumGames):

metal gear rising 2

”I still love the Monsoon battle track after a decade. I blasted this at full volume while I drew the art!”

Akiteru Naka (PlatinumGames):

metal gear rising next gen update

”I refined the sketches that I drew when we were developing the game. I made Mistral appear both cute and sexy, and I drew heaps of Dwarf Gekkos since these are my favorite critters in the game.”

Jun Seung Jin (PlatinumGames):

metal gear rising anniversary

”10 Senators for 10 years! Happy Birthday!”

Ryoko Konami (PlatinumGames):

metal gear rising sequel

”All I can say is… I ♡ Raiden! La-li-lu-le-lo!”

Yuya Inoue (PlatinumGames):

new metal gear rising game

”I tried to express the ferocity that lies under Raiden’s dignified persona.”

Though Raiden’s voice actor Quinton Flynn did tease new announcements “in the coming weeks” when speaking about Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance’s 10th anniversary in January, it appears that may have been limited to the special artwork released today. Metal Gear fans now interested in picking the spinoff up can find it discounted by 75% on Steam until February 27 in celebration of the game’s 10th anniversary.

XDefiant Insider Session Hands-On Impressions and What Needs to Change

Announced way back in June 2021, XDefiant is Ubisoft’s upcoming free-to-player multiplayer shooter that isn’t a battle royale. Now, before any cringes or groans at the words “free-to-play,” you might want to read on further as what we’ve experienced so far shows that Ubisoft might on the right track on this one.

(Note: While hands-on impressions are fine, we weren’t allowed to share screenshots or gameplay footage from the playtest, hence why there’s none available in this article).

Mix It Up!

Helping with development duties of XDefiant is Mark Rubin as Executive Producer. Before this, Rubin served the same role in the Call of Duty franchise, and it shows. The game has the same arcade-y pace as Call of Duty’s multiplayer of old (unlike Modern Warfare 2019 and it’s sequel). However, the major difference here is, unlike in your traditional Call of Duty game, this one has “Factions,” which act like Black Ops 3’s Specialists. In the Insider Session, each Faction has two tactical abilities to choose from, and a passive trait to that Faction. There’s also an “Ultimate” ability that slowly charges during the match, and of course, doing well increases the charge rate.

XDefiant

The Tactical abilities range from giving your character a camouflage so you’ll appear invisible like the Predator, be able to ping enemies in the map, lay down a health station of sorts for the entire team and so on. Each Faction is very different from one another, which adds a layer of depth to the shooter.

Interestingly enough, these Factions are pulled from other Ubisoft franchise. There’s the Libertad group from the Far Cry franchise, the Echelon based on Splinter Cell, the DedSec from Watch Dogs, the Phantoms from the Ghost Recon series, and the Cleaners from The Division. I have to say. the fact that the characters are based from different existing properties add a layer of personality to them, as each tactical and passive from each Faction is connected to the series in some way. One example is the DedSec group being able to hack items in-game, the Echelon relying on camo and stealth and so on.

On Your Six

XDefiant’s gunplay feels solid even in a pre-alpha state. While I’d want more “oomph” for each bullet hit that registers, it’s a minor complaint and one I’m not that fussed about given we are playing a pre-alpha build. One thing I did notice is how grenades seem insignificant. It might be their blast radius or how the maps all have little corners that players can hide from it, but I don’t remember killing anyone using the grenades. Again, this is a minor quibble that’s easily adjusted even post-launch of the final game.

The abilities of each character do feel different enough that they warrant some experimentation to see which one fits your playstyle best. Based on my limited playtime, the most popular choice are the Libertads. with people abusing the health regen and health group heal to great effect — perhaps a little to great, if I might say.

Checking in the customization options for guns, this one easily takes cue from Modern Warfare’s Gunsmith. You have your standard sights, barrel, stock, etc. that can be mixed and matched with whatever’s available, with a maximum of five attachment choices per primary weapon. It feels very much like Call of Duty’s gun customization system, which is a good thing for the most part. At least in XDefiant, the stats  are a bit easier to understand, so you know what each attachment does when it’s slapped on.

As for the modes, there’s your standard Domination match, and the devs threw in Zone Control, Occupy and Escort to the mix. All in all, the modes should feel familiar to those who played any multiplayer shooter in the last decade.

Regarding the maps available in the Insider Session, it’s hard for me to give a solid impression on them. I did enjoy what I played on, and I do like that the maps are restricted to their lanes, versus having a ton of verticality and different entries into them. It helped keep the action focused on specific areas. I think it also helped with breathing room, as I knew certain spots were more safer than others, since no one could gain a height advantage and such. Mind, we don’t know with the other maps, but for the most part, it kept the action flowing.

What Needs to Change

Given the build available was in pre-alpha, we won’t focus too much on the connection issues (of which there was plenty), as well as other bugs. Instead, we’ll list and explain some of the things we feel needs to be changed.

No Killcams – This should be mandatory in most multiplayer shooter games, and something as fast-paced as XDefiant. There were instances in the beta that it felt like the enemy cheated or was already pre-aiming around a corner (and yes, we know when an Echo ability was used and if we’re tagged).

Better hit registration – It sometimes felt like the bullets didn’t land on the target even if it did. It wasn’t the worst, but it could feel a bit better overall.

Footsteps were LOUD – For some reason, footsteps in the game (especially your own) were very loud. I had to stop running at some points since I couldn’t hear if there were other players near me or if that was just my character’s footsteps.

Faction balancing needs to be checked – Based on what I’ve played, gamers gravitated to the Libertad given how overpowered the health buffs were. Given this is something that can be adjusted with more data and playtime, we’re not too concerned about it, but it’s worth a mention.

End of Round stuff was way too long – I get it. People want their accomplishments shown off. But the animation to show the Player of the Game was a tad too long to my liking, and you also have the team summary as well, which made the wait to hop onto the next match a little too long.

More variety in how weapons feel – The M4, ACR and even some of the LMGs felt a wee bit too similar in terms of handling. Hopefully, the final product makes us feel the difference even more.

Shows us our pings – I was hoping that we’d have proper ping meters in the scoreboard but alas! Hopefully it will be added at some point.

Add more servers and sort the connection issues – I know, I know! It’s a pre-alpha, but it still needs to be said: the game needs to sort out its server issues or it will be DOA when it launches. Make sure there are servers for people outside the US. Give people proper connections and where their skills are the ones dictating gunfights and they will be happy.

Something to Keep an Eye Out On

While I admittedly thought of XDefiant as another bland F2P shooter in a crowded genre, I was glad to be proven wrong. Save the connection issues that prevent me from playing, the fact that I couldn’t think of a lot of faults outside of gameplay balancing and whatnot, means that the core gameplay is sound.

We need more time with the game to see whether this will be Ubisoft’s next big shooter to rival Rainbow Six Siege, but after a short weekend with it, I’m now looking forward to the next playtest session, and how I want to know more about the changes coming to the shooter. Snagging a shooter fan’s attention after a short playtime and with little fanfare means it did the trick. We’re looking forward to XDefiant and shooter fans should too.

Played on PS5. You can check out the XDefiant website to know more about the shooter. XDefiant has no release date but is set to be released on the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PC.
