[Updated] BF3 Devs Tease a “Rewarding Week” Ahead, Reveal Most Popular Map and Weapon Balance Secrets

Developers over at Digital Illusions CE reveal the most played and most popular map in Battlefield 3, give some insight to weapon and vehicle balance and teases an interesting week for Battlefield 3 fans.

When asked which Battlefield 3 map has been most played so far, Senior Gameplay Designer, Alan Kertz, revealed, “Op Metro.” This doesn’t come as too much of a surprise given the controversy that surrounds this unique map. Unique, because it oddly doesn’t quite seem to fit what Battlefield 3 has become known for, given it’s extreme linearity and numerous choke points. For every player that despises it’s limited space of movement and the utter chaos that it can often encourage, other players will take any chance they can get to roam the underground halls, light machine gun in hand, racking up the kills.

Kertz was also recently asked about weapon balance and how the DICE team went about its construction. Kertz answered surprisingly, “with 1 gun. The game was built around the M16 as a base.” The M16 assault rifle seems to be quite popular among assault class aficionados given the all-round, work horse that it is. Kertz’s statement seems to explain this. “Vehicle balance generally starts with the speed and handling of the vehicle, and then builds in a rock paper scissors way,” he added.

Meanwhile, other members of DICE tease some upcoming surprises for Battlefield 3 fans. Daniel Matros, Global Community Manager, mentioned that there are some “good playtests going on in the Studio today,” while Senior Designer, Tim Kjell has “a ‘slight feeling’ next week will be a very, very… shall we say, rewarding, week?” Could he be referring to the recently announced Inside DICE feature? Or something completely different?

What do you think DICE has in store for Battlefield fans next week? Also, let us know what your favorite Battlefield 3 weapon is and whether you love or hate Operation Metro and why in the comments below!

Update: According to Kertz, map popularity is measured by “rounds completed per player. So 64 ppl would mean 64 points. Next is Caspian, Firestorm and Kharg.”

Op Metro’s popularity goes hand in hand with USAS/Frag rounds.

All you people do is CRY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
      Go AWAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
      COD needs the support!!!!!!!!!!!
…and now that the patch is out it’s all “Boo Woo, I hate the DAO” or “Oh no, not again, with the Saiga” I’ve been slaughtered by these 2 guns and I could care less. Of course I could’ve created my own balance and just brought the gun out and went toe to toe but I like the challenge and I CAN TAKE LOSING!!!!

You people are the reason why there were 18 pages of Fixes… Cry a lil harder and they might just suck you’re $%#*!!!

Just  in case you’re wondering, I use all weapons… If one doesn’t work another will.
I only brought out the USAS when I got shot 3 times in a row.

THIS MESSAGE IS NOT FOR PEOPLE WHO REALLY LOVE THIS GAME, JUST THE BABIES/COD LOVERS!

Metro is great even without USAS frag ammo. I can’t wait until those players that are so reliant on its noobiness have to adjust. As a frag round hater, I’ve stuck to AR’s, carbines and LMG’s.

    • Anonymous

I only use LMGs, they are awesome. Find a good point to mount the bipod and you can throw havoc at the enemy easy. :)

      • Phatl2028

lay n spray trash, there’s certain choke points where people just filter right to you. people have a problem with run n gun I hate campers who hide under tires or inside busses trash babies and such . the list can go on some control points it’s a strategy to be at but then there’s pure campers and glitchers. some players wait to spray as somebody comes to them and some of us can adapt and play against any style no matter what on any match type. thats what seperates BF from COD the depth of game, yes it’s sad that BF has taken on some COD play styles but it still offers a more versatile experiance than anything currently on the market.

        • Sunward

I completely agree. I am sick to death of campers and even more than that, Claymores. My favorite map is Noshahr Canals on Team Deathmatch. Pure close combat material, especially on hardcore. Just running around (rushing as it is commonly refered to) with an assault rifle or my new favorite, the SKS.
If you love close quarter combat then play this map on TDM. And prepare for the DLC.

    • K2476

      I hate frag fags too!!!!

Lol Op Metro is most played?

    More proof that BF3 = COD knock-off.

    • Stfu

R u serious? Have u ever even played the game? They r not even close and if your gonna use this one map to make this retarded statement then you just make yourself seem like a troll. If u must have an opinion at least try and make it sound smart and thought out.

      • Arendsb

This must be your first battlefield game. Welcome to the series. How was the transition?

        • JayD

Your comment is ridiculous being that the games are not even close to being the same.  Go back to COD and run around like an idiot spraying your rounds all over.

          • Arendsb

Lol. They used OP metro in the Beta because it was not a typical BF map, meaning, they were using it lure new players. They stated their goal was to take over the FPS segment from COD, and OP Metro is the key map and example.

Dice admitted it, I’m not trolling. If anything I’m getting trolled by you guy. EA and Dice repeatedly has said that.

All that is not what bf series is about.
You love op metro? Lol- just goes to show you’re new to bf. How was that transition from CoD- FAMAS much?

        • Stfu

Haha. R u just saying random shit now for no apparent reason? Not too different from your first comment I guess.interact versatile skills go perfect with the Cod community

          • Arendsb

            Random shit?

A majority of posters here state that op metro is just run’n gun.

That’s what cod is about. Op metro has a distinct “maze” and “close combat quarters” feel to it.

The article above describes it as pure chaos- saying people even avoid it by roaming other parts of the map.

It’s not like any previous bf3 maps, and is the keystone map they use to draw in cod players (beta). They state they want to be #1, which means u have to do what the number 1 does, only better. Ie, if the #1 is cod (god knows why its shitty as hell), then to beat cod, it has to be like cod.

        • Devious95

the fuck do you even care where he comes from ? people have different tastes, so people will like different maps.DEAL WITH IT. honestly I hate metro but you just sound like the typical elitist asshole that ruins the integrity of this community

The new cod in what way? Because they don’t play the same at all.

          • Kevfed211

Yep COD Is Waiting in the waters compared to BF3. I used to get bored with FPS online after a mouth or 2. BATTLEFIELD 3 is lIke crack. 3 mouths now and I’m starting to really get in to this dam game like a junky! Dice your game is like virtual combat reinvented this game changed me from wanting single player games to online HOORAA! Now cod was good but they drop the ball by fans by thinking it would stay the same old. No it’s to late COD has waited to long Now there talking frostbite 2 game with 3 other developers already confreming using it

          • Phatl2028

before XBOX was created you had to play FPS online with a PC and ye s BF was out first , too bad COD is still on it’s ID3 engine from it’s start. BF is on it’s third engine which i a reason most BF always take a good 6-8 months of play from its community to work out it’s bugs. any BF vet will agree.

          • The_Real_CS

Haha, you sound like you smoke just as much as me… BF3 plays like COD?! LMAO

Battlefield got better with age… COD stayed EXACTLY THE SAME… hense the 50% market drop off in sales around Christmas.

      Ha Ha Ha… Troll.

    • http://www.nickartwork.com/ Loner

      Hey, here’s a shocker:
CoD actually used to be a FUN and RESPECTED game.

I haven’t played any CoD games after MW1, but I and many many others greatly enjoyed MW1. MW1 revolutionized multiplayer shooters and brought a lot of fun new things to the genre. Back in the days (before screaming kiddies overtook the franchise) it was simply a fun. first. person. shooter.

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with BF3 improving upon that concept and bringing in a more advanced and more tactical version of CoD. No quickscoping, no hitscan, no lonewolfing. It’s a fun FPS. Many people enjoy it, that’s all that matters.
Don’t like it – play on larger maps and stick with vehicles. Problem solved.

  • Ketchupzz

OP metro is mostly played because of those 24/7 servers and i believe its the new DLC announcement and the release of the patch

  • Gameguy21

it better be the fucking patch, Or new DLC, or wait. LAG Free on PS3 and patch. that will make my week

  • Giveusthepatch

My fav map depends on the game mode. For conquest it’s operation firestorm hands down with gulf of Oman at second. For rush Id say damavand peak (I still haven’t gotten tired of base jumping). Favorite weapon also depends on the maps but i do generally like the m416 and the f2000. I play w the Famas if I’m concerned with kills or people are abusing the usuas12 w frag rounds. I hope we finally get the patch next week

  • http://www.nickartwork.com/ Loner

Operation Metro might be popular thanks to how different the gameplay is in different parts of the map and at different stages of round progression.
You’ve got an open battle in the park outside with a lot of room for maneuvre and flanking, then it transitions into fast and linear gameplay in long metro tunnels, then it pauses at a chokepoint forcing players to stop and think how to break through enemy defences, and finally it goes back to an outside area, but this time with buildings and different elevation.
It’s not a map, it’s several small maps mashed into one that creates a very fast-changing flow of gameplay.

  • Dmitri MedBroDev

My guess is that it will be a patch update, possibly with a deployment date, seeing as the recent buzz has been about patch stuff.  I wouldn’t say no to a DLC announcement, though.  An All-American map pack or 2143 would definitely keep me interested.

Rush on Kharg Island is by far one of the most epic game types I’ve played in BF3.  Whether it’s landing my LAV on the beach in the face of overwhelming enemy fire on offense or saving my teammates on the ground by blowing the Viper out of the sky in the Su-25 on defense, there is never a dull moment on that map for me.  Metro on the other hand is generally pretty one-sided.  I’ve yet to have a close game on Metro; when one team wins, it’s always by a huge ticket difference.  It’s fun when you’re face-rolling the other team, but it sucks when you can’t even get out of your spawn because you’re being mortared, sniped, and grenaded constantly.
As for guns, I’m constantly switching weapons, as my service stars for multiple guns attest to, though I find I do best with carbines and assault rifles at mid to close range.  Belt-fed LMGs handle too roughly for me and I’ve never been one for sitting in the back and sniping.

  • Tludt888

Personally, I can’t stand Metro sometimes. But to each their own, people liked dumb maps in CoD. Metro’s good for getting a 1:1 K/D while still not helping your team in any manner. Too many times do I see someone go 23/21 or somesuch number on Metro. Granted, it’s not all about the K/D in Battlefield but still… it’s just a cluster f*** that’s all it is.

    News is good.

  • TheOne

Op Metro is popular because of stat padders. People need to grow some balls and get good stats without playing on Metro all the time.

    • http://www.nickartwork.com/ Loner

There are a ton of other maps you can stat-pad on. Rush on Grand Bazaar, 64 player TDM on nearly any map. Don’t assume that Metro is the only map where people pad their stats. :/

      • Jtr165

“roam the underground halls, light machine gun in hand, racking up the kills.”
I must be playing a different game, as for some reason i get a connection error if i try to join metro without a usas equipped…and i’m not the only one, as i haven’t seen a different weapon used there since 2011…

        • Phatl2028

wow i play on PS3 and its mostly LMG and USAS fairly balanced with FAMAS , and a bunch of 320 or RPG noob tubers. it’s a great map because of its intensity and need for quick twitch reactions. it’s a great map for SDM also same reasons.

One of my other fav would be Grand Bazaar , Siene Crossing and Capian Border. I enjoy almost all maps the only one I dislike is Tehran purely because of all the MAV GLITCHERS once that gets fixed one of these years it’ll be fun again.

B2K maps would be pretty good but again MAV GLITCHERS ruin that experience, my friends and I refer to B2K as BACK TO KAMPING. CQ matches are good on it and most RUSH matches also but I enjoy the thrill of SDM 4 vs 12 I truly love they can be a blast.

I wish DICE would of been able to wait a few months longer to release this game but thanks to the greedy pigs that are EA they wanted to take a chunk from the other greedy pig known as ACTIVISION both are bringing down creative gaming at an alarming rate. EA gobbles up any good IP they can so to get as much cash as possible. I truly feel sorry for all the younger gamers who were brought into gaming the last several years and this all they know, I’m 32 years old and have been gaming almost all my life.

I’m not on here trolling for a fight with those that love COD I”LL NEVER go back to that trash again. BF3 is far from perfect and YES they have added COD like elements which make us BF vets sad/angry but there really isn’t much else for military shooters one is pure arcade style and one is more realistic and offers actual depth in its gameplay.

hopefully this patch whenever it comes will offer balance and get back to a more BF like experience, the weekends are horrible anymore it’s nothing but 320 spamming ( reloading is way too fast ) RPG whores FAMAS FAGS and  alot of it’s kids who have grown up playing COD.

but I enjoy the challenge to some extent even though my language gets extremely vulgar at times due to frustration, I never quit and that’s why I have a 3% – 4% quit , it would be 0% if you were able to back out of an ending round without quiting the game completely which is rediculous we shouldn’t have to wait till next rnd to start to back out I’ve gotten a ton of losses due to that even though I never played any time on that match, please DICE fix this. I play on PS3 and just got a nice 6 core pc which i’d love to play BF3 on but all my friends have consoles mostly and am ranked nicely in some catagories and don’t want to start fresh, so please take care of us console players.

sorry for the rant everyone I needed to get that off my chest, if anyone wants to they can pick apart my points or grammar if they so choose to.
          I’m tired so good nite.

    • http://twitter.com/DrOs666 DrOs

haha true , can’t play this map with usas12-frag everywhere

  • andy b

The reason Metro is played the most is that it has FAR too many tickets associated with it, players camp out, and thus the rounds take an eternity to finish.

  • Anonymous

    Battle Recorder?

    • Ailfawka

I concur, why should we pay more money just so we can record on consoles? the option should be available ingame. this is why COD elite in my opinion outdoes battlelog completely. complete the journey dice and get this done proper like you said you would.

      • nate

hopefully microsoft and sony will integrate recording features on their next consoles. that would make it a lot easier for devs.

      • Mikey

So you want them to start a subsciption service for BF3? They already seem eager to do that, so I’m sure they’ll be encouraged to hear you say that.

Metro is a point-whoring map but it does have a very fresh look and is fun to play if not too many people are using the fag rounds. Favourite weapons:
Assault: most of them are decent, but the KH2002 is the most fun.
Engie: M4A1. Once the 74u’s max damage has been nerfed, this gun will have no rival.
Support: M240B for effectiveness, M60E4 for fun.
Recon: L96, but for some reason I can’t use the M40A5 despite them being statistically identical.
All kit: PDW-R: tops my weapon list at 230 kills.

    • Phatl2028

Nice list overall, KH2002 is a great semi along with M16A4. most AR are pretty nice i believe it’s the best class for regular choices. M4A1 is nice but A-91 and SCAR-H seem to be better ( OP ) in my opinion. I also enjoy G53. I prefer all kits for support UMAD-12 (bring the hate) PDW-R and ASVAl are my choises, they can nerf UMAD-12 since my other two fav PDW will get some love with the buffs coming. If i run a accual support gun I prefer M27 IAR it’s like AR, and M60 because Ialways loved RAMBO lol..
recon sks is really nice for semi and the QBU-88 which i haven’t unlocked, best bolt’s are last few M40 L96 and of course M98B, you can’t go wrong with BARRETT and i love that they chose the.338 LAPUA instead of the .50 cal BARRETTS. in real life .338 LAPUA puts it to shame for range and accuracy.

Nothing needs to be revealed about the most popular map, because it’s either Operation Metro, Grand Bazaar or Siene Crossing for stat padding/meat grinding.

  • Jeff Gardner

Op metro on Squad Deathmatch is pretty awesome!  Its restricted to the first section from rush, the large park with the lake…  Its by far the best version of the map imho….  SQDM is my new favorite gametype as well, I find it puts a fresh face on all the maps.  Gameplay changes in a 4 vs 12 setting.  I highly recommend you all try it if you havent given it a go yet…  And my favorite AR is the L85A2 with acog…  kinds sucks up close, but thats what G18′s are for :)

    • Phatl2028

very nice choice it’s not OP like FAMAS is, one of my friends has 19000 kills with FAMAS and I give him shit since he’s logged 180hrs with it . I wish more players would give SDM a good play test. i also love the challenge of 4 vs. 12 yopu need to have headsets to really consistently win on there, CQ is awesome and Rush is usually intense too, just can’t stand CDM ( COD DEATH MATCH ) but i gotta get my medal for it sometime i’ve only played ten matches and won ten matches its too easy, i have one loss because you gotta wait to back out and i recieved a loss for a round i never played. shouldn’t have to bring up XNB menu and back completely out of BF then reload it to avoid that crap, fix this please.

  • Insomniac1

    Yeah, m16a3 is the bomb-diggity.

    • Phatl2028

       M16A4 better

“a ‘slight feeling’ next week will be a very, very… shall we say, rewarding, week?

Double XP maybe?  That sure as hell better not be all…

  • funkmastaxxx

jungle & winter maps its what I want..damn bc2 was so cool..

  • funkmastaxxx

lol and stop crying because u don’t like operation metro..u can’t chose ur warzone in a real battle situations either.

Well then it’s good that this isn’t  real battle.

  • Ned Collyer

I wish metro had that first area in the park on rush available for conquest. I rarely play metro, but I am getting sick of the b2k maps.

Also they need to give us some assignments. I’ve been trying to unlock each attachment for each weapon, but it’s boring as hell.

  • Ned Collyer

From looking at what some of the other commenters are writing I feel that they are misinterpreting what “most played” means.

Basically there are people who play metro, then there are people who play all maps.

Eg, 20% play metro, 80% play all maps.

I’m not sure of the exact stats, but I’m pretty confident that the metro only players are a small minority.

considering the fact that a patch on consoles costs 40k and that B2K was released with the first patch, they could very well package the next dlc with the next patch.

    • Phatl2028

very true which is why they’re saying spring as a patch release. I gave up on a battlerecorder and dropped $150 on Avermedias external HD gaming recorder which is available on NEWEGG.COM, it works great after firmware updates setting it to real time mode. it’s main drawback is it can only do 720p with component cables :-(

In reality, 720p isnt even that much different when compared to 1080p. In battefield 3 on consoles, the max resolution is actually just 704p. Everything above that is upscaled and a waste of storage. So you are fine, at least for now. Hopefully 1080p will be easy on next gen consoles.

        • Phatl2028

your correct nate it is only 704 a little disapointed, i understand why snce there’s not enough ram to handle more. but if you do a side by side comparison with the same tv with component vs. hdmi the hdmi is a cleaner picture. I’m very happy I purchased my cap box but I’m currently a bit overwhelmed since i’ve got close to 300gb recorded if any one knows of a quick and efficient program for video editing i’d love some recomendations.

That “Surprise” better be the damn Battlerecorder we’ve been wanting for months…. AT4 as well

    • Jeff Gardner

I think its time we all come to terms with the fact that this isn’t going to happen…  on consoles at least.  PC maybe… Dont get me wrong, no game would benefit more from a theater mode/battlerecorder, (ohhh, the epicness…) But the lack of info/backpeddeling over the last few months regarding this issue leads me to believe that they are just delaying the bad news as long as possible, hoping we just go away…  at this point, I would be happy with the announced balance tweaks.   But oh my, what you could have been…

  • outlawz

Nerfs are not rewarding, fags. I just want that big patch already. SQUAD STABILITY

  • Bob

Favorite wepon Scar H . Why , it looks bad ass even though it sucks right now . I love metro but not for the reasons as most people I like it couse its dark.

    • Phatl2028

which platform do you use it on, PS3 it’s OP very nasty weapon. it should be a beast since it uses 7.62 rnd and is about to be BUFFED lol. it’s definitely gonna be OP along with some other weapons after patch. it always seems like after every patch things get nerfed and others become OP, I don’t believe the community will ever be 100% happy with the balance but it just adds to the challenge.

  • sheff

I’m betting it’s a pay week at DICE, or they are going to try to sell us the next patch(a rewarding week for DICE not its customers). Also, Op Metro is shit and absolutely un-battlefield.

I agree, Metro is popular because it is a meatgrinder and useful for stats padding and ranking up quickly. The majority of the “rampage” BF3 videos are on this map.
What is interesting is not that Metro is the most popular map (personally I can’t stand it because of the reasons stated in the article) but because the next three most popular maps aren’t also small, linear maps (like Damavand and Grand Bazaar), but are the largest and most open maps.

I love Metro but I wish Mortar’s didn’t exist.Only time I’m ever running around like a chicken without a head is when I have a Mortar noob that is hell bent on killing me.

  • Redrud

Fav guns: MP7 and P90 mabby the as val when I unlock it

    fav map: firestorm

and I hate metro :). Its good for points and kills, but I think there isnt much skill/tac involved there (could be just me because Im a noob)

I think Operation Metro is the most played because honestly people may be done with vehicles and may prefer infantry combat. It simply lends itself to more interesting, possibly less predictable and more exciting encounters. One of the base pieces of FPS design history is predicting what the other guy is going to and Battlefield 3 provides unique possibilities for that for infantry.

  • Cdferrell79

Operation metro is probably my least favorite map because of all the choke post and one spawn point in the subway is the weaker of the two…  Grand Brazzaar is my favorite because it so many ways to get to one place…!

    No surprise there

METROLL IS POPULAR BECAUSE MOST PEOPLE ARE LAMERS AND WOULD RATHER STAT PAD FOR THEIR UNLOCKS TO GET THEM QUICKER THAN EARN THEM IN-GAME.

    no other reason.

  • Elseagoat

And kids get upset about shotguns and explosives, then turn around and double click that “24/7 OP METRO INSANITY” server. This is why I don’t play anymore. I can’t stand OP Metro, and my shotguns of all ammo types are nerfed to oblivion because of it. Try using a shotgun on any map with vehicles and see how it goes.

Maps should be a combination of indoor close quarters (Metro), mid range light vehicle streets (Bazaar), and large open areas (Gulf of Oman or Kharg beaches). If every map had all 3 of these, people that like specific guns or gameplay would flock to the areas where they most enjoy the combat. When you divide maps into separate maps for each type of gameplay, you get a shitty experience where guns that are balanced on some maps get nerfed because another map is specifically designed in such a way that they become ridiculously overpowered, and everything devolves into a run and gun assault rifle fest and the whole concept of customization gets thrown out the window (except of course that one grenade launcher or something that they never nerfed enough, so it always ends up being too good on enclosed maps.)
