Stats Show Battlefield 3 Close Quarter Combat Is Popular, Dev Defends Upcoming DLC

DICE Gameplay Designer Gustav Halling, settles concerns of the upcoming Battlefield 3 DLC, Close Quarters. If you’ve missed it, make sure to check out the announcement and more details right here.

The big question on some of the Battlefield 3 community’s mind is why DICE is focusing on infantry-based, close-quarter combat gameplay in their upcoming DLC, something that goes against what many fans would argue the Battlefield franchise has become known for. The simple answer is that Armored Kill, a DLC focused completely on large-scale warfare, is set to release shortly after Close Quarters and should provide a nice contrast, but also familiar Battlefield gameplay. The other answer is that statistics prove this close quarters play-style is, indeed, popular.

“We looked at what people are playing and the result is a tighter infantry experience with CQ…” stated Halling. It might also be surprising to know that in-game stats differ from various polls about the subject. Halling stressed that “polls say one thing, our real statistics say another. What players actually are playing not what some click.” It was also recently discovered that Operation Metro, a map that leans heavily on the CQB style of gameplay, was proven to be the most popular Battlefield 3 map. You can read more about it here. However, Halling admits, “it’s a interesting challenge for me because its not what is expected by us.” Even though, “its still BF3 gameplay, not any other game!”

Halling was also asked if team deathmatch would be the only game-mode featured on these maps. Logistically, this would make most sense considering their size. Take this map here for example. His answer, “we will release more details about the levels and game modes later,” suggests that the inclusion of other, or perhaps new game modes, is a possibility.

Halling would like fans to know that “it’s the same game. We are giving BF3 TDM players some more awesome maps. If you only play vehicles, Armored Kill is coming.”

Great, thanks to COD kids, which gave DICE a wrong view what fans really want.

    • http://twitter.com/PR0TENTIAL PR0TENTIAL

Yeah, because Call of Duty is the only shooter out there that has TDM? Battlefield needed to expand this avenue of their game and they seem to be doing just that.

        thank you!

I got into DICE games starting with BC1

I love the team deathmatch mode!!!

perfect for former COD players that want something new with DICE

        • GustavHallingSucks

Don’t you have a school bus you should be catching ?

      • Fayghet

Yet Dice made all there money due to their original fanbase, that enjoys large open vehicle and tactical warfare, not CoD shit.  You lose.

        • Bing

u mean ur lose considering their catering to the tdm for this dlc UR LOSEEEEEEEEEE!! not ours cause im happy with what ever dice decides to do besides did u see the trailer looked a hell of alot like bf3 not cod

    • PHATL2028

I don’t play CDM ( COD DEAT MATCH ) but i’ll give CQB a chance it’s definitely new for BF series, I understand why most us VETS are bitching but we don’t have to play it if you don’t want. Really want to see scale of destruction especially with explosives such as C4. Main fear will be spammers using 320 & rocket bs too much, they definitely gotta cut down reload speed on 320 atleast they’re cutting back rockets even though I think it should only be 3.

  • Jasper

well, alot of COD players are playing this game, so yea, most fans probably wouldnt be playing CQC as much as the new players. and the whole ‘armored kill is coming’ argument is bullshit, it will take forever for that DLC to come, they should have done Armored Kill before the CQC bullshit. FANS FIRST DICE! FANS FIRST!

    • Matthew McDole

Are you more of a fan than I am? I enjoy the infantry-only maps such as Bazaar, Metro and Seine. I have also played every PC iteration of BF with the exception of 2142. While I don’t care what order the DLC is releasing in, I am looking forward to CQ. Suppose the folks who DID migrate from COD to BF want the CQ pack released first.

Are you suggesting that because I don’t like the same style of play as you or the next guy hasn’t been playing BF for years, your wants supersede ours? Get over yourself…

      • GustavHallingSucks

That’s EXACTLY what we are saying.

        • Mke67

LOL!!!  Tell it like it is…

        • andy b

I’ve played virtually all the BF games, and all I can say is: WRONG.

Ask DICE how much more your opinion means to them, Gustav. Reality seems to indicate that they don’t give a sh** about your personal wishes over anyone else’s. Life is unfair.

      • Jasper

BF has never been about CQC, so yes, i am more of a fan than you.

        • Matthew McDole

You’re an idiot. Learn to adapt

    • GustavHallingSucks

      Right on ! AGREED 100 % !!!

  • JonBongNoJovi

TDM has no place in the battlefield franchise , if i wanted that kinda game type i would still be playing cod ffs , also did they take stats from pc only ?>?? where u can have 24/78 metro servers ??

    • Mikey

Except for the fact that TDM was one of the game modes in the VERY FIRST BF game. Geez, people…

      • http://twitter.com/Omega8Trigun Chris Stacy

Just because it was in it, doesn’t mean it was good. BF is an objective focused game. It is not made for tdm at all. It’s just been shoehorned in.

I can remember the TDM was quite popular on some maps at bf1942…

  • http://twitter.com/AnonymousAutumn Jesse

Pretty shitty rationale for putting in a whole map pack that will be akin to Op. Metro. Whatever! I’ll just get the new guns and carry on with my life in the B2K servers.

  • M27 IAR

I’m fine with the change of pace. And everyone should keep in mind the next two dlc appear to be more of the norm. And, as long as frag ammo gets nerfed to hell, it might turn out that close quarters can work in BF.

    • GustavHallingSucks

Change of pace? Nah, It’s business as usual considering all the new maps blow goats.

  • Anonymous

People go to Metro because it’s the easiest way to Unlock everything (having to “unlock” anything sucks), but the next 3 most popular maps (according to DICE) are Caspian, FireStorm, & Kharg….the Big maps that everyone actually loves to play on.

These little CQB maps should “Stay in the Bad Company series”, because that’s the BF series that was made FOR the consoles & it’s focus is smaller maps with a tight focus on infantry combat.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100002367454310 Jonathan Stoffregen

………no no we dont i like metro cause its a great map! it sukcs with the frags everywere but without em its awesome its my fav map besides we already have alot of meduim and large maps!

      • Anonymous

BF3 doesn’t have LARGE maps….those are only Medium sized (as compared to the past BF games). The PC community wants Large maps in BF3 for a change.

        • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100002367454310 Jonathan Stoffregen

           firestorm,and caspian

          • Anonymous

Firestorm, and Caspian are medium-sized maps (if you played all the other BF games you’d know this). They are the biggest maps in BF3, but PC’ers still consider them as “medium” when compared to the past BF games…well, we want “actual” large maps like the old days, and we certainly DON’T want these little CQC maps.

          • Fsdfds

You’re fucking retarded. When he said past BF games, he was referring to BF2 and BF1942. No wonder this series is going to shit, it;s being invaded by players like you.

Those maps are fucking tiny anyway. You don’t make a massive map than cram all of the flags right in the middle. But BC2 noobs like you think they’re the ‘BIGGEST MAPS EVA’.

Go back to COD if you like your shitty tiny infantry maps.

          • an0n0mus

i LOVE the “medium” sized maps like Kharg, Caspian, and Firestorm, the helicopters and jets make it so fun.  My least favorite map is indeed Metro, i don;’t understand how that was voted most popular.  And now that it seems like everyone has unlocked the USAS (USAS=U Suck At Shooting) frag rounds it makes that map just retarded to play on.  That gun requires not skill what-so-ever.  I say bring on more medium and large-scale maps and definitely more choppers and jets!!

      • clubo

        stat padder spotted.

        ROFL!

And there’s no large maps in bf3 open your eyes. There medium at best.

  • http://www.nickartwork.com/ Loner

I enjoy both worlds of Battlefield 3 – vehicle warfare AND infantry gameplay, open spaces AND tight corridors & narrow hallways, so I’m looking forward to the next DLC (and all the DLCs after that).

There are two things that really worry me though:
    1) How limited will these maps be in terms of available gamemodes? Current maps are fun because they have different sizes adapted for different gamemodes, so each gamemode provides a very unique experience on the same map. I hope Closed Quarters maps won’t be too limited in that respect otherwise they’ll get boring really fast. I hope they’ll feature both smaller and larger variations to allow both 12 player TDM and go as far as 32 player conquest.

    2) To me it seems like shotguns would be the way to go, so they would become the weapons of choice for most players and make assault rifles and LMGs useless. I’m curious how the map designers go about that problem.

  • Fr1987jr

We only need air supremacy, another game modes and more maps like Gulf of Oman (my favorite map)…

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Richard-Fabela/100002106917966 Richard Fabela

    i mostly play team deathmatch
    very welcome news.

Might as well change the name to BattleOffice or BattleCorridor…since this is not BattleFIELD anymore.  And for the people that like metro…you should have stay at COD :/

    • DaveTheDane

Really bro? Are you that dumb? I love BF, and i hate COD to the core, and guess what? There IS teamwork in small maps. I personally get the feelings of teamwork when you co-operate with your team-mates, for exemple in Métro when you fight your way through the narrow tunnels. That requires teamwork. BF is NOT known for huge maps or veichles, it is known for TEAMWORK!!! So next time before you comment on something you do NOT know anything about, just shut up, ok bro?

      • GustavHallingSucks

Are You on Crack ? BF is not known for huge maps or vehicles? LOL, OMFG.

    • GustavHallingSucks

Exactly why we need another game company to give them competition.  Battlefield is no more, sad times.

stats show that tight maps are popular becouse there easyer to rank up on but to me bigger is always better just add more tickets

  • Thanatos

Ok so because people don’t “Want what they click” or “Do what they click” then WE (THE REAL FANS) really don’t want the next patch?

    Close Quarters 20%
    Armored Kill 22%
    End Game 9%
    Next Patch 45%
    Rent-a-Server 4%

I’m looking forward to all the DLC and Really hope we get some Snow maps, Dice has the opportunity to really nail CQ, but also to fail abysmally! BF  IS NOT CoD, and should never become like it at all,

  • Dkdusty

what I don’t get is why some want only big maps or small maps? If they want to give us small, medium, big maps I am all for it! Variety is good if you ask me. And it seems to me that is what they are trying to do here. So stop crying! Play the big maps if that is all you like, play the small maps if it is all you like. Me I will enjoy playing small, medium, big maps.

“The simple answer is that Armored Kill, a DLC focused completely on large-scale warfare, is set to release shortly after Close Quarters”

Wonder what DICE’s definition on “shortly after” is. Seeing as the original announcement, said that Close Quarters is in June, and Armored Kill “in the fall”. Welcome to Call of Battlefield.

  • JustinD

I for one cant wait for close quarters. Battlefield style gameplay in CQB should be a ton of fun. I only play hardcore and rush at that interested in seeing what modes will work. Come on full auto M14 I hope thats a new gun

  • http://twitter.com/PR0TENTIAL PR0TENTIAL

LOL, you can tell who the immature ones are. They are the first ones to compare any game to Call of Duty. Sorry to burst some bubbles here but CoD did not invent perks or team deathmatch. Get your head out of the gutter and play the many other games that came before it to realize that. Battlefield infantry only is fun as hell, instead of crying about it, try embracing it. Nothing is going to change.

  • Anonymous

BF3 isn’t going to out COD, COD.

How about some 32 player infantry maps in the vein of Oasis and Arica CQ from BFBC2? Those seemed to be excellent primarily infantry maps.

  • Senn

    Close Quarter Combat…    Armored Kill.
small, infantry.    Large, tons of vehicles.

noooo!!!   I want a good mix of both, like Kharg island, Caspian border, Karkand, and Sharqi.

These maps are so much better than the ones with a single focus like Metro, firestorm, and Bazaar.

    • Senn

Just noticed I listed maps with the objectives spaced out vs. maps with the objectives in a linear fashion (24mansize).

So maybe screw off with the retarded linear maps?

  • ~Q~

Metro is not a typical BF map and its popularity is because people use it for fast ranking. If CQB maps were more popular in general you would expect to see all of them as the most popular, whereas what the stats show is that metro (the meatgrinder) is most popular and then the larger maps (Caspian Border, Firestorm and Kharg Island) and then the other smaller maps.

This should clearly point to metro being an anomaly rather than typical of the trend.

    • http://twitter.com/Omega8Trigun Chris Stacy

Exactly. How could they not see that it’s popular because of it’s point farming and not because that many people actually like it. It’s an outlier.

  • fiqst

People seem to forget that back to karkland had some pretty big maps, so large map fans have had their DLC already. The next DLC will be CQC and the one after will be large maps again. That’s 2 to 1.

Be happy that DICE are concentrating on making the most diverse shooter experience of all time, or would you guys rather typecast bf3 into a one gamemode type of game (conquest large)?

    • Wout Dekoster

Well, B2K maps are mostly bigger than the other BF3 maps, but compared to the old maps (the real BF2 maps) they still feel very small.
That doesn’t necessarily mean they ARE smaller, but since everything goes that fast (running, the cars, the tanks, etc) they feel small. That’s why the old bf fans are asking for really huge maps where you can flank in numerous ways, go through bushes, take a sideway, …, this stuff is all very limited in bf3 atm.

That said, you are right if you say that we already had 1 dlc with big maps, so, while I’m a fan of big maps, I also look forward to the CQC just because I think BF shouldn’t be limited to big maps, small maps doesn’t mean BF3 becomes COD, in my opinion the gameplay is completely different, even with small maps.

  • MEAHT

First of all I love metro because there’s nothing like seeing ceramic tiles and glass windows shattering into pieces around you as an enemy is trying to catch a bead on you. Theres really nothing like it on any game. The explosions are a bit of a bummer but there are plenty of servers that dont allow them which is awesome.
Secondly, I don’t understand why anyone would want just one type of map type released, especially for a game that thrives on giving players as many choices as possible. Its fine to be disappointed but to turn that into bad mouthing the devs is just a complete overreaction.

That being said anyone for an “el alamein” map remake ;D ?

    • http://twitter.com/Omega8Trigun Chris Stacy

They want just one type because that’s what the franchise was made for. It’s Battlefield. You fight a war on a huge area. People play it because of that. If they wanted to play 90-100% cqc maps, there’s already about 200 games that do that.

you guys that are bitching about this Close Quarters are fucking retarded, constantly complaining about its like CoD or for the CoD kids. Everyone’s play style is different, some prefer small maps some prefer big maps. If you hate this DLC, then DONT fucking get it.

hope they wont overcharge the dlc.. origens is FUCKING expensive compared to steam… “/

    • Wout Dekoster

That’s not true. Steam is pretty expensive for us European, they use #Dollar = #Euro…
That said, both Steam and Origin ask 50 euro for new games, that makes no difference, while in stores in the country you can find a lot of games for 35 euro.

Im a BF vet never realing playing COD series exceptfor 2 and MW and I still play it to this day it has one thing that BF3 doesn’t have and that is a mod kit so really when youuse that mod I cant think o the name that takes of killstreak and aim assist it’s almost like the CS series except CS with no iron scope makes it hardcore. If BF3 had a Mod kit ppl could have the Dino mod they want so bad and their would be less cheaters becuase more time developing better things for the community instead of ruining the community. Well except for the ones that have their mom  pay a monthly subscription to have aimbots and shit but if their wasnt ppl like that think how over populated the world would be

  • http://twitter.com/Omega8Trigun Chris Stacy

Great, here we go. They’re trying to please everyone instead of just sticking to their style that is what’s made it so popular in the first place. So if I’m understanding this correctly, these maps might be tdm only? Cool, then I’ll never have to play them. I’ll just earn the guns and have fun in the REAL BF experience.

I hope all of the people who want this map pack enjoy claymore camping supports, motion sensor camping recons, rpg spamming engis, M302 spamming assaults who only use Famas/F2000/AEK, nade spamming in general, USAS users, and shitty spawns. Because that’s probably all you’re going to be seeing on these maps.

only reason i play the CQB maps is because the damn helicopters are so overpowered the matches usuallly get overrun by chopper whores the whole time.  that being said, metro, seine, and bazaar are good size maps for CQB….not the garbage looking maps of the upcoming DLC..and I only play conquest so looks like i’ll be skipping on these TDM only maps (i know he said there is a possibility but that last sentence pretty much confirmed it, TDM only)

  • Anonymous

A bunch of new kids are now employed at DICE who have NO CLUE what made the past BF games fun in the first place. Instead of following the formula that everyone loved the games for, they said: “Lets change it and make it better”, which was apparently the worst thing that could have happened.

  • Sionr

    He has a point.

  • Chillbuddy

As long as the cq maps have conquest and rush modes this is not a problem for me. I like objective based gameplay.

  • Engineer

If the shotguns weren’t overused so much, these new maps would probably be fun. However, I think due to the close quarters circumstances, shotguns will be the go-to weapon of choice. At least if they patch the USAS-12 we won’t have to worry too much about that one in particular. I would much rather have larger maps, though. I’m not a huge fan of deathmatch in Battlefield. With that said, I won’t knock it until I try it. I sure hope they know what they’re doing.

The planned Close Quarters DLC does go against Battlefield fan desires.  The obsession with Call of Duty (COD) by EA/DICE has gone too far.  EA/DICE wants to cater to the 4-Cs Casual Console Call of duty Crowd.

Personally this is fantastic. I’m not a long time BF fan, got really into it with BFBC2  but I love Metro, as well as the other two CQB (forgot their names at the moment, but the paris one and the one in the marketplace). Those two maps manage to feature some of the most intense and challenging battles ever.
I really dislike Caspian, Kargh Island, and any of the really big maps, probably because I am on xbox. There just arn’t enough players to make it feel very concentrated, its incredibly slow, and never feels like a battlefield game to me. (ie there is lack of squad work due to large size, vehicles don’t coordinate, and sometimes charges go off before the defense has even retreated to the next stage.)
CQB is the way to go. I’m all for it. As long as its rush. Hate the no directional aspect of TDM

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1063393345 Scott Woodbury

I can explain the server telemetry results.  The gameplay is a result of the issues we have had and douche bag game mechanics.  On PS3 we had voip issues for so long few wanted the broader experience, and with beoken squads how can you game with your friends.  The result for many is it comes down to the lowest common denominator, people just jump in and try to get kills.  The mechanics drive the lone wolf gamer.  If the mechanics were in place like in BF2 then it would drive the broader team gameplay.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1063393345 Scott Woodbury

Just to clarify my personal opinion, I’m fine with DICE making the CQC maps.  Its the sandbox for the kids to play in while the rest of us play Conquest.  Ill play the CQC as a session practice for my gun game while I’m waiting for my friends.  I’m mostly looking forward to the Armored pack.

  • Anonymous

The fact of the matter is that the overall favorite player preference is instant action, that is, to drop a headshot on the enemy’s head the moment he respawn. This is definitely not typical BF gameplay but the game won’t really pose a challenge to COD. And this challenge is to be the FPS king that comes with the most moolah. This is what EA wants and not to appease hardcore BF players who will not really make a difference in their bottomline.

  • Puckrazy1

So, as of right now Close quarters is TDM only? Is that accurate? If so, DICE just saved me $15. Don’t mind smaller, tighter maps at all, but they gotta support Conquest. It’s a deal breaker for me.

If your in the tunnels of op metro an m98b with a red dot sight shouldn’t even be an option to use

  • Intheboombox

I do not mind CQB style maps at all. However if DICE is going to make them TDM only then that is a total fail on their part.

  • Cheesegrater83

Bunch of whiny little girls below. Look out!!

  • andy b

Are those stats they refer to that say Metro is “popular” based on rounds played, or on time spent on each map? Because on consoles, every server has pretty much the same rotation…so the numbers should be pretty even. So they must be talking about time spent playing, right? But due to Metro having way way waaaaaaaaaaaay too many tickets, and a layout that encourages deadlocks, rounds on Metro take an effing eternity. I question their logic on this.

I am not going to get all butt-hurt just because they are making CQC maps. IF done right, they’ll be fun.  I do have an issue with their explanation for it. I think they’re just using logically questionable statistics to cover up their REAL reasoning: taking on Call of Duty on its home turf.

  • J3nsn

    TDM only?………………FAIL

Close quarter combat maps are popular because it’s very easy to farm points in Metro…

  • Headshot

Sure Operation Metro is the most popular map. Their is no strategy to it so all the kids use this map to level up fast spamming M320s, RPGs and other Overpowered weapons that requires no skills in close quarter combat. That’s not Battlefield. Conquest Large is just so diversified it’s crazy. I’m 300 Hours in and still i find new ways to strategize against my opponents. If it’s only TDM i won’t buy. At least they could release both CBQ and AK simultaneously.
