New Mass Effect In Development, Will Be Built on Frostbite Technology [Update: Multiplayer Confirmed?]

Update

After the following Twitter statement: “In response to questions we’ve received, ME3 MP was very much a shared effort between Edmonton & Montreal,” we light-heartedly Tweeted at Roy, asking, “Is [the multiplayer] going to be just as awesome in the new ME?”

He responded, “I can assure you we are not trying to make it any less awesome!”

This could possibly be seen as confirmation of multiplayer returning to Mass Effect. Though no official announcement has been made, it is most certainly likely and expected, considering its success in Mass Effect 3.

If you haven’t heard the big news yet, BioWare has revealed that they are indeed working on development of the next Mass Effect installment.

Though details are extremely scarce at this time, BioWare Montreal studio director Yanick Roy has shed just some small information on the title.

In the recent blog post, Roy had this to say:

There is really not much I can tell you about the game right now, except that it will be built with the amazing technology of Frostbite as its foundation, enhanced by many of the systems that the Dragon Age III team has already spent a lot of time building.

The other thing I can tell you is that, while it will be very respectful of the heritage built over the course of the first three games, with the original trilogy now concluded and the switch over to a new engine, we are exploring new directions, both on the gameplay and story fronts. You can still expect the pillars the franchise is known for to be fully intact though, including diverse alien races, a huge galaxy to explore, and of course rich, cinematic storytelling.

The Frostbite 2 engine, originally developed by Digital Illusions CE, recently powered two of EA’s flagship shooter, Battlefield 3 and Medal of Honor: Warfighter. So far, every Mass Effect title in the trilogy have been developed with the Unreal Engine. This no doubt marks a good move.

For those unfamiliar with BioWare Montreal, they worked on some of the Cutscenes and post-DLC for Mass Effect 2, and took charge of the multiplayer portion for Mass Effect 3, which we’ve been covering very closely.

Having some solid multiplayer experience under their belt, this brings us to ask if multiplayer might become a bigger part of the next Mass Effect title.

How did you enjoy Mass Effect 3′s multiplayer? Would you ever like to see it become competitive instead of co-operative? Should the next Mass Effect title even have multiplayer? Let us know in the comments below.

and now the ending of ME3 makes total sense. IT WAS ALL ABOUT THE SEQUELS

Frostbite 2 is not that good in the consoles .. EA can’t you understand .. that engine for next generation of consoles or the present PC

Who said ME4 would be released this gen.

Exactly lol, I actually hope it’s released next gen, better hardware = more opportunities for devs to make the game they way they want without cutting out x or sacrificing y. It’s not just all about graphics you know.

Mass Effect is one of those franchise that is hard to let go.

Oh crap, frostbite engine 2? -.-’ Expect alot of bugs, sound loss, no voip in multiplayer and maybe horrible graphics like medal of honor warfighter.

yeah but its probably gonna be used on next gen consoles so a lot of those things won’t be in it.

what? what platform do you play? MoHW has beautiful graphics on PC, IMO better than BF3.

      • Jon

Huh, on max settings 1920x1080p it looks like a piece of shit to me, worse than CoD graphics, but not too awful. Battlefield 3 definitely looks more crisp and has better textures, don’t know why you think MoH is so stellar.

OMG, sure FrostBite 2 is a GREAT engine, and in my opinion its the BEST engine out there for a shooter. BUT, you can’t have every game run on it…

Look at MoH: Warfighter…It feels and looks almost the same as BF3…Don’t get me wrong, thats NOT a bad thing, but it feels repetitive and IMO takes away from the experience.

And EA continued their quest to make every game run on the boring and un-aesthetic Frostbite 2 engine, this would be their weapon of choice to kill the dreams of all long time fans of every series they could reach.

Please Frostbite 2 is the best engine ever. Quit hating you COD fanboy.

  • JK Monroe

Frostbite 2? Couldn’t you have chosen some other engine that can provide 60fps on consoles?

    • Niosus

All ME games on console ran at 30fps. It’s a 3rd person RPG/shooter. I think more detailed environments are going to add more to the game than 60fps.
