Titanfall Maps Can Support All-Mech Battles, Respawn Confirms Difference Between X360 and X1 Versions

According to developer Respawn Entertainment, there will be numerous gameplay opportunities, including different mixes between mech and infantry battles, during online play in Titanfall.

Speaking to MK Gaming, Respawn community manager Abbie Heppe explained how mechs can be called in during a match and how Titanfall’s maps support all sorts of combinations between the different styles of combat.

“Titans are available throughout the match and are set to a timer,” she stated. “You can decrease the amount of time it takes to call in a Titan by completing objectives and getting kills. Once you lose your Titan the countdown starts again. It is possible that everyone in the match could have a Titan on the battlefield at the same time.”

It sounds like things could get a bit hectic if battles are made up entirely of mechs, but she assures that Titanfall’s maps will be able to handle situations like that just fine.

“We have to have maps that support not only the Titans which are over 20 feet tall but also human-sized Pilots,” she said, “so even our ‘smaller’ maps are pretty large comparatively.”

Maps will also have areas that are more tailored to infantry gameplay. Heppe explains, “What’s cool is each map has areas for Titans and areas for Pilots, so you get these smaller maps built into the larger ones and all these cool pathways through them.”

Heppe was also asked about an offline mode in Titanfall, to which she responded that Titanfall is purely a multiplayer experience. She also confirmed that there will be differences between the Xbox 360 and Xbox One / PC platforms: “There will be differences because the platforms are different but the game isn’t finished yet so I can’t go into detail about what they might be.”

Really hoping this works out how they plan it to. If it does, This will be a great game.

    • WarBroh

So if everything works out it’ll be a great game. Your words are wise master.

      • AtheistMason

The concept for Titanfall is awesome so if it works out Titanfall will be awesome.

Some games have wrong (or flawed) concepts so even if everything’s right those games won’t be called “great games”.

I see you still have been whining about almost everything these days.

  • dpg70

Kinda hoping they realize a PS4 port is really in their best interests.

    • Johnny Neat

I wouldn’t worry. Word on the street and Respawn has avoided in interviews is that TitanFall is actually a timed exclusive.

      • dpg70

Which is why I think their “we’re a small shop” excuse was BS. Timed = paid for, not an ease of development choice.

        • Johnny Neat

Considering, they are small which is why they took the money and focused on a multiplayer only game.

          • http://www.facebook.com/datkidfromawendaw Clay Johnson

The multiplayer has a campaign within it, cut scenes and everything. It’s just not a traditional singleplayer campaign

      • XFistsClenchedX

Oh, well everyone knows rumors are always true.

        • Johnny Neat

Really, that’s what you had to add to this discussion? Thanks. I just enjoy the hipster skeptics or fanboy apologists slash haters.

Look while I’d agree that the internet is filled with half assed rumors, Respawn has refused to say either way about that question. If it were no, it’d be a clear won’t or can’t happen answer. So yeah, it’s more than likely TitanFall is a timed exclusive.

          • XFistsClenchedX

Just because they haven’t talked about it, doesn’t mean that it’s true. Microsoft could easily dump money on them and the PS4 will NEVER get Titanfall. Just like the PS3 never got the first Mass Effect or the first Dead Rising — both of which are the best in the series.

            • Johnny Neat

Anything could happen, but odds are and the vibe is that it’s a timed exclusive. If it isn’t, some will miss out. Shit happens.

            • XFistsClenchedX

Shit happens is how Sony fans must have felt when they only got 2/3 of the Mass Effect Series and 1/3 for the Dead Rising series.

            • Christoph

You do know that PS3 got Mass Effect 1 a while ago.

            • XFistsClenchedX

No, Wikipedia didn’t update their page I guess. Either way, I’m sure Sony fans would love Halo and Gears of War and other games. Microsoft wouldn’t let that happen.

            • Christoph

True, but still chances of Titanfall or its sequel coming to PS4 are much more likely since it is made by a 3rd party studio which already started developing on PS and even chose its engine because of the PS3.

            • zacflame

only veteran die-hard fans love halo, and there’s what, maybe 10,000 left?
and only stereotypical males who only like things with pointless violence and testosterone explosions like gears of war.

            • the greater gamer

Pointless violence is in practically every game, so unless you dont play any of the games that have come out in recent years, then your basically insulting yourself and 90% of the gaming community

            • the greater gamer

Also if you bother to play the campaigns the storys are actually good especially halos

            • Johnny Neat

Why do you keep bringing up games that can’t and won’t ever be on PS3 or 360? Halo and Gears? Fucking really? Come on. Wikipedia should update, so you won’t blast mind-boggling non-arguments.

            • zacflame

dude, you can play the whole mass effect series on PS3 right now.
and Dead rising, i’m not ENTIRELY sure, but i’m pretty sure the first dead rising is on PS3 aswell. either way, dead rising kinda sucks anyway.

            • http://www.facebook.com/datkidfromawendaw Clay Johnson

The first Dead Rising(excluding the Wii remake that’s almost entirely different) is Only on Xbox 360. I think it’s a great game with lots of player freedom. You might not like it doesn’t made it any less of a game

            • http://www.facebook.com/datkidfromawendaw Clay Johnson

The specifically stated in their interview “It’s not out of the question.” There is no yes or no, just possibility. If you Google search the Game Informer magazine regarding Titanfall, you’ll know that only part of the reason why they chose Xbox One was because of a small team. Now explain to why they chose PC as another viable platform and not PS4? Because Microsoft is having them use the Azure platform which can be uses on PC.
              http://www.respawn.com/news/le

Respawn hates player hosted games and Microsoft feel P2P is holding back multiplayer. They talked to both Sony and Microsoft for a solution to that and MS was the one that offered. Microsoft is the one that already has a cloud based platform in place, and cloud based servers are far cheaper than any “normal” dedicated server, because with those, the devs have to

              1. pay for the servers

              2. More to add more servers.

              3. Maintenance and upkeep

its costly. Azure is a service intended to minimze upfont and ongoing cost And with that said, Respawn, or any other dev that wishes to uses has to pay for

              1. Pay for the servers

That’s it. I’m sure they would have gotten the servers for PC regardless but considering MS is providing it at low cost, it’s better than contracting someone else to use servers, which is actually where cloud saving on PS3 comes from. Sony contracts cloud storage from another company, for example, they actually just renewed a contract with Box to provide 50GBs of free storage to Xperia owners.

            • B_Boss

This could be true but I prefer to exhaust more possibilities that are also most likely true.

I believe political/monetary factors may also play a big role here. Much of it unspoken by both MS and Respawn.

We know the PS4 is capable of Cloud Computing and we know that the PC (apparently) wont have the “nice-ities” (http://gimmegimmegames.com/2013/06/respawn-titanfall-couldnt-be-made-without-xbox-cloud-xbox-one-version-better-than-pc-version/) that the XB1 has (whatever the HELL “nice-ities” means is not clearly defined by Respawn to my knowledge) but if the game is being developed for PS4 in the long run and if, as Respawn has said “You couldn’t make this game without having that kind of dedicated server support” then I think it is probable to assume that Sony will most likely have that kind of support or Infrastructure in the future if not at present (Sony has been pretty quiet about this as far as I am aware).

            • http://www.facebook.com/datkidfromawendaw Clay Johnson

Sony, Shuhei Yoshida more specifically, has stated that the PS4 has cloud computing for things like matchmaking, playing while downloading trophy porting and the like. The basic system level stuff that Microsoft stated before their reveal that the Xbox One can dohttp://www.polygon.com/2013/6/12/4424022/sony-shuhei-yoshida-says-ps4-cloud-computing-calculations

It’s entirely political. One side offered something they needed that the other does not have. Monetary factors mostly only play for multi platform games like Watch Dogs having exclusive content on PS, or Both Call of Duty and Battlefield 4 now giving XBox gamers first access to DLC. Other than that, monetary factors are used by generally one sided fans to explain something they either can’t, or don’t want to come to terms with. I’m getting a PS4 day one With Battlefield 4, Watch Dogs and The Order already paid and I don’t care if Titanfall comes to PS4 or not, I’ll just play it in one of the other platforms it’s designed to run on(lucky I have Xbox 360 but it’ll be different). It’s always political. Did you know Ready at Dawn could have made The Order: 1886 multiplatform but decided to stay with Sony.

“We saw the initial talks about PS4 and what it was going to be and we’ve had a relationship with Sony for 10 years, so we felt it was the right time to not only move but to move to a single platform again where we could bring our expertise to something that could make us realize the game we wanted. Once we knew that internally, we approached Sony and said this is what we have and here’s where we want to go, and they listened to us and we had a great discussion about how big it was going to be, and it turned out to be bigger than expected. So it’s a good conscious decision from us to target a platform that we could make the most of,”
              http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2013-07-19-gamestop-exploiting-developers-and-consumers-says-ready-at-dawn-boss
That last sentence sums up what both developers have in mind for their respective game. Now would I go to assume monetary factors are in play? Nope, they’ve clearly outlined their reasons

            • http://www.facebook.com/datkidfromawendaw Clay Johnson

MS and Respawn share common interests that P2P and player hosted games being generally bad for multiplayer especially when trying to pave forward console gaming and that’s why they are both going the route of dedicated servers for all Xbox One versions of games. Tons if not all PC games have it because the devs only buy for one platform so in that regard it’s cheapest for them. With Azure cloud servers, Microsoft is doing the maintenance, all devs do is pay low cots to use, that’s the solution. I’m sure they could have used physical dedicated servers that Sony has, but it’s cost a way more than a cloud based server in the long runand there is extra, faster processing with cloud servers and datacenters that onboard processor cannot do. An example I’ve said time and time here. At E3 there was a closed doors event called Xbox 101. I’ll link to the article here as yping will made this comment longer than it already is. There are opinion from developers in the link toi from those fully in favor of what it brings to their game(Respawn and EA) to the as if yet not do sure(DICE) to the inbetweeners(Ubisoft)
              http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2013-06-19-microsoft-makes-the-case-for-xbox-ones-300-000-server-cloud-but-what-do-developers-think

            • B_Boss

You cannot go on record speaking of which monetary factors were at play lol. I should most companies (at least in regards to gaming lol) simply do not, so we can’t ultimately say that there were no monetary factors simply because it was not mentioned.

I suppose some people who bring up monetary factors can be one-sided but this isn’t life or death for me personally and I humbly welcome coming to grips with whatever truth accurately corresponds with reality lol. I think history (up to this very moment I type this) has shown us that not all factors are publicly stated, especially monetary. I gladly welcome the very notion my theory is wrong. I do think it is a possibility but it has no bearing on my decision to either buy the game or (someday) an XB1.

The thesis of my position is that the PS4 is quite capable (from merely a technical standpoint) of the Cloud-based computing & Matchmaking, etc, as the XB1, the only question is Sony having the infrastructure to accomplish it with a degree of high quality.

            • ROCKMONEY

I’ve been playing Mass Effect on my PS3 since Christmas…

        • Guest
        • B_Boss

          lol…

          • James K

            Love it.

      • B_Boss

Yeah and if you watch one video in particular, I SWEAR there is a Dualshock 4 on one of the employee’s desk…I mean its a given to me personally that it’ll be on PS4 after a time. I am betting these guys probably enjoyed the hell out of the PS4s hardware and the fact that with the PS4 is certainly capable of Cloud Computing which Titanfall really likes.

        • Johnny Neat

          Hear, hear!

    • XFistsClenchedX

Yeah, well putting the Last of Us onto the Xbox 360 would be in Naughty Dog’s best interests.

      • Johnny Neat

P.s. Just to confirm your statement is coming from the uneducated skepticism camp, Naughty Dog couldn’t even if they wanted to put any of their games on Microsoft’s Xbox because it’s a subsidiary of Sony Computer Entertainment. Duh, logic and the powers of deduction win again.

        • Johnny Neat

It’s so entertaining to see facts get down voted. So many cry babies online. I’ll up vote myself for shits and giggles.

          • http://www.facebook.com/datkidfromawendaw Clay Johnson

            Eh

        • XFistsClenchedX

Yes, logic does win again. Unfortunately, you’re not wielding any. I know who Naughty Dog is. It doesn’t change the fact that it would benefit Naughty Dog or any other developer massively for their game to end up on the Xbox 360.

          • Johnny Neat

Can’t argue with developers benefiting from their games being available everywhere to anyone, but in Naughty Dog’s case it can not happen. So why bring this up?

            • XFistsClenchedX

Because it is highly unlikely that the PS4 will ever see Titanfall. MS likely will never let that happen.

      • dpg70

lol! I think TLoU is selling just fine without it. Nice try though.

        • XFistsClenchedX

..and Titanfall will sell just fine without the PS4.

          • zacflame

It just might sell better as a PC exclusive as well.
you know what? forget the whole thing!
            NES exclusive. endless profit.

  • HurlingDervish

So it’s being made by the guys who made Modern Gayfare 2?

    Yeah, pass.

    • alex

Haha real original you think of that yourself? Lemme try. Why don’t you go play….. bitchfield 4… was that a good one?

      • zacflame

        yeah, but that’s actually good.

    • naaman

more like gayfield 4 if you go by recent reports of a dice gay parade going on

    • Kidanny Mendez

Actually HurlingDouchebag, Its from the creators of CoD4

      • Johnny Neat

        and MW2.

      • the greater gamer

He wasnt born when that came out

    • the greater gamer

Good, hate to see you in this great game. P.s. get the hell off my battlefield.

    • Johnny Neat

How was it gay exactly? Granted, it had an unfinished multiplayer due to the imbalanced nature of it suspected to have been the result of the massive exit of IW employees over the beef with Activision, but gay?

I think you’re referring to every CoD since the original BlackOps.

      • XFistsClenchedX

The original Black Ops is the best COD I ever played and I’ve played all of them, except the first one.

        • Johnny Neat

That explains something. To each their own.

          • XFistsClenchedX

Yeah, it explains that Treyarch did a better job with balancing perks and their maps were better. Oh, and the Black Ops single-player campaign is the best COD campaign.

        • Dirtknap

Agreed, it felt like the most weighted, purposeful and competitive entry to date. Any of the in game imbalances could be dealt with easily enough (except for freakin second chance, I still don’t understand what they were thinking).

        • killzoner

The original Black Ops is the COD game that started my frustration in the genre. It was the first COD game with screwed lag/lag comp, carried over to MW3 and now BOP 2.

    • killzoner

Modern warfare 2 sans glicthers and cheaters is actually a pretty solid shooting COD game, that is, if you really played it a lot. This is second best to MW4, all made by the original IW.

the only Xbone game i’m jealous of

  • jrstryker

Sounds like a tough balance but I hope it works. From the E3 demos, looks the pilot have some sort of jet packs. I hope that would allow pilots to get around a big map faster and avoid the feeling of having to run for 5 minutes to get any where.

Also wonder how much damage a mech can do to a building? Yes there may be more tight and closed-in areas, but that may not last for long if a mech can knock the whole area flat.

  • KiiNG305

Titanfall will come out on PS4 eventually. Idk any major game published by EA being exclusive to one console.

  • Jose Gaytan

Titan fall looks really good, but the mechs :(

  • roland0811

All of the gameplay footage I’ve seen was mechs and infantry moving down cramped corridor maps.
Not a fan of small maps in shooters. It’s why I’ve dropped several FPS franchises in the first place.
