Call of Duty: Ghosts Multiplayer – Everything You Need to Know

Call of Duty: Ghosts multiplayer is coming and Infinity Ward was more than happy to share with the world earlier today some of the new innovations that you’ll get to discover on November 5.

But if you missed the live streamed global multiplayer reveal of the studio’s next-generation flagship FPS, no worries. We got you covered.

Filled with new features, game mechanics, customizations options, weapons, perks, and killstreaks, Call of Duty: Ghosts is well on its way to becoming a notable evolution in the Call of Duty franchise. There was a lot to see and learn during the reveal, so let’s get down to the nitty gritty. Here are all of the key takeaways from the event that you need to know.

All info is sourced from either the official Call of Duty website or from notes taken during the reveal.

Call of Duty: Ghosts Multiplayer – Built on Three Pillars

Your Soldier

CREATE-A-SOLDIER

In Call of Duty®: Ghosts you don’t just create a class, you create a soldier. Choose the head, body type, head-gear and equipment, and you can even create a female soldier for the first time. With over 20,000 possible combinations, you can create the soldier you’ve always wanted. And each soldier you create will also have his or her own load outs.

PERKS SYSTEM

The new Perks system has more perks than ever before. Every perk has a value from 1 to 5, and you have 8 points to allocate. So for example, choose 4 perks each valued at 2 points a piece, or even 8 perks, each valued at 1. You could also choose to get rid of your secondary weapon and get up to 11 perks.

KILL STREAKS

There are over 20 NEW Kill Streaks in Call of Duty®: Ghosts — such as Juggernaut Maniac, Helo-Scout, Vulture and the ODIN Strike. You can even bring in Riley, from the single-player campaign, as your guard dog to warn you when enemies are near, and to attack enemies if they get to close.

SQUADS

Squads introduces a whole new level of competition to Call of Duty. We’ve taken the best parts of the Multiplayer experience and combined that with a vastly improved AI and our new mechanic of creating your own squad-mates. All the hard work you’ve put into customizing, playing, and prestiging your squad can now be put to use on a brand new playing field.

Your World

NEW ENGINE

From maps and modes, to animation and audio, to who you are as a player — this is the biggest overhaul of multiplayer since the original Modern Warfare®. Things like Sub-D, Displacement Mapping, Real-Time Lighting, and Dual-Rendering tech gives us the ability to build the most visceral gameplay experience we’ve ever created. And at 60 frames-per-second across all platforms, there is nothing like Call of Duty Multiplayer.

In Call of Duty®: Ghosts multiplayer, customize your soldier and squad for the first time. Level environments are more realistic and immersive than ever before, and now Call of Duty Anywhere lets you stay connected to the game wherever you go.

DYNAMIC MAP EVENTS

We’re immersing players in the multi-player maps in ways similar to what we’ve done cinematically in single-player, while adding new ways to play and interact with the environments in a meaningful way. So we’ve introduced new interactive elements and player triggered events that make the maps evolve as the match goes on. There’s a huge range here. From player-triggered traps to map-changing killstreaks, the entire landscape can shift and require new tactics and strategies.

TACTICAL MOVEMENTS

Call of Duty®: Ghosts has redefined how you move through the world.

  • A new contextual lean system now allows you to lean around obstacles without adding button combinations
  • A new mantling systems allows you to move fluidly over objects, while not losing momentum.
  • The knee slide allows you to naturally transition from sprinting to crouch to prone.
AUDIO DESIGN

A completely revamped audio design featuring an ADSR-based reverb system, reactive emitters and locational battle chatter gives you a more immersive experience.

COD Anywhere

CALL OF DUTY APP

Adds a new dimension to Call of Duty®: Ghosts, allowing you to stay connected wherever you go, and engage in new experiences.

COMPANION EXPERIENCE

The Call of Duty App includes some of the best and most popular features from Call of Duty® Elite, such as tracking your career stats, as well as the ability to check out a friend’s or rival’s stats.

Communicate via the Rally Up and Clan Chat features, to keep in touch with your friends and Clan members

Second Screen functionality is there to enhance your experience, and not get in the way.Pre match, you can edit your squad. In match, you have one-touch access to swap your loadout for your next spawn.

CLAN WARS

  • MegaMan3k

The more I watch videos, the more I can’t tell if scopes are actually “zooming in realistically” or if it’s just blurring the edge instead of showing black.

It looks like it still just zooms the entire screen. The blurred area outside of the scope should not be zoomed in any way. Disappointing.

    Anyway –
Is there any word on how attachments play with the new perk system? Will there be a similar point system for attachments? Is it back to one “free” attachment?

    • Alexuppermost

I’ve looked, it looks like it really does only zoom in for the scope only. I hope they keep this feature and don’t change it before release.

    • Thom

they said all attatchments are free. but i think the blurriness is screwing with you, from what i saw outside the scope wasn’t zoomed at all. just very blurred so you’ll catch a shadow not neccessarily an entire player.

    • ThtJstHapnd

It doesn’t zoom in the outsides. It brings them up because not only are you pulling the scope in to you, the natural thing to do is lean your head in towards the scope. So your seeing the world from a different view.

  • WarHero

Even though I’m not picking Ghosts, the one key thing the CoD needs is Dedicated Server support. I was disappointed with no mention of this whatsoever and if they don’t incorporate it then you’ll see people complaining about hosting and lag. All of this neat features in store for CoD fans can be decimated if the game’s multiplayer is frustrating. It’s 2013 and CoD over the years have made billions of dollars there shouldn’t be an excuse, hopefully it will be in the future.

    • ThtJstHapnd

As this is what I was disappointed about as well. Dedicated servers are a must. They have made so much money. To still rely on the p2p system is just greedy. To help you though(it helped me) Mark guy got asked about Dedicated servers and he said ” they couldn’t speak on that right now”. So fingers are still crossed and I’m still hopeful.

    • HH KiLLaMaNiLLa

I watched a PAX Xbox One conference and they said the Xbox One will be dedicated servers only so no more host migration so that’s a lil info if you didn’t know it.

      • incubusman421

probably dedicated MATCH MAKING servers… as usual

        • HH KiLLaMaNiLLa

Downvoted for providing info what a bunch of trolls. But anyways Dedicated servers means nobody will have host power and no more host migration. And dedicated servers is a great thing for consoles a few games have had them and the few that had i rarely had any lag at all. So let the downvoting start over fucking losers.

    • Nelson Batista

BO 1 had dedicated servers and guess what happen, a chrouch only and nuketown only game……. im a pc gamer and im pretty mad of what the pc cod comunity has done to BO…….at least i can find all i want in bf3 “game modes, maps ect…..” but thats not the case in BO 1

      • ThtJstHapnd

Theres a difference between dedicated servers on consoles and dedicated servers on pc. Pc you can buy or rent a server. That would not be the case with COD. BF3 you can rent a server on consoles and it turned into really high ticket counts and spawn killing. If they just take advantage of MS cloud servers then everything will be alright, for now.

    • Jon Cameron

Money has nothing to do with it. In fact, they would probably make money from doing it, not spend money. I’m sure there are a ton of server providers willing to pay to have their servers used in such a popular game. You can blame IW for wanting to “experiment”, in their own words at least, with MW2 and IWNet’s birth.

There is no excuse as you said though, you’re right.

    • zacflame

they came on the stage to tell you what the multiplayer contents are, not how they support it.

    • Your name here

It will not happen as long as people keep buying it every year.

    • Michael Lovett

I think they are anticipating the “New” version of xbox live will alleviate most if not all the server issues.

  • ThtJstHapnd

    1. Dedicated Servers
    2. Fix where bullets come out of your gun and not the top of your head.(head glitching)

Those are my two biggest complaints. Also someone that doesn’t play the objective shouldn’t be put on my team with me. I’m tired of having more captures than the rest of my team combined and losing.

    • AtheistMason

I think to fix the 2nd they need to rebuild an engine from ground up…

      • ThtJstHapnd

        Agreed.

        • z0ml3ie P1kachu

Has anyone came out with a new engine lately? No

          • ThtJstHapnd

Did I say anyone did? I didn’t I said I like how they advertise it as “New Next Gen Engine” It’s not. It would require a new engine, that has been stated by multiple cod devs, as you said it would cause problems with the first person perspective. People would also freak when they realized that box in front of them is taking their bullets.

            • Mr. Thuggins

Technically, it is a next-gen because the game will be played next-gen consoles. See how they like to get tricky with their words? Lol

            • ThtJstHapnd

Once again…. still not new. I know the words they used. Then they got attacked for saying how the engine was reused, just changed so much the original engine isn’t seen.

            • Mr. Thuggins

I’m not sure why you’re telling me this. I understand that it’s not a new engine, I never started that it was. I was just giving what I assume is their reasoning for calling it a next-gen engine.

  • sugarjungle

Cod has been really laggy ever since theater mode. I welcome it not being included.

    • subperception

You also don’t need theatre mode now either because the next gen consoles both have built in capture cards

      • Nelson Batista

        5 min caps tops i heard………..

    • ThtJstHapnd

I think that since theater has been created the consoles can’t keep up and hence some of the “lag comp” delays people are seeing is a result. I remember I had a lot better performance on BO when it was an option you can turn on and off.

  • Derek

Lol @ them claiming this is a new engine… But some of the additions are kinda cool.

    • shawn

the xbox 1 engine is approx 80% new material. and btw nothing is ever new the term “new” is simply “puffery” google it if your not familiar with it .

nothing in life is hardly ever new . new can only be done 1 time.

everything in life is just an upgrade of the original model/concept

the clothes you buy the food you eat is merely an upgrade

that car you just bought brand new off the lot is not brand new its mainly an upgrade of the original cars built by henry ford in the early 1900′s

      • Derek

You sound like you work for Activision trying to explain that one away. That is a fairly ridiculous explanation of “new”.

Been playing PC games for 20 year and I have a decent grasp of what a new engine is and what a modified engine is.

Take the source engine valve uses for example….if a game was on source and either changed or developed an engine like Frostbite….I would consider that switching to a new engine. So yes it can be a but subjective towards improvements of magnitude rather than minor upgrades such as COD Ghost.

        • z0ml3ie P1kachu

Frostbite is almost as old as the god engine. Not sure about the source engine. “New” engines will probably not be seen for awhile. It’s not worth starting from code line 1 to get to something better than what you had already. Much easier (and better) to improve on what you have. All IMO I’d like to add.

          • n0pe

Facts here. Frostbite was pretty much rebuilt in 2011 for BF3. Original Frostbite was created in 2008

CoD Ghosts uses the engine from MW3 and MW2, which was an enhanced ID Tech 4 engine from 2004. The BO series uses a modified ID tech 3 from 1999. The original version of the ID tech engine was used in Wolfenstein 3D in 1992.

So basically, you are just wrong.

          • Derek

So the Source 2 engine being developed by Valve, the Red 3 Engine from CD Project (makers of The Witcher), and the CryEngine 3 that powers Crysis 3 are all complete anomalies according to you because “new engines will probably not be seen for a while”

And yes you can look at the Frostbite engine as it is now as an upgraded engine I suppose. But compare the newest Frostbite engine and Newest CoD engine on the PC and see which one looks amazing and which one looks like severly dated. Its important for an Engine to have legs and room to grow with this new Generation and the CoD engine clearly lacks the ability to scale upwards. Its great for a 360/PS3 but it shows its age something fierce on PC and conversely PS4/XB1

            • z0ml3ie P1kachu

You notice the numbers after the engine title? That means its an upgrade. Had they made a brand new engine, it’d have a new name. So yea, I don’t see to many brand new engines out there. Ow does FB3 look better than the “new” cod engine? Absolutely. But neither are actually “new”. They are just upgrades like an iPhone 4 is to a 5.

            • z0ml3ie P1kachu

Thought the audio was a nice touch. The slide was cool. Most interesting is the Create a Soldier option. Still, since I haven’t really played COD much since MW2, it’s going to take something more to bring me back.
