Killzone: Shadow Fall Multiplayer Q&A – Dedicated Servers Confirmed, Frame Rate “60FPS”, And More

With only two months left till release, Guerrilla Games has provided yet another update on Killzone: Shadow Fall’s multiplayer, answering many questions that players had at this year’s Eurogamer Expo.

Down below you can read the full Q&A, which covers many areas of Killzone: Shadow Fall multiplayer

  • Q: Will Killzone Shadow Fall multiplayer have a variable frame rate?

A: No, we’re running 60fps. However, the game may drop a few frames in extreme situations – when there are a lot of GPU-intensive things going on at once. Guaranteeing a constant 60fps under such circumstances would’ve required undesired concessions. We wanted to make sure Killzone Shadow Fall multiplayer would present a visual spectacle, boasting a stunning level of detail in 1080p at 60fps, while still allowing 24 players and their drones (effectively 48 entities) to take part at once. We’re very proud of the results – when you move through the maps you’ll notice lots of intricate details, from beautiful reflective surfaces to individually moving leaves on the foliage.

We’ve also received several questions about the new Classes and their abilities:

  • Q: What happened to [multiplayer class X] from previous Killzone games?A: There are now three classes to choose from in Killzone Shadow Fall: Assault Class, Support Class and Scout Class. Classes from previous Killzone titles such as the Tactician, Engineer and Medic are now represented by the secondary abilities of the highly versatile Support Class. We’ll have more on the Support Class and the Scout Class in upcoming Killzone.com articles.
  • Q: How are the Assault Class Nano Shields balanced?

A: As mentioned in our Assault Class article, Nano Shields can block enemy attacks while allowing your projectiles through. Activation isn’t instantaneous, though – there’s a slight delay as you set it up, and you won’t be able to wield your weapon during this period. After activation you have to wait until the shield is destroyed or dismantled before you can place a new one.
  • Q: How are the Support Class Spawn Beacons balanced?A: Killzone Shadow Fall sees the return of player-deployed spawn points, known as Spawn Beacons. The Support Class has the ability to place them almost anywhere in the map (like Killzone 2’s Spawn Grenades), but it takes a while to set them up (like Killzone 3’s Tactical Spawn Points). Spawn Beacons can be destroyed by any class, although some weapons will yield quicker results than others.

Next, a couple of points about weapons in Killzone Shadow Fall multiplayer:

  • Q: Will rocket launchers be secondary weapons, like in Killzone 3?A: Rocket launchers aren’t secondary weapons like they were for certain classes in Killzone 3. Instead, grenade launchers and rocket launchers will be available as attachments for the heavier primary weapons. This means less weapon switching in the heat of battle.
  • Q: I prefer hip-firing rather than aiming down sights – can I still do that?A: If you’re one of those players endowed with dead aim, you’ll be happy to know that ‘hip-firing’ (firing a weapon without using the sights) is still an option in Killzone Shadow Fall multiplayer. Some weapons can only be fired by aiming down the sights, however – particularly the heavier/more dangerous ones.

Concerning the new Custom Warzones feature:

  • Q: Will there be official Warzones?

A: For those who prefer their Warzones tried-and-tested, there will be default Warzones to play in. In addition, Guerrilla will frequently try out and highlight new and interesting custom Warzones created by the community. Both types of Warzones will be easily accessible from inside the game.
  • Q: Can Challenges be completed in bots-only Warzones?A: To emphasize true skill and prevent players from artificially boosting their stats, custom Warzone games featuring bots will not count towards completing challenges in the Progression System.
  • Q: Can I play Custom Warzones against just my friends?A: Custom Warzones can be private games that only you and friends can play. This is particularly useful if you want to train in a less competitive environment, or if your custom Warzone is a work in progress that you’re not ready to share with the community yet.

A word about Killzone Shadow Fall multiplayer network structure and colorblind support:

  • Q: What is Killzone Shadow Fall’s multiplayer network structure like?

A: Killzone Shadow Fall has dedicated servers hosted in various regions around the world. These servers do not run the logic of the game – they only act as a hub between the clients, forwarding network traffic from one player in game to all other players in game. This allows people with a slower connection or strict firewall settings to play without issues. Almost all logic relating to you (e.g. moving, shooting and taking damage) runs on your local PS4, with only a very small portion of the game logic (i.e. mission/scoring logic) running on the ‘session master’, one PS4 in the game selected for its connection quality.
  • Q: Will Killzone Shadow Fall offer colorblind support?

A: Killzone Shadow Fall will have colorblind support options that can be activated from the options menu.

Finally, the recent Season Pass announcement generated some confusion, so we’d like to clear that up:

  • Q:If multiplayer map packs are free, what is the Season Pass for?A: The Killzone Shadow Fall Season Pass entitles you to:- an online co-op expansion pack that introduces a brand-new horde mode for up to 4 players- three arena map packs for use with the online co-op expansion pack, and- two additional multiplayer expansion packs that will be detailed at a later date. The expansion packs and map packs covered by the Season Pass do not include maps for Killzone Shadow Fall’s built-in multiplayer mode – as we’ve said before, such maps will be released for free so as not to fragment the online community.

Killzone: Shadow Fall is set to be an exclusive launch title for the PlayStation 4 come November.

  • Raymond Featherston

This game already looked awesome, and now it has dedicated servers too! Just take my money already!

  • FightClub

Dedicated servers plus 60 fps and 1080P. Now this is how you treat your fans.

    • XFistsClenchedX

It’s really more like P2P if you actually read the article. There is a host and your PS4 does pretty much everything. The server is just there for scoring and the state of the map.

      • CoDforeveralone

“they only act as a hub between the clients, forwarding network traffic from one player in game to all other players in game.”

Maybe you need to read the article. Network traffic means Multiplayer playing.

“This allows people with a slower connection or strict firewall settings to play without issues.”

You would not be able to do this with P2P ever.

    • Aria68

WHAT !? DEDICATED SERVERS ?! IMPOSSIBLE !!!! ONLY MICROSOFT HAVE THE THE TECHNOLOGY AND CAPACITY TO PROVIDE CLOUD AND DEDICATED SERVERS! I DON’T BELIEVE THIS!

      • CoDforeveralone

So true. It is like when Activision said Ghosts will have dedicated servers for XB1 because it can only be done on that sustem. LMFAO. DICE provides dedicated servers on all platforms. Way to go Activision for showing what company has got there Money dick up your ass farther.

        • QwietStorm

          lol funny ass name

    • dpg70

Yeah, I don’t get true dedicated servers from reading that.

“Almost all logic relating to you (e.g. moving, shooting and taking damage) runs on your local PS4, with only a very small portion of the game logic (i.e. mission/scoring logic) running on the ‘session master’, one PS4 in the game selected for its connection quality.”

They can shine it up all they want, but that’s P2P.

      • M8NTIS

        Isn’t Chris Hansen
        chasing you at the moment?

  • MegaMan3k

Client side hit detection? Uh oh.

    • swipe_06

A lot of gamers won’t like it, but server side is the past, and it won’t return for a good reason.

To make it short, server side needs lag compensation, which involves rewinding the time. Source engine does that, but it only rewinds player hitboxes to my knowledge. With all these dynamic objects and whatnot these days, its increasingly hard to implement server side, if its even possible, while client side is simple and works “perfectly” if done right.

      • XFistsClenchedX

Client side uses lag compensation too. The system they’re talking about doing in Killzone SF sounds more like P2P than dedicated servers, since most everything is handled by your PS4 and someone hosts the match.

        • swipe_06

Client side hit detection always compensates for lag cause the way it works.

          • XFistsClenchedX

If you read the article, the Killzone approach is between P2P and dedicated servers leaning heavily to the P2P side. For instance, there will still be a host machine like in P2P and everything pretty much runs on your own PS4 like in P2P. The server is just there to keep track of scores and stuff. Probably similar to COD.

            • swipe_06

Well, the article says they use dedicated servers. I re read it a few times, but its confusing and too vague. Im guessing that the mission / scoring part is local to one client due to custom missions. IDK. Guerrilla might release some publications about it, but it seems like quake 3 to me.

            • XFistsClenchedX

The article says they use dedicated servers. People who saw that article and work in networking say it’s proxy servers.

  • dieger

    id rather have 32 players and 30fps then 60fps and 24 players…

    • swipe_06

Ditch those 24 drones, and replace them with players.

      • QwietStorm

That’s exactly what I said in the Q&A. Killzone 2 had 32 players. After that craptastic KZ3 with 24 players, I thought PS4 would bring back a higher player count for sure.

        • HelghastUser

I think alot of us at the forums hoped that they would’ve returned to the 32 player count with KZ:SF but unfortunately they decided to stick to KZ3s count…

    • MegaMan3k

I’d rather have 32 players and 60fps and reduced “graphics”

      • Aria68

32 players for killzone maps is just tooooooooooooo much! believe me, i played killzone like forever! i know! 24 max, for smaller map maybe 16 …

        • dieger

……..in 32 player matches in KZ2 it never felt crowded

    • SangheiliSpecOp

I’d rather have 32 players and 60fps and epic graphics. Make it happen developers!

      • dieger

haha from what ive heard SF is having a hard time even keeping 60fps at the moment XD

    • James Mulhall

Erm, why? Too many players just leads to a cluster fuck of no skill deaths that you can’t do ANYTHING about. That’s like playing Counter Strike with 20+ players in the game..

      • dieger

it worked perfect with killzone 2 and was never cluttered. also killzone is nothing like CS

        • James Mulhall

I know. But I’m pretty sure the maps aren’t going to be as big as KZ2′s was. Can you imagine 32 players on KZ3 maps? It would just be silly.

          • dieger

another reason why SF will suck ass

            • XFistsClenchedX

I think it will suck because when I watch campaign gameplay, it looks super boring. The multiplayer just looks uninspired.

            • Raymond Featherston

The single player may look boring to you, but I have played all of them and the story is enticing to me. You were talking about TF and how good it is below, but here you say KZ has a boring story when TF doesn’t have one at all.

            • XFistsClenchedX

Titanfall has story elements. However, Titanfall is an online-only, multiplayer-only game so it doesn’t need a story just like Battlefield 2 didn’t need a story. Anyways, I’m not talking about the story. The gameplay in the singleplayer portion of Killzone SF looks boring as hell.

            • Raymond Featherston

Story is a large part of almost any single player experience,so to separate those like they are separate categories seems wrong.

See I am one of those people who requires there be a story, and the fact that TF only has “story elements” is a deal breaker for me well that and the near requirement to jump/platform. Even on CoD and BF I play the story first and the MP is just icing on the cake. there is no excuse to have some sort of full fledged story, even MMO and Shooter esque MMO’s manage to have a story and they are online/MP only.

It may look boring to you, but it looks great to a lot of people also. Please stop with your “I think it, so it most likely applies to most people” logic because frankly it makes no sense especially when you are the highest level of fanboy, like you are.

            • i see dumb people

              Super xbox blower spotted.

            • CoDforeveralone

Microsoft Blower Spotted. Need a cruise missile on this guy pronto.

  • Aria68

Bitches and Gentleman, BEHOLD! The most graphically intense and sexiest first person shooter of all time is coming …

  • Aria68

I hope they return the Mechs to bitch slaps the Mechs in Titanfalls, we all know Killzone had the Mechs in it’s multiplayer WAY BEFORE Titanfalls …

    • XFistsClenchedX

The difference is that Titanfall is actually fun.

      • Aria68

Might be OR Might not be … NO ONE PLAYED IT YET! in a fps game, Mech might be something to fool around a bit, but is it fun for ever to sit in mech ?! shooting around has been fun in fps for many years and never get boring, but siting in a Mech might might be attractive at first, however it’ll get normal after a while, don’t get over existed about something you don no !!! If TF has a Mech, Battlefield has Tank/Smaller Tank/Jeep/Jet/Heli/Motor … Pretty all sorts of vehicles, it is fun to use them %10 of the time u play BF but at the end of the day, it is a FPS and most of the fun is when u run around with your guns and shoot people …

        • XFistsClenchedX

Plenty of people have played Titanfall’s demo and everyone agrees that it has zero competition. Killzone was called a standard shooter.. meaning, generic.

          • Aria68

Well im not disagree with you! For me Killzone is the way to enjoy a Call of duty type of shooter with much better graphics. It serves it’s purpose as it is still a run n gun game. TF can be good at starts but how is that last and how much of longevity it will have, it’s a question! a game that costs you $60 without a single campaign, i’d say it’s abit too much to ask! and the game shooting mechanics seems like a Call of duty without something very important from Call of duty, called “Killstreak” like or not, that is one of the main thing in COD, they add up an agile rebot and ability to jump around! but for how long, one can enjoy sitting and shooting in a robot! the animations and all are cool! but after 6-7 months! will it have the same constant fun as in Call of duty ? or Battlefield ? That’s my point!

          • Raymond Featherston

Yes because the the opinions of the few people who played BOTH demos automatically equates to fact, right? You call Killzone 4 boring yet you have never played it, but instead you take the opinions of others and turned it into an ill informed opinion for yourself. Seeing has how you are takiing other people’s word for it on a game that is not even out yet you must also be one of those idiots who makes buying choices based off reviews, because you are applying that same stupid principle by judging this game at this point.

          • CoDforeveralone

Lets see. A game with Mechs and COD weapons with future skins and the game has zero destruction in environments even with these powerful mechs. Sounds pretty generic to me.

Imagine Mechs in Frostbite 3 destruction. Enough said. As soon as Dice does another 2142 on Next gen this series will be a afterthought.

      • James Mulhall

Yet you haven’t even played it yet..

        • XFistsClenchedX

People who have played it found it to be a generic shooter. If you watch gameplay videos of the game, you can see how generic it is.

      • Raymond Featherston

“Fun” is subjective, TitanFall seems to platformer-ish for my taste. You have not played wither yet so you cannot say one is fun or not, and before you say it you cannot make a good judgement about any game just by watching it especially when they are not quite completed. You can not definitively say something is not fun, it may not be fun to you but you cannot prove for 100% fact that it is not fun for everybody. For that matter you cannot definitively prove that TitanFall is fun as I am sure there will be some people who dislike it.

You should really stop with your “I’m always right” and one sided crap, because you seeming to believe that you are always right and that your opinion is always fact makes you seem a fool.

        • That guy you might know

He just can’t accept anything that has a PlayStation label on it. His logic is pretty much: “If it has a PS logo on it, its obviously bad.” Then tries to claim he isn’t a fanboy but goes on as the biggest fanboy here.

Any REAL gamer would accept all of the current gaming consoles, regardless of company. Game isn’t even out yet, and he’s bashing it like he’s personally played it and had a terrible experience. Then he hears people say Titanfall is pretty fun and he just assumes its better than everything out there.

Overall, he’s a sorry excuse for a gamer. Even most fanboys have some sense, and can at least say whats good on the opposing side.

        • CoDforeveralone

Titanfall is COD with Mechs nothing more and nothing less. Also the guy who designed the mech in District 9 needs to sue Respawn for stealing his ideas for the Titanfall Mechs. Just saying.

  • XFistsClenchedX

I don’t know what you guys are so excited about. This is more like P2P than dedicated servers. Did anyone bother to read it?

Almost all logic relating to you (e.g. moving, shooting and taking damage) runs on your local PS4, with only a very small portion of the game logic (i.e. mission/scoring logic) running on the ‘session master’, one PS4 in the game selected for its connection quality.

So your PS4 handles everything, except mission and scoring logic and there is a host. That’s nothing to be excited about.

    • WarBroh

      FUD from xbox kid

      • XFistsClenchedX

It’s not FUD. The guy literally says that in the article. Did you just read the title of the article and not the content?

      • XFistsClenchedX

Q: What is Killzone Shadow Fall’s multiplayer network structure like?

A: Killzone Shadow Fall has dedicated servers hosted in various regions around the world. These servers do not run the logic of the game – they only act as a hub between the clients, forwarding network traffic from one player in game to all other players in game. This allows people with a slower connection or strict firewall settings to play without issues. Almost all logic relating to you (e.g. moving, shooting and taking damage) runs on your local PS4, with only a very small portion of the game logic (i.e. mission/scoring logic) running on the ‘session master’, one PS4 in the game selected for its connection quality.

        • CoDforeveralone

Hey dumbass you would not be able to have a enjoyable game with strict firewall settings or Nat issues so this is more Dedicated servers than crap p2p. Dedicated servers you can play and talk to everybody even with strict Nat or slower internet. The reason BF plays so well.

P2P if you have strict Nat or Firewall settings you are not going to have a great experience.

    • PuddingAuxRais1ns

I hate to say it but he’s right. From the way that they word it, it seems like the only thing dedicated servers handle in this game are scoreboards, while everything else is handled on someones PS4, in the same fashion as CoD and halo, which doesn’t make any sense. Why not run all logic on dedicated servers?

  • T-51B

Anyone want to clan up for this shit. I’ve already begun gathering people.

  • i see dumb people

Im dumb i suck my toes!!!

  • Johnny Neat

I wonder if dropping it to 720p would have helped with the frame rates.? Anyone know?

  • Dire Sins

I love Killzone and was deciding on ps4 for obvious reasons but the simple fact I have been neglected by Sony and Guerrilla games on my concerns with the game I may have to change allegiance. I have been asking for a while for the company to add an audio option to turn off the annoying and game ruining kill confirm jingle noise that blots out every other noise with it’s obnoxiously loud chime. All I need is for that simple request to be granted and with ps4 I will stay.
