Destiny’s The Dark Below DLC Will Offer Free Updates For Non Buyers Too

Some content in Destiny’s upcoming DLC, The Dark Below, will be made available for free to everyone when it launches later this December, Bungie announced today in its latest Weekly Update.

Those with Destiny’s Expansion Pass or who purchase the DLC separately for $19.99 will get the full deal, including all this:

  • 3 Story missions featuring new enemies and encounters in the Cosmodrome and Moon
  • Tower Character and Vendor, Eris, featuring new Quests, Bounties, and rewards
  • Exclusive Legendary Weapons and Armor
  • New Exotic Weapons
  • “Will of Crota” Strike
  • “Crota’s End” Raid
  • 3 Crucible Maps: Pantheon, Skyshock, and The Cauldron
  • Maximum Light Level increase to 32

But those who decide not to opt-in will still benefit from these updates, Bungie said:

  • Some new Weapons and Armor
  • New Daily Bounties
  • Five additional Bounty slots

Later in the update, Bungie community manager David “DeeJ” Dague shined some light on the new story telling techniques that will be employed in the new DLC.

“Quests are a new storytelling mechanism that we’re using in the Dark Below,” he explained. “They are multistage tasks that culminate in a reward, similar to the Exotic Bounties you may have experienced. Unlike Exotic Bounties, the Quests in the Dark Below can be completed by players who are solely focused on the cooperative story content of The Dark Below.

“For example, one Quest creates a continuous chain of multiple tasks that culminates in the ‘Will of Crota’ Strike. Another may simply ask you to return to Earth to take down the surging Hive threat.”

“This new way of storytelling in Destiny is a bit experimental in nature. We’ve seen players spending a lot of time in the Tower, and we’ve heard loud and clear that players would like more unique gear and additional Bounties. Eris is one part storyteller, one part Tower Vendor, and tens parts creepy.”

According to Dague, more details on upcoming The Dark Below content will be unveiled in the weeks ahead, including new updates to the base game.

The Dark Below launches December 9.

So we’re paying 20 dollars for some little text bubbles, spawn triggers, and access to areas we already ‘have’.

    Teehee Lmfao this game lmfao

  • Mr Frags

$20 for that? That’s it? Not much content for the price, and a significant portion of it is held back for Xbox players as well. No thanks.

It’s sad Bungie’s own games (Halo: MCC) will take me away from their new title.

    • NinoBr0wn

      Sad or ironic?

      • Mr Frags

        Both, really.

    • Daniel

significant portion? Yes a strike is a big deal but that isn’t a significant portion. If the raid was missing then yeah buuuut. The current PS4 exclusive strike blows anyway.

      • http://www.facebook.com/datkidfromawendaw Clay Johnson

Considering the DLC is 3 missions, one strike and one raid with rewards tied to such, aside miscellaneous gear, that strike is pretty important considering it’s basically story specifically related to the enemy types and they

  • Deciver95

Everyone complains about this, then buys the DLC for cod for the same price for four maps? Hipsters these days

    • MrMultiPlatform

$20 & $15 are not the same price. FAIL

      • Deciver95

Ah, Mr. Cynicism, always a pleasure.

And I know this may be hard to comprehend, but there are other countries outside of the US. One in particular is called AUS-TRA-LIA, and in that country COD Map packs are 20 AUS-TRA-LIAN Dollars, the same price of Destiny dlc .

        FAILLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL.
Lol, soz, just wanted to see what it’s like to act on your level :)

        • MrMultiPlatform

You’re a special kinda stupid aren’t you? Yet again $20 & $15 are not the same. Love how I get you so mad over my comments. Keep dancing the good dance puppet.

          • IceKoldKilla

I checked the Australian PS Store and CoD map packs costs $14,99 and the Destiny DLC costs $19,99. So you were right but why do you feel the need to upvote your own comment? That’s stupid. Do you need people to see that people are with you? No need. Facts and proof will. I just proved you were right. No need to upvote your own comment.

            • Mr. Cynicism ;)

              Cause i’m awesome.

    • Spectre01N7

I bought the dlc with the limited edition. I learned my lesson.

    • Mr Frags

You’re assuming everybody who complains about this buys CoD DLC.

      That simply isn’t the case.

    • IceKoldKilla

Not same price but I get your point. 4-5 maps for $15/15€ yet for an extra $5/5€ you get much more content. A better comparison is Battlefield which is the same genre and for the same exact price you get a SHIT ton more content. Loads of it! I enjoy both games but BF gives more. Not to mention Premium costs the same as CoD Season Pass and gives you 5 DLC packs instead of 4 with CoD that has only 4-5 maps and maybe a weapon.

    • dieger

well considering how destiny NEEDS a fuckton of content already….and they are pretty much charging $20 for about the same as content COD dlc.

    • J4MES

COD usually has a proven base game where the DLC gives extra content that is worth the money. Destiny’s base game is incredibly shallow and the DLC is merely filling in a few holes of what is a very lackluster product. £50 for Destiny and then having to shell out even more just to complete the game is ludicrous. At least COD has some form of a content-laden title right off the bat.

  • Paul Thomas

Sorry but if there isn’t going to be any new planets and we’re just retreading the same places again then i’ll pass. Thankfully my copy was bought by a friend.

  • Spectre01N7

I’m not really liking this game, a lot of stuff is being held back for nothing. If they put in the content, they can take as long as they want with the dlc and justify the price tag.

  • IceKoldKilla

I’m happy with this. But I’d have to say I got the Limited Edition so I saved money, not to mention I got a full refund and still own it. Aaaah Amazon. Them and their mistakes. Gotta love it. Free Destiny Limited Edition :) So yeah I didn’t really “save” money. Free lol

      !?

  • Just saying

I’m really wondering if they will keep Destiny as it is now and keep adding DLCs for the next 10 years or will they add sequels? I’m only saying that because the current story is so incomplete that it will need more than those 2 upcoming DLCs to end this part of Destiny and move on to Destiny 2. I’m not saying this like I’m supporting it but I want to at least read the story they made for Destiny after the stuff that happened at Bungie.

    • jameslara

They’ve already highlighted the play. Destiny 1, Followed by Two ‘expansions’, and then a sequel, rinse and repeat

      • Just saying

Yeah, I know but that was before they realize that the community is not into the new story they made. I think they need to add more content per DLC to end this sequel right because if they don’t, destiny 2 won’t sell as much as the current one with all the games that are coming out in the next couple of months.

  • cwatz

    No chance id buy this
    1) Same price for less content on xbox.
    2) If you look at the time it takes to develop content, its clear that a lot of this was already finished, or held back to keep a stream of content in the game to keep players active.
    3) Destiny was pretty bad.
    4) Sold it!

I feel after a couple days the dlc will get boring, Destiny lacks the addictiveness of Borderlands. I really really doubt 3 new missions are going to fill some holes of the story, if anything it will add more of them.

    We will see soon enough.

  • Nice

If they would add matchmaking to Raids I would buy this in a heartbeat. Until then they can keep there on Disc DLC.
