Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 Earns Half a Billion in First 24 Hours

Once again, Activision delivers the biggest entertainment launch of the year with Treyarch’s Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, earning more than $500 million worldwide in the first 24 hours.

“With first day sales of over half a billion dollars worldwide, we believe Call of Duty is the biggest entertainment launch of the year for the fourth year in a row,” said Bobby Kotick, CEO, Activision Blizzard, Inc.  “Life-to-date sales for the Call of Duty franchise have exceeded worldwide theatrical box office receipts for ‘Harry Potter’ and ‘Star Wars,’ the two most successful movie franchises of all time.  Given the challenged macro-economic environment, we remain cautious about the balance of 2012 and 2013.”

Eric Hirsberg, CEO of Activition Publishing added, ”Call of Duty has become more than a product people buy, it’s a brand people buy into.  And every November we do more than just the launch of a game, we kick off an annual, unofficial but worldwide phenomenon called the Call of Duty season. I want to thank our incredible team at Treyarch for making an amazing game, everyone at Activision for making this brand a force of nature and our retail partners for their unprecedented support of this franchise. But most importantly I want to thank our millions of fans for their continued support and loyalty and for making us better every day.”

During launch last Tuesday, November 13, more than 16,000 midnight openings at retail stores worldwide were attended. In the world of Twitter, Black Ops 2 became the trending topic in 23 cities worldwide in the first 24-hours of release.

Great work on black ops 2 Treyarch.

  • StealthShot24

They definitely should beat MW3′s record of $1 billion in 26 days.

Maybe now they will spend some money on upgrading there outdated engine and switch to dedicated servers!!

    • http://www.facebook.com/thomas.huggins.7 Thomas Huggins

And maybe Battlefield fans will quit reading CoD articles and trolling. In a perfect world…

      • http://twitter.com/paulinacio91 Paul George Inacio J

LOL I play COD and BF3, there is law saying I have to like one or the other

        • http://www.facebook.com/thomas.huggins.7 Thomas Huggins

Haha c’mon now… You rarely have anything good to say about CoD and always talk about how great BF3 is. There’s a difference between being critical and trolling :)

          • http://twitter.com/paulinacio91 Paul George Inacio J

I love BF3 and still like to get my COD on since I use to be a huge fan before BF3 and played a crap ton of BO1 on xbox and played it the other day for old times sake =) I am still a little skeptical on buying BOII.. maybe after these problems get sorted I will buy it for PS3

            • http://www.facebook.com/thomas.huggins.7 Thomas Huggins

Eh, it’s a slightly improved MW3. Maps are small as hell and play fast as shit. I’m hoping the DLC produces more open maps.

            • http://twitter.com/paulinacio91 Paul George Inacio J

I didnt bother buying MW3 after all the bad feedback. I guess they wanted more smaller maps since how popular Nuketown is but Iove slighlty more open maps even tho I do love Nuketown from BO1

            • http://www.facebook.com/thomas.huggins.7 Thomas Huggins

I’ve been having that problem with Black Ops 2. I just chalk it up as lag and suffer through it.

            • http://twitter.com/paulinacio91 Paul George Inacio J

lol That is what I blame it on since I cant think of anything else it could be

      • Jason

Or people would stop assuming that people are “BF Fans” when they need to face the facts that Next gen is coming and Treyarch/infinity ward need to start on a new engine to test the waters like everyone else because if they use the same engine for next gen… you can kiss COD goodbye! With that being said YES BLOPS2 looks allot better with upgraded bloom lighting and texture packs that enhance the ageing engine, and the direction treyarch has taken COD is fine with me and is better but that won’t help if they can’t get their game running right. They DO NEED dedicated servers! I didnt even know they didn’t have them!? A game as big as this is, NEEDS dedicated servers!

I frequent this site enough to know the regular’s preferences. He happens to prefer BF so I enjoy messing with the dude and now you’ve gone and ruined the fun!

      • mechblade

But Cod game engine is outdated. In CoD 1 they use heavily modified id Tech 3. With CoD 2 they redesigned heavily modified id Tech 3 for use on next generation (this generation) and they rename it IW 2.0. Now every year they modified it year after year.

        • http://www.facebook.com/thomas.huggins.7 Thomas Huggins

Oh really? Is the sky also blue and the grass is green (mostly)? *note sarcasm* I know that CoD’s engine is old and I could care less. A game does not have to be super realistic for me to enjoy it. As long as everything works as it should, I’m fine.

          • anonn

            So you COULD care less.

            • http://www.facebook.com/thomas.huggins.7 Thomas Huggins

              Or I could care more…

            • http://www.facebook.com/psyber.kayos Psyber Kayos

              Wouldn’t that be contradictory?

            • http://www.facebook.com/thomas.huggins.7 Thomas Huggins

              Sarcasm, sir.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1178896761 Tim Johnson

you dont need to be a battlefield fan to know that cod needs this in the next game

        • http://www.facebook.com/thomas.huggins.7 Thomas Huggins

Holy shit… I say one sarcastic comment and get twenty responses. Yes, I hope the rumors are true and IW is using a next-gen engine for their next game, but if they’re not, it’s not a deal breaker for me.

  • Jason

Nice! But I think Halo 4′s earning are a little more impressive…

  • http://twitter.com/IMojammer MattW

The untold story is that MW3 sold more in the first 24 hours: 9.3 million copies versus between 7 and 8 million for BO2.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1178896761 Tim Johnson

you’ve also got to remember that mw3 damaged cod’s reputation by revealing how repetitive their games have been

      • http://www.facebook.com/brandon.griffin.3348 Brandon Griffin

You want to know what damaged COD’s rep? MW2. Sure, it made the game heaps more popular, but it also made the game the unbalanced, often bullshit garbage it is now. I love Call of Duty, but even I know they’re far from the greatest games out there.

  • http://www.facebook.com/thomas.huggins.7 Thomas Huggins

I don’t remember Activision thanking IW for MW3… Guess we weren’t the only ones who knew it was sub-par for a CoD.

  • kyuubi_clone

he forgot to thank all the review sites they paid for favourable reviews too.
