Battlefield 4 – Operation Metro and Caspian Border Most Likely to Be Remade in Second Assault DLC

Fan-favorite Battlefield 3 maps like Operation Metro and Caspian Border might be sneaking their way into Battlefield 4 via the game’s recently announced expansion, Second Assault.

As the expansion’s description reads on the official website, “This Premium expansion pack will feature four of the most fan-favorite maps from Battlefield 3, redesigned to take advantage of our advanced Frostbite 3 engine and enhanced to include new multiplayer features from Battlefield 4.”

Of course, no mention is made of what maps will be returning, but core gameplay designer Alan “Demize99″ Kertz has a few clues.

On a Reddit thread centered around Battlefield 4′s Second Assault DLC, Kertz mentioned that “Metro and Caspian are runaway favorites.”

In a recent poll brought to my attention by YouTuber xFactor, 6,655 voters have determined the following as the most popular Battlefield 3 maps (as of Tuesday, June 25 at 1:50pm PST):

Screen Shot 2013-06-25 at 1.55.51 PM

If DICE were to stick to strictly Battlefield 3 vanilla maps, we would most likely see the return of Grand Bazaar, Caspian Border, Seine Crossing and Operation Metro, rebuilt in the Frostbite 3 engine for Battlefield 4.

What do you guys think? Would you like to see those four maps remade in Frostbite 3? Woud you like to see some of the DLC maps, like Epicenter or Strike at Karkand thrown into the mix as well?

Battlefield 4: Second Assault is coming to the Xbox One first sometime after Battlefield 4 launches on October 29.

Big thanks to xFactor for the tip. Check out his video below:

  • James Mulhall

    Operation Metro.. smh.

    • Dirtknap

Yes! If some sort of well designed mash up could be achieved it would be amazing. As you referenced, when factoring in the variables that could achieved via destruction 4.0 it would make for some dynamic gameplay.

    • loner

That’s actually a really interesting idea. This might open up Metro for vehicle play as well. And it would leave room for one more map in the DLC.

Personally, aside from Caspian, Metro, Bazaar and Seine I’d also like to see Karkand and Wake Island.

Wake Island is a great map, but they borked it up badly in BF3 due to horrible balance so I’m not surprised it didn’t receive as many votes. With naval warfare being introduced, as well as the fact that Wake Island has been in almost every BF game ever, it really should be given another chance in BF4.

    • Ryupyroa

Go work for Dice. Please for the love of everything Battlefield get a job there!

    • dpg70

      You just blew my mind

    • oofy

You, sir, should get into game design.

      • James Mulhall

If I was a game designer at DICE then BF4 wouldn’t be what it is currently.. I’d remove Commander as I find random deaths infuriating. I’d change the med kits so they’d have to be held in your hand so you can’t shoot when healing yourself and nearby team mates, you’d also only have a certain amount of health in the med kit and when it runs out someone has to throw you and ammo box for it to refill. Support would be changed back to the medic and the defibs would have a cool down timer before you’d be able to use them again. Tanks and vehicles in general would have a certain amount of ammo in them and if you want to refill then you have to go back to base and I’d also add Arica Harbor from BC2.. because the map is amazing. Oh and the game would actually be colourful.

        • Joseph

I only agree with you on the colourful part. If you get a job there you show those fuckers some colouring pens. All those other ideas just sound messy.

          • oofy

So his design certificate is revoked? :)

          • James Mulhall

To be honest, most of my ideas have already been in olders Battlefield games and they always worked well.

  • tanile

Since Frostbite 3 looks almost identical to Frostbite 2, I could care less about getting the maps remade in the Frostbite 3 engine. If they add huge levolution elements and actually redesign the maps, I might be excited. However, I do not want them to continue doing this for other map packs as well. I want new maps for the remaining dlcs!

    • eBunny

I’m almost certain this will be the only DLC with remade maps.

    • Ramp Lion

This DLC will not be worth a single penny. B2K was worth it because BF2 didn’t have Destruction 2.5 (aka enhanced destruction). All these BF3 maps just get an upgrade. The ONLY way it will be worth something is if they went the non-CoD route (cough cough CoD4 maps in MW2) and remade the entire maps with levelution and such.

    • pot51e

How much less could you care?

  • eBunny

I’m fine with Operation Metro and Caspain Border as long as they redesign Metro, since Caspian is pretty memorable. Other than that though I’d perhaps like to see Azadi Palace or perhaps another Aftermath map as well as a snow map like Sabalan Pipeline or Alborz Mountains. Ziba Tower would be cool as well, but I feel like they’ve already got a lot of close quarters combat and microdestruction in BF4 anyway, but on a bigger scale like we saw in Siege of Shangai.

  • http://Youtube.com/user/lallyofthevalley Nemesis_96

So, the two dullest maps in the game? -_-
Why not Bazaar? Even I like that and I hate BF3!
Same goes for Damavand. That jump was the highlight of the whole damn game xD

    • Katana67

They’re all the same, dull, linear and not really in the tradition of Battlefield. Save for Caspian, but, I really didn’t like Caspian at all (mostly because it’s pretty unimaginative and most of the fighting takes place on a small 25% slice of the map).

Any of the B2K maps would be more than welcome in my opinion, but they’re BF2 maps.

Bandar Desert is up there as well, Firestorm and Kharg were okay too.

      • http://Youtube.com/user/lallyofthevalley Nemesis_96

Well, Rush and conquest is what BF is all about, and rush is linear, so it kind of does make sense. Besides, they’re both good all purpose maps

        • Katana67

Conquest and Rush is what BF is about, in that order. There is nothing “all purpose” about Metro, it’s just a clusterfuck. Zero imagination compromised by idiotically camped corners. I’m all for holding/defending/camping, but this is just a poorly designed map (which was also watered down from Beta). It’s the Nuketown of Battlefield, and yes, that is meant as a negative.

Seine Crossing and Grand Bazaar -may- fit that definition, because there’s a little more imagination to where the flags are on Conquest. Rush, it’s pretty hard to screw up Rush, but that doesn’t mean the maps play well on that gametype. Maps like Oasis from BC were linear on Rush, but still offered many different ways of affecting the battlefield rather than just zerg rushing up escalators.

However, Seine Crossing and Grand Bazaar are two more examples of them trying to endorse their poorly worked CQC. They aren’t Battlefield maps, they aren’t unique to Battlefield. Now, there’s nothing particularly wrong about that, but DICE should recognize the focus of their game and the traditions which have made it both successful and unique (i.e. large combined-arms matches designed with LARGE and varied maps in mind).

          • http://Youtube.com/user/lallyofthevalley Nemesis_96

I was talking about Damavand and Bazaar when I said all purpose…
They’re fast paced, but with flank routes, and they have good choke points to focus the action.
Yesh, Metro is boring and crappy

          • oofy

I love Seine for all the rubble dropping I can do on unsuspecting enemies.

  • Katana67

    Please god no…

  • http://Youtube.com/user/lallyofthevalley Nemesis_96

    Hold on,
    “NOSE HAIR CANALS”????????

    • Timothy David Medric

      Haha auto correct fail

      • Ramp Lion

Nope. That’s what xfactor calls it.

    • theplantain

if you go on battelog that’s what most people call it

    • TriguyRN

      Are you referring to xfactor?

  • Laser0pz

Tehran Highway would be the only really good map for a FB3 remake. The whole overpass could have been levelled and completely changed the playing field.

    • WarBroh

The least played of all the vanilla maps? no just no, its dreadfull boring

  • WarHero

If they indeed are making a remake of Operation Metro..REMOVE THE BLUE TINT

  • zacflame

fuck, if they obey what is simply on the chart, the first DLC will suck.

first of all, wake island is mandatory as a battlefield classic map.

secondly, the next map should be either operation firestorm, caspian border, or kharg island.

third, operation metro has become everyone’s favorite infantry map in BF3, so it almost has to be brought back.

finally, the last map should be between any armored kill or endgame map.

    • WarBroh

The “first DLC” will have no BF3 maps, genius.

      • http://mp1st.com/ David Veselka

Dude, you gotta stop being so un-delightful! :)

      • BOSS jediZOHAN

          • BOSS jediZOHAN

            I realize that. My Bad

            • Ryupyroa

You guys are all wrong. Battlefield 4 is getting Call of Duty DLC maps. With dogs. Lots of dogs.

            • BOSS jediZOHAN

You sir, get a cookie for making me laugh!

        • http://mp1st.com/ David Veselka

You too! Stop being so un-delightful.

Bunch of un-delightful naughty boys, I tell you.

          • BOSS jediZOHAN

            SCREW EVERYONE!!!!!!

  • Timothy David Medric

I don’t even think there’s four maps I liked from the vanilla.

  • Joe bob the great

    Kharg Island please!

    • WarBroh

+1 for you. I think Kharg may be my overall favorite BF3 map. Caspian is pretty but kinda small and not very well layed out. Case in point RU snipers can camp the hill at their spawn and snipe US spawn all day long.

      • JustinD

        If you have an aimbot

  • Joseph

I like this a lot! Bazaar should definitely be there ahead of Caspian imo

    • Asmitty56

      Uhg why..

  • Tyler Dominick

Metro… yuck.. WHY do people like to play in a line with no destruction?

    • Dirtknap

I concur, though I would like to see what could be changed up with the upgraded destruction model. On the other hand, the last thing BF4 needs is all the rent-a-servers running Metro 24/7 9000x tickets.

      • Asmitty56

Hey, add an above metro-urban area, and a below sub system or outer corridors and I’ll be happy. Just make it so it’s not a choke point. Heck if the made an area above metro they can make it a 5+ flag map with land and air vehicles.

        • Dirtknap

Agreed, good call! This is why I liked James’ suggestion so much.

    • Just saying

It’s the only map of its kind. I didn’t get the same feeling while playing any other maps at all. Metro is just about infantry combat with no vehicles and 3 different parts on RUSH (2 on CQ).

    • WarBroh

      Because CoD

  • Jerry Kehr

How is Kharg island not a favorite!? Especially with the naval assault coming to bf4.

    • Asmitty56

This right here. Noshair Canal wouldn’t be bad either. Just make it so you can knock down cranes, sink barges, and collapse the warehouses and maybe increase the size and add more canals for naval warfare.

  • MrClean

Wake Island was listed twice. It got 2194 votes total.

    • Ramp Lion

      Second wake is Damavand Peak

  • uwantSAM0A

    Metro? flash bang f*ckfest incoming.

  • vapor220

Recycling isn’t just good for the environment.

  • Darkthunder

    Newsflash!

Operation Metro was a “runaway favorite” because of all the high-ticket servers running that map 24/7. It was the easiest map to get large amounts of points on, in the shortest amount of time.

In other games, that would be called an ‘exploit. According to DICE, it’s a ‘favorite’. *sigh*

    • pot51e

To be fair, Metro was the most played map WAY before rentaserver was introduced. And even then, it falls somewhere short of the points-fest of the CQ maps. Now THEY are high point maps.

I loved Metro, then hated it, then accepted it for what it was. Always a good warm up map, and a fun start before I get down to seriousness elsewhere.

  • MrSunshine

He later tweeted that he never said that they could return in Battlefield 4.

https://twitter.com/Demize99/status/349163810461999104 Hopefully they know that just because a map is popular doesn’t mean it’s a good map.

    • http://mp1st.com/ David Veselka

Hopefully he knows we’re not saying that’s what he said, but that we’re just putting two and two together, making predictions :)

  • Kyle Jackson

What a waste of time, the maps are ok, but let’s move on. Granted Back to Karkand was pretty good, but it had a 7 year gap ffs.

  • Delta8A

    Vanilla blows. Gimme Alborz Mountains!

    • WarBroh

Infantry scrubs and metro whores all hate that map though – whining its too far between points and they’re fodder for vehicles and aircrasft. Hard to find an alborz server with more than 2 people on it.

    • theplantain

      lol, nope

  • zakrocz

I was reading another interview with Dice where the Dice guy said he would love to redo some BC2 maps for BF4.
    Panama Canal anyone? :)))

Will we see remakes of the most popular maps?

That’s something we’re doing. There are a few maps we’ve picked, we’re doing some re-work on them, adding a BF4 flavour. So that’s coming to the Xbox One first. Some of the old maps are really good. And especially going back to BC2, I would love to see more of the BC2 maps.

    http://www.edge-online.com/features/inside-battlefield-4-multiplayer-dice-on-destruction-squads-commander-mode-and-more/

    • jj16802

I feel that most of the BC2 maps (Except for Heavy Metal.) are probably a bit too small for BF4 standards…

      • zakrocz

I’m pretty sure if they redone them for BF4 they would expand them for 64 players, though Atacama Desert would probably be fine with 64 players, maybe add a couple of more flags.

  • RoadTripToJalalabad

The BF3 maps haven’t developed any nostalgia for me yet, and I’m currently bored with most of them. BF4 seems to look and play very much like BF3, so running the same maps will feel just like BF3. The additional commander features of BF4 mixed into BF3 maps might be interesting, but IMO not worth the cost of a DLC.

Second Assault, if it is just a minor tweak and repackaging of BF3 maps, should be free. Charging for same old maps is the BS the other guys do.

  • Justin Mckay

first of all wake island is an absolute must for BF4 and two I think they should do two vanilla and two dlc maps one of which must be Strike at karkand :P please :$ but in all seriousness id prefer no maps from bf3 be remade instead use previous battlefield games plenty of maps (still waiting for cambodian incursion to be remade).

    • jj16802

Wake Island is a MUST for BF4. It’s a Battlefield tradition since all the way from BF1942.

  • Ryan M. Bonk

I’d like to see Zatar wetlands, Dragon Vally, Fushe Pass and Road To Jalalabad recreated. Or perhaps some classic 1942 maps like Operation Market Garden redone with the huge ass bridge..

  • Derek

If you port a map over from a previous game into a new game it should be free. Because if you release the mod tools it would be free and in no time flat. But its just a cash grab and for that reason mod tools will be few and far between in this generation.

That being said…they should port Metro into CoD and not BF4 lol. Hated that map with a passion. Pretty much loved all the Karkland maps though.

    • TommyBoy

I both agree and disagree with you. It should be free, you’re right about that, but hell, i would also pay for it because some maps are perfect, am i right?

  • Soldier

Surprise! Everyone wants infantry, smaller based maps instead of the gigantic, boring, sandbox maps that they made. Of course, there are people who enjoy the huge maps in BF and they should be included with a small dosage.

The smaller maps, many of which are showcased in Bad Company 2, are what the community loves from Battlefield. It provides a great medium between vehicles, infantry, and the great gameplay that only Battlefield can bring. Grand Bazaar is the closest to this description in BF3, and Laguna Alta, White Pass, and Arica Harbor come closest from BC2.

Almost everyone wants action, not just running around for 10 minutes finding no one to kill (or while the enemy team camps in their spawn that you can’t even go in).

    • Derek

I think you are confusing what the Xbox360/PS3 community wants and what the PC and soon to be XB1/PS4 wants.

If you have trouble find action on a 64 player map, even Caspian or Nebian or some of the larger maps “you’re doing it wrong” ;).

      • Soldier

As a PC player, i can say that there is a HUGE problem with the larger maps. Either you find no one, or you find people camping in the most random places. Larger player counts is sadly what EA/DICE have resorted to to try and attract players. instead of just promoting a quality game, they have to use gimmicks such as 64 players, commander, “levolution” (the stupidest name I have ever heard for anything), all these types of vehicles, etc.

This is a much deeper rooted problem than just this. EA is conforming to the more casual player base, one that moves onto a new game shortly after playing the previous one. There isn’t even an effort to promote any type of true community that is created off of competitive play.

That is why the only real competitive tournaments for large sums of money have been 5v5 and 8v8 matches on infantry maps only, right? The future of BF does not include oversized maps that frankly 5% of the BF player base even enjoy.

        • Derek

Never once had that issues with any BF game in a full server. Been playing since BF1942. But to each their own I suppose.

        • zakrocz

The very first battlefield game had 64 players so its hardly a new gimmick EA are all of a sudden pushing. The only reason console was capped at 24, as has been said many times by Dice, is because until Xbox One and PS4, consoles haven’t been powerful enough to run more than 24 player battlefield games with an acceptable performance.

        • jj16802

Commander mode has been a feature since BF2 and core gamers have been asking for it to return since BF3 since neither Bad Company games had it.

    • Asmitty56

Probably because of all the console gamers needing to play the smaller maps. With 64 players the bigger maps with a lot of vehicles will sort things out. Metro and Bazaar are cr#p on either platform and is just a fast way to level up… I my self prefer the maps in the urban setting simply because they offer variety. But I also greatly appreciate Kharg island, Op Firestorm, and Caspian Border.

  • Johnny Lopez

Is it possible for a Wake Island ? Really the only remake map I love.

    • jj16802

Wake Island has been in 1942, BF2, 2142, 1943 and BF3. I don’t see why not. If anything, it has to be in BF4 since it’s a Battlefield tradition.

  • Flare Demon

Metro, Bazaar, Caspian for sure. Now for the last one I either want Kharg or Crossing.

  • Shawn Pearson

i want valprasio from bad company 2 now !!

  • dieger

    fuck this dlc then

  • H’m

No new maps… All i want is the mode ive never played, TITAN!!
    Heard nothing but awsome things

  • http://rmdclan.com/ CmdrVOODOO

Grand Bazaar, Caspian and Metro are 3 of my personal favorites (in that order). I’d like to see all 3 return.

  • Ramp Lion

Here is what I think it should be:
    Caspian Border
    Wake Island
    Firestorm
    Kharg

  • Ryan Schulze

I wouldn’t mind Strike At Karkand, but mostly I want new maps. And no wasted maps like the CQ maps that had one and only one configuration.

    • Asmitty56

I’d like to see CQ maps be more of a factor in larger maps. like have a majority of the flags in CQ space inside of skyscrapers and such. Like 50% CQ flags, 50% long sightlines and vehicle accessible flags.

  • Peter

    Wake brah

  • B_Boss

I saw this on reddit as well guys lol….I love the hate for OpMetro and yet and yet lol….the stats never lie. As I said on redditt, I want a MetroSeine merger…..that would be to die for lol.

    • Asmitty56

Metro underneath, Seine on top, with the outer park and outer café. Hell to the yes!

      • B_Boss

        exactly…omg….please DICE…

    @Demize99
it’s not just that, it’s the fact people (like me) prefer to use L1 and
R1 to aim and fire and devs like you are forcing L2 and R2

    Alan Kertz
    @Demize99

@oldmario The PS3 DS3 had shit triggers. After PS4 people will say “why the fuck did we use R1 and L1?”

    1:45 PM – 25 Jun 2013

That’s what one would definitely call “fighting words”, but coming
from one of the most prominent designers of a major FPS game, I’d say it
holds quite some weight, considering how reliant shooters are on the
quality of the controller. How do you feel about it? Do you agree on the
    triggers of the DualShock 3?

Personally I do… I still remember the dreadful times of playing Gran Turismo 5 with the controller (Before getting my first Driving Force GT),
with my fingers slipping all over those horribly shaped triggers
causing fatigue and eventually pain during endurance races… It looks
like the redesigned DualShock 4 will be a lot easier on our hands, and possibly on our aim. Thank you very much, Sony.

    • Asmitty56

Ehh if you are going the have a “trigger” button (R2), it should be the trigger finger that uses it not the middle finger. But that’s my worthless opinion.

I honestly have gotten so sick of Op Metro, if I’m looking for a server to play on and I see Op Metro is the next map up…I skip that server.

Seine should be one of the four. I just love dropping rubble on people’s heads.

    • Asmitty56

Seine crossing is probably my favorite map (console player). I’d love to be able to collapse the whole sides of building where recon and support players love hiding in. Back to Karkand and especially Sharqi peninsula would be fun too, just bring down all of the building on that map, the smaller buildings, the radio building, the construction sight (along with toppling over the crane), the hotel, Give those stupid bush wookies that sit on top of construction buildings and cranes nothing to hide on ;).

    • Kevin Walters

WTF is going on? I dont want Battlefield 3 maps remade, they are far too
fresh in my mind! In Battlefield 3, they remade maps from Battlefield
      2. So logically, Bad Company 2 maps should be up next. For BF4, DICE
should remake our favorite BC2 maps, bring back the At4, XM8 variants,
      and the mounted turrets.

      • oofy

Well, the Bf3 maps are coming, so I am resigned to that fact. My hope is Seine is in there and the destruction is ramped up.
I thought I read somewhere that the AT4 is in Bf4.

Without doubt, but at that time what we want would be the ability to destroy the entire damn building. Anyways it’s cool for them to widen the entrance of the park to the tunnel and make the map a super linear Metro Conquest Large lol

A – Cafe; B – Ticket Hall; C – Platform; D – Tunnel (Old US Deployment); E – Park (First pair of MCOMs in Rush)

        • B_Boss

Yeah man….I would hope and pray that they let us bring at least 1-2 buildings down minimum lol.

          • AtheistMason

lol there are only 2 buildings in metro that are “complete” (not on the edge of the map), which are the 2 around A.. If they are brought down we will have to fight in smoke and dust lol

Bringing houses down in Metro doesn’t sound like a good plan now. That’s why I think the map doesn’t live up to the name Battlefield…

            • B_Boss

Man dude….bringing down those 2 apartments would be incredible, effectively reducing the high ground advantage, etc. or being able to cave in the roof in the B Flag Lobby by destroying any number of those stone square pillars.

I’d wager that if Metro is included in the DLC, they’ll probably allow the buildings to be leveled or at least one of them and who knows, they would probably add more visuals to the map via buildings, other structures, etc.

How will they change Caspian Border? My guess is that one is not in, just based on its map style.. I would say Metro, Seine, Bazaar, and Karkand will be the maps redone. Only because of what they would offer if you “improved” them for F3 engine..

There is seriously something wrong with anyone who would want to have Metro or Grand Bazaar on BF4… In their current form. Their like elongated CoD maps filled with choke points. If they are in the expansion pack they better Levelutionize the cr#p out of those maps because they need a whole lot more. Maybe for Metro, you could blow away the walls for more corridors AND the floor to some sort of sewage tunnel or more train tunnels, as well as already been stated blow away the roof and have the top of the metro tunnels be like the Alpha side of the map with buildings and such. The big long choke point of death other wise is unacceptable.

For Caspian Border. Maybe relocate the large radio tower to where it will fall over top of the main section of the map where it will actually have an impact on how to travel from one side to the other (maybe across the road between Alpha and Delta) and of course have it so players can trigger the collapse, and for god’s sake improve the sound on that thing, it sounds pathetic when it falls. Another additional option maybe make it so the Commander can over time blow away the top of the hill on Charlie leaving the teams to fight over the rubble inside the crater that was the Charlie hill. Also little things like falling trees killing players and making it difficult to traverse the map.

Seine Crossing, Back to Karkand, or Sharqi Peninsula for the best urban warfare, variety with in the map ( long sightlines on streets, CQ combat, vehicle warfare, and infantry warfare ), and best use of Levelution

  • Asmitty56

Like what Laser0pz said. Haha why not Tehran Highway? Collapse the over pass, the annoying construction buildings, and some of the larger buildings (and the over pass could collapse blocking roads to limit vehicle traffic and help prevent spawn traps. And for f#$%s sake make it an actual NIGHT map not this deep blue tint… The tac light should be a major tactical tool on this map..

The poll is missing Damavand Peak.

Only way metro would be good if they opened it up. It’s to much of a cluster f in the subway. Caspian border a good choice

  • John doe

As a guy who hates Metro with a passion I would like to see it for BF4 actually. Now that they are tweaking the Defib with a cool down there will be no noob Medic trains so it might actually be playable on BF4.

  • jrstryker

Metro could be fun with the HD destruction and if the added more stops and flanking routes. Maybe add a few actual moving trains to the mix…. That would be kind of cool to see some camper get hit with a train coming from behind or using an explosive to derail a train and change the map.

Love Bazaar on rush but don’t think it deserves to be remade. I’d be happy with an update for the B2K maps again (Strike at Karkand and Sharqi Penn.) and maybe Damavand Peak, minus the tunnel stage.

Battlefield is dead to me. I cannot believe they are releasing Battlefield 3 maps as DLC. Why can’t they spend their time actually producing new maps (oh, that’s right, that takes actual time, effort and creativity). And even if we were accept their decision to re-release the old maps why on earth would you re-release BF3 maps. If BF3 was perhaps 7 years old, then perhaps you could consider it, but even then the vanilla BF3 maps (the ones that polled so well in the above article) were generally atrocious (Caspian border was good, Firestorm and Karg Island passable). Why on earth is Metro even being considered for BF4; its an abomination.
