Call of Duty: Ghosts – Dedicated Servers ‘Used on Current-Gen, Next-Gen and PC’, According to IW Head

In a recent update, Infinity Ward executive producer Mark Rubin outlined a few of the improvements the studio is making to online connectivity in Call of Duty: Ghosts when it launches this fall.

Most notable in his Twitter entry was the mention of dedicated servers on “on current gen, next gen and PC” and that Call of Duty: Ghosts will use a “hybrid system of dedicated servers and listen servers.”

He also noted “some great new tech in the matchmaking system that will place players in matches that have the best combined overall connectivity performance.”

Check out Rubin’s full update below:

GHOSTS ONLINE CONNECTIVITY UPDATE: I wanted to give a quick update on some of the work that has been done to improve everyone’s online experience. We’ve already mentioned dedicated servers as part of the overall plan to improve connectivity. Dedicated servers will be used on current gen, next gen and PC with Ghosts. And, in order to make sure that people have the best possible experience regardless of platform, location or connection, Ghosts will be using a hybrid system of dedicated servers and listen servers. So no matter where you are the game will always be trying to give you the best online performance possible. There is also some great new tech in the matchmaking system that will place players in matches that have the best combined overall connectivity performance. Again these are just some of the things that are going into Call of Duty: Ghosts to give players a great online experience. Can’t wait to see you all online.”

We’ve reached out to Rubin for clarification on the prospect of dedicated servers making it to the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4. Other than Rubin’s update, Activision and Infinity Ward have officially confirmed dedicated servers for the Xbox One and PC.

Update

Rubin has clarified that he cannot call out any platforms by name, specifically. Only “current gen next gen and PC.”

    *applause*

    • Craig

      slow clap

  • One point

im thinking about the possibility that dedi servers arent coming to any PS consoles, microsoft are sneaky bastards when it comes to exclusive features

    • Yo Mama

Umm… Didn’t it just confirm that dedicated servers were coming to all platforms, current and next gen?! I mean, unless I’ve lost all reading comprehension.

      • That guy you might know

They were officially confirmed for Xbox and PC. They said next gen but never confirmed anything for PS. So some people assume that it’s not gonna happen, unless they came out and said it will for a fact be on it.

        • Mitch

He basically confirmed it. When someone asked about ps3/ps4, he didn’t deny it. If ps3/ps4 doesn’t get it, why not deny it? And this quote: ”And, in order to make sure that people have the best possible experience regardless of platform,…”

          • That guy you might know

That’s understandable then. They generally come off as extremely sketchy when it comes to non-Xbox players, so as a PS guy, I don’t trust them with this kind of stuff.

            • Mitch

Some guy also asked about Xbox360, he also answered with the ”not talking about any specific platforms”.

      • Johnny Neat

I think PS will eventually get it, but I think PS4 is still working that stuff out so IW wants to play coy.

    • RandomUser2yr29387

Are you illiterate? This basically confirms dedicated serves for ALL PLATFORMS. That means Playstation 3 and 4 as well.

      • One point

        servers*

  • jj16802

    It’s about time!

  • Bobby Owens

The “hybrid” system probably means Listen servers for unranked matches and dedicated servers for ranked. Similar to Gears of War I would presume.

    • awkenney

Doubtful. It probably means that dedicated servers are used for raw communication of game data and listen servers are used by the dedicated server to make on-the-fly adjustments to prediction/ping balancing.

      • Bobby Owens

Maybe. I just wish Infinity Ward and Treyarch both would find the right balance when it comes to Multiplayer. It took almost 8 months to get Black Ops II playable (at least for me). I gave up on MW3 after 8 months of changing my network settings and ISP back and forth to no avail.

Battlefield’s dedicated servers have been awesome for almost it’s whole lifespan.

        • Jake Jeckle

Dedicated servers will change the whole community in COD. People who thought they had skill will have problems and people that has slower internet will finally be on even playing field.
There is people who relied on Lag in COD to do well. This will not be good for them.

          • awkenney

This is not the case. If you’ve ever played Black Ops II on PC, you’d know that the dedicated servers there didn’t fix the issues that people were also experiencing on consoles.

            • Jake Jeckle

Did not know this. Guess there internet coding just sucks then.

        • RandomUser2yr29387

Where the hell are you from? What are you playing on?

I never had any Black Ops 2 problems and I had a shitty 1.5Mb connection back then and I was playing on PS3!

          • Bobby Owens

I am from the hell where they have 30mb connections that get dumbed down for the 1.5mb connections. It’s called lag compensation and it was very bad early on. Many people moved to hardcore but it was there as well, just not as bad.

            • awkenney

On PC most of my former clan mates also moved to hardcore. I simply moved to PS3 where, for me, the issues with lag comp are far less prevalent.

            • Johnny Neat

              Hardcore or GTFO!

            • Jake Jeckle

I do not think this is the case. See I use 4gLte for gaming and it works without a hitch. Now I have got a data counter that counts how much data I am using when I am connected. I can play BF3 for 3 to 4 hours straight and maybe use 80 to 100 MB which leads me to believe that having a faster internet really does not matter. I know BF has dedicated servers which helps but i have played COD with the same result.

I get almost 20MB download and 8 to 9Mb upload with a ping at maybe 30 to 50 which is really good. I am not really sure how the whole internet thing works in games but I read a article long time ago and they said it is a miracle that online gaming even works let alone works perfectly.

I do know after watching my data counter that playing FPS it uses about 150 to 200 KBPS which is crazy low to me.

          • awkenney

The PS3 also plays better for me technically than the PC version. At least hits register far more often.

            • JohnD

The ps3 version of bf3 is better as well.

          • Jake Jeckle

Really a 1.5MB connection is more than enough for online gaming.

            • RandomUser2yr29387

Not if you have family who streams videos and downloads stuff…….anyway I said I didn’t really have major problems on my 1.5mb connection….DID NOT.

  • awkenney

I’d still like to have the option to opt-out of ping balanced games. I mean if they’d go through the trouble of creating a hybrid system they could just as well give the player a checkbox to opt-out of games were the dedicated servers use ping balancing, with a warning that states “only people with fast, reliable Internet connections should use this.” This would have to be spelled out that a player use this feature only at their discretion.

    • Jake Jeckle

Considering a lot of people has shitty internet and not to mention most people has bad Nat types this will never happen. That is why most developers is going dedicated servers. P2P is so old and dated it is stupid to have it in multiplayer games like BF or COD. Imagine BF with P2P servers.

      • awkenney

I’m not implying that P2P is what I want. I’m implying that dedicated servers aren’t enough to fix things like poor hit registration. And since Activision doesn’t seem to be able to fix this with their ping balancing, I’d like to have the option to play on a dedicated server that has no ping balancing, or at least less aggressive ping balancing.

The not too distant past: IW- XBOX this XBOX that XBOX here XBOX there XBOX one XBOX two XBOX red XBOX blue XBOX nick-nack paddy-whack give a dog an Xbone.
Today: IW- we don’t want to mention any platforms……..

    • dieger

but will it be compatible with smart glass?

      • zacflame

I, and PLENTY of hardcore gamers, don’t give two shits about mobile or social integration.

        • Jake Jeckle

Totally agree. The only thing that would be cool is using a tablet to play commander in BF4.

          • betosobreira

So you are not a hardcore gamer because you fall in contradiction to what zacflame said.

        • dieger
        • Mr. Thuggins

Hardcore gamers are not the center of the gaming world. You’re sounding like a PC elitist.

          • http://www.facebook.com/datkidfromawendaw Clay Johnson

They don’t care. They feel that they speak for everyone when they really don’t so much as speak for a majority. 18 up votes does not mean that everyone agrees add a few million to that and then.

    • Aria68

This is bullshit! Only Xbox One and the power of cloud can have this feature!

    • Megaman

      HAHAHAAAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAAHA

  • CoDforever

THE BIGGEST PROBLEM IN COD HAS BEEN FIXED !!!! … well, Improved.

    • matt671

except for the bullshit, like QS/NS, cheaters, hackers, etc

      • James Mulhall

“cheaters, hackers,” Yeah.. I haven’t ran into a hacker in CoD since.. well since World at War when I last played it a year ago. I still play CoD4 on the PS3 and never run into hackers. Cheaters? How are you classified as a cheater in CoD? Every game can have cheaters.

        • matt671

well in my experience I ran into hackers, like infected servers for example and its starting to appear in mw2

          • betosobreira

            Dude not only on MW2 but MW3, BO2, CoD4, WaW and etc…

        • betosobreira

Lucky you. WaW, CoD4, MW3 and BO2 are full of hackers on ps3.

          • James Mulhall

Well then I must be lucky. I haven’t tried WaW in a long time but CoD4 seem hack free, I played MW3 a few months ago and no hacks, I sold BO2 so I wouldn’t know now tbh.

Also, why is my post getting downvoted? What exactly did I do to piss in peoples cornflakes? :/

            • betosobreira

I understand. That’s why I prefer CoD on Xbox 360. I never found hackers there but I know that might exist some over there.

          • paulinacio

Only played COD a few times on PS3 so I cant confirm hackers on it but I can confirm it on Xbox 360 since I have joined my fair share of lobby’s with hacks and you can even find shared videos on BO1 with hackers lol Not sure about any other since I stopped playing with BO1

            • betosobreira

BO1 maybe is full of hackers in both platforms but I play BO2 in Xbox 360 and I haven’t seen any there.

      • CoDforever

What bullshit ? They removed qucikscoping, deathstreaks and created squads for the new/wii U players. I have also never ran into a black ops 2 hacker on ps3 EVER (21 days played).

        • That guy you might know

Balancing is a huge part of it.
MW3 was broken as fuck, BO 2 wasn’t bad.

I’m not too concerned about hackers/cheaters because I can just leave the lobby

          • CoDforever

Do you play on PC ? seriously, I have NEVER seen a hacker in blops 2 on ps3.

            • That guy you might know

              No, PS3

The only time I’ve actually seen hacking or cheating was MW2, and that was once
Black Ops was when Aimbot was popular

          • oofy

            MW3 was broken? How so?

            • That guy you might know

              Everything was so damn imbalanced.
              Weapons, perks.
              Dead man’s hand in general
And when they buffed a weapon, it was too much
Like how the M16 got buffed, good lord it got bad

            • CoDforever

LOL ye i agree, But game was still very much fun as long as you didnt take all your deaths to heart :P

            • That guy you might know

I enjoyed it when everything was fine for the most part, but then it got to the point I was only getting killed by over-powered weapons.

I had my best game in my CoD “career”, before the Juggernaut suit was nerfed to the point of uselessness

            • oofy

Wasteland was a hilarious map. The size and vegetation were a camper’s dream.

              *squints*…is that a…FFFFPPPPPTTT!!!…yup, that’s a sniper.

            • oofy

              I could argue that MW2 was broken-er.

            • That guy you might know

I bet it was, I started playing CoD when Black Ops was announced so I never knew how broken the game really was.

I didn’t get my first nuke in MW2 until MW3 was out xD

            • Jon Cameron

Fun fact: Equipping the M16 with a holographic sight in MW2 made it do more damage.

            • oofy

M16 + Holographic Sight + Stopping Power = my preferred sniper rifle.

            • CoDforever

balancing wise – Dead mans hand, all the other deathstreaks, ACR and MP7, I agree the game was not balanced, but MW3 was till fun. It was the game that made me fully fledged dedicated fan.

        • dieger

wrong! they SAID they removed QS and deathstreaks but we all know you cant trust IW words (fucking last stand BS MW3!) BOWLING YOU BASTARD!!!

        • matt671

sure they have removed qs (its not the first time IW/ activison have lied to us they said they was going to remove last stand from mw3 but it ended up being a death streak instead

    • zacflame

The biggest problem is the community.

      • dieger

        god dont i know it…

      • BadCompany3

With people like you, the worst community is where you belong, battlefield. For one, they can’t let go of call of duty, they had become pathetic douche bags who keep on hating COD. I like Battlefield, I just don’t like the hardcore pin heads and losers who play it such as this permadouche zacflame.

        • zacflame

          Really?
The community is the reason why the devs are forced to make shitty decisions like making the ghost perk only work while moving.
The community is what (usually) makes the game look like it is for ignorant “swag” kids.
Also, there is (usually) nothing wrong with most other game specific game communities, not including Xbox titles, where people get shunned due to being a specific gender and other retarded shit.
Oh, and how could I forget,

          • Angelreborn96

Funniest shit ever in the end of what you said lol and btw you make a great point with everything you said man. Good. And do u have a ps3??

            • zacflame

              Yes.

            • Angelreborn96

Cool, add me? What’s your psn?

      • Johnny Neat

So true… And hit detection, tiny maps, terrible spawning and suspect AI controlled streaks just to name a few, but true.

    • Jake Jeckle

COD players will still find something wrong with dedicated servers. Now that they can not blame it on lag they will find something.

      • Johnny Neat

That’s because there is plenty fundamentally left over in CoD’s DNA to annoy the hell out of anyone trying to enjoy and play straight up. I was at CoD’s beginning and I feel terrible for some reason, loyalty minded I guess, but I had to leave CoD multiplayer for the sake of my sanity.

BF isn’t perfect, but it’s tolerable and fun as all hell 90% of the time (Fuck you dedicated server cheating Admins!). At least I still have CoD’s single player to enjoy, for the most part.

    • Jake Jeckle

It only took them how many years? Meanwhile on BF.

  • NiftyGam3r

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN LEEEEETS GET REAAAAADY TO RUUUUUIMBLEEEE

  • http://rmdclan.com/ CmdrVOODOO

I think we all (those of us with reasoning skills) assumed this was the case based on their “we’re only talking about Xbox One right now” when asked about PS4 back at E3.

  • ELCUCO786

The ONLY reason that he can’t name the platforms is because by including PS 3/4 that would take away from illustrious cloud server feature of the xbox versions. MS has obviously put a muzzle on Mark. You can bet the servers are hitting PS platforms as well.

    • http://rmdclan.com/ CmdrVOODOO

He’s doing the right thing by Activision/IW by saying this because as someone who is getting only a PS4 at release, I’ll now at least consider buying COD. With the number of people buying PS4′s they have to treat those people right if they expect to get their business.

The question I have then is what exactly is MS’s cloud all about if 360, PS3 and PS4 will also have dedicated servers for COD too? I always found their “cloud” thing a little over the top. Now I’m starting to wonder if it’s not completely a marketing thing.

I imagine MS would have liked to have kept this completely on the down-low until November 22nd. Too late, it’s out there now! I’m glad they found a loophole in their contract with MS.

      • ELCUCO786

Agreed. I was actually debating on cancelling my pre-order but on hearing this news and a possible Alien horde mode (Extinction), I’m definitely keeping it. It seems that they are listening to our ever lasting complaints.

As far as the cloud goes…All it is as of now is just a service for developers to use their servers. I was wondering if these “servers” would be provided by MS themselves free of charge but its apparent that IW/Activision is paying to use this service. I’m going to be spending most of my time on Killzone :SF but won’t be shy about popping in Ghosts every once in a while ;)

    • SomethingSomethingGOAT

Or because there aren’t any dedicated servers on PS consoles and they don’t want to lose out on sales by saying so. I’m gonna wait for confirmation before i buy it on ps3.

  • QwietStorm

Of course you can’t call out any other names in Microsoft’s bed. That’s not proper etiquette.

    • CoDforever

Seriously, when he says “current gen” what other consoles does he mean, the fucking wii u ?

      • uwantSAM0A

Ghosts confirmed for Wii U and OUYA!

        • That guy you might know

Imagine how bad it would be on the OUYA xD

I just use mine as an emulator ._.

          • http://www.facebook.com/datkidfromawendaw Clay Johnson

Wasn’t Borderlands 2 streamed to OUYA once in 1080p

  • CoDforever

Does this mean you can join a server without snipers, shotguns etc?

    • James Mulhall

Knowing Activision, they’ll sell servers just like EA do with Battlefield games. And chances are they’ll give you a lot of customization, a little too much I bet.

      • CoDforever

Thats great ! Now a smart person will open up a server without snipers/shotguns and all the other bullshit in the game and we can all play it !!!

        • James Mulhall

I hope they make the shotguns bad again. The olympia in Black Ops killing someone with that horrible thing was so amazing.

Also, I wouldn’t call it ‘great’. It depends how much freedom they give, if you can ban/kick like BF3 then I’d prefer to stick with regular matchmaking. If you can increase the number of players with 18 on any game mode, then I’d prefer regular matchmaking.

  • CoDforever

Does this apply to wii u aswell ?

    • zacflame

      Activision: Wii who?

  • oofy

    It’s about time.

    • CoDforever

Yes indeed. Biggest problem in CoD heavily reduced.

  • CoDforever

TmarTn Inbound !!!!!!!!!! Are you SUPER excited ????

  • CoDforever

You can still have player hosted private matches, right ?

    • CoDforever

For free too, unlike battlefield ?

  • Jake Jeckle

This is going to piss off a lot of exploiters and noobs who relied on the lag from P2P servers.

  • Peter Griffin

Lmfao either way I’m not getting this game, maybe it it’s like half off or something, but there’s other games more worth my money

  • Megaman

No Host advantage for the X1 ;)

  • Brian Anthony

Don’t believe it till you see it! We’ve heard this from them before. You want Eric Hersberger(CEO of Activision) to spend some of his millions he ripped off of little kids and gamers? Keep dreaming big.

  • thebulky1cometh

New matchmaking system? For COD? Sounds like it’ll take a month to get it right.
