New Battlefield 4 Game Updates Rolling Out, PC Patch Introduces Mantle Support

DICE has begun rolling out a few hefty Battlefield 4 game update across most platforms.

Two updates are currently live as of this writing on the PC and Xbox One. Additional patches will be launching throughout the day on the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3.

UPDATE 1: PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 patch notes added below.

UPDATE 2: Xbox 360 patch notes added.

With the new updates, PC users can look forward to support for DICE’s new Mantle renderer that the studio has developed in conjunction with AMD. Frostbite Technical Director “Trydling” wrote a detailed post about the new software where he outlines requirements and shares a few test case results. You can read up on it right here.

For the most part, the rest of the updates include numerous fixes and improve all weapons in the designated marksman rifle class. Check out the notes below and be sure to check back for updates!

Battlefield 4 January 30 PC Game Update Notes

Mantle Support

  • The new Mantle renderer has been added in Battlefield 4. Most players can expect a performance increase by using this new low-level graphics API. Check out this news post [battlelog.battlefield.com] for the full details on Mantle, what the requirements are to run it, and how to enable it.

Mantle Requirements

  • AMD Catalyst 14.1 Beta drivers. AMD will post them here.
  • AMD Radeon GPU with Graphics Core Next (Note: AMD Catalyst™ 14.1 initially supports the AMD Radeon™ R9 290X, R9 290, R7 260X and “Kaveri” APU (learn more))
  • 64-bit Windows (7, 8 or 8.1)

CPU/GPU performance and monitoring

  • Tweaked and improved CPU multi-core utilization to try and avoid stuttering and low framerate due to stalls that happened on some CPU and OS configurations.
  • Users can now configure and control themselves how many CPU cores should be used in the game with the new “Thread.MaxProcessorCount” settings in User.cfg.
  • “Render.DrawScreenInfo 1” now also shows information about which CPU and GPU is in the system, how many GPUs & CPU cores are used and which renderer (DirectX 11 or Mantle) is active
  • Added new “PerfOverlay.FrameFileLogEnable” command that records frame times on CPU & GPU and logs out to a .csv file
  • AMD Catalyst driver 13.12 (or later) is now recommended instead of 13.9
  • Enabled tile-based compute shader lighting optimization on Nvidia for improved GPU performance (already active on AMD GPUs)
  • Improved performance with rendering and spotlights for all GPUs, primarily in in-door environments

DMR Balance Tweaks

  • Increased the damage of all DMRs across all ranges. Specifically, damage has been increased at long ranges to allow three-hit kills against unarmored opponents. Additionally, reduced the penalty to accuracy for sustained DMR fire, allowing more rapid follow up shots in combat. The amount of the damage increase varies from weapon to weapon, according to its intended range, rate of fire, and damage. We will continue to monitor the effectiveness of DMRs in combat, and determine if additional action is needed to make DMRs a viable mid to long range weapon.

Other Items

  • Greatly reduced the risk of crosshairs disappearing, which would also result in hit markers disappearing
  • Added a headshot icon on the killcard. This should help identify instances where players are correctly killed by one shot
  • Fixed an issue in Squad Deathmatch where the “Win/Lose” text was overlapping
  • Fixed an issue with players using an exploit for the SOFLAM
  • Fixed an issue with players using an exploit for the MAV
  • Fixed the gameplay code to properly track the FOV (Field of View) changes in the options menu
  • Fixed an issue where chat would break when entering “false” or “true” in the chat window
  • Fixed an out-of-helicopter glitch in Air Superiority where players could spawn on the ground and play as infantry
  • Fixed the misaligned crosshairs on the T90 MBT
  • Added setting to tweak joystick dead zone
  • Various minor crash fixes

So bad, this game already has the same amount of patches BF3 got and even though I didnt try it yet, Shit is probably still bugged.
Really disappointed in BF4…no where near as much fun as BF3 was.

    • swipe_06

At least there’s active support for it. MoH Warfighter got maybe 2 or so. that game didn’t make it past the first DLC.

      • James Mulhall

Because it didn’t sell well and nobody really like the game.. I don’t see that as a good thing, the only reason BF4 is even getting patches that aren’t for DLC is because people are demanding them, if all these issues were here and nobody complained, I honestly doubt EA would give a shit, just like they did with MoH.

        • swipe_06

Obviously, if your got 10 guys playing your game, you wont keep up a major studio to patch it for free. If everyone would be satisfied with the game, why would you change anything?

    • VEX_VEHIX

Yea, I catch myself popping in BF3 and GTA V over BF4. Sad, theres so much potential.

    • Brandon Stern

You said “I didnt try it yet” and then “no where near as much fun as BF3 was” what?

      • Kidanny Mendez

Pense exactamente lo mismo, no tiene sentido que el compare los 2 juegos sin haber jugado BF4. Parece que escribio eso solo para tener mas cosas que decir acerca de BF4

      • Alkanida

        wow, boy learn to read.
“Even though I didnt try it yet, shit is probably still bugged.”
Guess what I didnt try if the next line is about “being bugged”
yup, talking about the patch, not the game.
of course i have the game and play it regularly, but i was addicted to BF3. BF4 does not give me this feeling.

  • SamRock

For the first time in months. … my EXE crashes after the patch was applied.

The game is not even starting up….. Crashes as soon as the EXE is loaded into memory:’(

    • marpla78

already a crash? i will download when i get out of work and wait for the worst i guess :)

      • SamRock

I guess I am one of the minorities. Most are able to play the game. However there is a new problem… the Backend systems are having issues… no one is able to join a server :D

It will probably take some time to resolve

        • DerpSlayer

          Thank you captain obvious

  • Niosus

I am really interested to see what kind of performance difference Mantle makes. If any of you have a supported GPU, it would be awesome if you could post some quick stats!

    • marpla78

yeap same…im really close to get the Sapphire Toxic r9 280x and the mantle is a big plus if is “real”.

  • Kyle Jackson

    RELEASE THE MANTLE!!

  • BigRuss730

It would be nice if they put this much effort in before it’s release, instead of after….

  • Leon

This is a very good patch.
    My specs: Win 7 x64, i5-2500, GTX580, 16GB of RAM.

Performance is finally smooth. Stuttering and previous CPU spikes
are gone. I could finally disable v-sych and remove 60 fps limit in
user.cfg. On hight settings, fps was never an issue, but now I get from
over 110 to 45 depending what’s going on in game. But no more sudden spikes and stuttering.

    - “Significantly reduced the duration of the black screen when
spawning in, and fixed the issue with players getting killed before
being in-game ” – Finally, I can spawn on squad mate and have a chance of fighting back!

DMRs work much better judging from a short test.

Crashes were gone already after December’s patch.

    • Energize

Can’t wait to try this out on my laptop, I will finally be able to run BF4 on my laptop with 60 FPS just like BF3.

    • Yevgenij Pekurovskyy

These fps drops from 80+ fps to 45 happen all the time for nvidia cards, even if you play on lowest settings. I have same specs but gtx 560Ti

      • Leon

It does not bother me at all as long as there is no stuttering. And the patch seems to solve this problem.

    • Jamic

      I have I7 2600, GTX 560 Ti and windows 7 64 bit.

I fixed my stuttering with the “draw ahead” command, I dont remember what it was exactly called though…
Still, Im running BF4 on medium settings, 1600*900, post aa low and get 60-70 FPS most of the time with occasional peaks to +100 but my FPS never drops to 40 (with exception of flood zone, Im getting pretty bad performance there)

It could have something to do with the fact that I play exclusively on 32-48 player servers though.

      • Leon

I have tried before using various values for “draw ahead” but in my case, it has never made any difference. What helped me immensely, was to limit fps to 60 in user.cfg.I don’t remember the command but it can be done automatically using Realmware’s BF4 Setting Editor.

        • Jamic

Hmm yeah, it may have worked for me so well because my GPU is mid range but CPU is more of a high end CPU so BF4 most of the time utilizes my GPU fully but CPU has always some “reserves” left.

I just put “1″ to the draw ahead value and my stuttering problems were gone. Some people had to do the core unparking but mine were already unparked (4 unparked, 4 parked. I7 2600 has 8 logical threads so yeah…)

  • Tyler Dominick

Keep doing the dang thing DiCE, much love… even little tweaks to the Nvidia side as well, mad props!

  • JackLambert180

    What about the pistol changes

    • Hot-Wire

Pistols were changed. My qsz has 20 rounds now and feels much better.

      • JackLambert180

They were I will have to look a again. Thanks i would hav not noticed.

  • Boja0201

David fails to mention when 360 will get an update….

  • Katana67

Just downloaded the PS4 version, are anyone else’s weapon camo colors off in the menu? They look, I dunno, flatter.

    • Alex Marciniak

lol. yeah they are all darkened out for some reason. I noticed that too. It doesn’t affect how they look on the gun, but in the menu they are glitched/darkened. weird, but not surprising.

  • Yevgenij Pekurovskyy

Game crashes again. No single crash since a mounth and now its fucked again. Wtf really

  • Justin F. Hersey

I’m glad Dice is finally starting to get things stabled out. Hope soon they will be steaming forward at full force. To the ones out there waiting patiently and pulling through and have faith in Dice at least there are some people out there are willing to stick around and backing Dice while they work hard on getting this game fixed. At least they are doing everything they can to get it fixed. I respect the choice to hold off on all DLCs until they get the base game fixed. Cause adding a DLC to a already broken game it will cause more issues. At least they are going to make up for it next month. Not many company will do stuff like they do for their players/consumers. I have a lot of respect for Dice. Dice keep doing what you do. Let’s get this game fixed. (:

  • shodannet

I havent used the DMRs yet, but being on the receiving end of one, it just seems to be a spam weapon (KISH-KISH-KISH-KISH-KISH-KISH). I would have thought increasing the damage and accuracy would just encourage people to spam more

  • Peacenutman

This sounds great, I knew DMR needs buff when I could barely get any kill.

  • Engin Chapuller

After I downloaded the patch on PS3:
    - I experience low frame rates, 15-20 fps, it was better before patch.
    - Game still crashes randomly !!! sometimes in game sometimes when loading next round.
    - Some players are not seen, you only see the name tags but 3d model of enemy soldier not seen sometimes.
    - Sound problems still remain! I got 3 hit in tank but hear no sound. And as usual when starting round it takes nearly a minute to get game sounds.
    - Game textures are not loading properly ? isn’t it working from my disc? why game engine can’t load them.
    - I played many different games, some of them were not AAA quality but none of them are crashing regularly ?
    - Btw Just Cause 2 multiplayer game lets 800 players online same time on same map playing. How is that possible?

    • Engin Chapuller

And I got killed by players with “0″ Health, many times.

  • Eric

First off….Where is the squad up option pregame? This is incredible!! A game all about teamwork, it take 10 even 20 mins for all my friends to get on the same team. Where is the loadout screen pregame? And last, the netcode is still crap. This game makes me want to completely give up on FPS online. I can deal with getting shot around corner by 1 step. But sometimes I’m 5-6 steps around a corner. And its great, they show your killer and it shows the angle he killed you at. I play on PS4 with a great connection, all the router tweaks.
