Report – Laid Off EA Contractors Out Unannounced Police-Themed Battlefield Game

According to reports, recently laid off contractors stationed at EA’s Ghost Games studio were offered positions at Visceral Games to aid with production on a new police-themed Battlefield game, code-named Havana.

Ghost Games, formerly known as EA Gothenburg, were responsible for last year’s Need for Speed: Rivals and are said to be working on another Need for Speed game as they now lead the franchise.

“Ghost is now leading Need for Speed and there will certainly be some announcements about how that will evolve and work in the near future,” Marcus Nilsson, executive producer on the game, told Polygon. “Criterion is doing something else, but that doesn’t mean they can’t help us on this.”

Last we heard of Criterion Games, the studio was rumored to be working on a brand new Battlefield spin off to release during EA’s 2015 financial year, which would likely translate to a release this Fall.

“We spoke with management on Thursday afternoon, and although they have not yet announced a version of Battlefield for FY15, they confirmed that our understanding is spot on and that if a version of Battlefield were to be released in FY15, it would be developed by a studio other than DICE,” Wedbush Morgan analyst Pachter said.

According to Polygon’s sources, that spin off could be a police-themed Battlefield game in development at Visceral Games, due out this year.

Thoughts?

And the downfall of the series begins…

    • Mitch

Didn’t it already begin when EA was just pushing the games out, just to take a bite out of the CoD sales? They didn’t care how broken the game was, as long as it was out before CoD.

    • Darkthunder

What do you mean, “begins” ? Started years ago.. BF4 is just the latest “fiasco” from EA/DICE.

      • Connor

True, but this game is a complete spinoff using the Battlefield title made by a completely different company.

      • Paul Klebar

Staryed with black on ps2. By criterion. Check it out. It looked like a end of lifespan ps3 game with years before ps3 even came out. That game if any is your middleground.

        • Paul Klebar

Bf style distruction. Guns galore. Actual challenging LONG missions. This was more pre mp so it wasnt huge but one of the first steps criterion made out of burnout. And it was amazinnnnnnnnnng

          • Paul Klebar

            And that hit dt tho…..mmmmmmm.

        • http://www.almostaveragegamers.com/ Barry Moore

Loved black played that and the Area 51 game that came out around the same time! Good times!!!

    • dieger

      it began 3 years ago…

    • potatolol

It started a very long time ago with Bad Company .

  • Katana67

    I only have one question.

How much pot did they smoke to get that a “police-themed Battlefield” title would be a good idea?

(Although I’m not seeing anything in the actual quoted content of the article that suggests a “police-themed” Battlefield title)

    • dieger

i could see it working on the scale of killzone(KZ2 map size) and maybe even COD scale but police warfare on maps the scale of Battlefield?…no

      • Katana67

It’s the subject matter that gets me here. I just don’t care for police-themed anything.

There’s a reason I don’t play spikey-haired JRPGs, watch Star Trek, or think Megan Fox is hot… simply put… the subject matter doesn’t move me. I’m sure they play great and/or look great to others, but I don’t like the subject matter

      • roland0811

An open city game playing as S.W.A.T would be awesome to me. One team being the perps and figuring out what type of crime to commit and how to pull it off while the other team is S.W.A.T. and has to respond and nullify the situation with the least amount of innocent casualties. My friends and I would play the hell out of that.

    • Swisher Sweets

Don’t hate on pot smokers because dice is obviously on coke katana :P

      • Mr. Thuggins

EA is the one on coke. Starting all of these projects without finishing them is a characteristic of an uppers addict haha. DICE is just their enabler.

        • RoderickVI

Its DICE’s fault, EA just take all the blame, if you are said to finish a project for a set date, you have to do it for that date, if not its the worker who’s at fault

          • Mr. Thuggins

Yeah, upper management has never been known to set unattainable deadlines.

I was purely making a joke, I couldn’t care less who is at fault. I just care about the problems being fixed and not popping back up on future iterations.

    • Oblivion_Lost667

If it wasn’t for the fact that BF has not had really any good SP/coop outside of BC2/1 (Some people don’t like those either though.), I would say some tactical S.W.A.T. stuff would be fun, but I just don’t see it playing out well.

the end of battlefield and cod

      • Simplysqueezed

I thought this floped and was never heard of again.

  • MegaMan3k

I guess that’s where the kickstarter “Police Warfare” went.

  • ThePoolshark

I think it should not have the Battlefield name. Leave Battlefield to DICE, Titanfall with Respawn, and this police themed game to Visceral with a new name.

    • Mitch

They’ll probably just use ‘BattleField’ in the title to boost sales.

      • ThePoolshark

Yea, true… whole new dev team and studio makes me think it wont have the “bf feel”

        • Mitch

It obviously wont, tanks, helicopters and jets wont work in a police game. Hell, I wouldn’t be surprised if this is going to be a CoD rip-off.

          • ThePoolshark

May have a Rainbow 6 feel, which could be good, or horrible.

            • Mitch

I think it will be a CoD rip-off. EA and DICE already tried it a bit with the Close Quarters DLC in BF3, so why not try it with a spin-off?

            • MegaMan3k

Close Quarters was phenomenal. If they want to make a full game with that sort of feel, then please by god do it I’ll preorder right now.

      • dieger

call of Battlefield: fall of the police titans.
preorder now to get the exclusive metro map from BF3…

        • Yevgenij Pekurovskyy

Call of battlefield: modern police warfare 4

        • KennyKyle

          lol

  • dieger

Wasn’t there this on kickstarter game that had the same premise? its been off the radar for a long time now though. maybe they got picked up by dice and EA?

    • Mitch
      • thebulky1cometh

Hey, we get it- either you made this video or you didn’t read the part where it says “not a real product.” Regardless, we get it- you can stop posting it everywhere.

    • Yevgenij Pekurovskyy

i was following them on facebook. Last february they said project was still alive but no new since then

      • CoDforever

February 2013? Also, can you send me their facebook?

        • Yevgenij Pekurovskyy

Yes, it was in february 2013 and i cant find this group anymore.

          • CoDforever

aha, maybe thats why the kickstarter got cancelled, EA liked the idea and picked it up

  • swipe_06

Are they trying to copy counter-strike?

    • Yevgenij Pekurovskyy

Yes and they gonna release “back to de_dust” dlc as pre order bonus

      • tittydestroyer

Pre-order now and get an exclusive map, that is totally not in cs, but has the same exact name! de_dust2!

  • awkenney

Stoked! If this leads to a more close-quarters infantry-based game from Criterion and Visceral, then sign me up! I love the feel of both studio’s previous titles. I don’t really like how the immersive factors tend to get in the way of how controls effect mobility in BF4. Some divergence from that formula is a welcome addition in my book.

  • SamRock

Urban warfare. Terrorist taking over cities, all communications down, military is not allowed else city gets blown.
Welcome to Battlefield: Operation Police strike :D
    Urban based infantry battlefield
use police vehicles, bike, car, armored jeeps
against terrorist’s customised civilian vehicles (aftermath)
Fight to take back your city, one mall, park, office building at a time.

i think its going to be fun

    • Mr. Thuggins

That sounds a little too close quarters for the Battlefield fandom. Sounds fun to me though!

    • Yevgenij Pekurovskyy

A mix of gta and battlefield

    • ReeceGators

Ya did you just mean to describe The Dark Knight Rises??

      • SamRock

I realized the similarities after ur reply:D

  • Jamie Marques

Okay seriously wtf am I reading here

    • Opt1kon

this looks like it would be very fun if the Battlefield police game doesn’t flop and has more city settings, only time will tell

  • xHDx

I’m confused. So this video below is for Call of Duty but the article say’s Battlefield.
Can someone explain? Is there a leak for both games?
    Thanks.

  • Jayy

Smh, I don’t want the Need For Speed guys making any Battlefield games :/

    • xHDx

Your telling me. I miss Underground. My childhood is gone :(

  • Swisher Sweets

Battlefield cops and robbers edition.. no thanks. Vietnam= YES!

    • Yevgenij Pekurovskyy

      vietnam should be a dlc

  • David

Soon as I read the title I thought of payday, I loved the look of that game from what I saw of it on youtube, But as far as a bf/police themed game? I’m not sure it work, take a look at bf now, no one rarely ever works as a team/squad as it is, I don’t want to be part of a SWAT team that loses all the time because everyone in the squad wants to be a sniper.

Game modes would be interesting, wonder what they could come up with outside of tom based modes. I mean you have two options ultimately kill the criminals or arrest them..

  • leeroy_newman

This is like skyrim, with polices.

  • jj16802

EA, whatever it is you’re smoking, I want it.

    Just give us 2143!!!

Unless of course, the premise is similar to that of Dark Knight Rises where a terrorist/mercenary group takes over a city. Then that could be interesting.

    • jj16802

The face that EA liked this post hopefully means that I’m getting paid for my totally original idea. :P

  • EA

Remember the kickstarter for “Police warfare”? looks like ea is piking up the theme. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h7mBp9jSlQA

    • ReeceGators

That trailer has got me sooo hyped. Like a payday 2 style deathmatch with one life would be SWEET

  • Dennis Wensch

Wow, too soon? Maybe.. But I’m always open for some refreshment. They are going COD’s way with yearly releases, but if you look to the active players.. Certainly not a un-populair game! Yeah, they want to milk out the cash cow, but if you want to make profit, this is the way to do it. That’s how the world works! It’s good they want to try some new themes! And who knows in the future; a sci-fi or ww2 shooter would be nice!

  • Kyle Jackson

    It won’t be Battlefield, simple.

    • Simplysqueezed

Thats fine with me, wouldn’t mind if EA took all of its shitty franchises and went and died in a hole nowadays.

      • Kyle Jackson

They have helped destroy the series.

  • zacflame

Wait, Havana is the capitol of Cuba.
Cubans usually have shitty cars from the 70′s, or no car at all.
A Battlefield game, with police and shitty old cars in a somewhat dusty city environment?
    This is evil.

  • Yevgenij Pekurovskyy

why are you so sceptical about it? Having a large scale cops vs robbers game would be awsome. You should be happy about multiplayer fps trying to go in different directions. It finally happens

  • roland0811

I feel like I’m never going to get the large scale, tactical shooter I want on console. Where are you at Bohemia? I need Arma 3 for PS4 sometime soon.

    • OlekKing

      And you never will.
PC Master Race. Join us or bow before us.

      • roland0811

Nah, I game on PC too but all my friends are on console. I just can’t get along with douche bags.

        • Olek

Well get ArmA 3 on PC and join a community, ArmA has lots of them as you know and there’s all kinds of them, casual communities, serious communities and hardcore ones. If you are implying PC has lots of douchebags then consoles have even more, there’s assholes everywhere, just don’t play with random people expecting them to be respectful or helpful.
Maybe show your friends how fun it can be and persuade them into joining you on PC as well.

          • roland0811

Read your previous comment and tell me you don’t sound like a douche.

            • Olek

I really don’t give a fuck what you think i am. Have fun on your shitty consoles playing your shitty games then.

            • roland0811

              LMAO!!

  • JJz

Criterion needs to work on a new burnout IP. I miss having a goofy racer in my library.

  • OlekKing

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BiknJbHRwPA

I guarantee you 100% this is what they picked up, their kickstarter just disappeared without a valid reason.

I’m so fucking happy, i really wanted them to make that game and looks now they will be making it an actual BF title, fucking awesome!!!! GET ON THE HYPE TRAIN SON!

  • Kidanny Mendez

To me the last good dice game was BF:BC2 that game might have been a spin off but it to me it hit the mark.
