Report: Sony No Longer Porting Single-Player PlayStation-Exclusive Games to PC
It looks like PlayStation games appearing on PC are about to end after six years — at least when it comes to single-player, narrative-driven experiences.
In the last six years, PC gamers were treated to PlayStation-exclusive ports a few months after its initial console release. If this new report is any indication, that’s coming to an end right now — which means a report from three months ago is proving to be the real deal.
This means that titles such as Ghost of Yotei, and even Saros, won’t see the light of day on PC.
PlayStation Games Won’t Be Appearing on PC Unless It’s Online-Focused
In a new report published by Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, it mentions how PlayStation Studios Business CEO Hermen Hulst told staff in a town hall meeting today that Sony’s narrative-driven, single-player games wil now be PlayStation-exclusive.
Games that have a big online focus, such as Marathon, Marvel Tokon, and the like, are still planned to be released on multiple platforms, but single-player games are off-limits, which was revealed by people familiar with the company’s plans who wish to remain anonymous.
Having said that, the same people cautioned that things could change in the future due to the unpredictable nature of the video-game industry and that Sony’s plans are “constantly shifting.” In recent weeks, it’s been mentioned that Sony scrapped plans to bring Ghost of Yotei and other internally developed games to PC.
A spokesperson for PlayStation has declined to comment on the matter, adding further credibility to it.
Some of the reasons that might be attributed to Sony pulling back from releasing PlayStation games on PC could be how it hasn’t performed as well as they would have liked commercially, and the report also mentions how a faction within PlayStation has also expressed concern that releasing games on PC risks damaging the console’s brand, and even hurt sales of the PS5 and the future consoles the company releases.
While this is in no way confirmed, Schreier has been very reliable when it comes to reports. It’s also understandable for Sony to do this since the company values moving both software and hardware. Recently, a survey confirmed that exclusive games are still the main reason people buy consoles, and, arguably, Sony has the best first-party video game studios.
Speaking of the PS5’s successor, Sony has yet to decide on the PS6’s price and release date per a new report. Not only that, but we recently ran a report on a new horror game for the PS6 along with cloud streaming info based on our own findings.
