Massive Aims for “Full Immersion” With The Division

With The Division, Massive Entertainment hopes to create the most immersive experience possible in a life-like recreation of the game’s New York setting.

“One of the main things is that we want to have full immersion,” Massive brand art director Rodrigo Cortes recently told GamerHub TV. “That’s like a mantra for us when [we] do games. Immersion is very important to us.”

Cortes talked about the new Snowdrop engine that was built in-house, created specifically to make games like The Divison “better”, not “bigger”. He explains how it allowed the studio to recreate settings like New York and Manhattan in stunning detail.

“We knew that we wanted to do New York,” he said. “And it’s based on New York and Manhattan and more of the downtown area and we wanted to do something as realistic as possible, while at the same time, it needs to be fun. So we have done some creative choices there, so it works with the gameplay, but at the same time, it has the same scale and level of fidelity that you expect New York to have. From all the details when it comes to streets, when it comes to signs, when it comes to stores, and when it comes to what you see inside of the windows, there is life still… all of that is something we needed to be able to make.”

The Division is an open-world, massive multiplayer online, third-person shooter coming to next-gen consoles and PC.

    I really hope this game turns out to be as amazing as it sounds. I need a shooting game that has depth and open world with dynamic online. Sounds great but they better use dedicated servers.

      I’m not even sure this type of game would be possible without dedicated servers technically.

        I doubt it would. i couldn’t see a Rig running that for others, even with the latest Hardware. MS gives Dedicated servers out for free. sony will have them available. I’m sure the game will support them.

      well the problem is that they use dedicated server (probably better) they will lose a lot of countries with potencial customer and we cant forget this is a company and companies need to make money after all…so perhaps at launch they dont give us the dedicated server but who knows maybe they do it after launch when they got they initial numbers and if a rentable option.

      PS: the wait is harder every day.

    Im going to go ahead and say it… they’re having all these grand ideas… but I just dont see them making it happen. Either they’ll push out a severely cut down game next fall… or need to push it back to 2016. I’d love if they could publish this game with everything they want to do. But I dont see it happening. Going to be another hype train that derails.

      I have to disagree, again i dont mind to wait if they make the game better, we are having bad experience when the publisher rush the launch.
      The hope is high here and i think they wont dissapoint us.

      I’m not sure what’s so revolutionary about what they’re doing, other than the fusion of elements (all of which have been done before).

      They haven’t really said anything new since E3, so it’s not like they’re piling on all of these crazy outlandish ideas. The article above is about “full immersion”, which is an incredibly vague concept.

        Name another open world mmo shooter on a console that has done what they are trying to achieve. Plus bring in the graphics they’re trying to push. I just dont see it working as they hope. I hope they prove me wrong. But this game was supposed to release this year. But according to people on the team, 2015 is still only a goal. I forsee this being another GTA5 online related failure.

          Like I said, all of the elements have been one before (open-world, “MMO”, high-fidelity graphics, RPG elements, shooter elements), just not in one package.

          The graphics aren’t implausible. The stuff we’re seeing is probably PC, which is wholly plausible for PCs. Likewise, I suspect the next-gen console versions will be a bit less demanding as to suit the console.

          Personally, I think a lot of the “outlandish” connotations come from our unfamiliarity with what next-gen consoles can really do. We just don’t know yet, as the games we’ve seen are part of that cross-generational period.

          This year is 2014, which was their initial goal. 2015 is when they’d push it back to. Which is based on rumor, and nothing concrete. Although it seems likely given Ubisoft’s track record. They have repurposed at least one studio to help Massive as well, so it’s not like they’re not taking the game development seriously.

          They’ve been working on it for at least a year already, we’ve seen gameplay and multiple in-engine trailers. It’s not as if they’re starting from scratch.

          However, we’ve heard nearly nothing about the online component (save that there will be one, and PvP will probably be instanced). So I’m not sure how one could arrive at the conclusions you’re arriving at.

            For the PC part, I think E3 gameplay was done on PS4 since the presentation clearly showed the guy playing it holding a DS4.

              I wouldn’t be so sure. They’ve done that in the past. Either hooked a console controller up to the PC (or devkit) or just had the demo be scripted and have someone actually pretend to play the game (which I’m pretty sure it was).

              I’d love to think that it was played on a PS4. But Ubisoft in particular is famed for the use of “bullshots” and other misleading demo techniques.

              DICE/EA did the scripted thing with their demo of BF4 at E3. They went as far as having a whole panel of “players” sitting there, whilst the same gameplay from a scripted trailer was playing on the widescreens.

              You destroyed my hopes of a high graphics The Division on PS4. We’ll see soon enough a console gameplay video at E3, I guess! And I hope it’s good enough to make me feel the next gen.

              I mean I highly, highly doubt it will look bad. I’m sure it’ll look great on next-gen consoles. Just, probably not AS GREAT as the E3 footage.

              They’ll probably have to dial down some of the antialiasing and some of the dynamic lighting. But other than that, I didn’t really see anything that’d be too demanding.

              This all depends, as well, on how optimized it is. But given the flexibility of the engine, as shown in some of the recent tech demos, it already seems well-optimized for handling a lot o objects.

    Looking forward to this game. My PS4 is hungry for such games and what made me more excited that I found out that E3 gameplay with played on PS4. I didn’t know that so I’m really excited.

    Well this game keeps the high hopes for me, i dont mind the waiting game if the product deliver…this is nº1 game in my list and i hope this one make a mark in the gaming world because we are not getting great games these days unfortunately, i know some will trash me for these but i think we really need something different than BF, COD, Titanfall, etc…

    “Full immersion” – While that sounds great, from watching the E3 gameplay back they won’t get ‘full immersion’ with a lot of the HUD elements on the screen 24/7. And what about the enemy health? It shows up above their head when they’re not even on the screen. Really hope things like that change.

    I’m dying for this! Although Witcher 3 and Destiny have my attention, this is the game that punched me in the face with how immersive it could be. I also love the concept.
