Call of Duty: “Blacksmith” Reveal Imminent

Publisher Activision and developer Sledgehammer Games will announce the next Call of Duty game, code named “Blacksmith”, some time in May.

In addition to our info, the likelihood of an unveiling this May is quite high, considering some of Activision’s previous marketing tactics.

The first hints for Infinity Ward’s Call of Duty: Ghosts surfaced at this exact time last year when the official Call of Duty website was updated with an interactive mosaic, eventually filling to form the shape of the Ghosts’ iconic skull logo. The game’s first live-action teaser trailer was launched May 1, 2013. Similarly, Treyarch’s Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 was unveiled during the NBA Playoffs on May 1, 2012.

Call of Duty: “Blacksmith” is currently in development at Sledgehammer Games, the third studio to join Activision’s roster of Call of Duty-focused studios, including Treyarch and Infinity Ward.

The first image of Call of Duty: “Blacksmith” was teased last week, showing off a highly detailed rendering of a soldier’s face. It’s official title has yet to be determined.

  • MegaMan3k

Hopefully it’s substantial. Or even shows off the engine at least. Expect little more than heroic quotes, ominous music, and a title splash though.

    • Katana67

Agreed. I’m really itching, oddly enough, for a good CoD these days.

Bring me back Sledgehammer! Bring me back!

      • MegaMan3k

A return to form Bo-era or Cod4-era might be enough to rejuvenate my interest in video games. Heck, I’d even accept MW2 level of quality… But if the MP reveal is as bad as Ghosts, I’m not giving the game a chance. I was burned too badly with BO2 and Ghosts.

Take note Activision – You’re no longer fighting on level ground. You need to EARN interest now. It’s no longer free. You killed that.

        • Jason Lane

Totally agree. I can guarantee you the reveal will be awful because I’m assuming it will be Ghost like. That teaser was pointless I thought. If you’re going to show me something then show me something. Just give me a awesome multiplayer trailer minus the Eminem and be done with it. Remember the first Black Ops trailer when the guy rewinded the game feed from the camera spike? That was freaking cool.

        • http://IGXGaming.com/ IGXGaming

100% agreed. Shit Ops II and Ghosts were both traded in. Black Ops II was a good game, but the hit detection was abysmal. In Ghosts, the hit detection was good, but the maps were so big it encouraged a ridiculous amount of camping. I’m saving my money on this one. I’ll be watching streams and renting “Blacksmith” before sinking anymore money into this franchise. Besides I’m on my quest to rank 110 on BF4, lol. We shall see, I guess.

          • ROCKMONEY

So if “Blacksmith” has Ghost’s hit detection and BlackOps2 size maps we’ll have a winner?

            • http://IGXGaming.com/ IGXGaming

Maybe I like the maps in Black Ops II. Still renting it first, however. Ultimately, it will depend on the community. I think this is the crux of the “camping” argument. The community is just so bad now, it’s not even worth it. This is why I’ve moved over to BF4. I actually received messages from people saying good game when they lost. That shit never happens on COD.

  • Grif

Blacksmith? Medival Warfare? Lol jk, we have to have another modern warfare game.

    • Jason Lane

      “Enemy Phalanx formation inbound”

      • thatoneguy

All jokes aside, I would love a multiplayer medieval game.

        • Grif

Chivalry: Medieval Warfare on the PC is great.

          • Jason Lane

What about those Total War games? I think they’re single player only but are they any good?

            • Grif

              Never played them, sorry.

            • MR_H0RNY

They are real time strategy games (still pretty good) compared the Chivalry which is like first person medieval combat.

            • Jason Lane

Yea I knew it was an RTS but didn’t know if you could compete against other players. They look awesome.

            • NuttyTheSquirrel

They’re strategy games, and I don’t think you’re looking for that. You could play ‘The Elder Scrolls’ franchise (although it isn’t “realistic”). There are amazing “medieval” games coming out. Kingdom Come: Deliverance, Witcher 3, and some more.

    • Primeee

You can’t blame them though. If it sells then they don’t want to risk it & change up too much.

      • Grif

Ya ik, kinda sad though. If Sledgehammer went out of there way to make a totally new CoD, that would be great.

  • BRUCE LEEROY

Everyone always hoping for a cod 4 like gameplay look it’s not going to happen if you want cod 4 play cod 4 because sledgehammer is going to do their own thing. And every year people be like oh I hope this cod will be the saving grace

    • Perma

Good luck trying to play cod 4 every game I get into is full of mods and automatic noobtubes.

  • betosobreira

As the name sounds, it should be something old, something about World War.

    • thebulky1cometh

Hate to break it to you, but blacksmiths often used hammers while working on metals…kinda like a SLEDGEHAMMER, get it? I don’t think it’s anything more than a code name that a bunch of computer nerds giggled about for a few minutes.

      • betosobreira

Sledgehammer… Blacksmith… what else?? Iron Fist ? lol

        • thebulky1cometh

Haha I wish it was called Iron Fist. Much cooler than Blacksmith.

  • Kyle Conner

Man I wish they would just rerelease mw2 with fresh stats, updated security fixes and the removal of one man army noobtubing. I would buy that over a new cod anyday

    • MegaMan3k

I’m surprised they haven’t peddled a “ultra HD remake port!” of the Modern Warfare trilogy.

      • Jason Lane

“The online results are in and now you the fans will get the COD you have asked for. The 40 best maps. The 50 best weapons. The 20 best perks. 10 best Killstreaks. Every reticle and camo ever released. Every Zombie map ever released. All in HD, and all voted on by you our loyal customers.”

Problem is I would never need to play a new COD after that, and Activision knows it :(

        • MegaMan3k

“Act now and pre-order the game at Gamestop for exclusive access to ’2007 mode’!”

          Nooooooooo

          • Jason Lane

            What would 2007 mode entail?

    • NARDDAWG TGMTEL

      same here

    • ROCKMONEY

They did. Except it has parkour and giant mechs in it now…

    • Jason Lane

I could do without MW2s maps.

      • NuttyTheSquirrel

I couldn’t. I don’t know why, but I fucking loved Storm, Quarry, Sub Base and Bailout.
And of course, all the other fan favorites: High Rise, Favela, Terminal, Skidrow, Scrapyard, etc.

        • Jason Lane

I think it’s because MW2s maps funneled players into tight corridors. They were more forward to back, Black Ops maps provided more flanking space. Wider. They’re probably all the same actually lol.

  • Jason Lane

Reading the comments so far it would seem like everyone wants a throwback COD title, which would be nice. My question is: how could they do it? Going back to basics would convince people they have run out of ideas, which is already an assumption of the franchise to begin with. Maybe COD has just ran out of gas. Halo 4 was remarkable but I don’t know of anyone who put a majority of their time into it. There was really nothing wrong with it. I think people just got burnt out.

A majority will tell you the original Modern Warfare was their favorite. I believe a lot of it has to do with the fact that it was fresh and therefore provided a great experience. As new games in the series were released the sentiments of gamers grew increasingly negative. Let’s be honest though, later games such as Black Ops and MW3 provided much deeper multiplayer options on top of the same gameplay that can be found in Modern Warfare. How come we don’t recognize these titles as superior then?

    • MegaMan3k

I generally disagree with the notion that progression must take the form of “more.” Call of Duty would be well suited to go smaller. Less rubbish all around. Make a tighter game, a more focused game. In that way, “going back to the roots” is less a regression in features and more of a thematic shift away from bombast and towards simplicity.

Also, I do recognize Black Ops as superior. I hold it in the highest regard of all.

      • Jason Lane

Black Ops was my favorite as well. I thought they really hit it on the head with that one. Zombies, 30 different reticles, awesome maps, great variety of weapons and Killstreaks. I think it was unfairly dismissed because of the setting and the underlying feeling that the theater mode was somehow affecting the lag.

        • MegaMan3k

And all the weapons being nearly identical reskins.

Didn’t really bother me though… Maybe I was fortunate, but I never had lag issues in the first BO.

          • Jason Lane

Never had any lag issues. Weapons felt different for me because I primarily used the Galil and G11.

    • Guest

Black ops was a carbon copy of MW2, with dull 3 lane maps( except firing range, that was pretty good), A bit better balance, awful lag, and had one of the worst launches ever, This is where, In my opinion began the mainstream hatred of COD, I did like the SND, Zombies, and single player of Black ops though,

  • Jeff Kazimer

I’m really hoping with the release of Unreal Engine 4 tool-set for Xbox One and PS4, Treyarch will use it!! Wasnt COD based off the Unreal Engine anyways, then Deemed IW engine….

    • mechcell

No but you are close, COD engine is based on id Tech 3 Engine AKA Quake 3 Engine.

most interesting, hopefully its not a hype like Ghost was,

  • thebulky1cometh

The more I think about it, if SH makes their own version-like really puts in their own little touches- this idea of 3 different studios making cod games could make sense.

You get a new cod each year, but if you don’t like a particular studio, you skip that one. Ideally, each cod would maintain that signature “feel” but would also contain little signatures- the dolphin dive vs. the slide immediately comes to mind, for instance. If each of the three studios really went balls to the wall with the now 2 year cycle, they could really have a great thing going in terms of details, maps, stories, etc. Problem is, both Treyarch and IW have come across as a bit lazy with their last few releases- nothing has been as good as original Blops (not even close in my opinion).

    • 13inchpizzabase

I agree completely with this statement. Also, with there now being a longer cycle for each dev team to develop their games, this should technically give more time to fine tune a game and make it a tonne better.

      Time = quality.

1 year to develop a game as big as Call of Duty simply isn’t long enough, i think this 2 years will make them better games (or so i hope).

      • Stick Man

They already get 2 years. Once their game releases, they have begun work on the next game. So now, it’s actually a 3 year cycle.

  • Jonah Thrillz

Pretty excited and with all CoD developers using the PS4 as the lead platform, we’ll truly see Next-Gen graphics!

    • LikeaSomeboday

      Xbox One Has better Graphics.

      • MrMultiPlatform

        If your blind.

        • LikeaSomeboday

I have a PS4 and the colour seems better on Xbox One, PS4 always has this blurry fog.

          • MrMultiPlatform

I own both aswell & I don’t see it. Maybe i’m blinded by my fanboyism.

      • Grif

The fanboy in you is very strong.

      • Jonah Thrillz

        Xbot fanboy. Delusional at best.

7 million PS4 owners and counting can’t be wrong.

This is one of the most unified discussions on a CoD article I’ve ever seen. I’m inclined to agree with most of the sentiments mentioned, if only the larger community were in agreement like this, perhaps our feedback would even be acknowledged?

If Sledgehammer could harness the pure win that BO1 was comprised of I would be a very happy gamer, though I think it more likely SH have taken their queues from the new IW and the next entry in the franchise be more akin to MW3.

  • Call Of Duty 2 4ever <3

I wait till january 2015 and then i buy it if i buy.

    • MrMultiPlatform

      ^ This guy lol

      • Call Of Duty 2 4ever <3

        What is funny about me?

  • SamRock

Blacksmith? Why because it will have a black protagonist, whose face they showed last week? :D
There is going to be some loud racism cry if thats true.

    • Work Hard, Twerk Harder

Or Blacksmith’s can create weapons, and this the first proper CoD game from Sledgehammer, makes more sense this way.

  • MrMultiPlatform

    BO1 & BO2 worst 2 CoDs ever

Most likely this call of duty might be pay to play online since they been talking about it of the last 3 years I can live with out story mode just play the online. How many of the true cod fans would pay just to play MP. I would but however elder scrolls and destiny are having my attention. We will see slot more games with membership fees. I don’t care how much it is ill buy the game still

After MW2 ruined the franchise for me I’ve been wary of CoD. That was singularly the worst MP experience I think I’ve ever had for a shooter (Killzone 2 and SOCOM:Confrontation aside). Hopefully they pull it off and bring back the quality that was in CoD 2 and 4. ArmA3 seems to be the only shooter doing it for me right now.

    • MrMultiPlatform

Mw2 is by far the funniest CoD to play.

      • roland0811

I totally agree it was the funniest. All of that bad map design, crappy perks, lag and unbalanced gameplay. I really couldn’t do much more than laugh at it every time I tried to play it.

        • MrMultiPlatform

I think you’re confusing MW2 with BO2. The only thing wrong with MW2 was AMO.

          • roland0811

Nah, MW2 was the last one I bought and it wasn’t worth the asking price. It was a steaming pile through and through. I took to just renting the subsequent releases and they weren’t much better. And actually, I didn’t really like World at War much, either.

  • ascaryghost

YOU guys confirming it isn’t a real confirmation. You’re basically saying that you’re confirming a rumor that hasn’t actually been confirmed. Slightly misleading title here.

    K. Cod4 and Mw2..even BO1 was where CoD was at. The maps catered to many different playing styles, not the new linear boring camp-fests we get now. The weapons felt different and unique enough that I felt I needed to use them all and adjust to fit my various playing styles. You could put a thermal sight and a under-barreled shotgun on any assault rifle in Mw2 and it would be viable if you knew how to play with it. Now, I feel that only a few guns are even worth using unless ur just fooling around. Sure they all suffered spawn problems and people raged, but they kept playing cuz the games had enough to keep them in. Now, something bullshit happens in Ghosts and I’m done. Haven’t played in months, not even the slightest urge. And don’t get me started on Ghosts’ PC optimization…
