The Outer Worlds free upgrade

A few weeks ago, Obsidian confirmed that players who own The Outer Worlds on Xbox One and PS4 would be able to get a free upgrade to Spacer’s Choice Edition before the original version started being removed from some digital stores.

However, the studio has now changed the conditions, causing frustration among many players.

According to Obsidian, the reason is connected to “unforeseen platform limitations” related to licenses and access rights on both Xbox and PlayStation.

Many Players Will Miss Out on the Free The Outer Worlds Upgrade

Obsidian’s first announcement promised a free upgrade for all base game owners.

From now on, Xbox One and PS4 players who own the digital version of the game will only get free access to The Outer Worlds: Spacer’s Choice Edition if they also own both DLC expansions for the RPG: Peril on Gorgon and Murder on Eridanos.

This means simply owning the base game is no longer enough, which completely contradicts what was originally promised.

The original announcement reads, “If you have at least the base edition of The Outer Worlds in your library before May 27th, you will be receiving the Spacer’s Choice Edition free. That’s right, free! This is for all platforms that the Spacer’s Choice Edition is on (Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG). After May 27th, The Outer Worlds: Spacer’s Choice Edition will be available for $39.99.”

Obsidian said the change was necessary because of “platform limitations with entitlements” affecting Xbox One and PS4.

However, the good news is that the studio also confirmed it is looking into possible solutions for players who own the physical version on Xbox One and PS4, although there is still no final answer on how that upgrade could work.

We also reached out to Microsoft about the situation and will let you guys know once we hear back here at MP1st. For now, players will have to wait and see if Microsoft or Obsidian really comes up with a solution in the coming days.
