Possibly one of the biggest topics in every new entry of Call of Duty is how the movement system will be. Last year, Treyarch introduced the Omnimovement system that seemed good on paper, but was divisive among gamers when it came to practical use.

In Modern Warfare 4, movement will play a big factor once again, and this time, Infinity Ward seeks to bring back a much faster pace compared to Modern Warfare 3.

Not only that, but we even get to see our first glimpse of movement gameplay.

Modern Warfare 4 Movement System to Be Unrestriced and Fluid

In a new episode of From The Ward, a video series detailing the development of Modern Warfare 4, Infinity Ward studio co-studio head Jack O’Hara and co-studio head Mark Grigsby talked about multiplayer and the game’s movement system.

Included in the video is our first glimpse of gameplay of Modern Warfare 4’s movement mechanics, which includes mantling, sliding, and more. We’ve spliced the gameplay into one, which is available below.

According to the developers, Modern Warfare 4’s movement philosophy is to have gamers feel more “unrestricted while still feeling lit it fit Modern Warfare.”

The devs added that they love how “natural” it feels, and how the movement options “aren’t difficult to understand.” Players can pick up the controller and immediately feel how everything works.

Infinity Ward says that Modern Warfare 4’s movement system is “approachable for casual players,” while it’ll still provide room for “mastery and optimization.”

Grigsby admitted that the dev team took criticism from Modern Warfare 2 (Editor’s Note: Sledgehammer developed Modern Warfare 3) for removing some freedom from the movement mechanics. This prompted the studio to make adjustments.

O’Hara mentioned that they set out to create “unrestricted movement,” and how “Ideas started pouring in: mantling into slides, sliding into prone positions, chaining movement together in new ways.” Every time someone proposed something cool, they thought of adding it to the game, O’Hara added.

The result? It’s a game that feels “fluid and dynamic,” O’Hara said, and “When I want to do something, the game responds.”

So far, Modern Warfare 4 seems to be shaping up quite well, and we’re hoping this continues leading up to release.

In related news, Modern Warfare 4’s cosmetics and collabs will “feel authentic,” and the devs even tell gamers to “keep the receipts” on celebrity and cartoon skins not appearing in the game.

Modern Warfare 4 launches on October 23 on the PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch 2 and PC.
