Former Xbox Employees Warn of Possible Retaliation Ahead of Rumored Layoffs
Xbox recently delivered a strong showcase during the unofficial “No-E3 2026” event, but some former employees believe a very different future could be waiting for Microsoft’s internal studios, with reports pointing to possible studio closures, layoffs, and game cancellations.
Several former Xbox employees are now warning current staff about the risk of retaliation if they raise concerns or speak out during the reported wave of upcoming layoffs.
According to Game Developer, four former employees said they experienced similar situations before losing their jobs. They claimed they reported what they described as a toxic work environment involving senior managers, both through direct complaints and written reports to Human Resources. They believe those complaints eventually led to their dismissal.
Ex-Xbox Employees Urge Staff to Keep Evidence Ahead of Reported Layoffs

Their accounts suggest this type of retaliation may not be uncommon at Xbox studios. However, these claims have not been confirmed by Microsoft, and the company has not commented on the allegations.
This is not the first time such accusations have surfaced. Halo veteran Glenn Israel previously accused his former studio of illegal actions and “multiple harassment campaigns.”
Israel was one of the former employees interviewed by Game Developer. He advised current Xbox employees who have filed complaints to gather evidence and inform management. “Make yourself aware of state and federal statutes of limitations for reporting such actions to relevant regulatory organizations, which vary from 60 to 300 days by location,” he said.
He also warned, “If you are laid off, consult an attorney before signing anything and at the very least secure a document retention agreement.”
An employment lawyer interviewed by the publication agreed with Israel’s advice and also encouraged employees to keep records of any abuse they experienced, along with evidence of their “accomplishments in the workplace.”
Both Israel and another former employee, who chose to remain anonymous, described what they believe is a repeated pattern of retaliation, saying that simply filing a complaint with Human Resources or standing up for your rights could change how you are treated.
