Will Destiny 3 ever happen? It is a question that many fans have been asking for years, and Bungie has now shared some new details about the future of the series.

In a lengthy community update published, the studio talked about bringing back removed content to Destiny 2, along with two other projects that could give us an idea of what comes next.

The official post, featuring Bungie’s Head of Product Josh Deane and community manager dmg04, confirms that the studio is working on a large project to bring older Destiny 2 content back into the game.

The plan is to restore campaigns such as Red War, Forsaken, Curse of Osiris, and Warmind, along with their Strikes, Raids, and Raid Lairs. The Menagerie activity is also expected to return.

However, the process will take quite some time. Bungie expects to finish the early development stage around January or February 2027, followed by approximately 12 months of full production. The studio is also looking at bringing back seasonal activities from Season 9 onwards, although some content may not return because of technical difficulties.

Apart from bringing back old content, Bungie has also revealed more about its plans for the future. One of these projects is called Destiny Legacy, which could be related to the return of the original Destiny. According to Josh Deane, the studio wants to make the experience of the past decade available to players on the platforms they use today.

This could mean that Bungie is working on a Destiny 1 Remaster or a new version of the original game for modern consoles and PC. However, nothing has been officially confirmed yet, and the studio has promised to share more details in February 2027.

Another project is called Destiny 2 Celebration, which will bring new updates and content for existing players. Bungie has also mentioned a third, unnamed project called “Redacted”, with the message “We’re back.”

This last project is particularly interesting because it could point to Destiny 3, although Bungie has not confirmed whether a third game is actually in development. For now, these are only possibilities, and the studio has yet to share more details about its plans.

Unfortunately, if you were hoping for a surprise announcement, you will have to wait longer. Bungie has confirmed that there will be no major Destiny announcement at The Game Awards 2026, with the next major update instead planned for February 2027.

The studio also admitted that removing older content from Destiny 2 damaged its relationship with the community. As Josh Deane explained, Bungie wants to rebuild that trust before moving forward with the series. Whether this eventually leads to Destiny 3, a remake of the original game, or something completely different remains to be seen, especially as the studio continues working on Marathon.

In other news, former Destiny 2 developers say Bungie is a toxic and dysfunctional place, blaming leadership for years of problems.
