Black Ops 6 Campaign Length ‘In Line” With Classic Call of Duty Titles; Game in Development for Four Years
With Call of Duty: Black Ops 6’s campaign now confirmed to be focused on the Gulf War and will even feature real-world political figures, some might be wondering how this shapes up the single-player portion of the game and whether this means it’s a more robust affair. As it turns out, the Black Ops 6 campaign length is “in line” with classic Call of Duty campaigns.
This was confirmed by the shooter’s Director of Production Yale Miller who adds that there is a “ton of depth” to it as well.
The game starts with “what’s the story we want to tell”. From a sheer missions and other things [point of view], I think it’s absolutely in line with a classic Call of Duty. Obviously different players can play it faster or slower, but there’s a ton of depth and kind of other things that you can do and explore in different ways.
For reference, Call of Duty campaigns usually last from four to six hours on normal difficulty, which isn’t long, but what it lacks in length, the game more than makes up for it in content with multiplayer and Zombies mode also available for players to sink their time in once the campaign is done.
In terms of development time, Treyarch has also confirmed that Black Ops 6 was worked on right after Black Ops Cold War was released, which was in November 2020. Miller notes that the studio started working on it, “ideation” and whatnot right after Black Ops Cold War.
We started working on it, ideation and talking about it, right after Cold War. So from then until now. We still have what feels like a lot of time to go with the six months of push. So we started there. We also had a huge moment for us, which was the move to the unified engine. That’s a big thing for us.
We started off by looking at and dissecting what are all the parts of a great Black Ops game, and what are the things that we think it needs, Conversations about the era we want to go to, and those things.
We really thought the story the team wanted to tell was to go forward with Cold War. So then we looked at, well, if you go forward with Cold War, then you’re in the events of Black Ops 2, which had flashback missions, and so the early ‘90s was a good spot for us to land.
But yeah, since Cold War, we’ve been focused on this.
This means that compared to other Call of Duty titles which are usually given two years of cooking time, Treyarch had almost four years of development time for Black Ops 6.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 is set to be released this October 25 on the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PC, and it’s already making waves, as the shooter’s gameplay reveal trailer is now the most watched Call of Duty trailer of all-time!
