Cities: Skylines 2, the city-building simulator by Colossal Order, will likely not include a multiplayer feature, according to a recent statement released by the developer. The studio cited that a Cities: Skylines 2 multiplayer feature “would take away from building the core player experience.”

Here’s the original question-and-answer, which was posted last March:

While the answer doesn’t flat-out state that multiplayer will not be in Cities: Skylines 2, adding the feature seems to be highly unlikely. Aside from it taking away from the “core player experience,” Colossal Order also cited considerable time and resource usage required to add multiplayer in the first place.

Here are the questions that Colossal Order answered last month via Twitter (you can also find the Twitter post featuring the questions here):

Q: When did you guys start working on Cities: Skylines II, and was it difficult to keep the secret?
A: We’ve been working on Cities: Skylines II for a few years now. Thankfully, we have some practice keeping Cities: Skylines expansions under wraps, but we’re very happy the secret is out and look forward to sharing more!

Q: Will it still be on Unity?
A: Yes, it will be Unity based

Q: Will the workshop be available in CS2? What about the assets today on workshop, will these survive in CS2 workshop?
A: Cities: Skylines II is an entirely new game. Existing workshop content would likely need to be remade or adapted. We’ll have more to share about modding Cities: Skylines II in the future.

Q: Any scope to add multiplayer in cities skylines 2?
A: Cities Skylines II is our most ambitious project to date, expanding on every mechanic in the franchise. Adding multiplayer support takes an incredible amount of time and resources that would take away from building the core player experience we are striving to create.

Cities: Skylines 2 is set to release sometime in 2023 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
