Destiny 2 Xbox Series X|S Login Issues for Lightfall Surface This Feb. 28, Here’s a Workaround (Update)

Destiny 2 Server Connection

Bungie has issued a multi-step workaround for potential Destiny 2 Xbox Series X|S login issues that may keep players from signing into Destiny 2 when the servers go back up for the Lightfall expansion at 12pm ET/9am ET today. The workaround involves disabling multiple addons from past expansions before signing into the game.

Destiny 2 Xbox Series X|S Login Issues for Lightfall Workaround:

The much-awaited showdown between the Calus-backed Witness and the Traveler is finally happening in the new Destiny 2: Lightfall expansion, which goes live later today. However, multiple problems have arisen in the days before the launch of Lightfall, including the pre-load going live in multiple regions before the scheduled time. Bungie has now identified a potential login issue on Xbox Series X|S consoles in advance before the servers go back up, and has issued a multi-step workaround as follows:

  • Quit Destiny 2 if it is running
  • Highlight Destiny 2 tile
  • Press Menu button
  • Select “Manage game and add-ons”
  • Select Destiny 2
  • Unselect all of the following add-ons:
    • Destiny 2: Forsaken – Black Armory
    • Destiny 2: Forsaken – Joker’s Wild
    • Destiny 2: Forsaken – Penumbra
    • Destiny 2: Forsaken Annual Pass
    • Expansion I: Curse of Osiris
    • Expansion II: Warmind
  • Select “Save Changes”
  • The add-ons will uninstall on the “Manage Queue” screen
  • Launch Destiny 2 when completed

Bungie notes that affected players will not be able to log in at all unless these expansions are disabled, and as such, said players on Xbox Series X|S consoles will remain unable to access the above content until a proper fix is issued.

The Destiny 2: Lightfall expansion is currently available for pre-order on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, and is mere hours away from launch. It brings the new Neomuna location and Legendary campaign, new weapons and enemies, Guardian Ranks, commendations, and the ability to create and save loadouts. A detailed explanation of some of these new quality-of-life features can be found here.

Update: Bungie has added additional steps to the workaround to ensure that sign-ins are not blocked for Xbox Series X|S players:

  • Select “My games & apps”
  • Select “Manage”
  • Select “Updates
  • For all Destiny 2 tiles that appear, select each and then Update
Once the updates are complete, Destiny 2 can be launched.

After launching Destiny 2, if you see any “There’s an upgrade!” screens:

  • Select the Upgrade button
  • Wait for the update to complete
  • Quit Destiny 2
  • Relaunch Destiny 2
  • Repeat these steps until no more upgrade screens appear
