Discord Updates Privacy Policy to Remove Disclaimer on Video/Voice Call Recording, Screen Share Content Storage

Communication app Discord has removed a couple of disclaimers in its updated privacy policy pertaining to voice/video calls and screen sharing. The disclaimers originally stated that the app would not record or store voice calls, video calls, and screen-sharing content.

Here’s the full statement from the old privacy policy, which you can find here:

We generally do not store the contents of video or voice calls or channels. If we were to change that in the future (for example, to facilitate content moderation), we would disclose that to you in advance. We also don’t store streaming content when you share your screen, but we do retain the thumbnail cover image for the stream for a short period of time.

This part of the privacy policy has since been removed from the updated webpage (link here). This new policy will be effective starting March 27.

While this doesn’t necessarily mean that Discord will now record calls and screen-sharing content, the removal of the statements does raise concerns. A Reddit post that pointed out this privacy policy change included mixed reactions from various users, with some citing Discord’s previous violations of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which are upheld in the EU (via the official GDPR website).

Once Discord releases an official statement on the matter, we’ll let you know.
