Dragon Age: The Veilguard Visual Style Deemed Too Cartoony by Fans, BioWare Releases Gameplay Sneak Peek to Counter Claims

Dragon Age: The Veilguard Update 1.000.003

Just yesterday, EA surprised everyone as we got the first reveal trailer for Dragon Age: The Veilguard. While there’s no actual gameplay shown, we do get a sense of where BioWare is going when it comes to the visual style of the characters and the overall game.

It seems the early impressions for the game’s visual style didn’t go over well with fans, as most were expecting a darker tone. Multiple people commented that it looked too “cartoony” with one even commenting that the trailer gave off “slight Shrek vibes” that has since gotten over 560 upvotes at the time of this writing on the r/Games subreddit.

Not only that, but the game’s visual style has gotten multiple comparisons to Fortnite, and Saturday morning cartoons.

There’s a lot more of those in the YouTube video comments and even on Reddit, but you get the gist.

Well, it seems BioWare has heard the concerns, as the studio has now pushed out a Dragon Age: The Veilguard sneak peek ahead of tomorrow’s 15-minute gameplay reveal.

I have to admit, what’s shown today looks way better than what we got yesterday. While the actual gameplay is what will make or break the latest entry for the franchise, the visual style is a huge component of the overall game.

So far, the gameplay shown today looks solid and “dark” enough that we shouldn’t get Fortnite comparisons moving forward. Unless tomorrow’s gameplay reveal leans in on that.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard releases this fall on the PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.

They’ve never gotten this series identity right. The first game was a masterpiece with a massive world and quest to explore, then they did the awful DA2 that took place mostly in one city that was a lifeless bore filled with reused assets, then they had DA3 which while I enjoyed it, felt like a single player mmorpg with lots of strange and pointless tasks. Now this looks like a Pixar game. What they’ve shown including this footage feels nothing like DA. I’ll wait for the reveal, but so far it’s pretty rubbish and let’s be honest, it’s been a LONG time since Bioware released a good game and a lot of the people that made those games aren’t there anymore.

Yeah, the characters look more like generic shooter characters from Fortnite and that upcoming PS5 game. The combat trailer is where it lost me. Basic red health bars, even for wooden material on the walls… Basic hack and slash gameplay.

This is somehow more bland looking than 2.

Gears looks cartoony too including the now confirmed cartoony style of the newest one. Why is obody talking about that?

Hopefully they won’t copy and paste all the animations from the first and 2nd game yet again from 18 years ago, 2 console gens ago now. https://youtu.be/JalWT8oNxhk?
