Final Fantasy Resonance Announced as First HD-2D Entry, Launching This October
After using the HD-2D style in games like Dragon Quest and Octopath Traveler, Square Enix has finally decided to bring it to the Final Fantasy series.
During the latest Nintendo Direct event, the company has announced Final Fantasy Resonance, which will launch on October 22 for Nintendo Switch 2, Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC.
The game is based on the first story arc of the mobile game Final Fantasy Brave Exvius.
Final Fantasy Resonance Announced as the First Final Fantasy With HD-2D Style
As mentioned earlier, the game was shown during the Nintendo Direct as the first Final Fantasy with HD-2D style, the same visual style used in Octopath Traveler and many other Square Enix games. This style mixes 3D backgrounds with 2D characters.
Final Fantasy Resonance will also include some characters from the series, such as Cloud, Tidus, and Warrior of Light, all presented in stunning, retro-inspired HD-2D graphics that push the limits of pixel art.
“Return to the pixel‑art world of FINAL FANTASY, evolved from its classic roots. Travel with companions bound by fate and call on Visions, echoes of beloved FINAL FANTASY characters, to aid you in battle to uncover the truth behind a force that threatens to bring everything to ruin,” the official game description reads.
It’s worth noting that preorders for the game are now available. A Digital Deluxe Edition will be available as well, including the base game and useful in-game items. There will also be a Collector’s Edition, which includes the base game and four special physical items, such as an artbook, a soundtrack, and a unique Trading Card Game promotional card.
